Haley had finally received the long awaited letter from her grandmother this morning. She would have loved to open it directly during breakfast, but she held back. She wanted to read it in peace and quiet and above all unobserved. She quickly shoved her last slice into her mouth and said goodbye to her friends without words, since her mouth was still full, and hurried away.

Since it was Saturday, she had no further obligations and no time pressure. So she went straight to the library, which was completely empty at that time. "So much the better." Haley thought to herself and went into one of the back corners and sat down on an armchair that stood around a small round table.

She took the letter and held it in her hands for a moment and took a few deep breaths, not knowing what to expect, and felt a little panic rising in her. But before she could change her mind, she opened the letter and took out the perchament sheet. She immediately recognized her grandmother's beautiful writing and began to read:
"My dear Haley,

I am glad that you have settled in so well at Hogwarts and that you are happy that you ended up in Gryffindor after all. But let me assure you that not all Slytherins are as terrible as the ones you have met so far.

I sent you some cookies with this letter, I hope you like them, but I'd like to respond to your letter to me as well.I'm afraid you won't read what you hoped for, but it's not my responsibility to answer these questions, as much as I would like to.

I know that you would like to know more about your family history, which I think is the right thing to do, but the answers you are looking for you have to look for in your parents, especially in your mother.

Let me tell you that me and your grandfather and the rest of the family have made many mistakes in the past, which is also the reason for this long distance, but we regret this time very much and are very happy to have you as part of our family again.

I hope you are not disappointed with my letter and that I will read from you again soon.

With love,

Cecilia Rose"
Haley read the letter twice before she put it back in the envelope. She didn't know what to feel yet, but soon the sadness came up in her. "Damn it. Why can't anyone just tell the truth" she cursed loudly. She flinched for a moment, but then she realized again that she was alone and so she didn't care anymore.

She noticed how slowly warm tears rolled down her cheek but quickly wiped them away and leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes for a moment.

Not knowing what else to do for the rest of the day Crystal walks into the library looking for an empty seat. Which was pretty easy considering the library was pretty much empty to begin with except for a few students scattered around here and there. The library was bigger than she previously anticipated There were books shelf's that were just filled with hundreds and hundreds of books along with some few reference books scattered on some tables.

After looking around in astonishment of this great library for a few seconds she spots a girl sitting alone at a small round table at one of the back corners of the library looking like she could use someone to talk to. Crystal nervously walks over to where the girl in sitting holding a book in her hands. She hasn't made friends by this point and realized this would be a good chance to try and make one. Once Crystal gets to the table she stops right in front of where the girl is sitting. Crystal places her book on the table in front of the open seat.

Is it okay if I sit here?, Crystal asks in a somewhat nervous tone not knowing if she'll say yes or not

Haley was startled briefly when she suddenly heard a voice. Her eyes shot up and there she saw a girl standing , looking at her slightly nervously. She could tell that she was from Slytherin and hoped very much that this would not be an unpleasant beginning. Still slightly confused, Haley only realized after a few seconds that she had asked her a question. "Huh?, Oh yes, yes, of course. The seat is free."

Hale briefly closed her eyes, took a few breaths and ran her back hand over her cheeks to remove the remaining tears. She hoped very much that the girl would not notice what situation Haley was in. She quickly put the letter in her bag, pulled her legs up on the chair and looked at the girl who was going to sit in the free chair.

She felt caught and did not want to appear rude when the girl noticed her look. She quickly smiled at her and looked back at her legs. She was not sure whether she should start a conversation. The two didn't know each other yet and maybe she came to the library to have her peace and quiet. Haley thought for a while but decided to say something. "Hi, I'm Haley." She smiled at her again.

I'm Crystal, she says while sitting down in the seat, positioning the book she was holding in front of here.

Crystal hasn't talked to anybody since she's gotten here so she just sits there silently as and hopes Haley will start the conversation because she is not very good at starting a conversation herself with someone she has just met. The sounds of the few people talking fill the part of the library she is sitting in and Crystal starts to get a little anxious. She starts to wonder how people can start conversation when they barely know each other in the first place. Even when she first met her friends back in Kingwood she didn't say anything until someone else did first because she was scared that she embarrassing herself or something like that, but she knows she has to say something soon. Crystal leans back into her chair not knowing what to do or say. She quietly sits there more trying to find a way she could possibly starts a conversation with this stranger that she only met a few minutes ago. After thinking about how to get a conversion started she leans forward in her chair.

So what are you doing in here? , Crystal asks Haley

Since Haley didn't expect a reaction, she was all the more surprised when the girl answered her. So Crystal was her name. She thinks it is beautiful and had to think about her childhood and how her friends always talked about names and name changes. A little lost in this memory, a smile spread across her face.

Haley really likes to meet very new people, but she wasn't sure if Crystal just answered out of politeness and wanted to be left alone. She didn't want to end in a fight again and thought about it for a while. But before she could make her decision, a question brought her back to reality.

"Oh, that came as a surprise," Haley thought. "Oh, well, I was just taking advantage of the calm here to read a letter I received this morning." She instantly felt the unpleasant sensation in the pit of her stomach, but didn't want to let to know anybody. She quickly smiled at Crystal, "And you?"

Haley moved again in her chair and sat down so that she looked at Crystal. She was looking forward to some distraction, but actually she also knew that she had to deal with the letter and especially that she had to answer her grandmother.

I am so sorry for my late reply!

"Honestly, I just couldn't think of anything else to do so I came here", Crystal replied in a whisper trying not ruin the libraries quiet atmosphere.

Crystal sat forward in chair looking at her book she brought with not knowing what else to say at the moment. Crystal looked around for a few seconds at the other tables to see what everybody else was doing. Most of the tables were still empty but the ones that had students were still just sitting there talking with each. A few other students were leaving or entering the library from what she could tell with the door being as on the opposite end of the library where she was sitting. When Crystal turned back around to Haley she thought Haley looked a little off but she didn't want to jump to any conclusions.

"Is everything okay", Crystal asked Haley in a somewhat worried tone but tried not to sound like it still unaware if something was wrong in the first place.

Crystal then sat there waiting for any kind answer looking down at her book wouod read a few sentences then look back up at Haley again not knowing if or when an answer to her question would arise.

It's okay

The situation between the two still seemed a bit strange to Haley, she wasn't sure if Crystal wanted to talk to her or not. When she got her book, Haley decided not to say anything more, after all she didn't want to be rude. Embarrassed, she looked at her hands and started playing with a ring she was wearing. She picked it up between two fingers and took it off and on again and with every repetition her thoughts started to remember the letter. Her inner conflict was now fully occupying her again and she still didn't know what to do.

Suddenly she was torn from her thoughts and looked slightly startled at Crystal's face. Haley suddenly noticed that tears had gathered in her eyes again and blinked them away quickly. She hoped very much that she hadn't noticed, but she also knew that even a blind person should have seen this. Also had Crystal just asked her if everything was okay, of course she noticed.

Haley struggled with herself, she wanted someone to talk to but they hardly knew each other and she didn't want to annoy anyone with her unimportant problems. It seemed to her as if she had spent an hour deciding how to answer, but in reality she answered after a few short seconds.

"Um," Haley cleared her throat, "to be honest, no." She now looked directly into Crystal's eyes, but just as quickly back at her hands. She was very ashamed in this situation "But it's no big deal, I don't want to bother you with my problems." She shrugged her shoulder to show that it was no longer important. Then she raised her head and nodded in the direction of the book Crystal was reading "and even less do I want to disturb you while reading." Haley smiled at her, but she was afraid that it was obvious to her how much it tormented her.

“It's not a problem, I can read this book anytime”, Crystal replies to Haley

Crystal closes the book and places it on the floor next to where she is sitting. The book makes a small thud when it hits the wood floor. After putting it down Crystal realized she forgot to mark the page she was on but she didn’t really care about that right now. She could always find the page she was on later. Crystal then quickly and attentively sits up in her chair not paying attention to anything else in the room hoping Haley would talk to her if anything was wrong. Crystal knew she wasn't the best at casual conversions but if something she does know how to do well it’s listening to people's problems. If they wanted to talk about them of course. Crystal knows in some cases people don’t wanna talk about things that are bothering them and if they want to that's fine as well.

While waiting for an answer the only sounds Crystal can hear and people at other tables still having their conversations, the occasional turn of book pages and the library doors opening and closing but she doesn’t let those things break her concentration this time.

Haley was still a little unsure about the whole situation, but after a moment's thought, she decided that she would talk to Crystal about it. What was going to happen? After all, she had offered to listen to Haley and Haley herself had offered to let strangers share their problems with her often enough and they had always done so. So why not just her for once then?

"So, to keep it short," Haley began quietly, looking glumly at Crystal. "So basically, I don't know anything about my own family history." She visibly rolled her eyes and clenched her hands. By now the sadness had turned to anger and for a brief moment Haley was surprised at herself and quickly relaxed her hands again. "I've really been trying to find out something for a long time, but my mother doesn't want to talk to me about this subject and my grandmother refers to my mother." She laughed scornfully and held the letter up.

At that moment, so much anger came up inside her that tears were already gathering in her eyes. She crumpled the letter and threw it into her bag. As she did so, she spoke angrily more to nothing than to Crystal "It can't be that damn hard." For a moment Haley stared angrily at a spot on the floor, it was quiet and she assumed Crystal knew Haley needed to calm down for a moment. She took a few deep breaths in and out and began to relax a little again.

"I'm sorry, I don't normally act this, well aggressive, but I'm so incredibly annoyed by this. How can it be that you yourself don't know anything about your own family history?" She knew not to expect an answer, knowing well that there was no answer.

"For ages I've been trying to find out something and the only thing I've been told is," she stopped and took the crumpled letter out of her bag and read from it:

"I know that you would like to know more about your family history, which I think is the right thing to do, but the answers you are looking for you have to look for in your parents, especially in your mother.

Let me tell you that me and your grandfather and the rest of the family have made many mistakes in the past, which is also the reason for this long distance, but we regret this time very much and are very happy to have you as part of our family again."

Again she rolled her eyes in annoyance, "Oh, wow, thanks for the info. I ALREADY KNEW THAT." The last part she spoke was too loud and she winced. She hated it when so much anger welled up inside her. She always felt like she was having a really hard time getting out of it, and the anger kept spiraling higher.

Haley let herself fall backwards in the chair, relaxing her entire body. She let out a short loud gasp and closed her eyes. Still with her eyes closed she now spoke to Crystal again "I'm really incredibly sorry, I don't even want to know what you must think of me now."

Crystal sits back in her chair wondering how someone can absolutely not know about their family history and why nobody would talk about it. Why Crystal herself doesn't really doesn't know everything about her own family history she at least knows some of what happened. Crystal has thought about asking her own parents about their family history but then realizing she really doesn't care that much about it. It’s not that she doesn’t care, it's more she doesn't care about the subject of the question. If she does find one she’s sure her parents will tell her about whatever she asks about.

“It’s okay, It must be hard not knowing about your own family history”, Crystal replies to Haley

After Haley read her letter aloud Crystal saw Haley's obvious annoyance but didn’t care because she knew she would be annoyed if she didn’t know about her family history. Crystal looks around the library and sees a few other students now staring at the table probably wondering what was going on. Crystal looks back in the direction of Haley who was relaxing in her chair.

“Really it's okay, I would be upset too if my family was keeping a secret or something like that from me too”.
