After Dinner

Robyn’s sleep schedule had gone completely haywire ever since she started work at Hogwarts. With her previous libraries there were shifts, specific closing hours. Hogwarts didn’t have that. The library was technically always open even though there was an imposed curfew. Two students in the past month had attempted to break into the restricted section after curfew, which had her staying to do extra rounds to try and end the trend before it started. She never quite understood why the restricted section was in the library with the rest of the books. There was also some part of her that was thrilled to now be the keeper of the restricted after so many years of gazing at it longly during her time at Hogwarts. Although, the interest in researching the subjects it held had lessened.

This weekend, she was trying to have one of rest. She had found herself brutally exhausted after making self imposed overtime. No one in the castle was asking her to do it, she was doing it to herself. While there was still an assistant librarian still on duty to monitor the library while she took an early night off for the weekend, something in her still wanted to turn around and double check on everything.

Her eyes that ached of an exhaustion that hung over her head that could not be refused. With a last glance back, we kept walking. The Head of Hufflepuff, Caradoc Browne, had recently opened his doors for her to stay in his spare room and while she initially didn’t want to impose having a place to escape the castle was impossible to resist. It forced her hand in having to put much more effort into going back to the school to check on the library and it was never quite worth it.

With a stifled yawn, she trudged on through the castle passing tired hellos to students that noted her presence which was rarely seen outside of the library. There was nothing that could stop her from going home. Or so she thought.

It was late, time to pack it in and head out. He picked the small hall to read in that evening, it was a favorite spot for him back when he was a young booger, especially during cold months. It had a big hearth, for one, which was great, but you also got to see all the people go by. Just being in the Hufflepuff common room was too restrictive-- he had friends in every house! Well, none of his old friends were in the school anymore. It seemed like every face had changed, not even the old teachers had stuck around.

Not like he wouldn't find friends eventually anyway. He always found someone. That day, however, he was finishing up the last bit of reading on his current obsession-- Big Foot's Last Stand. A riveting read. He was glad the Hogwarts library was so big, there were still books in it that he hadn't read yet. He borrowed a few of them, expecting the low traffic of the first week to continue for the most part.

Closing the cover and looking around with a satisfied grin, he brightened up like a prairie dog when his eye caught the librarian herself. It was perfect! It was not every day the exact person he needed was right in front of him. He'd be crazy not to get up and talk to her. Jogging to catch up, he called out.

"What's up! Robyn!" He gave her a toothy grin. "Thissis nuts, I just finished reading my book, like, 5 seconds ago."

He held the book out to her, as if foisting the book back into her care was a favor he was doing for her.

"Have you read it? Whadaya think about it?" His questions came one after the other without a pause. "If you haven't, man, you really should. Baller stuff, really wild."

Being Flabberghasted
@Kelsey Brumby
She had almost escaped. She was so close to being home free! Her feet had stopped moving before her brain had fully processed that someone had even called her name. Her first name at that. It couldn't be a student, unless they were quite bold. The voice was unfamiliar and she found her head swiveling around the small hall to find who it was, which wasn't hard being that most of the adults were taller than the school population. Her eyes narrowed when they zeroed in on the target enthusiastically walking towards her. The new school nurse.

They had briefly met, said their hello's when he joined the team but nothing quite more than that. She was grateful for his existence, merely for the fact that she was no longer the newest staff member and now he could fall under the scrutinous eyes of the student population as she had been subjected to. He approached her, talking about a book he had just finished as he was Belle and she was the Beast that would be enraptured with every word that would come from him. Her body didn't even turn to face him, just her head. She glanced down at the book, one that she surprisingly didn't really recognize before looking up at him. "And good evening to you, Mr. Brumby." She hoped even using his last name would come off as cold and harsh enough for him to get the message that she wasn't in a talking mood.

With a sigh, she resigned to turn to face him fully due to the requirements of social etiquette that told her to do so. "No I have not read it, I know it may come as a surprise that librarians don't read every book that passes through their hands. I think I'll pass on..." Another glance down at the book, "Big Foot's Last Stand? Shouldn't you be reading more to do about... healing or something. Maybe research on the curse that has spread through the school like a rampant wildfire?" Obviously in the back of her mind she knew that just because he was a nurse she shouldn't be spending the whole time researching anything medical, but in a sleep-deprived, cranky state. She would criticize him as much as she wanted if it got him to leave her alone.

Instead of taking the book from his hands, she kinda just stared at him. He squinted his eyes and slowly moved the book into her arms. If she resisted taking it, he would continue nudging it. It was her book!

She called him Mr. Brumby, something he was having to get used to again now that he was in a new workplace. Everyone at his last job either called him Kels, or any number of other nicknames. Like 'annoying git' or 'barmy muppet'. Mr. Brumby sounded so crazy formal, he hoped she wasn't about to insist on that. "Call me Kels, or anythin' else. Even just Brumby."

Next, she questioned his choice to focus on Bigfoot, though he doubted even she believed what she was saying. "What kind of librarian don't want people to follow their curiosity? You tryin' a make me regret reading this? This great book?" He shook his head and puckered his lip, looking like a disappointed older brother even though he was slightly shorter than her. "If yer sayin' that title don't make make ya wanna see what it's about, yer lyin' to my got-dang face."

He hadn't heard anything about a curse spreading through the school yet. In fact, the hospital wing had been quieter than he had expected. Maybe she was just pulling his leg.

"Read any good books about books lately?" Kels affected a goofy voice, drawing attention to the absurdity of her question, then dropped it to go back to a friendly, chipper tone. "Yer flippin' eyebags are big purple pillows, have you been doing anything besides reading? HEY, fun fact-- did you know you can put used teabags on 'em, like after yer done drinking? After some nice tea in the evening, y'know. Put 'em on your face."

He looked at her expectantly, a bit too awake and a bit too happy.

Contemplating Murder
@Kelsey Brumby
Her mouth couldn't help but drop open a bit at the pure audacity of the man in front of her, before closing it again and tightening her jaw. She just... stared at the book that was now shoved into her arms. "Why... why are you giving this to me? I don't want to read it." Her arms moved to shuffle it into her hands where she thumbed through the book out of habit, before she caught the front page that was on every single library book. "Sorry... is this your way of turning it in? Just handing it off to the librarian when she's obviously off the clock?" Her eyes narrowed into a vicious glare, holding it up as if it was a piece of evidence in a crime.

With a huff she dropped the book to her side when he criticized her apparent discouraging statement of following his curiosity. Perhaps he should be following his curiosity far, far away from her. "The only thing I'm trying to do, at this point, is figure out what the hell you think the process for returning a book is. You realize there are assistant librarians? For you to walk to the library yourself and turn it into them." Forgetting the students were still milling about, she let the mild curse spill off her tongue as her anger began to take control of her.

It wasn't exactly a great quality of Veelas, their anger issues. They were a manifestation of emotion that she tried to suppress above all others. She was thankful for the fact that due to the wizard blood in her veins she never had to worry about turning into what they did when they got angry. It still meant that she had to keep her anger in check when it came up, for fear of lashing out and doing something idiotic.

It seemed like Kels was trying to push her over the limit with his last statement. The book was quickly shoved back into his chest, whether or not he caught it was up to him. Her gaze was furious, burning, like hell could be reached right through her eyes if one were to step through her pupils. " For your information I was trying to head home until you just had to stop me to turn in a book on your own time rather than mine. What kind of nurse are you, preventing people from getting the care they need like sleep? Maybe next time you should mind your own business Kels, and leave someone obviously done for the night alone." Venom had been injected into the words and shot at him. The words crisp and sharp, the message obvious.

Leave me alone.

Oops, he was getting scolded. When he thought about it, she was probably leaving the castle after clocking out. Made sense, it was late... though how late, he couldn't say. He had prescribed himself a long evening break to de-stress after all the mind numbing paperwork he was doing. It was the start of the weekend, and there were no serious cases he needed to keep an eye on. He had a mind to ask around about the curse she mentioned, but now he was wondering if anyone would be awake.

"Oh..." He clearly telegraphed his disappointment when she shoved it back at him, taking the book and hugging it to his chest. Was she... perhaps... a bummer?

His naturally glued on smile became confused as she started to rail against him, bringing her librarian wrath down on him. She looked cranky, her sleep deprivation had to have been even worse than he thought. She was quite pale, too, and... something familiar...

"Waitta second!" Kels' face turned to shock, mouth agape. "Wow, wait, wait... Finley, right? Like Felix Finley? Like.. like your his little sister!"

Back to square one again, the same joyful excitement from the start of their conversation resprouted as though it had never been wilting. "Look at you! You're still dying your hair! You must really hate being blond!"

Wondering if She Should Quit
@Kelsey Brumby
After her rant, she had started to turn to walk away from him. He had seemed to get the message whether or not he wanted to. Robyn could finally breathe and go home. But, that would've been too easy wouldn't it? At his humble request, she did indeed wait a second. And how she would regret that. Her heart sank the second the words left his mouth. Brumby. How could she forget a last name like that? Kelsey Brumby, one of her brother's old friends from Hogwarts. Someone that knew her since she was a tiny first year. Someone that had her biggest secret latched within his hands and he didn't know it, especially with how he dropped it right in front of everyone that she indeed was not a natural ginger.

Her anger had flipped, not about the book anymore but now about something far more personal. She wasn't about to have all her work undone by a bumbling Hufflepuff that she thought she had shaken off after he graduated Hogwarts. She stomped back towards him and grabbed him by his shirt, yanking him away from the main part of the Small Hall. Away from tiny eyes and ears that were looking to grasp on whatever gossip floated through the halls. "Are you daft? Do you not remember the reason I did it in the first place? And here you are, just shouting it out in the hall. Hey, you think if maybe I'm still doing it after I don't know... 14 something years maybe I'm still trying to keep a secret? No. You're always in it for the joke aren't you." She stepped away from him, her hand finally releasing his shirt with a look of disgust on her face. "No one at this school knows, well, except for... one student. But I would appreciate it if you didn't yell about it in front of everyone." There was a sadness, a pleading, a begging, tone to her voice and in her eyes.

This admittedly put her in a compromised position that she would have never wanted to come from interacting with one of her old school mates. She had only told one girl, a Lydia Cooper who had come to her in search of information about Veelas and she couldn't help but give in and help her talk about it on a more personal level. Kelsey had always been friends with her brother, not her. So it would make sense that looking out her her well-being was not something on his to-do list. She had distanced from her brother greatly ever since second year to get away from people just like Felix, just like Kelsey. How the world hated her, bringing him back into her life.

It was terrifying. In a moment, after Robyn had turned her back for a moment, the face that turned back around was one of malice. She really hated being a blonde. She stomped over to him, pulling him by the shirt like so many teachers and librarians before her. He'd not fight, whatever it was seemed important, though he was increasingly starting to worry that he was about to get a beat down. Hadn't she been a real shy, quiet girl? He had only ever seen her that mad one time before-- that's what had made him remember. Felix had been joking about her hair change, and she started that whole 'none of your business' thing. Any time beyond that, she had been practically invisible. He would hear people all the time in awe of the fact that Felix had a sister at all.

Once they had turned a corner, the real scolding began. He should have known, keeping a secret... she had some issues, that was for sure. He had never been given rules though, he had never been taught. He was just supposed to know, or else he was daft. An emotional reaction, barbed and illogical. Kels shook his head, shrugging deeply with eyebrows aloft in disbelief.

"I dunno. Coulda been somethin' else. Coulda jus' matched your complexion better, y'know?" He could come up with more reasons too, infinite reasons. "It suits you good."

At least after that she actually asked him. He figured he had plopped himself into some hot water with her, through no effort on his part. It figured, he had spent 30 years meeting new people and they always found something about him they didn't like. It didn't change the fact that he had no intention of making her work situation more hostile.

"Don't worry about it. Think of it like doctor-patient confidentiality." He zipped his mouth and threw away the key, in mime. Where's the key? Gone forever! "Here, let's trade secrets. I once found pieces of a car like eight miles into the Fens. Heavy stuff. How did it get there? Anyway, that's where I stashed my magazines."

Kels smiled, as if expecting her to be impressed. "Medical magazines. Nothing interesting, I swear."

Feeling Like She Should Write Felix an Owl
@Kelsey Brumby
Robyn really couldn't fault him for not remembering everything, it was almost 15 years later. It was probably just a small blip in a memory for him, unlike her where it was the standout memory from her second year. Anytime she thought about second year, she thought about that day in the Great Hall the first time that she had used the hair coloring charm. Her brother scoffed, shouldered some of his buddies. That was the last time she ate with them at lunch. Her brother, usually kind and accommodating through her childhood, thought this was a step that was over dramatic in her escape from what their mother pressured them to be. After that she took the seat at the end of the table, closest to the door, closest to an escape. It was amazing how much could change in all of those years, and how much could stay the same. In the moment with Kelsey she felt like she was a second year again, small and insignificant despite her being taller than him. It wasn't a feeling she enjoyed, one that she hadn't felt in awhile.

Despite her anger at him, she couldn't help but stifle a laugh when he said the red fitted her well. Whether or not it was a result of him trying to recover and possibly a false statement, she chose to believe he meant it. "Matches the temper too, hm?" A strained joke back to try and diffuse whatever tension laid between them, though she wasn't too sure if he was feeling the tension too by his attitude. Sleep deprivation wasn't a good look on her, that was for sure. She had blown up on him, for what? To draw more attention to the librarian and new nurse fighting? As if the kids, with all they had gone through, needed to think the staff that was supposed to protect them were fighting.

His attempt at diffusing the tension was an odd tactic, a secret of where he stashed magazines. "Oh, medical of course. Because why would you keep those at home with you?" She rolled her eyes, taking the book that he had shoved into her arms earlier, it was truly the least she could do. "Don't worry about this, just... next time take the walk to the library. After all, how will you find more information about the Sasquatch Rebellion?" She took a couple steps away from him for the last time, determined to head out for some good rest. A simple goodbye call shouted out behind her. "I'll see you around... Brumbro."

Well, she seemed to lighten up at least. He did feel a bit bad for keeping her from getting rest, but he knew he wasn't accountable for her not sleeping enough during the week, or not knowing more about her. Quick to judge, that one. Was it really a racial trait, like she said? He had done plenty of personal research on Half-Veela, not to mention endless questioning of and occasional experiments on Felix. Perhaps she was a bit too preoccupied about how much control it had over her. He'd raise a few points on the biological aspects that were nagging her, but he didn't want to start mansplaining her species right after she said she was exhausted. He at least had that much restraint.

What mattered was that she could be reasonable. Too many people were stubborn and proud. When she clapped back with a comical retort, Kels laughed out loud, like maybe too loud.

"Okie dokie, will do, marm." Kels gave her a salute, fully intending to take his books to the library now that the rule had been established.

As she left, she added one last poke-- the name Felix and his group used to call him! He hadn't heard the nickname in a while, it felt almost weird since he had only very recently returned to the spires of Hogwarts. It felt like coming back to a second home... he was glad that not everything had changed. He should write a letter to Felix!
