"C'mon Hanzo. Let's hunt us a being who thinks that they can end the world before we can!"

Hanzo swallowed hard, nodding a little too profusely at his friend’s call to action as a subtle bout of anxiety swept through his already tense nerves like an icy Scandinavian tide, taking with it what could only be described as the excitement and conflicted emotions he’d previously expressed towards their dance moments prior. It was worrisome, how far away Romeo’s voice had sounded over the mutterings of the crowd about them – this was, of course, due to the fact that Romeo had dove into the plethora of students several moments before the Norwegian had, giving Hanzo a considerable time disadvantage and a barrier of bodies to overtaken in order to catch up with his partner in crime. The Norwegian, in fact, was quite at a loss in the moment, his mind palace being slowly suffocated by the adrenaline rush of the hunt as all rational thought sorely deserted his countenance, a sense of blind loyalty taking its place as he breathlessly pushed and shoved his way through the crowd of much-taller students. It should have been more than obvious to all who observed the child’s sorry demeanor that he wasn’t enjoying his adventure at all, nor did he think kindly regarding the pursuit of the Spøkelses, but he supposed at this point he didn’t have much of a choice in the matter – after all, he was loathe to leave Romeo to his own devices, especially since those devices usually ended with someone getting hurt. Romeo was the brawns of the operation, and Hanzo was the magical bulk – it was, in hindsight, a rather powerful team-up, as in a rather poetic way, one offered quite the perfect support where the other was lacking. Hanzo was thankful for Romeo in this way… even if he was about to have a heart attack trying to catch up to him.

Sweat beginning to bead upon his forehead, the child would eventually find himself at the side of his partner in crime – it was a comforting feeling, he deducted, having finally reached his destination. However, not even this notion would offer him the solace in which he was avidly searching. His breath escaping from his lips in an erratic manner and once soft eyes now carrying a sense of distress about them, the Norwegian would waste not a moment in grasping the elbow of his partner with a uniquely weak fervor, though Romeo would know well that Hanzo’s grip upon it was as strong as he could muster. It was with great shame that he’d admit his lack of cardio training– Quidditch, after all, was a sport that required technique over muscle and stamina, unless one found themselves in the path of an angry bludger. He must have looked silly in that moment, his hair askew and a worrisome look in his eyes as he fought to control the breath that had so disgracefully escaped away from him, his hand angrily clutching the elbow of Romeo with a fervor not unlike that of a vice. He would take great pleasure in smacking the shoulder of his former dance partner sharply with his back hand, his eyes flying to the taller boy with an emotion resembling a sad excuse for anger. “Let’s hunt, he said! Let’s save the world, he said! Follow me, he said! As if!” he scolded in a miffed manner, though it would sound far from properly angry in its naturally soft state. Then, in Russian, “You know I can’t run. Everyone here is so tall…” The outburst had done well to dismiss some of the rogue emotion lying within the confines of his chest, and he would soon release the elbow of his friend – he couldn’t stay angry at Romeo, especially when the other hadn’t given him a proper reason to be angry.

His eyes, now dropping away from Romeo, would brush lazily about his surroundings in that moment, suddenly catching the familiar visage of one of his good friends – Alec looked so deep in thought, Hanzo couldn’t help but note with a sense of dissociation to the situation. Alas, the two hadn’t had time to converse since their arrival at Hogwarts, the boy noted with a pang of guilt. Perhaps he should say something, then, and acknowledge the presence of his other good friend. “Oh, Alec, hi!” he would wave idly, suddenly feeling incredibly pathetic given the situation. His own greeting had been so out of place – Alec was obviously preoccupied, and uninterested in conversation. “I like your suit,” the Norwegian would add nonetheless after a rather awkward pause, feeling his words get away from him. Then, getting the instinct that he weas missing something important, his gaze would soon follow that of his classmate, before landing on the wall of the Rehearsal Room, or more specifically –

“Oh, Romeo, the man is bleeding!” the Norwegian would suddenly wail in dismay, his soft voice soon welling up in a mixture of alarm and distress as he pushed through the crowd break, stepping gently towards those already making attempts to help or interrogate the image. He probably can’t speak in his state, the boy deducted loosely in one glance, taking in the broken gasps emanating from the lips of the poor victim. The very sight pricked at the edges of the boy’s vision, but he willed his tears away, managing to keep a somewhat stoic, soft look upon his face as he approached the image with a sense of grace. He – he could do something, surely he could! But what? Drawing his wand out with a practiced flourish, he would shut his eyes for a moment, searching the depths of his mind palace, before opening them once more, his stormy gray pupils flitting about in search of anything that would help him in his mission to aid the mysterious injured man. He would begin by offering the victim a haunted sort of smile, the sort which carried some semblance of determination and worry, whilst all the same taking a moment to speak words of assurance – “Hang in there, sir. We’re going to help you.” He would have to live up to his words – he would start by observing the painting more closely, or more specifically, the scenery the man found himself in, as well as the area Hanzo himself inhabited. There were more important things at stake than the interrogation of the victim at this point, as the poor man was probably dying – what kind of human was he, to just let it happen? Was there a way inside the painting? Perhaps its settings resembled another destination in the castle, or elsewhere? Did the man have a defineable face, one he might recognize? Perhaps there was a picture-man nearby that could lend his assistance?

The few moments of hesitation had given Prometheus a head start, and now Dee was hurriedly pushing through between the people, dodging students in a variety of costumes while trying to spot Ruka and his companions. Three green-clad figures floating mid-air should not be all that hard to spot, but, well, they hadn't been very high above ground, and Dee was not very tall.

Thankfully, it really wasn't very hard to figure out where they were headed - just follow the stream of people away from the Masquerade and the Costume Party - so Dee abandoned the idea of finding them now and just headed along with the group to their destination. When she got there, people were already crowded around the painting - chattering, gossiping, discussing. A few people were heading off to talk to other paintings, someone seemed to be casting a spell.

Dee's aquamarine eyes scanned the crowd, focused, trying to spot three green figures on- there! Nimbly, Dee dodged around some other students, ducked under one boy's particularly wildly gesticulating arm, and then stepped next to Ruka and his companions. She had to look up at them, the small distance they were hovering above ground enough to raise them above eye level, although the boy in the frog costume seemed tiny between the other two - and Ruka wasn't very tall. "You could have waited for me," she pointed out, playful irritation in her voice and amusement shining from her eyes. "Instead of leading me around on a wild fairy chase. I think you didn't use enough fairy dust to make me fly, too." Speaking of... how were they doing that? Tinkerbell had managed to fly not by happy thoughts, but by hopping onto something, so... they were sitting on something invisible. That had moved here on command. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously, she reached forward - and felt her fingers brush something soft - and invisible. Cloth. Oh. She'd heard of invisibility cloaks - who hadn't? - but weren't those incredibly rare? Surprise overshadowing the satisfaction at having figured out the secret, she threw another gaze up at Ruka, mouth already open, but then she just grinned and shook her head. "Maybe I don't want to fly, after all," was the only thing she said.

Deciding to not shatter the illusion for now, her gaze moved from Prometheus to the other two. Mr Frog, she was rather sure, she had never talked to before, although she recognised him as someone from her year, but Peter... Peter seemed more familiar. It was hard to tell with the mask he was wearing which was hiding half of his face and much of his eyes, and the hat on top of his red hair, and she might not have realised if they hadn't met again for that debate last month, but she was suddenly rather sure of who this was. Ruka's not-brother brother, the Great God Pan, Mr Sagacious Snake, and apparently, tonight, Peter Pan. She suddenly wondered about the amount of mischief all of those nicknames implied.

Her own mask had been left behind in the ballroom, forgotten, so there was nothing concealing the smile that lit up her face. "Nice to meet you again, Peter," she told the boy at the far back, before turning her attention to the boy between the two of them. Her eyes wandered up to the frog eyes on his costume, and she grinned brightly, obviously delighted. They had expected the Costume Party to be far less popular than the Masquerade, and that was fine - it had, after all, been meant to be a bit of a calmer place, a refuge of sorts - but she was glad some people had decided to show up in costumes, and this little frog was adorable. "And nice to meet you, Mr Frog. I love your costume."

Finally, Dee turned towards the front of the group, the large painting, only half visible between gaps in the crowd. Her smile dimmed a little, but didn't quite leave. "What do you think of this mystery?"

-The texts in bold are in Russian-
As he walked after the cat, Alexander managed to take a good look at it; the way her fur was, the shape of her tail and ear suggested a specific kind of breed, and the young Durmstrang student immediately connected it to the one that used to walk around the courtyard in front of his house; he knew exactly which one it was, and he stored that information in his mind.

Following the spectral cat, Alexander noticed some candies on the ground; he picked up a couple of them (an acid pop, a sherbet lemon and a toothflossing stringmint) and placed them inside one of the pockets of his trousers. That was quite peculiar, did the cat lose them? Or did someone place them there?

Looking around confused, as if to find the original owner of the sweets, his eyes got caught by someone dressed as… was that a flying fairy? How was that even possible? It was hard to tell who was hiding behind the mask, and he certainly did not get the Peter Pan themed costume (he was, after all, a pureblood and he grew up with different tales); he actually thought it looked quite silly, maybe even immature.

Shaking his head, he looked away and then saw two familiar figures, and he smiled; finally he had managed to spot two of his good friends, Hanzo and Romeo. He waved at them and walked towards the duo. "Hey guys! Here to solve the mystery as well?" he asked, and then gave Hanzo a brighter smile, "Thanks! I like yours as well," he genuinely said.

After that, he resumed following the cat again, while still walking next to his friends. Alexander's eyes scanned his surrounding and he noticed the vast amount of paintings that now surrounded the group; they must have walked for a while for the scenery to change like that. He almost ran into someone before he noticed that the cat had stopped in front of a rather big painting.

The golden frame caught his attention first, as its bright colour was hard to miss; however, the moment the boy's eyes noticed the vermilion liquid around the man in the painting, his eyes darkened slightly as he frowned. The man looked as if he was trying to ask for help or say something, but no sound was coming from him. Who did that to him?

"Do you know who did this? Can you tell us?" he asked in English to the man in the painting once he was close enough to it. "If you can't talk, you could- maybe you could try to write it using the blood? We want to help you," he suggested as he hoped that the man in the painting would be able to actually communicate with them.

Søren nodded as Henry spewed facts about patronuses. He hoped that the boy was fond of extra reading and that the second years didn’t need to know any of this for their exams, because Søren would be in big trouble. All of it sounded like new information to him, so he was thankful for Henry’s word vomit. “Maybe it’s not the ghost’s patronus, then? I don’t know him, but he looked a little too shaken to be able to conjure up something while thinking about a happy memory.

As started talking to the others around, Søren turned his attention to the paintings, hopefully coming off polite enough for them to offer up some information. As his spiel came to an end, the belligerent voice of Cupcake met his ears with a timely insult. Turning with to meet her with a smile as the portraits responded in kind, Søren tittered. “At least I don’t have to work hard for them to like me,” he responded to her in a joking manner. Henry’s quip came before his, less jest and more defense in his words. Søren knew the girl was like a bomb waiting to explode and before she could pounce on him, with words or fists, he held up a hand to Henry. “It’s fine, Henry. She’s my… friend.” His eyes flickered towards her, hoping she wouldn’t turn her brewing anger on him for putting a label on their oddly tense relationship.

He thanked the portraits for their help and followed the group. “If this were a real crisis situation, the portraits would be no help at all. There’s no reason for them to keep information from us, so this is probably something set up by the ball organizers, right?” he wondered aloud once he was out of earshot of the portraits, but not fully willing to assume there was no danger. “And what tragedy are they talking about?” Looking back to make sure Cupcake was keeping up, he followed the group as they tailed the eerie cat. On his way, he spotted candy littering the floor and was reminded of the ones who found candy closer to the ballroom. “Did anything come of these?

When the cat came to a stop in front of a portrait of a dying man, Søren assumed that this was the tragedy the other portraits spoke of. It could’ve been a performance, but the pained expression on the man’s face seemed so real. There were a few people milling about or just arriving. Some were inspecting the painting or speaking to it. He could hear the word Reparo uttered somewhere, but he was quite unsure of what the spell could do for a portrait that wasn’t exactly broken. Or was he mixing up his spells again?

Overhearing one of the girls with Henry, he approached their duo. “A wand and a bone crossed? I’ll ask 'em.” He was about to talk to the portraits anyways, per the directions of those nearer to the rehearsal room. Departing from the group, he approached some nearby portraits. “Good night, ladies and gentlemen,” he repeated, like clockwork, “Did you happen to notice who or what attacked your fellow portrait over there? And have you seen a ghostly fellow riding through here on his horse, wearing a cloak with an emblem that looked like a crossed wand and bone? Does that kind of emblem mean anything to you?

On their way to the hallways, Robert had commented on the possibility of being a Patronus. "Patronus is Latin - derived from Latin? I'm not sure - so it would fall under the second declension. Therefore, the plural would be Patroni," Callista murmured. At the sight of the Patronus playing with a cat, she commented, "I've never seen an animal ghost, but can Patroni interact with normal animals?"

"[..] wearing a cloak with an emblem that looked like a crossed wand and bone..." If Callista's ear could twitch, it would have. A crossed wand and bone? Why does that sound familiar..? A girl she hadn't seen before mentioned something about the Beauxbaton symbol, which were two wands crossed. Callista shook her head. That's not it... A lightbulb flashed in her head.

"Um..." she cleared her throat and raised her hand a little. (Someone needs to tell this poor girl this isn't a classroom.) "The, uh, the crossed wand and bone is the symbol of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. The emblem is located on the left chest of their robes, which are green," she shared, almost matter-of-factly. Nerdy as always...

Her hand went to the back of her neck, embarrassed. "Um, why?" She hadn't caught the first part, about the ghost rider, only the emblem. She had never been to the hospital, but she had read up on anything about magic that she got her hands on, so she knew of it. Just like how she had finished reading all of her books early on, she had for some reason read a book on St. Mungo's Hospital.

At Robert's cry, she turned around, surprised. "What?" Callista asked curiously. At Robert's draw of his wand, she tensed. "Did something happen?" She drew out her own wand as well. She would still hear whatever the painting had to say.

The broom slowly drifted along, and Jake watched the other students walking. Being in between Jack and Ruka (Peter and Tinkerbell) had given him enough comfort to get by, for a little. But the evening had taken a turn for the unexpected. There was little scarier than the unknown, because the unknown could be the scariest thing you could ever think of. They were off the rails now, out from under their professors' watchful eyes, and Jake didn't see a grownup in sight.

He had realized, somewhere upon their journey, that it was a ghostly cat that they were following. He hadn't even known a cat could be a ghost. Did that mean it had died...? Ruka called it an adventure - but this wasn't like playing with Tiger. It wasn't just any cat...Jake had never seen a cat ghost before. Was it even a real cat at all...? In the Halloween atmosphere, this seemed like something a whole lot scarier. Jake's eyes went to look at his companions. They still weren't scared...he could hear it in their voices. Ruka's calm made its impression on him, but though Jack and Ruka were able to hold his worst feelings at bay, the creeping anxiety was starting to take its toll on the boy, as he sat on the broom in an uneasy silence. He liked going on pretend adventures, using your imagination when you were really safe. This was a real adventure, and Jake thought it was a lot more than he was ready for.

They soon arrived, at a painting...Being up on the broom gave Jake a closer view of what he might not have been able to see above the other kids. There on the wall was a man lying in a pool of red stuff that just had to be blood. It wasn't a painting Jake had ever seen before, or one he wanted to have ever seen. He closed his eyes and looked away. Why would anybody ever draw something like that? The paintings at Hogwarts didn't seem like art. It was more than that. They moved, talked, knew you. They were people. Why would anybody ever draw one hurt or...dying...or...dead?

When Jake opened his eyes again, he noticed the girl again who had followed them from the Masquerade. She said she loved his costume, and called him Mr. Frog.

"Thank you..."
Jake mumbled shyly, giving the girl a small wave. For a moment he had almost forgotten he was wearing it. He blushed beneath the frog head.

She smiled too, and Jake took one more look at her face, and the way the back of Ruka's head was still with focus."Ruka---" Jake mumbled, putting a hand on the Gryffindor's bare shoulder. "Um, I mean Tinkerbell...are you sure it's ok....? M-Maybe we should go get a grownup..." he suggested weakly. Jake already knew how the other kids took suggestions like that though. They never wanted to get a grownup, and he didn't know why. Nobody ever said that was a good idea. He didn't think Ruka and Jack were going to be any different, especially not tonight - the only grownups in Neverland were pirates.

~Before the portrait~

Kara was still glaring at the moon girl, who was now looking up at her, boy was it a good day to be really tall.

"Okay... Well, if it's not organized, answer me this!" The moon girl reached into her costume, and pulled out some candy "If it's not the teachers, then why did I - and like, everyone else- coincidentally find sweets scattered all over the floor?"

"Do you really think I'm that much of a dumbass?" Kara deadpanned, staring at the girl with an emotionless expression. "That's what we've been trying to figure out for the past ten minutes!"

"Death?!" Cassie had said in disbelief "This is a school!"

"Yeah, but sadly it isn't that safe, or normal...even for a school of magic." She sighed, watching as Cassie started to mutter in a foreign language she herself didn't recognize.

She crossed her arms and walked away towards Henry.

"Thanks for saying something, my anxiety keeps me from saying those things but I'm glad someone did since your right, this really isn't a game and dangerous stuff could happen tonight. Sometimes I wish others would see that to," Henry smiled at Kara softly, to which she dipped her head.

"If no one was going to do it, it was going to be me. She's going to have to learn about the real world one day, why not now?" She stated.

After the mention of Hanako, Henry leaned into her ear and stated "So what your saying is I should definitely introduced him to my cat."

She laughed, nodding her head.

"Definitely."

~At the portrait~

Kara was still crouched down in front of Star, trying to get the cat to come to her, but her right arm was getting tired, so she switched it out with her left.

She heard a few people put their impute on the symbol after Henry had announced it for her.

"A wand and a bone?! You sure?!" Cassie had started, she sounded distressed.

"Yes, I am sure of what I saw." Kara said.

"Oh heck no! The Beauxbatons symbol - that's two wands crossed! What if- What if-" Cassie's words trailed off, then she left to go talk to some other kid.

“A wand and a bone crossed? I’ll ask 'em.” A boy with black hair had said, pointing to the other paintings, and then he strode off, not before Kara called a quick "thank you" to him.

As she turned her head around, still searching for clues of any sorts, a girl had raised her hand. But why, they weren't in a classroom?

She cleared her throat, then said "Yes?"

"The, uh, the crossed wand and bone is the symbol of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. The emblem is located on the left chest of their robes, which are green,"

She quickly stood up, looking at the girl in surprise, since she was no longer wearing her mask, her excitement could be seen.

"Wait, really! That's perfect, you're brilliant kid!" She exclaimed walking towards the girl, but still giving her personal space.

"Um, why?" The girl had placed her hand on the back of her neck sheepishly.

"We've been needing the answer, you found it!" She said, she then turned to the group.

"Maybe the ghost's name is the founder of St. Mungos. So his name would be Mungo Bonham! Someone call it out for me, I have an idea."

She walked over to Henry, then lowered her voice so only he could hear.

"I had mentioned earlier that it is possible that Star is a messenger patronus, so maybe instead of listening, we have to touch the cat, and then the message will be revealed."

She got away to Star, and kneeled down in front of her. She took out her hand, and then pet the cats head, only her fingers and palm making contact with the cat's head.

In her head, only one thought went through it.

"Please let this work!"

As the crowd kept pushing in and she still couldn't find Percival, Opeila got worried. Was this meant to happen? Did someone separate them on purpose? Was Percival okay? Did he trip in the crowd and they were walking over him?
No, he was fine. She could see him a few moments later, he made his way towards her, his hand slightly raising. "Hey...", she answered before looking at the students again. "What do you think was that about?"

Opeila held out her hand to him. "We should stay together. I'm not sure if this is a joke or not." Her right hand pulled her wand out of her skirt pocket. "Better be prepared, I guess." Wether he took her hand or not, Opeila would keep following the cat until they reached the painting. They had passed the rehearsal room and a few more students joined the group that was following the cat. Opeila's eyes visibly widened under the mask, when she saw what the paining showed. A man lying in a puddle of blood. His own...? "What in the world...?", she gasped, instinctively stepping backwards, when he held out a hand towards him. For a moment she saw Victor again, his face when he said that he was released, before he bled to death.

The Slytherin had to turn away her face, take a deep breath. This was a painting. Only a painting. It was all okay. Everyone was fine.
When she turned her head, she met the gaze of her duelling captain, Dmitri Jones. It was almost like... Did he want her to come over? She hesitated. Should she leave Percival alone to hear what the fourth year had to tell? No. She had only a moment ago told her boyfriend that it would be best to stay together. "Jones wants the duellists over, I think...", she murmured. "Maybe he knows something, we should at least listen to what he has to tell."

And what he had to tell was interesting. Opeila knew the symbol. She had seen it before multiple times. "Are you sure? That's odd. It's the symbol of the [Dmitri knows what]. But why...?" Her gaze wandered to the injured man on the painting again. "We should find the rider I guess.", she murmured.

Dan was so.... utterly confused. Apparently they were on some scavenger hunt, and some murdered guy in a painting had a clue? Or maybe he WAS the clue... His curiosity had gotten the better of him, and now he was stuck in a scenario where he had no idea what was going on. He had hoped this would be fun, and maybe it would be later. But right now, Dan was just lost and confused as to what was going on. If he had to compare this to anything, it would be like joining a role play thread that was already in progress and had WAY too much to read. So much so that Dan would be willing to bet that no one in his position could be arsed to read it all.

Not that Dan joined a role play thread, or anything.

"Alright ah, would anyone care to inform me what the hell's goin' on? And if this is a scavenger hunt, maybe the dead guy in the painting IS the clue? Instead of just havin' it?"

At least he had Andy with him. Andy being there made any situation better. But he couldn't shake the feeling that he was the only person in the group to not know what was going on...

Scarlett could only stare at the sweets Tina had produced in shock. It couldn't be a coincidence - first Kara, then her, then Tina? Something was afoot. As she peered closer, she could see a sherbet lemon clasped in Tina's hand. The first-year then ate it. "I found a few sweets as well...the exact same in fact," said Scarlett looking at the spot where Tina's sherbet lemon had been. "Obviously I ate mine." Scarlett gave a knowing grin towards Tina.

Some moments later, people were gathering round the painting. Scarlett could hear Cassie angrily shouting - perhaps in a sort of fierce pity - and threatening the attacker of the poor guy. Scarlett gave her a lopsided smile, nodding along. "Rip em off the walls, throw em in the bin and set the bin on fire," she cracked.

All of a sudden, she heard a familiar voice in a not-so-familiar tone. The voice was Cash Ironwoods for sure, a friend of hers by now (or so she hoped). But the tone was rather harsh. Did they really just call Scarlett daft? Sure, she seemed to prioritise strength over intelligence but she wasn't - she wasn't dumb or anything!

Scarlett whirled around, letting Cassie finish her defence monologue (yay, still best friends) before pursing her lips and casting an ever-so-slightly scornful look at Cash. Sure, they insulted her, but they were her friend and she couldn't be getting mad at friends every time they called her daft. Daft. The thought made Scarlett want to hurl. "Why do you stick to the searching?" asked Scarlett coolly, quirking her eyebrows. "No need for that, don't you think?" She turned back to Cassie, gesturing her to join Scarlett in her attempt to get some answers out of the bloodied guy in the portrait.
