AJ MacAllister was nervous. He didn't like being nervous, that constant sickly feeling, the unending twitch in the back of your head. The relentless energy building up and the feeling that you were either sweating too much or not enough. The anxiety building, wondering what if he said something wrong, or stumbled on his words, or just generally made himself out to look like a fool.

Yes, he was exceedingly nervous.

He had eagerly put his name forward for the Captain of the Gryffindor Duelling Team, now officially dubbed the Pride of Pendrast just recently. He hadn't expected much to come of it, someone older and more experienced than him would likely take the mantle and he could hopefully still squeeze in a spot on the team.

Not the case as it turned out, and Captain MacAllister he became.

It wasn't that he didn't want to be Captain, more that he just wondered Why he was captain, rather than someone...anyone else.

He wouldn't have much more time to dwell, the clock was ticking towards the meeting time. He softly placed his wand on the table, the intricate Hornbeam weapon looking far more grand than AJ ever felt as he gently slipped a copy of his bulletin board letter out from underneath it. It was probably a bit late to check it now, but he had to do something to pass the time.
To all recently selected members of the Gryffindor Duelling team,

As you all know, Duels kick off soon, I've scheduled a small team meeting today in the Duelling club room at 5PM. Just so we can all get familiar with each other and have a little think tank on things.

Hope you can mak it,

- AJ

Bugger and blast it, he'd misspelt the word 'make.' His team probably thought he was an idiot now, that's the precognition they would all be coming in with.

Well, he supposed he'd have to deal with that. He gently retrieved his wand and drummed the instrument against his thigh as he muttered introductions to himself. Trying to figure out the perfect intonation to greet everyone with. He wondered if he should try and force an English accent to make himself seem less weird.

Rose was excited to be on the dueling team. And it would help if she actually met the people that she was going to be working alongside with to duel and stuff. Plus, if she was going to be working alongside these people, she would rather see them as awesome and cool people she had met instead of awesome and cool people she hadn't met yet.

And first impressions were important, so Rose was attending.

She had brought along her wand, and had changed into one of her favorite sweaters and jeans that she wore often. It was sweater season, after all, and Rose would be taking advantage of it as long as she could. She didn't think they would be doing any dueling, so she had just changed into comfortable clothes rather than something practical.

"Hey! Are you the captain?" she asked the guy who was already at the meeting spot, coming up to him. This guy. This was the guy who had misspelled one of the most simple words in ever. It could have been quickly fixed, but he hadn't caught it.

Sounds like something Rose would do.

"I'm Rose. Meeting together before the duels start was a great idea, by the way," she added. Rose's American accent was evident as she talked to him, and her voice was a shade softer and gentler than the average voice. She rocked on her feet, waiting for more people to arrive, and tucked one amber curl behind her ear. "Do you think anyone else is gonna show?"

She was accepted to the duelling club. That was an achievement of her Gryffindor side — Mother would say. A bookworm, who wanted to practice after what happened the last and only time she duelled. Thanks to Marla.

Now she was a proud member of the team, ready to unleash all the duelling spells she managed to learn, practice and master. She just needed practice of aiming and tactics — a way to quickly come up with a correct decision in a stressful situation. Last time, she just used Diffindos all the way through the darkness — it would be a disaster if she'd do the same against students in the Duelling Club.

She entered the room, holding a book in her hands and her bag on a shoulder as usual across her chest: "Hello, AJ, hello, Rose," she would drop quickly, "As we haven't all gathered yet, I hope you don't mind me doing some reading."

She bothered to learn the names of all the team members. Well, she knew the names of the most Gryffindors her year and most of the younger Gryffindors and even the older ones, who agreed to help her with more advanced spells. Somehow she made it her prefect duty to know everyone by names. Just in case.

She sat on a nearby chair, dropped her bag on the neighbouring one and dived into reading. She was waiting for the meeting and spent the waiting time over some Duelling History reading, so she would continue to read for a while.

It was honestly a miracle that Katrina had gotten into the duelling team. Well, not a miracle, but a pleasant surprise. It hadn't looked like too many students were interested in joining, but she didn't think she would really be on the top of the list. She had minimal duelling experience and wasn't very social with the rest of her house. She was basically a nobody when it came to the Gryffindors. However, her status as a Duellist might help change that.

Katrina had received the invitation to the Duelling Team meeting and had debated actually showing up. Would it be awkward? Did she really have the time? Eventually, Katrina made up her mind that it wouldn't hurt to say a few hello's and then leave. There wasn't really an obligation to stay after all. Katrina took nothing but her wand in her Gryffindor sweatshirt. For the first time in a while, she left her journal back in her dorm. If she had her journal, she would have her head in it the whole time, however, if she left it, then she would be forced to talk instead of study.

Katrina entered the room and saw that there were only three people? Surely the team was larger than three? Katrina took a seat in a chair and twiddled her wand in her hands. Merlin, why had she thought leaving her journal in her dorm was a good idea! Instead of reading like the other girl sitting down, Katrina would have to talk.

Well, maybe not yet. Katrina put a semi-approachable expression on her face. Not quite a smile, but an expression that hinted at it. No reason to frighten people away.

Ruka was late but he hated moving around in his school uniform when classes were over and he was finally free to wear whatever he wanted to, so he had taken a quick detour to drop his cloak off in his dorm room and swap from black dress shoes to his favourite grey sneakers before heading toward the Duelling Club room he was supposed to be in at 5pm.

It probably didn't make a great first impression to be late, but what did he really know? He hadn't exactly thrown himself into extra curricular activities up until now, had never been to a club meeting before, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

Still, once he opened the door to the club room, he immediately started his apology: "I'm really sorry I'm..." He broke off for a moment as he let his gaze drift across the people who were inside the room so far. He recognised the boy from last school year's Talent Show, though they had never actually spoken, which was probably for the best, considering Ruka had realised that he had no real clue what the boy was actually saying when he talked. Maybe he talked a different language, or his accent was just far too thick.

Talking to AJ was a girl Ruka couldn't say he recognised but she had clearly had his idea of changing into comfortable clothes for this meeting. Unlike him, however, she had actually shown up on time.

The other two girls had apparently decided to take a seat while waiting for the rest of the group; One of them, someone Ruka recognised to be a Gryffindor Prefect, had gone as far as to bring a book for entertainment, but the other one - another girl Ruka thought looked vaguely familiar but he couldn't quite pinpoint from where - seemed to have missed out on bringing anything along to pass the time and didn't exactly appear to be ready to join in on the conversation that seemed to be going on between AJ and Sweater Girl.

"...late," Ruka finished his apology weakly. It really didn't seem like he was the only one taking his sweet time to get there, so any fears of having made a bad first impression immediately flew out the window. At the rate this seemed to be going, Ruka imagined everyone to be happy that people were showing up at all.

Sighing to himself, Ruka moved to drop his bag on the chair next to the girl without the book, a bright grin pulling at his lips as he regarded her for a moment. "Looking a bit lonely over here," he pointed out, gesturing towards the other people in the room as if to ask why she hadn't joined either of them for a bit of a chat before the meeting got started.

Shrugging a bit and smiling to show that he wasn't judging her for taking some time to herself, Ruka turned to check on the other people in the room. He was tempted to offer the Prefect a polite greeting, but she was reading and Ruka had learned to appreciate reading time as something sacred not to be interrupted unless absolutely necessary, so he passed her with nothing but a little smile and nod should she happen to look his direction at some point, and instead joined AJ and Sweater Girl.

"Quite the turnout," he said light heartedly, thumbs hooked in the belt loops of his ripped jeans. "Surely that's not everyone, is it?" Looking over his shoulder he stared at the door for a moment as if expecting it to give way to a flood of people at any moment now.

It didn't.

With a little sigh of disappointment he turned back to AJ and Sweater Girl, beaming at them excitedly. "I'm Ruka, by the way," he told them because introductions were polite, and Ruka was really trying hard to get better with people. This was a good chance to practice at the least.

It had been a rough 2nd year for little ol' Galton Lansdale. After a series of events driven by a wild lust for all things sweet and sugary, Lansdale needed to keep thing much more cool this year. And so far it had been. And though he'd kept his sweet tooth in check, or what he thought was "in check", he could feel himself slowly ramping back into those addictive tendencies. So, Galton needed something to focus his energy on.

When he was asked about his willingness to participate in the Gryffindor dueling club, he said he was. He applied just the next day. Truly, they would be missing out if Galton wasn't apart. What glory would he, and the team, miss out on without him? A lot, had to be a lot.

So he entered into the meeting room, still wearing his robes, with a smile on his face. The thought of his tardiness didn't cross his mind as he walked in and started towards an open seat. Though he didn't fuss much with keeping time, he didn't tend to be overtly late, just... punctual. He waved as he passed his teammates. Familiar faces, even if he hadn't ever formally met them.

"Hello" was all he said as he sat. Once seated he rummeged around in his robes and pulled out and handful of crumpled candies. He placed them on an open surface and smiled. "Have one if you like!" On the "like" he popped a Sherbet lemon into his mouth.

Slowly but surely the team started to filter into the room. Sure, some of them were 'late' but to be honest he hadn't expected the majority to be on time to the whole affair. The clubrooms were quite a recent addition, so it was unlikely most of them trekked this way often. In either case, he certainly wasn't going to be known as the strict Captain who demanded everyone be on time.

The first girl that had approached him, he remembered seeing her a few times but had never caught her name until he looked at the sign up list. Though it did help his nerves that he didn't have to ask her name first. She certainly sounded like she wasn't around here. She possessed quite a strange accent, like how was he even supposed to understand what she was saying?

He tried not to laugh at his own mental joke, opening his mouth to answer her question before he was interrupted by another girl, this one was a little more familiar, since the Prefects liked to make themselves easily recognisable, certainly didn't make her name any easier to pronounce though.

She spoke quickly and efficiently, as if she wanted to get introductions aside whilst expending as little energy as possible. He was about to explain that there wouldn't be much time to read before he was cut off by the entrance of another girl. As if he wasn't nervous enough meeting his team, of course a bunch of beautiful ladies felt the need to rock up first.

This girl didn't speak, AJ wasn't sure if that was a blessing or a curse. Now he had three Duellists to tango with, one who seemed eager, one who seemed shy, and one who seemed distant. What a fun assortment for a rather anxious Captain.

"W-" The door again, he'd almost been able to start a sentence this time. This next person was a name he had recognised when going through the list initially, and one he did actually remember from last year. The fiery haired fire-dancer. Someone who seemed almost too cool to be approached by someone like AJ, but the boy was going to have to cope with that if he was to be leading him.

He raised his hand and opened his mouth to speak, he paused and looked at the door. He stared, and stared, waiting for the infernal hinged contraption to make a single creak. After about fifteen seconds of watching he felt comfortable starting. "S- Creaaaaak "Aw Jings Crivens an' help ma-..." He grumbled to himself before taking a breath. It wasn't their fault for arriving as he was trying to speak.

This next entrant was an odd one, whenever AJ had seen them they were always doing something...peculiar. Not that it was a problem, perhaps it could be an asset to their team structure.

"Reeght Hullo!" He announced, wanting to get the words out before the door could silence him again. "Ut's goo' teh see yoo ull, than' yoo fer comin'. Ehm, Am shoor tha' rust wull shoo ap uvuntualleh, or meebee no'" He shrugged.

"Ehm, ma neems Ee-Jee, fer thoos tha' don' know." He introduced himself. "An I-I...wull bee yer Captun goen ferwerd." He tried to speak as slowly and clearly as possible, but there might still be some words that got lost in translation.

"Ut's relly greet tah finally mee' tha' lot of yoo' proper. Ehm, tha Co-Cuptun couldnae meek ut tehdee sunce she's a' Quddutch ah buleeve."

"Am uxceeted tah geh ta knoo ull of yeh as weh goo on bu' fer noo does unnywun have unny quesstiuns?" He asked the group, looking around at their expectant faces.

Rose would wave awkwardly to Meenauh- she hadn't officially met the prefect and really respected and looked up to her- she was a prefect, after all, as well as two years older than Rose was.

The guy she had started to talk to had been interrupted several times, but he seemed determined. More of the team arrived, though Rose was sure it wasn't all of them.

Soon, two more gingers- a guy and a girl- and an enthusiastic boy around Rose's age joined them. Rose was still standing near the captain of the dueling team but would back up to give him more room to dole out his announcements as he started talking.

Rose did have an American accent. In her opinion, it was fairly strong- many people had called her out and asked her about it- she was surprised she hadn't been mistaken for an Illvermorny student yet. Yeah, she had lived in America pretty much her entire life, but her mother, who had raised her and her siblings, had an American accent, which rubbed off on the five of them. But compared to AJ's, Rose's accent was barely noticeable at all.

She had a hard time understanding a lot of what he said, but she was able to piece together the words she did comprehend to get the gist of what he said, even if a few moments after he finished speaking. It was probably easier for Rose since she had been around more people who spoke like that, but she considered herself a little rusty since she hadn't been over to America in a few months- since last Christmas. And even then, she had spent more time with her extended family rather than others, and her extended family was a little more proper compared to a lot of others in their area. AJ was also speaking slowly to help the gathered students out a little more.

As she didn't have any questions, Rose shook her head and stayed quiet.

Thick of skull when it came to other things, the long unused cogs in Galton's mind began to churn when thinking about dueling. Something about the practical applications of the magic they were learning (you know, besides the actual application of said magic) really got Galton excited. He would opened a second piece of candy, a pack of jelly slugs, and throw one in as he listened to his new captain speak.

And at the end, when asked for questions, a smile broke out on the little boys face. Galton had almost as many questions as he had candies. A hand would shoot up into the air, just as his tongue parted his lips and greeted the team. He looked like he really wanted to ask them.

Without waiting to be called on, he went ahead with the barrage. A full attack on his new team. If his captain wasn't up to this, how could he stand the head of a few incedios?

"Ooooh! ME! Okay, first, do we have a general plan of how to counter a team harnessing the heightened damage of multi-round fire spells? Doooo we know who we are paired with? What are your thoughts on spells meant to slow you opponent over raw damage? Are you ready to hurt others? Can we get extra practice if we need it? And, are you providing snacks?" It was a long list. Galton had taken a few large breathes in the middle of some of the questions and was taking another at this moment. What fun this team would have.

She would keep reading the book while interrupting her reading to flash a gaze at the incoming duellists. As all names were learnt in advance, it was a subconscious game to match the names to the people who entered the room. @Katrina Walker, check. Ruka Tan, check. @Galton Lansdale, check. Galton was kind of famous and not for good reasons. The fact that he couldn't remember some stuff smoothed his chaotic deeds at the ball and other places.

The captain @Allister-Jameson MacAllister started to speak as it seems the meeting finally started. She quickly packed her book into her bag and made an enormous attempt to understand the boy. Impossible, just impossible. AJ, know, captain, forward, Quidditch. Those were the keywords that resembled similarly to the words she knew. At least something to salvage. Questions! She got questions! She wanted to start, but Galton was faster to fast-mumble all the questions he had. Another stream of speech to try to decipher. After he finished, she actually nodded as it seemed he came prepared with all the tactics and strategy questions. Something that she lacked. She came to learn and to talk about duelling. There were different years in the team, so different span of knowledge. She wondered how the duels would go — would they face only their years or no? Higher years knew more spells and thus had an advantage.

"I would start with the pairs. Is it known who we're paired with or that is something we need to decide ourselves?" she suddenly broke her silence and asked a direct question to AJ, following the same question asked by Galton in the overall pile of other questions.
