Katie sat down at the Slytherin table that cold November morning with a smile on her face. She had completed her only homework - Charms and Herbology - the night before. This morning, Katie chose to sit next to another first year. The girl has medium length, dark brown hair and one of her eyes is blue, while the other is green. Katie thinks that having different colored eyes is cool.
Hello! Katie greeted warmly, as she sat down next to the first year. Katie hoped the first year would be okay with her sitting next to her. Katie understood that if the girl was nervous or uncomfortable meeting and making new friends, a warm greeting could be overwhelming and make things more uncomfortable for both of them. Katie hoped that they could become friends though. Katie didn't have many friends her age in Slytherin - her own house even - and Katie wished to change that. The girl seemed friendly enough though and Katie figured her getting would be alright for a first introduction.
My name is Katie - but my friends sometimes call me Atie. Katie added with a friendly smile. Katie hadn't liked the nickname Kat that was most commonly associated with Katie. She had found it much too seemingly shallow and awkward on the tongue also. She had liked the nickname Atie though. Katie was okay with being called either Katie or Atie.
What's your name? Katie asked the girl who she had sat down next to. Katie had waffles, pancakes, sausage, eggs, and bacon currently on her plate. Katie was a big eater since she enjoyed food a lot, but due to her extremely fast metabolism, Katie remained relatively thin for a typical eleven year old girl. She brushed a stray hand of hair that would never remain inside of one her thick, dark brown ponytails behind her ear.

First Introductions
Jessie was never much of a morning person at all. She dreaded waking up early and her only wish was to go back to sleep. However this morning, something felt different, Jessie was happier than normal and felt more awake. Perhaps it was because she had finished all her homework last night which never really happened to her.
Being a first year, Jessie didn't have very many friends and because she was a little shy and apprehensive, it prevented her from making them easily. She took a seat at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall alone, where no one else sat. Jessie wasn't very hungry that morning and didn't have a lot on her plate, just some eggs and a slice of bread.
Jessie watched as the other kids laughed and told jokes with their friends. She wished she could work up the courage to go and say hi, but instead she sat quietly, alone. As she was playing with the food on her plate, from the corner of her eye she noticed someone approaching her. It was another first year, she had wavy, medium length brown hair put in two ponytails and was a little short with brown eyes and pale skin.
The girl sat down next to her and said "Hello! My name is Katie - but my friends sometimes call me Atie. What's your name?" Jessie was surprised that someone had come up to her but she also felt relieved and joyful. "Hi" Jessie said quietly "I'm Jessie" Jessie could feel the anxiety building up inside her as she started fiddling her thumbs like she does when she is nervous. Jessie really hoped that Katie would like her and that they could be friends because she was getting tired of being alone. Jessie reached out her hand for a handshake and said "nice to meet you"

Katie watched quietly as the girl introduced herself."Hi. I'm Jessie" Jessie said softly. Katie smiled warmly. "Nice to meet you". Katie was glad to be getting to know another girl I get house and year. It is nice to meet you also. Do you like to read? Katie asked, hoping that they would be able to bond over books. Katie sensed that Jessie might be apprehensive about their meeting, so she wanted to try to ruminate any awkwardness with conversation.
She quickly glanced around the room. It was relatively noisy - as one would expect for a room filled with a bunch of eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and a few fifteen year olds, but Katie could easily tell that the majority of the noise was centralized around the Gryffindor table. I thought Gryffindor was the house of the brave - not the hose of the talkative. Do they perceive speaking their minds as brave? Personally, I think doing what you think I'd far more brave than just saying what you think. Katie thought silently to herself. She sprayed a pancake with her firm and deviated it in a single bite. It was a smaller pancake in her defense, and it was tasty. Who cared if she upheld the most perfect table manners, right? Add long add she didn't do what she did in the first day to that poor boy Henry Knight, she should be fine though.
Katie lightly twirled one of her thick, soft ponytails with her right index finger. It was a Thursday so they defiantly had class, but Katie couldn't remember which ones. She was pretty sure they had Portions today for certain, but she couldn't remember thyme others. What classes do we have today again? Katie asked Jessie lightly.

Jessie continued to fiddle with the food on her plate as Katie spoke. Jessie often finds herself avoiding eye contact with new people in fear that they would notice her eyes and think they are weird and also because it makes her nervous. She gave a smile to Katie as she asked her if she liked to read to which she replied "actually I don't read a lot these days but I guess I wouldn't mind giving it a try either." Jessie had never been a big reader, she'd much prefer being outside or playing with her brother on the beach.
She noticed Katie looking around the room and thought it was probably because she was finding the source of all the noise in the room. Obviously it was from the Gryffindor table. Jessie had always thought that Gryffindors were extremely stuck up and proud but then again, she didn't have enough experience to say so.

Katie smiled a politely as Jessie talked. Katie was often quote introverted, but she truly did enjoy having someone to talk to and connect with. "actually I don't read a lot these days but I guess I wouldn't mind giving it a try either." Jessie told her. Katie felt slightly sad at that. Katie hadn't gotten a chance to read a lot of fiction books growing up. Her prissy pure-blood parents insisted that they were useless, but Katie had had plenty of time to read and enjoy and learn from nonfiction books.
"Um I think we have potions, Muggle studies, Defence against the Dark Arts and Flying today." Jessie answered, in regards to Katie's question about their schedule for the day. Katie grimaced at hearing that they had flying she had always been too nervous to be fully comfortable with the broomsticks. Logically, she knew they had a bunch of safe guards and protections on them, but all Katie could think of them as were flying death traps.
"So, what's your favorite class here?...if you have one that is" Jessie asked. Katie smiled at this, thinking of Professor Boniface. Herbology for sure! Katie happily replied. What about you? Katie asked, returning the question to Jessie with a light smile.

First Introductions
"I like herbology too but my favorite would be Flying for sure!" Jessie replied. Flying was the closest thing to surfing and skateboarding and it reminded Jessie of back home, on the beach. Lately she hasn't gotten a lot of time to skate or surf because neither are permitted inside the school. Although she misses the activities she used to do, she really did enjoy flying and was pretty good at it too, some would even say a natural.
Jessie's mind began to wander as she looked over to where her brother was seated at the Hufflepuff table. Her smile disappeared noticing that he was seated all alone just as she was a while ago. She wished she could call Roman over to sit with her but one, that would be rude to Katie, and two, it is not allowed either.
Jessie tried to take her mind off it and thought to herself he'll be fine She turned back to Katie and asked "Do you have any siblings?" Katie listened intently to what Jessie was saying. Katie frowned slightly when Jessie asked her if she had any other siblings. Katie was an only child and her house had been quite lonely growing up. No, I don't have any siblings. Katie said sadly. What about you? she she asked Jessie, mildly curiously.
Katie got sucked back to a memory then. When she was nine years old, she had fell in with the idea of having a younger sister. She had begged her mother and father for months on end, hoping that they would break down and give into he demands. In the end though, her mother just snapped at her and told her one child was plenty enough to carry on the Palsorette line, and to stop asking. Katie had been so frightened at her mother's cold tone, she hadn't dated asked again since then. She smiled wistfully, thinking of how much she wished she had different parents.
Katie couldn't stand her parents. Her parents were prissy, rude, pure-blood supremacists and Katie hated that about them. Katie had initially believed ask if there lies about blood supremacy of course. What else could she do? Her parents had practically brainwashed her into their beliefs for all intensive purposes. But then, Katie had come to a startling realization. She'd been at Hogwarts, and she had been noticing all of the magic. She'd thought about how regardless of what her stuck up parents thought, that she did not believe the garbage they showed about blood purity. Magic was magic and it didn't matter who you're parents were fire how powerful you could be at it. Ever since then, Katie had outright refused to see muggle-borns and half-bloods as any less than pure-bloods. She had gone through a huge perspective shift with that. Katie still hasn't told her parents about her new found perspective of course. Katie already knew that her parents would absolutely hate it. Katie was postponing telling them as long as possible.
On a different note, so you prefer the summer, fall, winter or spring? Katie eagerly asked shifting the conversation away from family, I definitely perfect winter myself. The soft snow on the ground a that has freshly fallen is so surreal and magical. Well, not Hogwarts magical obviously, but you know what I mean. Katie said, starting to ramble slightly. Sometimes, when Katie was nervous, she would keep talking trip full the silence or something. Katie wasn't quite sure exactly why. What holidays do you celebrate around this time? Katie finally settled on asking.

"I have a twin brother, he is sitting right over there" Jessie replied pointing to the Hufflepuff table. She resisted looking over to her brother once more knowing that it won't do her any good. Jessie thought about Katies next question. Her family used to go to the mountains together during winter to ski and snowboard. They had gone almost every year and it was sort of a tradition in their family. She remembered how when she was younger, she used to push her brother down the mini mountain that was made for young children. Jessie smiled at the thought. Then she thought about the summer and how she and her brother would spend sunrise to sundown on the beach or going to the local ice cream shop then going over to the skatepark and helping each other learn new tricks. Jessie was very thankful for her family because she new that a lot of kids out there weren't as fortunate as her
"Winter and Summer are my favourites, it's hard for me to pick one because I love them both very much and they both have their own beauty" She smiled at Katie realizing that they had their love for winter in common. Katie felt herself relax more as she continued taking with Jessie. I celebrate the Winter Solstice and the Yuletide. Katie replied, smiling at the fond memories associated with this time of year. I don't celebrate Christmas though because it is a Christian holiday. While I respect everyone of all faiths, innocent witches and wizards were burned at the stake because Christians thought that we are evil. Katie said. Her great, great, great aunt had been one of those who had been burned at the stake. A lot of witches and wizards cited the flame freezing charm as why no real harm had been fine, but Katie knew that was them trying to rationalize the horrors that muggle Christianity had inflicted on them. Asadra, her great, great, great aunt, had her wand taken by the muggles before she could get away, and they had snapped it in front of her. They'd burned her that night... And well Katie didn't want to think about it. Katie just didn't feel like she could celebrate a holiday for a religion that feared her.

"Oh" Jessie replied to Katie "I didn't know that" Jessie could feel her cheeks get red and hot in embarrassment. Hearing what Katie had said made her sad because Christmas was always the most fun time for her and her family. Jessie looked at the ground and said "My family isn't really religious, we aren't Christian, but we just like to celebrate christmas because it makes us happy. And a lot of people in the muggle world celebrate Christmas, even if their not Christian. I didn't know about the world of magic anyways until I turned 11...my parents never told me."
Jessie felt bad for Katie. She didn't know that Christmas didn't have as happy of a back story in the Wizard World than it did in the muggle world.
