Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021

Rhea pulled her fingers through her damp and tangled hair, trying to collect herself. She felt awkward, and a little sweaty despite the cold. Sure, the boats were an adventure, but did it have to be so wet? Not to mention numbing. All she could feel was the adrenaline pumping through her veins and the hollow thrum of her heart. Memories of crashing waves a rocking boat flashed repeatedly through the back of her mind.

She decided to focus on the facts. Facts were good.

Adrenaline, she thought. A hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Prepares your muscles for exertion. Increases blood circulation and quickens breathing. Often induced by stress or fear, like what I’m feeling right now. It helped, a bit, but then she got to thinking about all the microorganisms covering the bodies of the assembled multitude of humans surrounding her. She felt so disgusted at the thought and immediately scolded herself for mentally bringing it up. Now the anxiety was worse. Her heartbeat quickened and she pressed two fingers to her wrist, trying to take her own pulse. There was nothing so she was probably doing it wrong. She groaned inwardly. Maybe they had medical classes here?

She tried to recall the Sorting Hat’s song. Perhaps speculating about which house she would be put in would help calm her nerves. Some good old logic and self-reflection usually did the trick.

Firstly, she reasoned that it was ridiculous to determine where she would stand for the next seven years based on her current traits and personality. She was only eleven, after all, and she knew she would change constantly throughout her life. She was already so different than she had been a mere year ago, and that was different than she had been the year previous. What if she was kind and loyal now, but changed to be rebellious and unruly? A faulty system, certainly. They should at least be able to switch houses as time passed. The best thing she could do in that moment was to determine what house she would fit best in based on her current characteristics.

Characteristic was a hard word. Rhea hoped she had used it correctly, even if it was just in her inner monologue. Monologue was hard too, actually. She had only ever heard it used in the phrase “inner monologue,” but she didn’t actually know the definition.

She was spiraling again, and caught herself quickly. Stop that, she reprimanded mentally.

Okay, what was it? The first house mentioned was Gryffindor, which she remembered was supposed to be full of heroes and soldiers. Bravery was their defining trait. She stared at a couple of older individuals, taking them in. They all had a cocky gleam in their eyes and the way they sat up straight made it clear they held themselves in high regard (although she might have just been fabricating that image based on what she knew about that house). Still, they were pompous prats and she had no interest in joining their table. Rhea paused, wondering why she was so bitter about this, and then decided to pay it no mind. She moved on.

Hufflepuffs were next. They weren’t as bad. They were supposed to be kind and loyal, right? And she knew her own psychology, which had to do with emotions. Weren’t Hufflepuffs all about feelings? (Or was that just another stupid rumor). Anyway, from what she’d heard, they were also a bit soft. Practically the opposite of Gryffindors, who prided themselves on their valor. Speaking of pride, she wasn’t sure hers could take it if she was put in Hufflepuff.

Okay, now she knew something was up. What could it possibly be? Why was she acting this way? Perhaps it was a coping mechanism for her fear. She was feeling bad about herself, so she was projecting it onto the other things she had at her disposal. Well, her mental disposal. Sure, Rhea was logical - sometimes to a fault- but she wasn’t mean. She would stop immediately.

Anywho.

The next was Ravenclaw. That one was perfect in theory, when she had thought about it prior to Hogwarts. After all, their defining trait was smarts, and that was accurate for her, hopefully. However, with firsthand experience in the presence of Ravenclaws she was starting to reconsider. They seemed a little- how to put this- uptight. Not that Rhea wasn’t too, but at least she enjoyed adventures. At least she had some spirit. That wasn’t a mean thing to think, right? It was just factual, what she had gained from her own personal experience. She concluded that it wouldn’t be so bad here, but probably not ideal.

That left Slytherin.

She knew their reputation. She saw the dirty looks they received in the halls. She had read about the part their house had played in a lot of terrible historical events, was aware that they were viewed as the villains. That was absolute rubbish, in her opinion. The current generation of Slytherins probably had nothing to do with any of that dodgy stuff. Perhaps if she was sorted into Slytherin, she could be the one to defend their honor. Also, the Slytherin attributes fit her almost perfectly; cunning, ambition, resourcefulness all matched her values. She was already feeling house pride. Lovely.

Rhea was so absorbed in her thoughts that she was jolted out of her reverie only when her name was called.

“Miller, Rhea!”

She jumped, startled, and flushed with embarrassment. She knew that no one cared, that everyone else was just as afraid as her, but somehow she felt humiliated. It was like she was a small squirming organism under the inspection of a microscope. Metaphors weren’t really her thing, but that seemed about right. She made her way towards the front of the room, fully aware of her every movement, and sat gingerly down on the seat. The Sorting Hat was placed upon her head, and it immediately flopped down over her eyes. In that moment she knew. She was no great witch. She was simply a child playing dress-up.

I sense doubt, said a voice. She had expected it to speak in her head, but it was still rather disorienting. It occurred to her that it was probably reading her thoughts. She loathed that and automatically willed it to get out.

Are you trying to block me? Rhea heard amusement. A futile attempt, but I appreciate your effort. You value your thoughts… oh, you have a great mind… you are exactly what you believe to be without flaw, exactly as you’ve constructed yourself. Hmmm. A word of advice: this is not who you are meant to be. You will change… transform… you believe you belong in Slytherin, because that’s what you want, isn’t it? Ah, but…

What did that mean? She was exactly as she had constructed herself? No, she was just improved. Was it so wrong to be the best version of yourself?

You have much to learn…

She didn’t like havin that extra voice in her head. It threw everything off.

Annoyance… hmmm… you are extremely clever, rational, analytical, all traits of a Ravenclaw.

Okay, so she was not a Slytherin. She was going to be a Ravenclaw. She begrudgingly accepted her fate.

I wouldn’t be so sure… you have qualities of all the houses, true, but most overwhelmingly, you have courage. You long for adventure. You are a complicated mind, Miss Miller, but I have come to a conclusion.

No. This wasn’t right at all.

“GRYFFINDOR!!!” the Hat shouted.

Everything stopped.

No. NO.

This was wrong. She had plotted it all out, fully analyzed her mind. She had spent her whole life analyzing her mind. This wasn’t who she was! She knew herself better than anyone, and then some stupid magical hat came along to tell her she was always wrong. She was smart. She knew she was right, knew Gryffindor wasn’t where she belonged. Tears of outrage filled her eyes- she hadn’t cried once since infancy- and for the first time in a long time, she felt like a child.

Once it became clear that she wasn’t moving, someone removed the Sorting Hat for her. Just before it was taken off her head, she could’ve sworn it whispered, Logic won’t help you this time, Rhea Miller.

Katniss Bang entered the great hall, nervous and excited about the coming events. Her surname, Bang, was high on the list and after many shouts of;
"Gryffindor!"
"Slytherin!"
"Ravenclaw!"
She heard the name,

"Bang, Katniss!"

She froze for a moment, then, realizing how many people were watching she tried to look confident as she strode up and sat down on the chair. The hat was placed upon her head. She could hear the hat thinking out loud and desperately thought, 'Ravenclaw, Ravenclaw.' As the Sorting Hat announced its decision she heard a roar from the furthest table on the left. Her heart sunk. She had wanted to be in Ravenclaw so badly! She took a deep breath and held in her emotions. She sat down and met the house ghost, 'Nearly Headless Nick', who could see how she felt. She looked over towards the Ravenclaw table.
Food appeared on the plates, distracting her and she started to eat, her sadness washing away. At the end of the meal she was aware of the prefects calling for first years and she walked over to them. The first years were led up to a portrait, the fat lady, where the password was exchanged. As they stepped through the portrait hole, Katniss was aware of a room filled with crimson.

"Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…

Every word spoken, every sight that graced her eyes, was a new piece of information Nora filed, compiled, labeled and reconciled. She was, on one hand, piecing this picture together and gathering information about “magic,” “witches,” “Hogwarts,” etc. (Many things got stowed away in the “who knows???” drawer.) And, on the other hand, she was still trying to figure out with each passing moment how elaborate of a prank this would have to be in order to work.

Of course, Diagon Alley practically made a believer out of her, but that was weeks ago, and she had time to question everything and build up doubts again. Also, her father was with her in Diagon Alley, which means he somehow could have orchestrated it all. He did, after all, have a lot of contacts with a lot of money.

Nora was not one to quickly get her hopes up.

Nora Fletcher.

Her stomach turned. She mentally recited everything the Headmaster said as each little step echoed in the giant, long room.

"Sorting Hat will be placed upon your head. It won't hurt one bit. The Sorting Hat will look into your heart and mind and determine the best place for you…"

All she had to do was put this giant hat over her head and it would decide her fate, tell her who she was, and look at her deepest darkest secrets in front of the entire school. No. Big. Deal.

That, or, the moment she put it on her head, someone would say “gotcha!” and the whole thing would be revealed as a joke. Neither outcome seemed great.

One moment she was walking up the hall past all the students at the long tables, the next, she was there on stage in front of the whole assembly. Of course, most of them weren’t paying attention anyway. The hat came down over her eyes, smashing her short blond hair.

A lonely child I see…” the voice rumbled in her head. She felt like it was cutting right to her core. “but smart, very smart.” It was quiet for a while. As she heard its voice resounding in her mind, she knew in that moment magic… or something… was real. Floating candles? It could be done. Ghostly apparitions? Ha, she knew of hologram concerts. But this voice in her mind? No one could fake that. And also, nobody knew her that well.

She had no idea about the school, or the students, or any of the houses, but when the song had played, the last verse caught her attention.

Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends

There’s a part of you,” the hat was saying, “that desperately wants to achieve something…” she furrowed her brows, both knowing it was correct and desperately wanting to disagree. Nora always kept her head down...

Better be…
SLYTHERIN

Why did that feel like a good outcome? What did it all mean? At least, she figured, she’d be in a house. From what she’d heard, it was wear she could make… friends.

Nora, forgetting herself, sat there so long the Headmaster had to remove the hat. With a wink and a smile, he gestured toward the Slytherin table, where she saw most of the students wearing green scarves with silver stripes. She sat down, looking sheepish, and kept to herself until the food came. As she ate, Nora allowed herself to feel a little elation and excitement. All the delicious food made her feel more at home, and she was weak-kneed after all the anxiety of the sorting hat, so she dared to enjoy the moment and not think so much about everything. Analyzing, processing, and parsing could wait until morning.

I was not meant to be this way, to live this way, to fail so darkly

Emmaline along with the other first years were led through the Entrance Hall and into the Great Hall. The first thought that came to mind was how huge it was and that the ceiling above her looked absolutely beautiful, of course Emmaline knew it wasn't the real night sky but merely bewitched to look like it, still a great accomplishment though. The candles floating steadily above her head lit the path that her and the other first years were meant to take towards the front of the hall and... was that an old hat? Emmaline gaped. She knew they were to be sorted into houses but didn't know it was done by an old hat! The boy next to her scoffed.
"Really?" He mused, "You didn't know we were going to be sorted by the hat?" He chuckled and moved forward to walk by his friend.
Emmaline's cheeks burned a bright shad of red, how was she supposed to know? I mean yeah she grew up in a magical family but this was beyond her. And besides, who was expecting an old hat?
Emmaline composed herself just as the old hat began to move, sadly this shocked her even more and her jaw fell slack again as the hat began to speak through a rip at the front. To Emmaline's further surprise the hat began to sing. Emmaline did not pay attention to the song that echoed through the large room, her mind was far to busy racing through the possible spells that had to have been casted on the item of clothing in front of her to make it speak. All of this was new to the poor girl and she was struggling with the idea that a hat could speak.

Finally the hat had stopped and the supposed professor who was leading the new students stepped to the front next to the stool that the hat was placed upon. She opened her lips and began to order the newbies and tell them what to do.
"When I call your name you will step forward, take a seat on the stool and I will place the Sorting Hat on your head, once your house has been announced you will go and sit at the table according to the said house. Do I make myself clear?"
Emmaline along with the other students nodded meekly as they awaited the first name.
The professor called out the first years one by one and they were sorted, one by one. When it came to Emmaline's turn she was shaking in her boots from all the eyes on her.
"Oswald Emmaline!" She was awoken from her stupor by the impatient call of the professor and the giggles of the students around her. Emmaline sped to the stool with her cheeks burning, once she sat down the hat was placed on her head, and to her further embarrassment, it fell over the top of her eyes and seemingly engulfed her small head whole, which was not hard to do.
The small girl trembled and shook in the darkness as she awaited her fate. Suddenly she heard a voice whispering next to her ear.
"Hmm, plenty of knowledge here... oh? Brave I see, not afraid to stand up for others are we? Well... Ravenclaw would be good for you, but I would hate to see such courage go to waste." Emmaline gawked, she was courageous? What? While she was brain storming over this the hat spoke, this time not to her but the people waiting eagerly in their seats around her!
"Gryffindor!"
The hat was lifted off of Emmaline's head as she blinked thrice before standing up shakily and stumbling over to the Gryffindor table. At least she wasn't the last one... right?

Emmaline Oswald Approved.

When i made my way into the great hall, I basically wanted 15 more eyes than I had (and i thought diagon alley was awesome!!)I was AMAZED, the four banners of the houses shone brightly in the morning light the four tables with the cheering peeps, MAN I was excited for this year. Half the crowd that came in with me on the boats were already sorted and finally I got called Wolfclan, Ethan. Only now i noticed that my knees were shaking, my hands too I walked up thinking about Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The hat got placed on my head and it said Ravenclaw yes you would be good there no Slytherin to prove yourself and make friendsYes YES SLYTHERIN and yelled , after a minute, GRYFFINDOR. I walked to the gryffindor table confused,
I thought that I was going to Slytherin. I walked to the table on the far right and sat down. It was Eliana's turn now she walked up shaking like I did but it took longer for her to be sorted and when the hat said RAVENCLAW my heart sunk horribly, at least have us in the same house, MAN this hat is HARSH. Me and the gryffindors went up the staircase to the common room without looking back.

Potayto, Potahto, Tomayto, Tomahto.

As I sat down to get sorted all my fears spilled out, I was scared I was going to disappoint someone in my family. Both my parents and brother were in Gryffindor. As the hat called out SLYTHERIN my brothers face didn't go as I thought, I thought he would be mad at me. He cheered with everyone else. But when the hat was asking me question I really didn't know what to say or do, As the hat said I was cunning but smart , the hat thought Gryffindor or Slytherin, but what to do. I was always good at keeping my grade, but when it came to my attitude I have no off button. When I was little I always got in fight with people in my grade, mostly the people who made fun of me or my friends. I was always a smart kid but I did have dyslexia, so with grades it a b and higher. I tried so hard to make everyone proud but one I just snapped my grades dropped and I got into more and more fight. Now I may look all sweat but when you get on my bad side you stay there. As I walked over to the Slytherin table there was jerks and nice kids, I could tell who was who.

Tory hadn't seen anything like the Great Hall before, with its marvelous ceiling enchanted to look like a sky and it's floating candles giving off a golden glow. Along with the other first years, she had just arrived at Hogwarts, and was full of anticipation to know what house she would be sorted into. Since her mum had gone to Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, this was a whole new adventure for her. A dusty old hat had been placed on a wooden stool, and she knew it was time for the sorting ceremony. Slowly, students starting getting called up one by one. As more children got called, Tory could feel butterflies in her stomach. Finally, she heard her name get called. Tory felt everybody's eyes on her as she made her way to the stool, and she gingerly took a seat.

Please not Hufflepuff, please not Hufflepuff She thought to herself when the hat had been placed on her head. "Not Hufflepuff, eh? What's wrong with being a Hufflepuff? " The hat crackled, and Tory felt her cheeks glow red. Now she felt bad, but stayed quiet. "Hmm, you're kind, but secretive. Witty, but intense. Maybe Slytherin will fit you, help you become powerful. I know you want to be powerful." Tory gulped. "Bravery...courage...yes, yes-" The hat mumbled to himself and Tory became more and more nervous. "GRYFFINDOR!" The sorting hat shouted, and everybody clapped and cheered. Tory got up, relieved, and took a seat at the Gryffindor table next to some third years. Shortly after, a jaw dropping feast magically appeared on the long Gryffindor table, and Tory dove into the feast.

Side note: I know it's short it's my first time doing this!

Nothing was quite as Blythe expected. From the journey there, to the strange hat the Headmaster had just presented to them.

The journey had been long, and a bit draining. She slept most of the way there on the train, too upset to interact much with the other students traveling with her. This was difficult for her. She had never been away from her parents and siblings for very long, and the prospect of being away from them for months at a time was dismaying to say the least. But, this was her gift. This was what the universe had given her. Magic. She had no intention of wasting something so grand, and besides, she was eleven years old, not a baby.

All the way up the path to the castle, she had been in awe. This was something out of a fairytale. A Disney movie, maybe. It felt like her body was buzzing, but whether that was with anxiety or excitement, she couldn't tell. Either way, she was energized, and this made the long wait until her turn difficult to bear. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other and fiddled with her hair as the line crept along.

Finally. The hat slid onto her head, and she felt a strange sensation, like something was looking inside of her. She felt nervous, and wondered what flaws it might find. Maybe it would tell her she didn't belong here at all. She sighed, and waited.

Finally. One word. Said with certainty. "Gryffindor."
Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021
The last several weeks had been chaotic for Henry, to say the least. A while back, he couldn’t quite remember how long ago, he had been visited by a person claiming to be a wizard. They said they were a professor at a school for witches and wizards and that Henry was a wizard. At first, no one could believe it was possible. Leena wouldn’t stop laughing and Daniel and Diana kept asking for him to cast a magic spell. It had been rather difficult to listen to the professor talk, as was usual in his house, but he got the basic idea of what was to come.

That didn’t stop it from being overwhelming.

Henry was usually very good at handling new situations. All he had to do was make someone laugh and the tension in the air would dissipate. However, with all the shopping and the sheer amount of new people and places, Henry had little time to joke about. They went to the shopping district, he forgot the name, and then later to the train platform, also forgot the name. The train was called the Hogwarts Express. The name was easy to remember since he heard ‘Hogwarts’ so often in the weeks leading up to the first day of school.

It was a boarding school, too, which was already making Henry a tad uneasy. He had grown up with his older siblings. Though Jessica and Liam had since moved out or started uni, he was still used to going home to his family. Not having home cooked meals at a table so loud they could barely hear their own thoughts was going to be strange.

Despite all the trouble, Henry had taken a lot of time to cool down. The train ride was relatively silent and the views spectacular. Getting into boats upon arrival, Henry had been nervous he would fall out. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. They were led into the castle and Henry got the biggest shock of his lifetime.

His family had been on vacations all over the UK, he’d seen a castle or two. Hogwarts, however, was another thing entirely. With high, vaulted ceilings and solid, carved stonework, it stood proud as it welcomed its newest residents. Just the main entrance was breathtaking. The Great Hall, however, gave Henry culture shock. The enchanted ceiling, the floating candles, the students. Everything was insane. He’d seen a little magic done by the professor who explained to him that he was a wizard, but this was another level.

All the first years filed up to the front of the hall, Henry was somewhere among the middle of them, still taking everything in. When a voice called attention to itself, he directed his focus to the front, though his thoughts continued to drift. When the hat began to sing, however, his focus was drawn to it. He’d heard vaguely about the four houses and felt an affinity with the description of Hufflepuffs. It was exactly what he though of himself as and he was sure he would get sorted there.

After a ton of names were called, it was finally his turn. Henry gently pushed his way through the crowd of first years still ahead of him and stepped up to the stool. He looked nervously at the Headmaster and was given a reassuring nod in return. He sat on the stool and the hat was placed on his head.

“Ahh, what an interesting mind you have. Creative and clever, yet kind and caring. You’d do anything for those you care about, wouldn’t you?” The hat’s question remained unanswered and he continued to speak. “You would fit well in Hufflepuff, loyal to no end, generous and thoughtful. But your mind. Oh, your mind is complex, clever, constantly thinking. Your kind heart may very well be important to you, but your mind will have you in RAVENCLAW!”

Henry jumped slightly, as the shout had been rather loud. He was met with applause from most of the tables, but lots of roaring from one specific table. He realized, after a beat, that he should probably get off the stool for the next student. Slowly, he sat down at the Ravenclaw table and was met with greetings from those around him. Ravenclaw? He knew very little about the houses, but it didn’t sound like Ravenclaw described him at all.
