Porthcurno Beach | Cornwall | England | Summer of 2017

Rarely the house would go on a trip. It worked as a family trip, a bunch of kids following Lady Aithne since they couldn't be in London alone for so long. One thing Rosie admired in Aithne was how much she resembled her family and specially her mom as a potion expert. Lady Aithne had her own projects and secretive works to do besides taking care of the wizards and witches she took in. Rosie wouldn't know exactly what was that Lady Aithne was looking for, something that got her a little cranky that was obvious. On her normal self Lady Aithne would look composed and unbothered most of the time, kids know this because they can smell an adult that lacks presence. However, now, it seemed something was troubling the mentor, she had a lot on her mind that's for sure. On other occasions someone would be sent to the house to look after everyone, but it was summer, the destination was Cornwall, and everyone did their chores and asked pretty please can we travel this summer? And Lady Aithne agreed.

A cottage in a valley after St.Levan Church was arranged 3.5 kilometers from Porthcurno beach, in the beginning of the summer still a very reserved and isolated place, plus, when the sea levels are low is a very cozy corner.
It was a Tuesday morning after they had arrived, Cornwall was less warm then expected, as if the atmosphere of the place was manifesting dispositions for everyone that arrived there, but the sun was shy. With an old bike she could get to Porthcurno in fifteen to twenty minutes. The sun had just risen and most kids were still asleep by the time Rosie set up a lunchbox in the bike basket and a backpack in her shoulders. She would be back until 10 at most, and could say she went to browse in the city local libraries or even tried to buy breakfast.

It was probably 14°C, very humid too, but with her raincoat on and a cardigã under it, Rosie would be well prepared. She was on a mission, a mission to collect seaglass and shells.

It was Tuesday morning and tonight Haley, her parents and her grandparents would leave again. They had already spent 7 days in the house right on the beach and even though Haley was looking forward to her own bed and room again, she knew that she would miss the view incredibly.

She looked at the clock and it was only 7:00 a.m., but she couldn't sleep any longer either, she wanted to make the most of the last day in this beautiful place. So she got up from her bed, went to the bathroom and got ready. Then she went downstairs to the kitchen. This was a huge room and took up almost the entire first floor. The room was not only the kitchen, but also the dining and living room. She went into the living room and sat down on the armchair facing the window front. She pulled up her legs up, grabbed a blanket that lay to her left and looked out over the beach and the sea.

The cottage was one of the few on the cliffs and hardly visible from the beach. The house could only be seen by the current residents and the owners. A spell was put on it because the owners did not want Muggle or other magicians to gain access to the house without being asked.

Haley saw on the horizon how the battle between the sun and the clouds began and it looked like the sun would win today. She was very hopeful that she did, because on her last day she wanted to feel the warm sunrays on her skin and spend the day at the beach.

She was sure that her parents would wake up soon and they could prepare breakfast together. Afterwards, however, she would make her way to the beach as soon as possible. She heard faint footsteps from the upper floor and got up from her armchair, put the blanket back together and waited for her parents. She stood in front of the huge window front and looked lost in thought at the sea.

The sun was glistening beautifully on the surface of the water and the birds were circling over the sea. It was a beautiful morning and the world seemed so quiet from up here. On the beach she could not see a soul, but it was still very early. Usually it started at 10:00 am and the first people appeared on the beach.

But just as Haley was about to turn around to go to the kitchen, she noticed a small dot moving faster than usual. This was definitely not someone who was out for a walk. She struggled and her eyes formed to slit when she realized after a while that someone was riding a bike there. She looked again at her watch and was amazed that she had never seen someone on the beach that early.

"Good morning love" she heard it behind her. She turned around and saw her father standing there. She smiled sweetly at him and they started to prepare breakfast for the family.

Porthcurno Beach | Cornwall | England | Summer of 2017

The interesting thing about the Porthcurno beach is that it feels private and isolated, is a corner that looks small specially if you just look up pictures of it. The moment she arrived Rosie noticed the privilege and greatness of it all, and wondered how it would be if humans were never to be allowed there. If the ocean never retreated and the waves and water were always high enough to reach the stone walls. Cliffs. Accidents of the movements inside Earth's earth. She looked up the hills behind her, they would certainly have a stunning view, but they seemed impossible to climb? How would one get there? She did not know.

Somewhere on the top she imagined a castle. There were stories about an old castle, like the medieval ones, but if you search for it in books you can not find any. Just as the stories of the rare sea glass in that beach. The seaglass of the blind. The one that helps you see not what you want but what you need. It is said to be used in potions. One day maybe if she got enough of them she could ask for a potion? Lady Aithne would hate that. Maybe her aunt would support it. For the sake of the experiment. She wondered if muggles usually looked for seaglasses there, as if they would be simple cute decorations. There were also blue shells, blue shells are the best for night lights.

The backpack and the bike rested in the far left, next to the lower rock formation, close enough to a spot that she could take off her sneakers and browse on the border of the shore. She first got a bit distracted by the feeling of the water on her feet and the sound of the weak waves crushing, the bubbling of the foam as it goes back. Steady movements, alluring but lowkey scary as well. Rosie walked across it, minding the wind blowing in her face, the hair in a french braid and pins helped but she could tell it would look frizzy later. Stumping with the splashes of her private beach she started running and soon got a stick in the ground to also leave traces in the soft sand. "A rose was here", she wrote and the water came and erased most of it, but she laughed at it. A good companion it is, oneself and the actions of nature. If she looked back she could still see her stuff, safely, but she still felt like going further maybe from side to side in that little paradise.

Haley stood in the kitchen and stirred the dough in the bowl while her father added the remaining ingredients. When he was finished he went to the stove and let the pan get warm. At the same time Haley danced through the kitchen, the bowl in her arm and still stirring and singing with her father

"Here comes the sun, do, dun, do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here"

The both continued singing while her father made the pancakes in the pan and Haley set the table. A short time later her mother and grandparents came into the kitchen. They ate together and Haley was especially fast this morning because she knew the sooner she was done, the sooner she would able to leave.

She was just putting her last morsel of pancake in her mouth and eating the last fruits that were still on her plate when she promptly started to slide restlessly back and forth on her chair. Her mother, who was engaged in a conversation noticed this in the corner of her eye and looked at her daughter and raised one eyebrow.

"Maaaay I?" Haley asked as sweetly as possible and looked at her with a dog's eye. "Come on, go!" winked her mother. "You know the rules," Haley was also admonished by her father, but she was already out the door and hastily put on her shoes and coat in the hallway.
"See you later!" Haley shouted and closed the front door behind her.

The house was at the top of the cliffs and there was no direct way to the beach, so they thought at first glance, but a few meters from the house they came to a small ledge of the cliffs. Once there, the door, camouflaged as a stone, opened automatically and Haley could enter the cliff. From there a stone staircase went down and after a few more minutes she had arrived in a cave on the beach.

She could already hear the sea and the wind was blowing through her hair as she got closer and closer to the exit of the cave. The fresh, salty sea air rose into her nose nad she already missed this place but she didn't want to spend her last day longing for it and so these thoughts quickly disappeared from her mind.

When she arrived at the beach she took off her shoes, picked them up and started running. She walked along the beach and wiped the ever-recurring waves as good as possible, but after a few steps she already felt the damp cold on her feet but she enjoyed it. After a few meters she noticed a person in the distance and she remembered the little black dot she had seen earlier from the living room.

She wondered again who would be here so early, normally the beach was still empty at this time of day, but Haley didn't mind that she wasn't alone. She kept walking towards the person, her curiosity was too great to move in another direction.

Some white and yellowish shells are the most common type, they are the ones that are sure to be by the coast in the morning. mostly small, some medium, nothing like Rosie was really waiting for. Although she grabbed some, she didn't want to be full of replacements when the really good blue shells came to life. Maybe she would have to dig for them? No one told her what was the secret to blue shells.
No glass had been seen yet. Fortunately, she already had a feeling that in the spare sections in which the wave retreats the most and the soft, soaked in water sand is bare for a couple of seconds, that was the place to find the sea glasses.
She resolved she would go back to her bag and storage the shells found and get a small plastic claw to scavenge more easily. While running back, feeling her white ocean treasures go round inside her palms she saw a girl in a distance, it was still very early and that...thing...appeared out of nowhere. Oh tourists.
Best thing to do was definitely play muggle.

Rosie started by waving and approaching the redhead. _Hi!_She said out loud while still a distance away. Be cool be cool be cool..._Watcha' doin' you need help?_Rosie made her best to not sound like herself. If she would pretend to be a muggle she would have to be nice and still distract or dismiss this girl the easier possible. _Is not really nice to be out here today y'know. Is prob gonna rain._ This human was the same age as her...But she wasn't exactly with the time to entertain people and make friends.

Haley could already see in the distance that the once small black dot, which had meanwhile turned into a person, had also noticed her. Now they were moving towards each other and the closer Haley came, the more the person turned into a girl. Haley estimated the girl's age to be about hers and looked around in wonder for her parents, but she could not discover anybody else.

Haley watched her almond brown hair blowing in the wind and suddenly she realized that the two of them were only a few steps away from each other. What would she do now? Just keep walking? Smile? Say something? Once again she had not thought this through. But before she could get lost in her thoughts the decision was already taken from her. Slightly perplexed she looked into the girl's face, "Oh, hey!" Haley answered quickly and her lips formed a big grin.

Haley noticed her green eyes and was astonished, she met far too seldom people who have the same eye color as herself. But apart from their fair skin, they had no other things in common.
"Oh, no everything is fine! I'm just enjoying my last day here at the beach." While the two of them stood there, Haley buried her toes in the sand and started missing this place again before she was even gone. "What brings you here so early? Usually the mug..." Haley cleared her throat and the shock was written all over her face, she almost said Muggle but thank Merlin she realized it early enough to not do so, "'sorry, I swallowed" she smiled. "Normally you don't see other people here at that time" she continued.

"I really hope it won't rain, " Haley looked up at the sky a little worried. She wanted to enjoy this day, "all morning I hoped that the sun will win the battle against the clouds." She had to laugh, she was sure it sounded totally idiotic. "Anyway, if it starts raining, I know a good cave right on the beach."

The girl smiled apparently not noticing anything weird, so Rosie smiled too, getting an urge to do something with her hands besides suspiciously standing there with a collection of random shells. Was that suspicious? Felt weird. Felt weird to imagine being a muggle judging that or the whole situation was objectively weird? Last day at the beach? So she was a tourist. Oof.
_That is nice, I just got here, so I thought I would use the first day to explore._
And she lost a little of her focus trying to figure out if she should walk to her backpack or simply stock all shells in her pockets and maybe hold the hem of her coat to store them as well. _What? Oh, I wanted to come and hunt for...things. Things. Yes, indeed some treasures things before the beach got packed. Ya'know._She seemed to be very familiarized with the place. How long did she know Rosie was there? Oh god, she did not even think about how someone could have been watching her all this time. Wow. _So you live around here?_ She probably owned a beach house like most people there, the question was, where was her house? Stretching the neck to look around, on top of the cliffs and mountains to see if some roof was visible Rosie could not catch a glimpse of anything. The light getting stronger and in her eyes were also not very helpful. _I came with my bike. I hope it does not rain too because well, it is not even actually mine. _ And by the mentioning of a cave....A cave....Caves are the just explendid spot for accumulation of defects of the sea.
_Really, where is this cave....If you know this area you wouldn't happen to know about a certain...Old myth castle would you? Maybe is a fort i'm not even sure._
Definitely unbearable to be holding all those shells in the hand. _Hold on a second._And she took a step into the shore to wash the shells properly. _Come, I'll put those in my bag._ Maybe if a muggle could be of help nothing bad would happen. If muggles were in that beach all the time that meant nothing magic was causing danger. Plus, muggles often have treasures and information they have no idea how powerful they are, so if this girl could help Rosie and not even realize it, therefore being kept safe, it would be a win-win.

Haley eagerly listened to the girl's words, "Oh, are you on vacation here too?" Haley envied her a little bit, the fact that she just had arrived means that she certainly had a few more days in this beautiful place. She noticed how the girl was always a bit restless with her hands and at some point she noticed that she had shells in her hands. "Do you collect them?" She pointed to her hands with her look. Haley always liked seashells, but she never took them from the beach. As a child she was always afraid that the shells would miss her beautiful home on the beach. Today she knows that they probably do not, but she never started collecting them.

"Uh, yes, we have a cottage near here, it's not too far away." Haley noticed her searching look and hoped she wouldn't ask for more information. What else could she tell her? We live in a house at the top of the cliff, but you can't see that because you are a Muggle? Certainly not.

"Oh, uh, no, I'm afraid I don't know anything about a mythical castle." Haley got a little sad. If she had heard about it earlier, she would have spent her free time finding it for sure.

Haley followed the girl to her borrowed bike, "Are you looking for a specific one or do you just collect the ones you like?" Haley was still a bit unsure about the situation and watched the girl curiously as she stowed the shells. "What's your name? I'm Haley!"

Collect? _Yes..I collector. I'm collecting them. For the purpose of..._Hold on why would muggles collect stones or shells, or anything really, if they make no potions out of it? Oh right! decoration! _Pupose of accumulating stuff. Decorating stuff. Craft stuff._ Witchcraft stuff. Lying was harder then Rosie expected. No no, she could do it. She could, it was like playing a role. It was like theater! To the stage! Keeping a safe distance when dealing with muggles made it look more easy to lie. But to be so close, and alone with one. Be cool. Be cool. Cool. Cool. Cool. _Cool._ Oh so her family was nearby...Adults. Rosie definitely needs to be careful. Specially if she was to find something like seaglass of the blind, or blue shells. They were pretty and the girl could want some simply for not knowing their value. _Ok so, if you live close you must know this place better than me. You could help me. But, I am looking for special seaglass. And colorful shells.I really need them, for a- for a friend. And I would give you these white shells if you want. You can show me the cave. And Rosie set a special place for those simple shells in her bicycle basket, afterwards cleaning her hands in her own pants. offering hands to the redhead who now was named Haley. _My name is...Ro- Roxanne. Can call me Roxie. We are friends now. Rosie took off her raincoat because the sun and all the running made her a little sweaty. _I guess I won't need this. Show me the way Haley_

Haley was a little confused by her reaction. It almost seemed like she wasn't even sure why she was collecting the shells, but Haley didn't give it a second thought; she knew that Muggles could be a little strange now and then. But the next moment the girl showed such enthusiasm for a certain kind of shells that Haley didn't believe her. She was sure there was more to it than that, but she didn't give it a second thought as well.

"I'm only here for a vacation but I'd be happy to show you the cave." Haley took Roxanne's hand and shook it briefly "Nice to meet you, Roxie" she smiled at her, surprised by her manner. But now that she had determined that the two were friends, Haley has decided to play along.

At her offer to give her a shell, Haley had to smile a little. She couldn't have used those shells for anything, especially not for any spells or potions, but she didn't want to be unkind and nodded her thanks. Shrugging her shoulders, she turned and slowly started walking towards the cave, making a hand gesture for Roxie to follow her. "Come on, this way."

The two walked through the sand, Haley still not wearing shoes and enjoying the feel of the sand under her feet. "Just a few yards, it's a little hidden." In fact, few knew there was a cave there, which was a good thing, because otherwise the risk would be too high that muggles could find the secret staircase which wouldn't be that bad, because the door disguised as a stone only opened for wizards, but still it would be too risky for a muggle to see someone coming through the stone wall.

She didn't worry about that with Roxie though, after all she was just looking for some shells. "So what brings you to this beautiful place? Well, except for the shells." Haley smiled at Roxie, eager to hear her answer as the two got closer and closer to the cave. And suddenly they were only a few meters away from the huge cliffs and far and wide there was no cave to be seen, but Haley knew which way. "Okay we'll wait a second for the waves to recede and then we'll walk around the rock sticking out." Haley pointed to a corner of the cliff that kept getting danced around by the waves but few knew that if you went around the corner the stone ledge went back and there was the entrance to the cave.
