London, King's Cross Station, Platform 9 3/4 | September 1st

This was it, the day Calypso Starling would finally go to Hogwarts! She had been waiting her whole life for this, imagining what the school looked like, what house she'd be sorted into, who she'd meet and what she'd learn. And now it was actually happening!

The Starlings arrived at King's Cross, all five of them. Calypso herself, her two parents, the eccentric and slightly senile Great Aunt Meribel, and Calypso's quidditch-loving little sister, Maud. There were a few delays when they got out of the taxi, one being an accident with a luggage trolly and the other being the need to find a bathroom for Maud. But eventually, they reached the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. Of course, Calypso had read about the school and how students got there, but she was still a bit nervous about executing the whole endeavor. They went, in a pair and a trio, through the brick barrier.

The platform was chaos. Families hugging goodbye to their students, old friends greeting one another, small children shouting and running about. And, of course, the gleaming scarlet steam engine that was the Hogwarts Express. Needless to say, Calypso was overwhelmed. She hugged each of her family members in turn, and was surprised when little Maud burst into tears (her sister had an aversion to crying in front of people). Before she knew it, she was boarding the train alone, lugging her trunk behind her. Calypso had had a few friends back home, but two were muggles and therefore knew nothing of magic or Hogwarts, and the other had gone to study abroad at Beauxbatons. She had, however, met a new friend, Ashely Coulson, at Flourish and Blotts the day she did her school shopping. Calypso walked up the steps into the train, and was greeted by a plush interior. She walked down the length of the train, keeping an eye out for Ashley. About halfway down the train, she spotted her friend sitting alone in a compartment. Ashley was looking around, as if searching for something. When she caught sight of Calypso, a look of recognition crossed her face, and she smiled and beckoned Calypso into the compartment.

insane by those who could not hear the music."

The day had arrived! Ashley was so excited and nervous that she couldn't think straight. She stared up at the train that would take me to where she belonged. Her family had come to see her off, even her little sister Sybil, who was (as usual) gabbing her head off. Ashley collected her thoughts enough to say goodbye. Her mother, who despised both goodbyes and crying, just straightened Ashleys scarf and and said briskly "I love you, Ash. Write often, okay?" Ashley nodded and hugged her mother tightly. Her dad was next. His eyes were tearing up no matter how hard he tried to hide it. "Have fun, honey," he whispered into her ear as he hugged her. Ashley nodded again. Great. Now she was crying. Finally, Sybil tugged on the hem of her shirt. "Bye-Bye!" Sybil chirped cheerfully. Ashley smiled and picked her up. "Bye-bye,"Ashley answered. And with that, she took her bags and boarded the train. She looked for her friend Calypso Starling that she had met yesterday at Flourish and Blotts, but couldn't find her. So she sat in an empty compartment and fiddled her fingers nervously. A few minutes later, she spotted Calypso boarding the train from her window. Smiling, Ashley beckoned her over. "Hello!" She said. "Hi!" Calypso answered, "Are you excited?" "
Yes," Ashley replied. Suddenly, the girls started laughing. "I just can't believe that I am actually going to Hogwarts!" She grinned. "I know!" Calypso grinned too. They sat quietly for a while, soaking everything in. The first years, who, like Ashley and Calypso, were fidgeting with nerves. The older students, chatting with ease, some of which carried a sense of superiority as they walked past the first years. The clicks and clacks and whistles of the train and the old woman selling magical sweets that Ashley had never heard of before. "Chocolate frogs?" the woman asked as she made her way over to the two girls. "Sure!" they answered. After paying the woman, they opened the foil-wrapped chocolate. To Ashley's surprise, hers jumped straight out of it's wrapper and began hopping around the small compartment. She shrieked and jumped up. Calypso smiled. 'Oh, yes. They move," she said. They laughed again. Hogwarts was going to be great.

Annie woke up in a state of extreme nervousness, but also excitement. It was September 1st. She was going to Hogwarts! She slowly got out of bed and got ready, all the while muttering to her jittery self, 'calm down. It's okay. Calm down! It's okay.' She looked in the mirror. Annie scrunched up her nose and a blue streak appeared in her hair. Being a metamorphmagus, Annie was able to change her appearance in minor ways, but she wasn't able to completely control it. She nodded in satisfaction.
Annie walked down the stairs. She could smell the sweet scent of her favorite breakfast, pancakes with vegan chocolate chips, wafting up from the kitchen where her mother, father, older sister Luella (starting her fifth year at Hogwarts) and her younger brother Adam were waiting for her.
"Annie!" Her father exclaimed. "We're so proud of you! Are you excited?"
Annie replied with a little squeak. Luella laughed. "It's just the first week or so that's scary."
Two hours later, Annie and her family stood at King's Cross.
"Are you SURE we aren't going to run into the wall?" Annie whispered to Luella. She laughed. "Sure I'm sure. Everyone does it, that's how you get onto the platform."
Annie nodded. This was as far as she had ever gone to see Luella off previous years. She was sorta kinda afraid of the barrier. (But she would never admit it!)
Her mother put her hand on Annie's shoulder and Adam tucked his small hand into her's. Annie closed her eyes and ran forward, pushing her trolly in front of her.
She was on Platform 9 3/4! She saw the Hogwarts Express, and the bustle of students, pets and parents. Her heart gave a leap. The whistle sounded and her family rushed her forward and she stepped onto the train behind Luella. Luella took her hand and they set off to find a seat.
"I see some of my friends in that compartment over there. Will you be okay on your own?"
"Yeah. See you later." Annie continued to walk along the train by herself. She came to a compartment where two girls sat eating chocolate frogs. When they saw her looking, one of the girls opened the door and said,"hi. Do you want to sit with us?" Annie nodded and sat down.
"I'm Ashley Coulson. This is Calypso Starling. "
"Hi." Annie smiled. "I'm Suzanne Byrd. Everyone calls me Annie."

Ashley looked up at the new girl. Annie. She seemed nice. Ashley smiled.
"Hi," she said, "I'm Ashley Coulson. You can call me Ash, if you'd like." She had been called Ash ever since she was little. It used to bother Ashley when people called her Ash, but she kind of liked it now.
She wasn't usually good at making friends (many found her too serious and sarcastic), but here she was on the Hogwarts Express, sitting with two new people and having fun. She sighed happily and stared out the window. The English Countryside was beautiful. The girls didn't talk much, but they didn't really need to. At this moment, they were heading towards their future. Life as they new it was almost as good as over. Instead of feeling scared or sad, this made Ashley feel peaceful. She pulled out her notebook and began writing. Nothing in particular, just thoughts and words. Everything that came to mind. Real writing can't be forced. It has to come unexpectedly, it has to stop you in your tracks and make you grab for your paper and pen. It has to fill you up and empty you out at the same time. It has to be breathtaking. Ashley's breath was already taken, and she wasn't even at Hogwarts yet. She looked over at Annie and Calypso. They smiled at each other. Ashley ducked her head again and let inspiration imprint itself on the page.
