Daniel Palmer, the savior of Opeila.

The boy had peaked Calvon’s interest, but the boy couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Despite being unknown to him, the reason was quite clear; it was because Opeila held him in high regard. The mere mentioning of another boy was all it took for Calvon’s interests to be lit aflame. And now, the boy sit in the library rapidly tapping his fingers against the wooden table in front of him. His right leg swiftly bounced up and down as if the hard floor beneath it was a trampoline, and his mind raced at a hundred miles per second. The quiet sounds of the library and smell of musty books no longer seemed to relax him, and the metal in his jaw seemed heavier than usual.

Just who was this boy?

For once, Calvon didn’t have much to work with. Usually, he’d refer to his journal for information on people, events, or anything, but this time around, his journal was useless. Because he had not a single bit of information pertaining to the boy. So Calvon had to play it old school. He asked around, got some descriptions, played the fool, and all he got was a whole lot of nothing.

“He’s weird.”

“You’re looking for Daniel Palmer?”

Well, actually, he got some good bits of information.

“Yea, he’s the Quidditch Captain--doesn’t look like one though.[/i]

“I won’t even describe to you how he looks. Just look at his feet, you’ll know him when you see him.”

The jet-black haired boy closed his bright, emerald eyes and thought about everything that was said to him. He needed to put everything together because information was nothing more than a puzzle. That’s how information worked. Every little bit of information fit with other pieces somehow--it was like the old saying. Where there was smoke, there was fire. The information was the smoke, and the facts the fire. Like smoke, if all the information didn’t mesh well, then something had to be false and once that false bit is eliminated, you have nothing remaining, but unadulterated truth. And the only bits of unadulterated truth that Calvon currently had was this.

Daniel Palmer must be a boy who, by all intents and purposes, is different from the average boy--and the difference laid in his appearance. It had to deal with something regarding his shoes, or just overall appearance. Maybe he was a Quidditch Captain, and maybe he wasn’t. Calvon didn’t know for sure. And it was stressing him out. At this point, Calvon was no longer tapping his fingers on the table. They were now clawing his scalp in frustration and annoyance. And it wasn’t until he accidently scratched his head a little too hard that he realized that he needed to calm down.

With a deep sigh and huff, the 11 year old got up from the chair and decided to relocate near the entrance of the library. Silence wasn’t doing it for him right now. He needed a little noise along with a change of scenery, and that, he figured, would be better had nearer to the entrance. So Calvon leaned against some shelves with eyes closed, deep in thought. The 4’8 boy wondered not only if this would end up being another day without finding Daniel Palmer, but if he’d ever meet him at all.

Dan was on his daily walk around the castle, when he strayed closer to the library. This was actually a stop for him today. He had books he needed to return, and more to take out. He had all but memorized the potions lists up to his year, so one of the ones he was getting was definitely going to be an advanced potions book.
Once again, Dan longingly imagined the Restricted Section. The potions books in that place must be AMAZING. Maybe there was a book on how to make the Daught of Living Death, or even Felix Felicis!
Being Quidditch captain, and very ADHD, Dan could not help but wonder what Erin would be like on the field having gulped down a vial of that...

But those weren't the only books he was interested in, of course. Others he was interested in consisted of wizard cookbooks, of which he noticed there were not many. Dan had resolved last year that he was going to change that after he graduated. With the resolve of Monkey D. Luffy, Dan was going to become the greatest wizarding chef in history! Books on his techniques would be written, his non-secret recipes beloved by all, and published around the world, his actual secret recipes coveted by everyone!

Of course, he would have to learn how to bake first...
Dan almost wished that he had been here in the 90s... He heard that a previous groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid was quite good at baking. And he was friendly to a T. He probably would have taught Dan to bake if he had simply asked.
Now, the only groundskeeper even close was the one they had now, Golgossa Nernox or something or other. Someone more likely to devour what the lesson was supposed to be about before Dan could even gauge his success, or learn what he did wrong. Unbelievable. If he didn't find a tutor soon, he'd have to ask his house elf, Hoodie, to teach him. But, since Hoodie was a house elf, she'd act a lot less like a teacher, and more like a WAY overly supportive babysitter, praising his attempts even if he almost burned the kitchen down.
Dan definitely wanted to avoid that.

Lastly, he was still attempting to do research on those spiders that had attacked Slytherin before. He found that a lot of Victor's appearance was due to that curse venom they carried. Furthermore, Selim's shadow nearly killed Opeila, had Dan not seen how to dispel shadows from the spider attack and saved her from it, Selim's shadow monster would likely have split her open.

Like Jack Burnett allowed it to do to Victor.

The thought of that moment made Dan stop in the hallway, both fingers and bare toes clenched in anger. That wretched little shit STILL pissed Dan off whenever he thought about him, or saw him. He STILL had yet to apologize for trying, and failing, to attack Dan in the bathrooms without any provocation.

Dan shook the thoughts from his head. This was not a 'Be mad at Jack day', it was a Library day,one of his favorite kind of days.
Dan continued walking, the soles of his always-bare feet rather dirty, as he had been walking for a good while now.

He entered the library, and headed straight for the librarian's desk, and put a stack of books back for him, as he did not seem to be currently present.

Dan knew all of the library staff by now, though the elves always insisted on calling him Master Palmer, despite him saying repeatedly that they were on a first name basis by now. Though, they did have a good few little names for him by now. Shoe-Scorner, Barefooted Bookworm, Bare Toes the Studious, He-Who-Must-Not-Wear-Shoes, ect.

When one came and asked what he was looking for, he replied.
"Cookbooks, if ye please. Also some advanced Potions books. Actual potion recipes this time, if ye could manage. Not some crackpot '100 Uses fer Flobberworm Mucus' shite like last week. Also.... If ye could find me a book or two about living shadow monsters, I'd greatly appreciate it. Any book that mentions them. Be it from spells, or summonings, or straight existence, or what."

When he was directed where he needed to go, he went and retrieved his books. No less than 5 of them.
Dan took the books to a more secluded part of the library. He sat down, discreetly used another chair under the table to put his bare feet up, cracked open "Magical Meats and How To Cook Them", which Dan thought was a title VEEEERRRRY similar to "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them", similar enough to possibly warrant investigation, and began to read.

The doubtful thoughts that filled his mind would dissipate as quickly as they had appeared due to a sound--a clammy sound. Shlick! Shlick! Shlick! Shlick! In protest, Calvon’s already closed eyes would attempt to shut even tighter as if they could minimize the unsettling sound that reverberated through the eleven year old’s head. Needless to say, Calvon’s irritant was not reduced in any way shape or form, thus, causing the boy’s eyes to snap open, scan for, and eventually scowl at the originator of the sound…Bare...Feet.

Now the castle, for all intents and purposes, was as clean as it could be. Given the weight to its name, the janitorial staff at Hogwarts was nothing to scoff at. In all the time Calvon had been moving around the school--an unimpressive three weeks--he had never seen so much as a fraction of a piece of dust skitter across the hallway. Even the bathrooms were eerily sparkly and well-kept. However, even with the impressive cleaning of the castle, there was not a single student walking around barefoot--that is, except for the person who had just walked into the library.

The barefooted boy had a hair color similar to that of Calvon’s; the latter being a deeper, jet-black. However, the way in which they sported their black hair was much deeper. Whereas Calvon’s was more well-groomed and washed, this boy’s was….extremely unkept and messy. In addition to this, presentation, or lack thereof, the boy wore shorts in addition to his lack of shoes. It was December. Did cold weather mean nothing to the boy? While Calvon also sported shorts, he was almost always in his well heated room or library. Not to mention, he always kept his feet, arguably one of the body’s most important appendages, well covered and warmed. The two weren’t even comparable! It didn’t matter if they both wore shorts, had black hair, and sported very similar green eyes. The two were nothing alike.

And while Calvon knew this, he was still focused on this barefooted boy for some reason. Consciously, the eleven year old couldn’t express his interest in the other unprofessional child, but unconsciously the young Slytherin knew. He was scared--scared that the other schoolboy that stood in front of him was the woman Opeila had mentioned. There was no way, right? No way that his unimpressive looking boy was the third-year Quidditch Captain. No way, that this seemingly, lowly boy carried the courage to save a life. No way that this plebeian, proletariat was the boy who had swept Opeila off her feet. Right?!

A smirk would appear on Calvon’s fair-skinned face. Then a small chuckle would begin to bubble before bursting into an uncontrollable whisper of a laugh. As he eventually regained control of himself, Calvon would wipe the tears the crept out of the corner of his eyes. Shaking his head, the boy rubbed his eyes with amusement. There was no way because it wasn’t him. That wansn’t Daniel Palmer--just some unfortunate, barefooted boy without a semblance of self-respect. And with his mind made up, Calvon would turn around and start making his way back to the chair he was sitting in.

This was just the comedic relief he needed.

“Ah, returning already, Master Palmer? Not what you were looking for?”

That statement was enough to not only stop Calvon’s feet, but his heart as well. A cold front would rush past the boy as his denial shattered and reality sank in. The Snape resident would bite hard on his lower lip, and his hands would begin to slightly shake. Was it annoyance? Rage? Disappointment? Maybe it was all three.

Despite his feelings, he had to accept it. This was reality. And if this was Opeila’s hero, then so be it. Calvon was just out of his league. There was no competing with that.

These thoughts would only be confirmed as Calvon heard the voice of the barefooted, Daniel Palmer. It was a cacophonous mix of...English and Southern American? It…it was just too different. And with a sense of defeat overwhelming the young, eleven year old boy, Calvon shook his head and watched as Daniel took his books and made his way into the library.

A good bit behind, Calvon followed, and once Daniel Palmer got settled down, Calvon would, once again, shake his head in disappointment and make his way to the other boy.

With a smile fueled by disbelief, though not apparent in his face, Calvon would ask, “Daniel? Hey, I’m Calvon. I just met Opeila the other day, and she said great things about you, so I wanted to meet you and introduce myself.

Oh how the scar on his left cheek burned with annoyance.

Huh. The first entire chapter was about Bicorns. Bicorn steaks, Bicorn roasts, Bicorn stocks, all magical beef.
Dan idly wiggled and flexed his bare toes as he learned the proper procedures to prepare a perfect medium well bicorn steak, what sauces to use, how to make a bicorn sauce, and what sides to use and drinks to pair with it.
He had just gotten to where the horns could be ground into powder and mixed with other aromatic magical herbs and sprinkled onto the steak for health benefits when he heard another boy speak.
“Daniel? Hey, I’m Calvon. I just met Opeila the other day, and she said great things about you, so I wanted to meet you and introduce myself."
Dan's face flashed with annoyance at being called his full first name and, to a lesser extent, being interrupted while reading. His eyes snapped to the perpetrator, using the look that his friends in Dingle described as "Being able to scare off a pissed badger". It was a look he often had in Quidditch or in situations where humor was gone, and he was completely serious.

Then, his brilliant mind put several things together.
He had never seen this boy before, nor had he ever heard his voice. He wore Slytherin colors, which meant they were in the same house. If this was a girl, Dan would have passed this over with just a bit of scrutiny, as he wasn't part of the girls' dorm. However, this was a boy. And as such, lived in the Boys' dorm. Perhaps he was not in the same dorm as him, the clearly superior Salazar Dorm, but the odds of them living in the same House, and in the same half of that house, and Dan never seeing nor hearing his voice were incredibly low.

Which meant he was new.
This however, raised more questions. It was nearing Christmas for god's sake. He would have seen him by now, surely. As far as he was aware, Hogwarts didn't do mid-term arrivals.
On top of that, Dan's Keen Eye noticed something else. This boy had a scar on his left cheek. A scar that was far too precise and straight to be anything but a surgical scar. He knew what those looked like; His mother worked in St. Mungo's after all.

From these, Dan deduced two possible scenarios.
One: The scar was unrelated entirely, and Hogwarts just accepted a late arrival out of nowhere for no reason.
Two: The scar was the result of an injury. One that was treated, and that kept him out of the school for a while. This was much more likely.

Still, it wasn't as if Calvon was being unfriendly. After about two full seconds, the Serious Dan face dropped, replaced by his usual happy smile.

"Nice to meet ye den, Calvon. Opeila's been talkin' 'bout me, ye said? Said good things, did she? I'd hope so."

Another question Dan's incredible, but very ADHD mind came up with: Why would Calvon want to meet him just because Opeila was saying good things about him? Unless she was saying that Dan was the epitome of awesomeness, and a descendant of The Morrigan herself or something.
Which he was.... roughly 90% sure he was not. He WAS awesome, but he bore little resemblance to how The Morrigan was described. He didn't even LIKE crows. Nasty cawing bastards.

"Name's Dan Palmer. How'r ye doin'? Want ta have a chat, do ye?"
Dan put emphasis on his first name being 'Dan'. Not' Daniel'. It always irritated him to be called that.

Upon hearing Calvon speak, the barefooted boy’s neck would snap in his direction, with furrowed brows and heated eyes, Daniel would scowl at the boy for a few seconds. Seeing the older boy upset at him tickled something deep within Calvon--a tickling that would cause his ill-birthed smile to decay into a more perverted smirk. It was cute. Daniel, who was rightfully annoyed, was giving off a vexed look. But due to Calvon’s inherent, competitive feelings toward the boy, the sight only amused him. He wanted to poke him more. He wanted to give into his primal urge of dominance. He wanted to prove that he was better both to Daniel…and to himself.

But he restrained himself. Now, was not the time. He was still in the beginning phases of his plans; a plan taught to him by his parents. If the Fauxs weren’t teaching their son about viewing the bigger picture, they were attempting to teach him, what they believed to be, a full-proof way to accomplish goals that involved other people. When it came to people, everyone was the same, generally speaking. Yes, everyone had their unique flaws. Yes everyone had their unique strengths and weaknesses. But when it really came down to it--when it came down to the mental psyche of individuals--everyone was essentially the same. This was an ideology that the Faux believed in and made sure that their son--their heir--understood at a young age. Because of this, they made sure to educate their son on not only being able to read people but to understand them. Because it was through understanding that the true fun could begin.

See when it came to goals that involved people--specifically getting rid of certain people--there was no way to deal with them, if they weren’t properly understood. But once they were understood, now anyone with the proper knowledge on them can manipulate them any way they please. And manipulation, no matter how negatively connotated it is, is necessary for anyone trying to accomplish anything. It would be through manipulation that a person would assimilate themselves into a group, and it was through manipulation that you could have that group aid you in whatever it is they were needed for. Conversely, it was through that very same manipulation that a person could use the very people that make up the group to tear each other down and apart. The latter was Calvon’s plan at Hogwarts.

He needed to reach out to people. He needed to assimilate into as many groups as possible--make friends, alliances, and partners who could spread his name to as many people as possible. It would be through these interconnected webs of connections that Calvon would finally discern the hierarchy, find the top players, assimilate with them, and then have those very same top players tear each other down until he was at the undisputed top. Now of course, this was too well thought up of a plan for the eleven year old to fully grasp--if he could grasp that at this age, his parents would be ecstatic. All Calvon knew was that he needed the strong to take down the strong, so now he was out.

To find the strong.

The boy in front of him, although having saved a life didn’t fit into that category in Calvon’s eyes. Perhaps he was blinded by affection and jealousy, or perhaps he was right. Only time would tell, but for now, it was time to be cordial.

“Nice to meet ye den, Calvon. Opeila's been talkin' 'bout me, ye said? Said good things, did she? I'd hope so.” Daniel’s scowl had evaporated into a happy smile by the time he said those words. He’d continue to address Calvon saying, “Name's Dan Palmer. How'r ye doin'? Want ta have a chat, do ye?”

Calvon didn’t have to use his observation skills to notice that Daniel Palmer didn’t appreciate being called “Daniel” and seemed to very much prefer the shortened “Dan” instead. The young Slytherin would make a mental note of this as he scratched the back of his head and lighty laughed with embarrassment--a habit invisible to him.

“Oh, my bad!” The eleven yearr old would quickly respond before moving across to where Dan sat.

Talk about a bad first impression. Calvon would think to himself as he pulled out a chair from across the boy and sat down. As he sat down, he’d meet Dan’s eyes with his own emerald green ones--now in a state of observation. With Dan having finished talking, it was Calvon’s turn to speak. The game was on; it was time to gain some information.

“Well, yeaaaaah! She only said amazing things about you. Why’d I look for someone she said bad things about?” He'd say with an honest laugh.

Calvon was now in his people state. It was like a switch that the boy didn’t even know he had. He spewed warmth, authenticity, and genuine interest. With a large smile on his face, the boy’s vibe and energy were awfully contagious. And why wouldn’t they be when the boy himself was so happy to be talking--happy to be moving forward with his plans.

“But I’m good, I guess.” He’d shrug. “I’m still recovering from some injuries I got over the summer.” Calvon would say as he licked the inside of his left cheek before shrugging once again. “But yea, I just wanted to chat since Opeila’s the first person I met since I got out of the infirmary a couple of days ago. So I figured someone she talked well about would be a nice person to meet is all...I just don’t really know anyone since I’ve been out of school for so long.”

Between his energy and his statements, it was easy to believe the boy. Everything he said was true after all. It was now a question of whether the barefooted Dan Palmer would receive him in a similar manner in which he spoke.

What would Dan do?

If the ends justify the means, then shouldn’t we wait to see how things turn out?

Dan had indeed noticed the smirk Calvon had when their eyes met. It seemed that he may derive some enjoyment from Dan's annoyance. It went away quickly enough, however, which told Dan he wished to keep that little fact hidden.
Dan began to wonder what his real intentions were. He was a Slytherin. There was usually a high chance of someone having ulterior motives in his house. And Calvon here was giving a good few telltale signs of hiding his intentions. Andrew Vance, his best friend, was one of the rare exceptions to Slytherin's semi-underhanded stereotype. Dan himself rarely had ulterior motives as well, though that was not to say that he was incapable of being devious. If Calvon was looking to accomplish something here, Dan supremely doubted it was just to come and chat.

For one thing, he mentioned that he only recently met Opeila. Which meant he couldn't have been looking all that long for him. And he wanted to meet Dan just because Opeila was singing his praises? That seemed a bit strange to Dan. In addition, his information network would have informed him of Calvon's hunt for him.

...... Okay, he didn't have an information network, but GODS that would have been cool. He decided he needed to get on that. Have a network of spies all through Hogwarts, feeding him information on all the houses...

Dan brought himself back to the present. That fantasy could be realized later. Right now, he had a potential problem. Calvon, admittedly, did not seem very impressive. He was not physically strong, and had already given away that he had ulterior motives to meeting with him.

This however, brought up another question in Dan's ADHD mind: If he had been looking for him, why had no one in Slytherin told him 'Oh, Dan? Yeah, he's in Salazar dorm. Maybe look there?'
Its not like his dorm location was a secret. He was also the only barefooted person in Slytherin. He THOUGHT he was the only barefooted person in all of Hogwarts, but Ruka from Gryffindor also rarely wore shoes. And he had noticed Selim was wearing bandage wrappings and nothing else on his feet.

Point being, Dan should have been relatively easy to find. Calvon's difficulty in finding him made little sense.

However. Dan noticed something else. Calvon had said he got injured over the summer, and was out of school for a while.
These things combined made Dan recall what had happened at the London Quidditch stadium. The Fight Club.
Did Calvon... He DID recall seeing someone there, similar to how Calvon looked. He didn't partake in the fights though. Victor, as one of his last actions, told him to run from the place, after Dan had apologized to him. So he did. And when Victor.... When Jack had gotten Victor killed, everything was revealed to be an illusion. That was where he had saved Opeila.

Calvon did seem to want to meet Dan because of Opeila.
Well, there was one solution here, and that was to uncover his motives.

Dan continued to smile.

"Well, What do ye wanna talk about? I can read later, me schedules open."
Who is Daniel Palmer, Savior of Opeila? Daniel Closed
The barefooted boy continued to smile as Calvon spoke to him. There didn’t seem any form of hostility and malice from the third-year--at least not visibly expressed. Soon after he finished his own sentence, Dan would ask Calvon to lead the conversation--asking whatever he wanted to know as his schedule appeared to be more than open. The statement would cause the smile on Calvon’s face to grow wider and brighter. What did he want to know? The answer was simple--everything. Calvon not only had a whole list of things he wanted to ask, but he was sure that once he got his original questions answered that there’d be more follow-up questions he’d love to ask. But the first thing he had to ask dealt with the elephant in the room--or lack thereof.

“So, Dan, tell me. Why exactly do you not wear shoes? You don’t care if other people will judge you?”

Calvon’s face turned slightly inquisitive as he asked the question. There was merit to it after all; Dan Palmer was one of, if not the only, student who walked around the castle without shoes. It was not only attention grabbing but dangerous--which is wearing shoes were so commonplace in modern society. Not wearing shoes could result in aches throughout the body, infections that affect the feet themselves such as changing the appearance, color, and odor. Thankfully, Dan’s feet carried no odor. Calvon probably wouldn’t have been able to make it through a conversation with him otherwise. Potential odor aside, it was clear that wearing shoes were much better for people as opposed to not wearing shoes--feet were the beginning of the immune system! Cold feet made it easier to get sick in cold weather after all, and it was November.

After Dan would answer the initial question, and if not asked a follow-up question, Calvon would continue his assessment of Dan. “I said before that Opeila was the reason that I was looking for you, but that’s not all. Opeila was the first person I met here, and given that I don’t know anyone else, I thought that friends of Opeila would probably be nice and cool people as well. You know. People who a new student could hang out with...and at least, maybe, help or show me how to survive here at Hogwarts. I’d much rather avoid more broken bones.”

Calvon was now warmly laughing and grinning. The genuinity that radiated from the boy was blinding, and his honest demeanor helped his case. Calvon was effectively the new kid on the block, and not knowing anyone in, not only his class but the entire school was not only disheartening but overwhelming. He needed to be in cohort with the nicer people around the castle as it’d not only help him reach out to other people quickly, but it’d also inadvertently protect his reputation. Of course, the young boy wasn’t thinking that far ahead--that’d not only be impressive but frightening for a child his age. But Calvon’s actions were somewhat intentional and that, in and of itself, made his situational awareness a praiseworthy attribute. His internal understanding of situations, despite lacking the ability to put them into words, and ability to read people through observations is what made the boy different from the rest--not because he was naturally gifted but because he just put in the work that other people didn’t.

His parents would be proud.

If the ends justify the means, then shouldn’t we wait to see how things turn out?

Calvon asked Dan his first question and, predictably, it was the same one everyone asked first. 'Why don't you wear shoes?'
Honestly. Was it that big a deal? It wasn't that long ago when most Irish children were barefoot.
This however, slightly confused Dan. If he had ulterior motives, why open with that one? Unless of course he was trying to lull Dan off of his guard. But he doubted that.
Dan decided that he may as well answer the question. He saw little harm in doing so.

"Well, if yer that curious about my feet, shoes lead to a variety'a problems. Malformed toes, skeletal issues, they're a breedin' ground for fungus, and they make yer feet smell like death.
The benefits'a not wearin' the damn t'ings include better foot position when walkin', better control, it helps develop yer mind, it keeps yer feet dry so no fungus can grow and no odor can form, ye save loads'a money, and most'a the "problems" with it can be solved by watchin' where yer goin'. De stupid t'ings feel like prisons, constrictin' me so."

Now though, it was Dan's turn to steer the conversation.

"So, what are your hobbies? I enjoy cookin', Gaming, and playin' with me mates in Dingle.
Oh, and to answer yer question, no. I don't give a flyin' shag if people judge me for being barefooted."
