Stumbling upon @Paige Chase in the Library

One thing Simon Kincaid learned quickly early on was that quidditch was a hot topic when it came to the other Huffpuffs in the Boys' Dormitories. Sometimes it was talking about the house teams - who would be on it, who would be their biggest competitor, what broomstick someone was using, or some play tactics that might grant them a win. Other times it was a larger scope and professional quidditch would be discussed, with favorite teams and favorite players being at the forefront of the conversation.

It all sounded interesting enough but for a boy who couldn't venture outside on a sunny day, there wasn't much point in putting much attention to the sport. It was like back home in London. His friends all liked to participate in a variety of sports and while he did do squash, he also many times took an alternative activity and found chess or reading instead.

Reading had become quite a pastime to Simon and he leaned more towards the classics but with a new wizarding school at bay, he was very curious to not only see what the Library itself looked like but was quite curious as to what sort of books were inside its walls.

After getting lost (thinking the Library was on the second floor of the castle), he finally entered into the large space and marveled at all its glory. This Library was more massive than any other school's library he had attended previously. While there was a welcomeness and warmness to the wooden desks and the comfortable furniture that lined the walls, he immediately headed to the shelves, curious of what titles he might find.

These were just some of the titles he read on the spines of the books on the shelves in front of him. He glanced up to see a small plaque that read 'Charms Section.' Made sense. He knew that much from the Charms class which was all about casting spells.

He walked onward past many other shelves, letting them go for another day. Then before him he saw another plaque that read 'Magical Creatures' and it sparked his curiosity. He remembered thinking someone was going to tell him that something like unicorns, vampires, and werewolves were real since witches and warlocks were. ...Were they? He glanced over these book titles:

Year With the Yeti
Break With a Banshee
Men Who Love Dragons Too Much
Monster Book of Monsters
Wanderings With Werewolves
Voyages With Vampires


...So they were real? No...it couldn't be! Simon reached out to pull one of the werewolf books off the shelves so he could start leafing through it.

He heard the voice and at first felt it was directed toward someone else until he realized he was reading about the subject. Simon glanced over his shoulder down the aisle of shelves that he was standing in to see no one there. Odd.

Figuring it must have been his imagination, he looked back down to the words on the page but still felt as if someone was nearby. Watching. Simon glanced up from the book and that's when he saw her through the open space and smiled. "Oh, there you are," he said with a soft laugh. "Didn't meet to ignore you there."

He still wasn't answering her question though but at least he was addressing her now. "Not so much interested in wolves...I mean, they're fascinating creatures enough, but werewolves. This book...a lot of these books are about werewolves. Here. In the Magical Creature section? I mean..." he paused. It still didn't want to set in that such a thing could be real to him.

"If there ARE such things are werewolves, isn't that fascinating? And if there ARE such things as werewolves and they are here in this section to be projected as truth, that means ALL of this is real. Werewolves, mermaids, trolls, nymphs, banshees, vampires..." His voice trailed off a little. Surely he didn't need to name each and every magical creature that his eyes came across. There were so many and he hadn't known about them for so long. It was astounding!

Werewolves IN Hogwarts? "They let werewolves go to school here?" he asked, but then again he was judging and that wasn't very kind of him. Wasn't a werewolf just like everyone else when it wasn't a full moon? Plus, little did Simon Kincaid know it, but he himself was one of these magical creatures - or at least a result from one. He was, unknown so far to him, a dhampir.

"Sorry, that was rather cruel of me. They SHOULD let them come here and...I think I'd quite like to talk to one sometime. As for me..." he paused to ponder her question. Muggle-born. There were so many new terms that he needed to learn since entering into the wizarding world. Muggle meant non-magic. "Yes, and no. My mum was a witch. She attended Hogwarts but she was very close with her sister - my aunt - so she didn't talk about all this much at all in fear that she'd be envious of it. That and she passed away when I was three so..."

"So it's all very, VERY new to me. So new that it's quite pathetic, actually. I feel like I've got to be one of the dumbest students at this place." But he wasn't dumb in the least, just naive to it all and by no fault of his own. It would be good for him to meet some that weren't immersed into the world previously to their time at Hogwarts - to meet more muggleborns like Paige. "Do you find it gets overwhelming at times? All this? I do."

The girl had picked some chairs that were still near the middle of the library and not near the sofas that lined the windows and for that he was grateful. Even when he wasn't out in the sunlight, the sun that filtered through the windows could sometimes bother him.

"There's absolutely no need to apologize. I unfortunately don't remember her," and it was hard to miss someone you didn't remember. "I live with my Aunt Maggie and no one could have a better aunt than her so really, I'm the lucky one," he smiled brightly.

"That's unfortunate about your parents. Must be rather hard. I've got a friend back home who's parents are divorced and he's always juggling his life - staying with one sometimes, the other one other times. Holidays and such are flipped from one year to the next. He never knows if he should invite one or both to school functions."

Okay, so now he was the one being depressing and he really wasn't doing much to brighten his new friend's mood so he dropped that subject as well. He sat down on one of the comfortable chairs and turned the conversation towards their sorted houses. "I'm a Hufflepuff. You know, from the land of all things wonderful," he smiled. "And oh, the name's Simon." He leaned towards her and stretched out his hand for a handshake - introductions and all.

Getting confused by Ravenclaw, @Paige Chase


He smiled, glad that she was excited for the upcoming holidays. He would be heading back to London to his home and it was where he wanted to be as well. Hogwarts was wonderful, but that didn't mean he didn't get a little homesick from time to time. He figured first years in particular probably had that and wasn't concerned by it.

He thought a moment about what she said about her aunt being a crazy cat lady and smiled. Aunt Maggie might turn into one decades from now if she never started dating. He had teased her about it before but the truth of the matter was the young woman had lots of time as his aunt was only twenty-five.

The girl mentioned that she wanted to become something. A wolf - and yet, she didn't use the term werewolf so he was confused for the moment. "You think you might become an ani-what?" he asked, only catching the first part of what she said.

The boy was picking up on things like quidditch and there had been a lot of talk that year about broom racing. He was starting to not think it so weird that there were classes that they took like history of magic, charms, potions, and the like....and yet here he still stumbled now and again on a term he was clueless on and this was one of them.

And this is why the girl before him was a Ravenclaw and he wasn't. She seemed to know more about the wizarding world than he did, at least when it came to these ani-somethings.

Author talk turned to food talk with @Paige Chase


"I tend to stick to a lot of the classics. Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens, T.S. Eliot, Orson Wells," he named a few. "I guess it's from my primary school days when we would have to read them and try and decipher if they truly should be considered a classic of if they were considered that just based on hearsay alone or fake merit. I don't really know how I got started on all that," he paused to think of it. It probably sounded terribly boring but he had teachers that had made that particular venture quite interesting and it was still instilled in him to this day.

"My aunt works in this bakery bookshop sort of place too. She's always bringing home books for me to read and I don't know, I guess that sort of type just stuck with me. She's always trying to bring home sweets too but that doesn't go over so well," he laughed. Simon liked the taste of savory things a lot more than he enjoyed sweets. In fact, he didn't care much for them and the only sort of candy he actually ate were lemon drops. Perhaps the sourness balanced out the sweetness for him.

"She's bound and determined to find a dessert that I like but so far no cake, no pie, no pastry, no doughnut, nothing of the sort." His Aunt Maggie found that terribly odd for an eleven year old boy and she took it personally as she often came up with the new recipes for the shop.

Being forced to eat cookies with @Paige Chase


He shouldn't have said anything about this because now there were two on this personal journey instead of one. Simon knew that look that Paige had in her eye, that one of determination. A goal had been set and if she was as persistent as his aunt - there was trouble.

He looked down at the cookies and could tell they were well made. All those years of his Aunt Maggie working at a nice bakery had helped him to see that. Still, they just didn't appeal to him but he'd do his best to give it a try.

Simon forced out a kind smile and took one from the container and looked at it before taking a small bite, just bigger than a nibble and he chewed it carefully. "It's got a rather nice consistency to it," he tried for a compliment. The taste? It wasn't bad! It just wasn't his kind of thing.

"Don't take it as a fail, rather a....for those that love cookies, these would most likely be some of the best. I'm almost sure of it." The fact that they were warm still helped an incredible amount as well. "Yes, quite sure of it. I'm, just sadly, not one of those that do." Was that putting it nicely? He wanted to put it nicely. It was never his intention to insult her cooking here!

He didn't like them. "Sorry, I just got excited. I shouldn't have gotten into your business and made you eat something you don't like." Paige put the container away and gave him unopened water to wash away the taste. "So... do you like candy? If so, what kind?" Paige liked giving new friends things. He had to like something. A sudden idea struck Paige. "Hey, we could be detective buddies! Do you know? We can research werewolves and search for clues. Hogwarts is full of hidden clues and mysteries. There is so much we could find!" Paige thought it was a good idea. It sounded fun, and a good way for them to get to know each other better.
Paige shifted through the books on the table. She picked up one and started looking through it. She assumed anyone who was a werewolf would check these books out to see what people thought about them. It made sense. She started looking at the list of people who checked out the book. When you check out a book at Hogwarts, there is a page for you to write your name and date. She didn't know if Simon would join her, but now she was interested.
She took out parchment and wrote what she already knew.

He didn’t want to disappoint her with her cookies, just as he hated disappointing his Aunt Maggie when she brought something new home but it just didn’t work for him. He enjoyed steak, quite well actually, but that was really the only food he craved.

“I - I don’t really like candies. I will eat lemon drops.” There was something about them how the sourness balanced out the sweet so it didn’t seem to be too much.

“And I like your idea of being detectives, I just don’t know if it oversteps any personal boundaries. I mean...if I was a werewolf, I’m not sure if that would be something I’d be okay with others knowing. If they don’t mind, people would know and if they did mind maybe that’s something they want to keep hidden. I don’t know though really. Not like I am one to exactly know how they feel.”

Poor Simon. Here he was so ignorant when it came to the other races because he didn’t even know that he himself was a halfbreed of a magical creature. He didn’t know it yet, as he hadn’t known it in his eleven years thus far that he himself was a dhamphir - a product of a vampire and (in his case) a witch.

Something, most likely logic, was telling him that it was probably not the best ideas to be out and about on a full moon night IF there really were werewolves that attended Hogwarts. Who knew, maybe there were towns surrounding the school as well that had them as well. Still, with the idea of all things magic - including magical creatures such as these - the idea did call to him.

Plus, it sounded as if Paige had made up her mind about going and was planning to whether he was going or not and surely he wouldn't be a good friend to let her go by herself, nor would he be a good student. Something like this required the buddy system. Safety in numbers.

And third, Simon's last time he ventured outside the castle walls was before coming INTO them, when they departed from the Hogsmeade Station off of the Hogwarts Express to the boats that would take them across the way to the school, just before the sorting ceremony. He remembered it well.

Yet, he heard students talk of the Quidditch Pitch, the Grounds, the Courtyard, the Lake...all places he had never been and quite honestly never really planned on going to...but if it was dark there was no harm at all in it.

Yes, he had made up his mind because there were so many reasons to go. "I'm in," he said decisively. "Just tell me when and where and I'll be there."
