Lunch with a Friend
@Paige Chase
Harmony sat on the ground with her back against a tree with food out in plates in front of her. She and her new best friend, Paige Chase, had agreed to have lunch outside instead of in the Great Hall. Harmony was currently waiting for Paige to show up. She wasn't here yet, but she didn't have a doubt that she would show up. Harmony trusted Paige. Harmony stared up into the sky as she relived her 100% friendless life ,outside of her family, before coming to Hogwarts. Her parents and younger brother, Arthur, had always been there for her and had always done everything in their power to help her and make her feel loved, cared about, and completely worth everything, but her social life could not have been more different. She had had no friends what so ever. Harmony still remembered, like it had been yesterday, becoming friends with Paige up in the Ravenclaw dorm rooms. Harmony thought that that had been the best day of her life. Or, the best day in her life according to her social life. Harmony's surroundings vanished as she relived making her first friend while she patiently waited for Paige to show up.

Harmony heard fast foot steps. She smiled to herself, knowing only one person would be in that much of a hurry. She looked to the doors that led into the castle and saw Paige running towards her, carrying some food. Paige waved at Harmony and she waved back. Paige got nearer to Harmony as she called, "Hey, Harmony! Perfect spot!" Harmony smiled. Paige sat down next to her and gave her a side hug, to which Harmony leaned into. Paige let go of her and started to eat roast and gravy with Yorkshire pudding. She put some pudding into her mouth and closed her eyes. Harmony found quite amusing to watch Paige act like she hadn't tasted something that good. Harmony like the pudding, but it wasn't her favorite. Paige looked up at Harmony and asked, "So what did you get, Harmony?" Harmony looked down at her food. There was a good amount of food, but Harmony only truly got hungry at dinner or if she hadn't eaten for a while. You could call her a snake for only eating basically once a day, but she wouldn't like that so no one called her that. No one wanted to see her bad side. "You know me. Not much." She pushed her tray a bit closer to Paige so that she could see it. There was soup and a few rolls, chicken, peas, and carrots. People had tried to get her to eat more, but she couldn't. She just wasn't hungry. She didn't have an eating disorder, it was just how she was.

Paige showed Harmony a mini cooler that she had brought out with her. She took out a container with two desserts in it. "Want some? I made them myself. I haven't tried them yet. I thought we could try them together?" Paige asked Harmony. Harmony thought that the desserts looked really good, but thought that she should probably eat her food first so that she would actually get something to eat. "Yeah I would love to try it. But, I think that I should probably eat what I have first. I don't want you to feed me when I say that I lost my appetite!"Harmony laughed. When Harmony had told Paige about her not eating a lot, she hadn't argued, but she did say that if Harmony didn't eat enough that she would make her eat so that she wouldn't get sick. As much as Harmony hated the thought of her being fed, she just sometimes couldn't eat, but she truly appreciated that Paige would do it, and she knew that at one point or another, she would lose her appetite and wouldn't want to eat, but would be forced to and would thank Paige for it when she didn't collapse in the middle of the hallway from not eating enough, which had happened before at her muggle school.

As Paige started to eat again after laughing, a bit of her food fell off of her fork and landed on her dress. "Aw! No!! That's like my favorite out of all my casual dresses! She wiped at the food with a napkin but it still left a stain. "Do you have a jacket I could borrow, Harmony?" Harmony was wearing a black skirt with dark red leggings under it. On top, she was wearing a dark red short sleeved shirt with a long sleeved jean jacket over that. Harmony wanted to give Paige her jacket to borrow, but she was cold. She kept shivering even though it was a nice day out. The sun was out and it looked like it should be warm outside. It didn't look like it should be cold out, and it most defiantly didn't look like it should be the temperature for people to be shivering. But she wasn't sick. She couldn't remember the last time that she had gotten sick. It's the wind. It has to be. Yeah that's it. Hopefully. Harmony thought. She took her jacket off and gave it to Paige to borrow. As Harmony slipped off her jacket for Paige, she could tell instantly Harmony was cold. It wasn't cold out at all. It was nice out. It was probably just the wind, although to Paige it felt nice. Paige shook her head. "If you need it then I don't want to take it." She gave the jacket back to Harmony. She then began to wonder if she was talking too much all this time sitting here. How much has she talked? She didn't mean to talk so much, but she was excited that she made a new friend. She looked down at her dress. hmmm. I wonder if I could... She rummaged through her bag and found what she was looking for. It was a ball of lace, white, and it was wide enough so that if she tied it around her waist, it would cover the stain. She cut some off and tied it into a bow behind her back. "There. That should work for now. What do you think?" She examined it and adjusted it. "It's not too bad." The white didn't clash with her casual maroon dress at all, actually. Yeah, I can make this work for now.

Paige gave Harmony's jacket back saying, "If you need it then I don't want to take it." Paige began to go through her bag. When she found what she was looking for, she pulled it out. In her hand she held a ball of white lace. She tied it into a bow on the back. It looked like she was wearing a lace corset. There. That should work for now. What do you think? It's not that bad." Paige said as she adjusted it to her liking. Harmony thought it looked good. The white went well with her dress. "Yeah. I like it. It matches." Harmony said.
She sat in silence while Paige started to eat again. Harmony started to braid her hair again. Harmony really didn't like this habit but she didn't know how to break it! She guessed that the one nice thing about the habit was that people knew when she was thinking. Which meant that she wasn't usually interrupted doing her thought process. It didn't matter how much time went by, Harmony didn't think that she would ever get used to the fact that she had a friend. A real live friend! She thought that maybe that was why she had bonded so well with Paige. They were both lonely and in need of a friend. Not a person that says that they're a friend and then is never there for them, but someone that would truly do anything for the other person. Harmony wondered why Paige had wanted to be her friend. Harmony really wanted to think that it was simply because they were destined to be friends, but the hate letter that she had "accidently" dropped on Paige's bed in the dorm rooms kept entering her thoughts. Harmony gathered up her courage, preparing to ask the question that had been nagging at her since the beginning. Harmony turned to Paige and asked her, "Paige, can I ask you something?" Without waiting for a response, Harmony continued, "This isn't going to come out right, but why did you become my friend?"Harmony regretted asking the question as soon as it left her lips. Paige froze where she was and looked at Harmony, who quickly backtracked, "That's not what I meant. God why did I saw it like that? What I meant to say is that I absolutely love having a friend. I truly means the world to me! But I've been thinking about when we first met. Back up in the dorm room. You know, when I "accidently" dropped that letter on you bed?"Harmony finger quoted "accidently", I'm just wondering, did you want to be my friend because you felt bad for me or if you because you wanted to be my friend. I get that this probably isn't the best time to ask it, and I don't know if there will ever be one, but I need to know. So, did you become my friend because you felt bad for me? Or because you really wanted to be my friend?"Harmony held her breath, hoping that she hadn't just ruined her friendship.

She looked at Harmony. Harmony didn't trust her. Her anxiety came back.

Harmony sat motionless. Paige had just ran away in tears. Harmony noticed something on the ground where Paige had been sitting. Her bracelet! What had Harmony done? She had just wanted to know if their friendship was based on pity or if it was real. How could that have possibly upset her? Harmony felt stunned. She wanted to cry. To shout. To do something. But she had learned that crying doesn't do anything to fix anything. She hadn't cried in at least 2 years and she wasn't about to start now. Harmony put Paige's bracelet into the pocket of her skirt, slid back into her jacket, and cleaned up the food. Once the area was clean, which took about 5 minutes, Harmony went to find Paige. She needed to explain to her what she had meant. She didn't mean to upset her. She would never want to upset her. Harmony checked the common room, dorm room, and the Great Hall, but Paige wasn't there. Harmony was glad that it was the weekend so that she wouldn't be rushing through classes weighed down. Harmony went to check the library. She needed Paige to listen, to understand, to realize that Harmony hadn't meant to do anything to upset her. As she made her way to the library, Harmony began to wonder why Paige had reacted the way that she did. Harmony really couldn't find anything wrong with the words that she had said. Upon entering the library, Harmony saw Paige sitting in a chair in one of the last rows of books. Her head was in her arms and she looked like she was crying. Harmony's heart broke. She hated seeing her friend like this. Harmony put her left hand on Paige's right shoulder, startling her. Paige jumped. "Paige?"

Paige wanted to explain. "its just... what you said is similar to what my muggle friend Patricia said to me before she started yelling at me for being a terrible friend. It was because I was keeping the fact I got a letter from Hogwarts from her. She knew I was keeping something." She looked at her lap. "I'm sorry. I don't even know what went wrong this time." Another tear fell into her lap. Paige fidgeted with the edge of her dress. She slowly looked up. "I just have something for you before you leave." She handed Harmony the cookies. Paige handed Harmony a box with a letter on top of it. She opened it and read:
Dear Harmony~
It has been only a couple of days since we became friends. I want you to know I am thankful for you. You were the light when my world was dark. You are a true friend and someone who I know will have my back even in the darkest hours. One question, can we be best friends? Thank you for all you do!

Harmony smiled and looked up at Paige. Harmony put the box and letter on the table in front of them and sat down in a chair next to Paige. She took Paige's hands in her own said, "Ay, Paige, look at me, girl. I would love us to be best friends. More than anything! I am so sorry about what happened between you and Patricia. I had no idea that my words came across like that. You didn't do anything. I trust you completely. I should have worded my words better. It's one of the things that I hate about myself. I am so insensitive! I was simply curious if you wanted to be friends because of the letter or because you really wanted to be friends. It was a completely insensitive question. I should have known that you wanted to be my friend because you wanted to. I would do anything for you. Really. I hate that I upset you. I never wanted to do anything like that. I would never want to hurt you. I am really sorry that I brought back those awful memories. I understand if you are still upset with me. I'll also get if you don't want to be friends anymore because of those memories. I don't know what I'll do without you, but I will be ok with whatever you want. Just know that I truly am sorry. You deserve someone that you can always trust and I understand if I'm not that person." Harmony hugged Paige and was relieved when she didn't push her away. Harmony pulled away and squeezed Paige's hand before letting go. Harmony picked up the letter and box and started to leave the library as her sight became blurred.
Paige handed Harmony a box with a letter on top of it. She opened it and read:
Dear Harmony~

I should have known that you wanted to be my friend because you wanted to. I would do anything for you. Really. I hate that I upset you. I never wanted to do anything like that. I would never want to hurt you. I am really sorry that I brought back those awful memories. I understand if you are still upset with me. I'll also get if you don't want to be friends anymore because of those memories. I don't know what I'll do without you, but I will be ok with whatever you want. Just know that I truly am sorry. You deserve someone that you can always trust and I understand if I'm not that person." Harmony hugged Paige and was relieved when she didn't push her away. Harmony pulled away and squeezed Paige's hand before letting go. Harmony picked up the letter and box and started to leave the library as her sight became blurred.
