[font=times new roman]as much as he despises his father for abandoning their family without leaving so much as a note, hiram finds himself unable to part with his father's ring, too big for his own small, smooth hands devoid of any roughness that his father's own hands possessed. the ring can be usually be found around his neck, strung up on a thin silver chain and safely tucked beneath the collar of his shirt. misfortune strikes when the clasp on the chain breaks without hiram's notice as he makes his way across the school grounds. upon reaching the entrance to the castle, hiram shrugs off his winter robe to discover the chain and the ring have disappeared from his neck. frantically, he retraces his steps but the newly fallen snow makes it difficult for just one person to search the grounds. after seeing him digging fruitlessly in the snow, y/c approaches hiram to see what the commotion is about. reluctantly, hiram digresses and admits he needs y/c's help and the two search the grounds together. during their search, the two chatter as they hurriedly search before the looming grey clouds bring another heavy snowfall. once the ring is found, the two strangers part ways as friends and promise to see each other again before the winter break.

[font=times new roman]hiram stumbles upon a crumpled up letter beneath one of the tables in the great hall. surprisingly, the letter is addressed to him but instead of receiving it face to face, he had chanced upon it by accident. after reading the contents of the letter that was written from someone's deepest feelings, hiram is eager to meet the author to confront them over the letter, if only to boost his own ego and play with their feelings for his own amusement. upon figuring out who had written the fateful letter, he finds himself unable to continue with his original plan to toy with them and instead decides to write a letter of his own, which he hand delivers along with the crumpled letter. (notice: any gender is welcome to apply!)

[font=times new roman]hiram is no stranger to ruffling feathers with his arrogant words and abrasive personality, but this rivalry between the y/c and hiram goes beyond the playfulness of a friendly competition. the dislike for each other is mutual and when the two are forced to spend time together against both their wishes, especially when that situation means tolerating each other to get out of it. between throwing insults at each other and threats, their loathing for each other only grows when hiram's taunting goes beyond that of a schoolyard bully and cuts deep in y/c's past.

[font=times new roman]tormented by homesickness and loneliness, hiram distracts himself with the library's vast collection of books, finding that the worlds he could escape to while reading was a much better alternative to the harsh reality that waited outside when he shelved the book. hiram is drawn out of his fantasy world when the noise of someone sitting beside him breaks his focus. irritated at first, he dodges questions about the melancholy emanating as tears that start to patter on the cover of the book he had been previously reading. it isn't until y/c confesses that they've felt the same lack of belonging that hiram genuinely opens up with help of a patient mind and offer of friendship.
