Maison had never eaten so much food in his life.
The feast was well underway and each of the four banquet tables was covered in a variety of exquisite dishes. Maison had already stuffed himself full of roasted chicken and lamb chops and sausages, and was now on his second helping of potatoes and carrots. Every bite so far had been absolutely glorious.
The conversations with his new housemates had been just as fulfilling. He’d introduced himself to at least a dozen of them already – basically anyone who was within earshot – and couldn’t wait to meet the rest later on in the Gryffindor common room. He and the other first years bonded particularly well over their shared amazement at the Sorting Hat experience. Maison still couldn’t get over the fact that a raggedy old hat was able to read his mind and determine that he should be in Gryffindor, though he wasn’t terribly pleased about part where the hat had outed him as being a rule-breaker, and kept shooting nervous glances towards the staff table, worried that his soon-to-be Professors had overheard the hat's claim.
Just when Maison was sure that he was completely full, a vast selection of desserts had appeared on the table before him, to which he just stared in amazement. He didn’t even know where to begin. There was an assortment of pies, tarts, and puddings. There was also fruit and jam doughnuts and even ice cream.
Ice cream.
Maison immediately harked back to the earlier train ride where his new friend of sorts, Ross – a second year Hufflepuff – had told him that wizarding world ice cream tasted markedly different from muggle ice cream. Eager to test this claim, Maison immediately dove into a dish of vanilla ice cream. While he was aware that Ross' claim had been in reference to the ice cream cone shop in Diagon Alley, this was still heavenly, though it wasn't like he had much to base it off of. Sweets had always been a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of treat for the Pritchard children.
He couldn’t stop thinking about Ross as he finished off his ice cream and moved onto some treacle tart. Ross was the reason Maison had really wanted to be in Hufflepuff. The sorting hat had nearly placed him there, however it changed its mind at the last second, deciding that Maison was a better fit for the lion house. While he certainly didn’t object to the hat’s decision – his housemates were all really cool, after all – his heart sank into his stomach a bit at the thought of not being able to reconnect with Ross and see more of his spells (or get candy, for that matter). He had to do something about it.
Without a word to his housemates, Maison swiveled around in his seat and stood up from the Gryffindor table. Frankly, he was not even sure he was allowed to leave his table. It certainly wasn’t customary, anyway, as nobody else seemed to be leaving their house tables, but finding his train friend was far more important than doing what was customary. He couldn't wait to tell Ross about everything - the boat ride, the sorting, the feast, his new housemates. It had been such a whirlwind of an evening and so much had happened since the two boys parted ways after the train.
Maison eyed the table of students dressed in yellow-accented robes. It didn’t take long for him to spot Ross – the glasses gave him away – and after a quick glance towards the staff table to ensure that he wasn’t being watched, Maison darted towards the Hufflepuff table and approached Ross.
“Ross! It’s me, Maison!” He exclaimed. The sugar from his dessert was clearly beginning to settle in; Maison could hardly keep still as he spoke. “Did ya see me? Did ya see the sorting? I’m in Gryffindor! The lion house!”

The room was more welcoming than it had been the prior year, which was to be expected considering he had not the faintest idea of what was happening in his first year. Nobody had even bothered to give him a heads up about floating candles or talking hats. He had to figure it all out himself. This year he was allowed to simply take a seat and make himself comfortable, which was a considerably nicer change of pace than having to wait his turn to get his mind read by a old brown hat.
He recalled the year prior when he sat down at the table how sweaty his palms were and how much he simply desired to exit the building as quickly as he came. It had been overwhelming, but within the last year the amount of confidence he had gained just from meeting new people had been staggering. Immediately when he sat down at the table, he had felt like he was home once more. It was nearly as if going to the small little bakery for summer was the trip and coming back to Hogwarts was heading back home.
Though Ross had dreaded having to watch the long line of first years before digging into the feast, he kept paying attention for one singular student: Maison. He was lucky to have his own outstanding detective skills- being remembering his last name when he introduced himself- or else he would have been on the edge of his seat for every letter before P. He truly was friendly enough to be a Hufflepuff. Honestly, Ross thought he fit the bill decently well- well enough to at least get along with Willow.
As each first year was called up, he followed along with the upper classmen's cheers whenever a Hufflepuff was declared and their slight silence when another house was chosen. It was easy to get caught up in the whole mob mentality to the point it felt as if time flew faster. It was better than just staring at an empty plate, and he was rather interested in meeting the first years this year. If they were all as intriguing as Maison, he had a feeling he would have no problem whatsoever getting along with them. Still, he could not help but feel his heart race faster and faster until finally he heard it.
Pritchard, Maison
His eyes lit up at the name, finally grateful for the dead silence of a room of children. He attempted to listen close, but all that was going through his mind was what house would he end up in. Seconds felt as if they were hours until suddenly...
GRYFFINDOR!
He threw his fist up into the air, erupting into cheers. He was so caught up in the moment, he hardly noticed the judgmental stares from his peers. He clapped louder than he had for any of the prior students, so when the cheering died down all he could do was look at his hands. "ouch..." he mumbled at his red hands, but a smile remained on his face.
He watched as he made his way over to Gryffindor, and proceeded to continue the process of cheering on students as he felt his stomach growl. He could not WAIT to finally get a good, magical meal again.
As the sorting ceremony came to a close, Ross hastily piled what he knew from experience was good onto his plate. Last year he left far too much room for dessert and felt sick the next day, so in order to avoid the temptation he filled his goblet with pumpkin juice (his favorite drink, of course) and roast beef with a side of bread. It was what he got last year, but SURELY he would be able to avoid the temptation for dessert this time, right?
About thirty minutes into making casual small talk with his table and munching away at his meal, he had not managed to avoid the dessert. He had shoved a part of a tart onto his plate and begun munching on it. He yawned. Luckily for him, none of his classmates seemed particularly interested in conversating as much as they were interesting in digging into their dessert; however, someone clearly felt otherwise.
“Ross! It’s me, Maison!” He heard a voice behind him explain.
Ross jumped, caught off guard once more by the boy. As he looked him up and down a large smile appeared on his face.
"I can't believe you're a lion! Are ya gonna play with fire or somethin? You aught to show me if you decide to pick that up! The hat took quite a bit o' time with you, are you alright? You gotta tell me if they got candy in your common room too- Hold up- are ya even supposed to BE here?" he shot several questions at him at once, some of his words feeling lazy yet excited as he spoke as he put less effort into pronouncing them and more into cramming as many questions in as he could.
He was excited for him and it was clear through his facial expressions. He had not met a singular bad Gryffindor yet- well, besides one but he refused to speak of her. THIS one was going to be a good one. Finally he could add to his close friends Gryffindor list.

It put his mind at ease to see Ross so delighted for him. Maison had worried that the other boy might be disappointed if he were sorted into another house; clearly, his fears had been misplaced. Ross’ warm, encouraging smile reminded Maison that although they wouldn’t be sharing a common living space, they could still be friends. The lion still had a lot to learn about the wizarding world and was hopeful that Ross might be able to teach him a thing or two.
“I dunno. Maybe? Do a lot of Gryffindors play with fire?” He recalled Ross mentioning one boy who did, but figured it was just an anomaly. “I guess it sounds cool! My dads would probably have my head if they ever found out about it. I’m not even allowed to use the stove unattended at home.” To be fair, Maison had been pretty careless around heat sources in the past. “But it’s not like they can stop me while I’m here. How exactly can you play with fire, then? Is it a magic thing?”
Perhaps this was not the question to be asking in the presence of so many people, but Maison was generally oblivious to that kind of thing. His newfound freedom had him curious to know all about the sorts of things he could do now that he wasn’t under the constant supervision of overbearing parents. Of course, it wasn’t as though he could do whatever he wanted. He was still under the supervision of prefects and teachers, but they were less terrifying somehow. At least for now.
There was a noticeable pinkish tint to his cheeks at the mention of the sorting. The hat had deliberated over Maison for quite some time, nearly sorting him into the badger house before changing its mind. While he had been hoping to end up in the same house as Ross, he was mildly relieved that he wouldn’t have to suffer through seven years of wearing yellow-accented clothing. It was arguably his least favorite color.
“Yeah… it almost put me in Hufflepuff, actually. Said I was kind and loyal and stuff.” Maison paused and glanced around to ensure that nobody was actively eavesdropping, and proceeded in a whisper, “But then it ended up deciding that I should be in Gryffindor, ‘cause apparently I've got a ‘disregard for the rules’. I can’t help it, though. Rules make it hard to have any sort of fun. You don’t reckon any of the teachers heard it, do you?” It would really dampen his chances at making a good first impression.
“Oh! Nevermind that," Maison dismissed Ross' question about whether he should be there. The answer was definitely no, and it would only be a matter of time before someone at his table noticed that he'd gone missing, but he had been much too excited to reconnect with his new friend. "I wanted to see you and tell you all about the sorting! It was so cool, Ross! A bit weird, yeah, but not many muggles can say that they've had their thoughts prodded by a hat, can they? And y'know, I almost didn't believe you when you said the portraits were sentient, but they really are! One of them greeted me on our way in. Also, what's with the candles? I didn't think candles could fly?"

Fire, Fire, Fire. Oh How Ross had far too many experiences with it. Lumos had backfired on him far too many times, to the point he had faint burn marks on his foot and arm. It was not as if he did not have experience. His parents worked in a bakery- he was bound to get a couple marks and burns through his childhood. Still, it was not as if he liked the sensation of being burned. In fact, he had quite a distaste for it. It was people like that Gryffindor he met that made him consistently wonder how someone could be so brave.
"I dunno, but you should try it! He had these rings, but you can do it magically- I'd suggest you don't tough. I'll have to show you it sometime! It's..." he glanced at his table mates "Sorta dangerous to do anythin like it in such a concentrated area.
Fire spread easily, but it was also relatively simple to put out. Still, he would never risk it when he was exhausted and in a large group of people. It was one thing to burn himself, worse to burn another. He had burned another girl a slight bit back, and he accidentally burned a boy a year ahead of him too. It got more and more embarrassing per mistake. That was why he practiced so much with lumos after all, it was the one he sucked at yet all the other kids the year prior excelled at. Perhaps he just concentrated too much.
"I'm sure ya got more traits than THAT. But er.. I doubt they heard anything."
Ross had been paying attention as much as he could, and even he did not catch onto the whole rule breaking part. The teachers heard this stuff every year, so he doubt they could even care. Still, he was shocked with it being possible the teachers knew about this behavior if he were Maison he would certainly not be breaking rules not even an hour into the school year. It brought him an ounce of anxiety, knowing that the boy he found himself getting so attached to could possibly land himself into some for of detention. On top of that, he did not wish to get wrapped into anything horrendous. A good mystery was completely legal for anything besides the culprit, after all.
As he dismissed the question, a look of uncertainty made its way onto his face. He really did not wish to be breaking the rules; however, he would be lying to say he did not wish to talk to Maison. He was curious about who he was going to be at Hogwarts, or at least if he could catch him off guard again. It was intriguing to Ross that someone could have so many interesting questions to ask about and yet be so fascinating at the same time. As he rambled about his experiences, Ross' eyes lit up as he mentioned the candles. Finally an area where he knew for sure what he was doing.
"I bet you they used a levitation charm. I haven't a clue how they get them down without setting everything on fire. We aught to find out sometime! Wonder if there is a professor or something along those lines who has any idea... he trailed off, going into an obscure form of thought before snapping out of it. "We should try something like an experiment of sorts like they used to do in science class! There was a pause before he rushed into his sentence faster than a professional athlete BUTNOTTODAYTHOUGH! I'm.. sorta sleepy. Detectives need sleep too. he mumbled, taking a drink from his goblet while he was at it.

Maison gave a small pout, disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to see more spells or learn how to play with fire tonight. The waiting part was always the hardest. It felt like an eternity had gone by in the months between learning he was a wizard and leaving for Hogwarts. Now that he was here, all Maison wanted to do was soak up as much magic as he possibly could.
He almost considered begging the Hufflepuff boy to sneak out after curfew to show him, but had to stop himself as he remembered that it was only his first night at Hogwarts, and… well, it was probably best that Maison tried not to live up to the sorting hat’s claim about his tendency for rule breaking. Besides, they both needed their sleep, as much as Maison hated to admit it. He ultimately trusted Ross’ judgment and decided that, alas, he would wait until another day to begin his fire bending career.
At least Ross didn’t seem too worried about what the sorting hat had said. And he was certainly right about Maison having more traits. Honestly, if they were going to split up students by personality and values, you’d think they would take it more seriously. Letting a ratty old hat reduce you to one of four personalities after a few seconds of reading your mind… well, it was a bit demeaning, really.
There was nothing to be done about it now. Maison was a Gryffindor through and through, and when it boiled down to it, he didn’t really mind. He could have lion pride and still pursue friendships with students outside of his house. Like Ross, for example. And probably loads of other students. He wasn't about to let house differences stand in the way of forming new friendships.
A science experiment? Now there’s something his dads would approve of. “Yeah, let’s do it! For science! … Well. Wizard science.” Which he supposed was just the same as simply saying 'magic', but wizard science had a fun ring to it. It was almost as though he could resonate with it better. “We could do it tomorrow? Or on the weekend?” Despite how long of a day it had been, Maison really didn’t feel that tired. He still had so many questions to ask, so many things to see, so many people to meet. It didn’t matter that he had the next seven years ahead of him. He wanted to get started now.
“Okay, here's a question. Can you use a levitation charm on anything?” Maison blurted out, eyeing the candles above them. As far as spells went, this one definitely seemed like it could be useful, especially for carrying heavy things. “Like, could you use it on a person?”

While exhausted, Ross did feel thrilled someone was finally asking about magic and charms. It was nice to have someone care of it, especially when it was Ross' main subject. Well, he supposed it was more of Knox's main subject. He was really only following along in his foot steps. He could not help but wonder if the man was alive today, living a happy life. Perhaps he invented a charm of his own or of some sorts. All he was aware of was that he treasured every page of notes in that dusty old book. He really needed to get started on the next year's charms now that he was back at Hogwarts. In fact, maybe he needed to figure out who Knox even was.
As the boy inquired if they could legitimately do the experiment, Ross felt shocked. Nobody was ever interested in learning about Charms with him. Then again, maybe the few times he tried to invite someone something went terribly wrong. It was a curse of sorts. He had to take this into consideration along with the fact second years would likely have more homework than first years. If it was a weekend then maybe he would at least have some time to get to the Medical Wing and at least another day to forgive Ross for his sins.
"Wizard Science? I sorta like that." He remarked sleepily "How 'bout a wizard science weekend? Meet me in the court yard after lunch or somethin' on Saturday? Maybe an hour past lunch.. Don't want you to throw up or anythin.." he trailed off into thought.
As he took another drink from his goblet, he noticed Maison was looking up at the candles. He could only guess what he was thinking about, but seeing how curious he was brought a smile to his face. Talking about charms was one of his favorite things to do, and now he finally had an opportunity to ramble on and on about it without seeming like the most mundane person alive.
When he inquired about if it could be cast on anyone, Ross felt grateful to finally use the piece of knowledge he had been wanting to state for a year. He jumped in as soon as it was asked, not wasting a moment to think.
"Nope, absolutely not everything. The guy who invented it actually got himself stuck in the air because he thought it'd work on himself- nope. Only worked on his clothes. Had to walk alllllllll the way home in his underwear. Wouldn't want to be in that position He knew he wanted to fly. In fact, Ross wanted to too; however, it was just a bad idea in general. Well, that was until an idea dawned upon him. "... Unless ya wanna wear a pair of extra clothes on the weekend, of course.

While he would have much rather preferred tomorrow, Maison still nodded fervently at the proposition. He was not the patient type, but he also recognized that the newness of the castle and his classes would keep him occupied. If today was any indication of how quickly time would pass, a mere few days would fly by in an instant.
“Let’s do it!” Maison exclaimed, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically, garnering a few confused glances from nearby students. The young lion remained oblivious. “Wait – what do you mean, throw up? We’re not going to eat the candles, are we?” That would be gross. Unless Ross thought that he might get queasy at the sight of magic, but Maison prided himself in having a stomach of steel.
Ross knew an awful lot about charms. Enthralled, Maison held onto every word as the Hufflepuff boy flaunted his knowledge on the subject, roaring with laughter at the mention of the man having to walk home in his undergarments. It sounded like the sort of misfortunate event that Maison would wind himself up in, to be perfectly honest. At least someone else made a fool of themselves so that he wouldn’t have to.
But there was an idea… “Do you really think that would work?” Maison bit the edge of his lip nervously. He didn’t reckon that another pair of clothes would offer him any sort of advantage. He knew that there were better (and probably safer) ways to fly, namely on a broom. These thoughts sent Maison thoughts spiraling into a vast sea of questions. Such as, how did they make it so that brooms could fly? How would you even control a broom? As far as he was aware, there were no buttons or levers or anything. Were brooms sentient, too? Could they read your mind?
“Or….” Maison blurted out after a moment of contemplation. A brilliant idea had occurred to him. “What if we just put a levitation charm on my shoes? Do you think I’d levitate, then?”

Ross could not help but laugh at the remark, but then find himself curious again. Was there such thing as edible candles? That could not be that poor of an idea... One could eat the warm sides or cold depending on what they preferred! He was not exactly sure what to do of the fire part- but surely that could be ignored to enjoy how delicious an edible candle would taste? Yes, he supposed he would be more than willing to attempt to make that one day. Would licorice be flammable? He needed to do research; however, he was practically already burned everywhere on his body. He was not sure if he exactly would want to be burned in his mouth too despite the amount of times he had shoved something far too hot into his mouth.
"No no! I just know a couple hexes and curses and all, don't want ya getting sick because I accidentally screwed up your consistency with Immobolus or the dancing feet spell or somethin." his voice progressively became more mumbly as he went on, he would be out if he started counting sheep.
To be frank, he'd never casted a hex on anyone. He always had done it to an inanimate object just to be safe, but he was aware most of his third year spells would require a buddy. It made him anxious to attempt them, but he supposed it needed to be done in his second year or else he would get overwhelmed. He would simply have to find a buddy for it at some point.
When the boy inquired, he realized he likely did not get the point of his pointless knowledge. There was a reason people were not going outside nilly-dilly floating with their clothes on. With some adjustments of course that could be changed; however, it was simply poor in concept and theory.
"i suppose you'd float with your shoes, but I dunno how you'd get 'em back down. You'd sorta have to jump or somethin..." as he drifted into thought, one could practically see an even brighter light bulb above his head. "Unless I used Arresto Momentum to slow your fall! Got an extra pair of shoes to wear for a bit til the charm wears off or somethin?"
He was sleepy, but it was not difficult to tell how ecstatic the boy was. It was a plan- a plan with an adventure at the end. A plan where he could get to know someone. A plan where he could show off his charms. It was genius, really. No doubt about it. It hit every single cool kid checkbox Ross had, and that was saying something.

At least half of the words that had left the other boy’s mouth sounded like gibberish. Maison hadn’t the faintest clue what a hex was. Curses didn’t seem like a particularly good thing, either, and he wondered why Ross would even mention it unless it was. Was the Hufflepuff boy going to try to hurt him? Ross didn’t seem like the type of person who would harm him intentionally.
Maison decided not to give it too much thought. Hearing the Hufflepuff talk about magic filled him with anticipation. He couldn’t wait to start learning how to cast spells of his own. It sounded absolutely exhilarating.
Ross was noticeably tired, but Maison couldn’t keep himself from furthering the conversation. “There’s a spell that makes you dance?” At least, that’s what he assumed a spell called ‘dancing feet’ would do. “Does it only work on people? Could you make a spider dance?” He was blurting out questions rapid fire style now, unable to contain his fascination with the subject. There was so much that Maison was eager to learn from his new friend. Saturday really couldn’t come fast enough.
“Yeah! I’ll bring my spare pair of trainers!” Maison bounced on the balls of his feet, beaming at the thought of being able to levitate. “Say, could someone use the, er…” he trailed off, trying to remember the name of the spell that Ross had just mentioned, “resting momentum?” Close enough. “Could someone use that on themselves? Like, if I were to jump out of a really high tree, could I slow my own fall?”
It would really be a game changer if he could. His love for climbing trees occasionally came with the price of falling out of them, having sustained a particularly nasty fall in his childhood that resulted in needing an operation on his broken wrist. But if he could stop himself from falling… he would never have to worry about that sort of thing happening again.
“Maison!” The lion perked at the sound of his name, swiveling around to see one of the Gryffindor prefects waving him back towards the table. With a small pout, he turned back to Ross. “Looks like I’ve got to get back to my table. It was nice meeting you today, Ross! I’ll see ya on Saturday!” With that, Maison set off towards his house table, pausing midway to turn and give his new friend one more fervent wave. He couldn’t wait for Saturday to arrive.

Ross was not sure if it was due to how exhausted he was or if he had had too much of what was in his goblet, but his mind blanked. I mean- if it could work on a stack of books it could certainly work on a spider. Ross was not too keen on the existence of spiders. They fell in the 'danger' category that needed to be investigated more. They fell in the category of I Do Not Want To Piss This Being Off as well. Eight legs were far too many for him. Now it was not to say it was a fear; however, it was certainly something.
"Suppose you could, I'd hardly recommend it though. seems rather cruel dontcha think?"
Morals always came into play while talking about magic, but it was not his favorite thing to listen to. The people who taught history would bring it up frequently; however, he hardly paid much mind. He just supposed someone had to follow their own moral compass when it came to it. This would be all fine and dandy if his was... consistent? His morals seemed to come and go depending on the day. Did that land him on the neutral side of the alignment? He was unsure.
He was glad to hear the boy was agreeing. He had not done an actual science experiment in such a long period of time. It reminded him of school with the exception that it was actually fun. It felt nice actually knowing what he was doing for once when it came to experiments. He hardly had to give it a moments thought when he asked his next question. In his exhausted state, he had to take a moment to process what spell he was referring to in the first place.
"You could make an attempt! I'd test it out before ya jumped off the school or somethin'." he remarked. "Also, it's Arresto Momentum. Don't wanna say the wrong thing when castin' it or you'll certainly fall straight on your face. he added.
He really needed to do some refreshers on the knowledge of counter spells, as they seemed to consistently slip his mind. Perhaps the effects would wear off on their own, but he was not sure how long he would desire it to. He hardly grasped the rules to transfiguration, much less how long it takes for each spell to wear off.
Just as he felt he was about to pass out, he heard his new friend bid him farewell, A sigh of relief escaped his lips, as he had a feeling the whole event was against the rules. While he had been informed to 'not worry about it', he had been certainly worrying about it. He waved as he heard him scamper off, and as soon as he was certain he was not paying any attention he allowed himself to visibly relax.
Maison was the type of kid to always keep someone on their toes, even if he did not mean to. He appreciated that.
