Everly was hungry, to put it simply.

Of course, being unable to sleep like the Everly Charlton she was, Everly was up at 2 AM looking for something to eat.

She'd laid in bed for the past several hours, staring up at the ceiling. When her eyes weren't drooping she decided to go find something to eat. Everly climbed down from her four poster bed, careful not to make a noise should she wake someone. She took small steps away from the Girls Dormitory, cringing hard when the floor creaked.

Everly approached the Common Room and her face changed when she saw that the fire was lit. Someone was - or had been - down here, and Everly wasn't sure whether or not she'd get in trouble for this. She hurried onwards and stepped out of the Fat Lady portrait, wrapping her cloak tighter around her as if that would stop a Prefect or Professor from finding her.

Everly continued to walk down the multitude of stairs, unsure where she was going. Deciding that she could curl up with a nice book, she hurried downstairs towards the first floor, her feet softly making contact as she tried to be as quiet as possible as to not get in trouble. Passing a group of portraits that were chattering angrily, she realized that someone had already came by. Oh, for heaven's sake.

Everly whirled right into the library, walking briskly past shelves. She'd quickly pull a book out and read it. No one would ever know and she'd be perfectly safe, right? Everly turned around one shelf and froze. Caught in the search of a book, her eyes wide, she whirled right into another student, who sat in an armchair, almost squinting at her. Everly narrowed her eyes and studied the other girl. She didn't seem to be much older than her, perhaps a first year or second year. Gryffindor robes, but Everly didn't recognize her. Silence formed and Everly decided to break the silence first.

"So." She coughed. "Are those cookies?"

Everly stood there, frozen, peering at the other girl in a curious and sort of frightened way. "Oh Merlin's beard, are you crazy?" Everly let out a sort of strangled sound, like a mixture between a snort, laugh, and cry.

"Clearly I am," Everly grumbled, fidgeting with the sleeve of her cloak. The other girl began to laugh, Everly sat there staring, wondering what in the world was so funny. She eyed the plate of cookies.

"Sorry, you nearly scared me to death. I was just counting the steps until I was punished for detention the rest of the school year."

Everly let out a snort, clearly more at ease with someone her age and in her house than with someone else. "For heaven's sake, you scared the... uh... shirtballs out of me, I very nearly had a heart attack right then and there." The girl smiled and gestured at the armchair across from hers, so Everly plopped down right in it. She began munching on a cookie.

"So and what drives you to the library in the middle of the night?"

Everly chewed and swallowed as she thought of a way to explain her embarrassing situation. "So... uhm... see, there was this stomach. And it was hungry. And it couldn't sleep - I mean, if stomachs can sleep. So I figured I'd get a book or something." She shrugged and folded up her arms, as if in defense. "My name's Everly. Everly Charlton. You?"

Being the stupid Everly she was, she decided to say the first thing on her mind.

"My toes are cold."

The young Gryffindor's lips twitched and she brushed a crumb off the corner of her mouth. Her mind was already at work, as it loved to kickstart at night, making it hard for the girl to fall asleep. She thought about the other girl's words, and the more she thought it actually began to make sense. It even seemed a bit funny, to be honest. "A weird coincidence, if one," She spoke, her mind instantly analyzing the other's reaction. Did her words sound too weird? Did she come across as too cold? Maybe too idiotic? Everly really needed to stop overthinking things.

The other girl introduced herself as Haley. Everly's lips curled into a small smile. "Nice to meet you too, Haley." Everly really couldn't judge Haley for talking while eating though, Everly honestly did that herself all the time and besides, these cookies were good. Everly inwardly cringed when Haley spoke too loud, her mind racing to all the possibilities. What if someone heard? What if they were caught? Would her parents be informed? Would she get in trouble?

Haley rummaged through her bag, which Everly hadn't noticed she'd brought until now. A few moments later Haley looked up and offered a pair of socks. Warm, fluffy socks. Everly would be lying if she said she disliked those fluffy socks, because they were so soft and comfy and FWUFFY-

Cough.

Everly's hand reached out and grabbed the pair of socks. "Your grandmother seems nice," she commented. "Mine is-" Her lips closed around the words she was about to say. Mine is an accused murderer. Ah, the people at Hogwarts needn't know that. Not yet. She grinned and leaned back in the armchair, her hand clutching the socks.

Everly swiveled around in the chair, searching the area for a clock. "What time is it by now?"

Haley stared at Everly with a very serious look on her face, then a moment later broke out into laughter. Everly chuckled softly under her breath. She was cautious, she really didn't feel in the mood for her first detention. Everly noticed Haley grinning at the thought of her grandmother, and Everly would be lying if she said there wasn't a bit of envy blooming in her. But she squashed that feeling and scolded it.

Everly's eyes gazed briefly over the library's walls. No timepiece in sight. "Perhaps we should head back," she suggested lightly. And then she remembered; yes, the book, the reason she'd come here in the first place. She straightened and jumped softly onto the ground, walking over to examine the shelves of books. Her finger traced the spines as she read them carefully. Spotting the book she had in mind, Everly reached out and grasped the book's spine, flipping through the pages quietly. She slid the book back in place and walked back over to Haley, the pair of socks still clutched in her hand. "I mean, it's up to you. But yes, I do think we should head back before it gets too late." She cringed at the thought. The library was on the first floor of Hogwarts; the Gryffindor dorms on the fifth - Everly was doing quite a lot of sneaking around these days.
