Selim had snuck out yet again.

It was like every other time he had snuck out past curfew without being caught, he stuck to the shadows, kept his steps quiet, and kept his senses alert.

He partially broke these rules so he could figure out the layout of Hogwarts more quickly. The castle was massive, and there were so many nooks and crannies in the blasted stone structure, that the raven honestly doubted students would know the place perfectly even if they had been there seven years!

That was his excuse, anyway.

The truth was, sometimes the boy couldn't stand being near other humans, even if there were layers of walls between him and them. Sometimes, his paranoia would make him jittery and tense, to the point that the common room wasn't enough, wasn't enough to protect him from his dangerous fear that tore at his mind like a rabid wolf.

And when those moments made themselves known, not even the warnings of logical, intelligent professors would keep him from running as far away from civilization as possible.

Because sometimes, the hallucinations and voices that haunted him were better company than the unpredictability of his own kind.

He hated it, hated the fear. The fear was what made him kill Victor, the fear was what kept him awake through the long nights of winter, the fear was what kept him from feeling human. It was always there, and it was his worst personal demon.

So, he did the only thing he could, he tried to find places to hide from it all, from his peers and professors.

The abandoned classroom he found last year was pointless, Jack knew it existed, knew he sometimes hid there, and that was enough for him to never use it again.

So he expanded his search, stretched it into the dark dungeons that students often avoided because sometimes, the shadows down there seemed to be alive, seemed to breathe with their own sense of being.

But that wasn't enough to scare Selim away, because at that point, if shadows didn't seem to pulse with life, Selim would think something was wrong with the world around him. Breathing shadows was normal for a boy who saw things that weren't real every other day.

Not that anyone noticed his seeming mental instability, he was good at hiding that weakness, the assassins of the Faust Clan's enemies would never see him break down this year... not at all.

That was his New Years goal, he supposed. Don't have breaks from reality.

Oh boy...

The raven-haired child walked through the dark hallway at an even pace, eyes glinting in the dim light, fingers twitching every time he heard water drop from the damp, mossy stones that made up the grungy corridor. Somehow, mist slithered across the cold floor, swirling with every step the boy took. Dust motes were made known to the blue light he held in his hand, and occasionally, he watched the particles dance hypnotically.

The air was still, and stale. It tasted like decay, and of forgotten pasts.

To most, it would be eerily silent. To Selim, the whispers still caressed his ears and slithered through his mind, the slimy tendrils of his spirit's sickness.

If anyone could see the twelve-year-old's soul, they would observe a humanoid figure, swirling with shadows, with black tendrils stretching down from his mind to almost every inch of his body, coiling what was left of the last bits of innocence, and slowly smothering it. A walking blight (Hags would likely find him rather unappetizing, but what did he know of the elusive creatures?)

He held his wand in one hand, the finicky thing actually working for once, and casting a dim Lumos. He didn't necessarily need it, having practiced traversing unfamiliar terrain blind in his seventh year of being taught the Faust Clan skills, but he also needed to practice actually using his wand... his father had warned him that if he slacked off in that area there would be... consiquences.

So, with great reluctance, he used his wand, the cherrywood stick still hating every moment of it.

Honestly, cherrywood, sometimes he wondered if that had been on purpose.

He was ready to use Nox at a moment's notice though, if he heard the footsteps of those that patrol the dark passageways of Hogwarts.

He doubted he'd be caught, he hadn't before, but perhaps that had been his only hint of luck during his first year of Hogwarts (Because, frankly, the rest of that year had been hell on earth.)

As it so happened, a source of patrolling footsteps seemed to be too busy making noise and flashes of light of their own to bother with noticing those already made by the anxious student. A girl with black, wild pigtails and long hair that trailed down her back was humming to herself, taking pictures along the dungeon with an old-fashioned instant camera. She wore a gleeful smile on her face as she went along, pausing every few minutes to snap a picture here or there. It almost seemed to be at random.

After waiting for one of her pictures to develop under the light of a torch, however, the girl paused in her humming. Was that...the edge of a robe showing in that photo? Blinking perplexedly, she stuffed the picture into her own robe pocket and started taking a series of bright flash photography in a semi-circle around her, staying under the light of the torch so that if anyone dared approach her, they would risk being illuminated.

She picked up her photos as they fell to the floor, fanning them out in her hands to try to see if she could catch any new glimpses of whomever she had managed to capture a part of the first time. The photos were still developing, however, so she squinted into the darkness ahead and took a deep breath, opening her mouth.

"Hellooooo~!" she called in a sing-songy voice, one hand partially cupped over her mouth. "Miss Hag Ladies? Are you there? I wanted to talk to you!"

When Selim did hear footsteps he immediately put out the light at the tip of his wand. For a few moments, he stood in the dark, letting his amber eyes adjust to the sudden lack of light. Unfortunately, just as that happened, a bright flash of light blinded him, and he ducked away to the side of the corridor on instinct, plain, black hooded cloak coiling around him with the effort.

In his rush, his bare toes knocked away a pebble, and it rattled to the other side of the grungy hallway. Letting out a near-inaudible hiss of annoyance, he ducked behind a pillar, just in time to avoid being fully blinded by a quick succession of piercing white flashes, accompanied by the clicks of a device that Selim thought wasn't allowed to be here.

As his eyes adjusted again, he heard the call of a girl. His brow furrowed, but he remained crouched behind the pillar. Peering out subtly from behind the damp stone caused him to catch sight of the perpetrator of his blindness. A girl, squatting under a torch, a ring of developing photographs around her, barely developing.

Did those need a red room to develop nicely? Or was Selim just mixing up two types of cameras?

No matter, he wasn't about to let down his guard. In fact, the strange girl's appearance made him all the more tense, and paranoid.

He clutched his chopsticks, just cleaned from his use of them during dinner. His tight grip was more for a desperate feeling of calm given by holding them, more than his idea to use them against another maybe-student who hadn't yet provoked his instinct of 'fight'.

He watched her, slitted yellow eyes narrowed, perhaps only barely glinting in the torchlight.

The girl had called for hags, so she either had a suicide wish or was a teacher disguising themselves as a student for bait. Selim preferred the latter idea to the former.

He shifted slightly as the girl seemed to wait for those photos to develop, the bandages wrapped around the soles of his feet shifting comfortably with the movement. The hair on the back of his neck was prickling with unease, and his gaze darted around the corridor, watching the shadows seem to shift and slither like so many pitch snakes.

He didn't like her, she made him feel nauseated. He didn't know if that was just his crippling terror, or his gut instinct screaming at him to get the hell out of dodge.

He could run, but if his shaky theory was correct, and this really was a professor, then there was no use. He may outstrip most of the student body in physical fitness (Not health though, that idea was laughable), but the difference between a twelve-year-old child and an adult was the size of a gaping canyon.

He doubted he could outlast an adult with full hours of rest behind them.

So he hid, his dark cloak shrouding his thin, pale form, face hidden in the cowl of the garment.

He didn't trust the girl.

But he also didn't know if he could get away from her.

When no one answered her call, the girl sighed and let her camera fall to her chest where it dangled from the strap around her shoulders and neck. She stuck her hand in her pocket to drop her photos into it before placing her hand over the handle of her wand which also lay within. Then she began feeling her way through the darkness with her free hand, stepping away from the torchlight to venture back into the shadows toward where she had thought she'd seen the flutter of movement last.

"I just want to talk," she insisted. "No need to be shy! Unless...you're not hags?" The girl blinked. Then she beamed.

"Aww...are you camera-shy? There's no need to be! Candid photos are my favorite!" There was still no answer; no verbal kind, anyway. At last, she frowned slightly. This was getting to be tiresome; boring. She obviously knew someone was there and they must have known she knew, so what were they keeping up this silly game for?

"Hmm...well, if you don't want to come out, I guess you want to play hide-and-seek? " Her voice was sing-songy as she seemed to try to brighten back up. Just as she reached the pillar she thought she'd seen someone disappear behind, she drew out her wand and aimed it into the dark, calling, "Immobulus!"

His eyes widened as she drew closer, chatting. His gut recoiled into his chest, and his form tensed. His eyes had adjusted just enough to the dim light for him to see the girl raise her arm mouth opening to form a word he recognized as one Jack had used against him.

This time though, he had worse memories tied to the spell.

Heart leaping desperately into his throat, he dodged just in time for the bolt of the spell to miss his cloak by less than a centimeter. If the maybe-student was actually a maybe-professor, then they were having a very off night.

Selim's breaths became erratic after he got up from his clumsy, hasty roll across the damp stone, surprised he had managed to dodge the attack. Spots danced across his vision as he stumbled away to the opposite wall, and ignored the situation in favor of trying to chase away his hyperventilation, an action that was all-too-familiar.

After getting his breathing to calm, lowering to almost-manageable levels, his head shot up so he could get a lock on the maybe-girl who had decided to resort to excessive measures just to 'talk'.

His form was shaking with pent-up anxiety, skin long since having gone clammy, and pasty even before the 'patroller' had shown her unfamiliar face.

His hands trembled as they gripped around the slim metal needles he called chopsticks, even as his mind ran with half-baked plans of escape. Afew darker ideas of eliminating the threat that echoed out from one of the voices, one of the mask he wore.

Otou-sama would be disappointed. one of the voices whispered, the harsh, cruel one that Selim only brought out once since he had acquired it.

[He still remembered their screams, he still remembered his father's approving gaze, he still felt unclean.]

He swallowed dryly, mouth opening, as if to speak, before clamping shut. His stress continued to build, he was surprised his muscles hadn't torn and begun to leak out the negative feeling of being suffocated.

He opened his mouth again and spoke, voice tense, wavering, hiding undertones of fear. "Who are you?"

He felt like he was dying, but that was nothing new, these dark, damp dungeons brought up memories of pain. Yet somehow, he had retreated to them despite that.

Perhaps his fear of himself was greater.

"Hmm?"

When her target appeared to evade her spell with a dodge roll, the girl tapped her chin thoughtfully with the end of her wand and began to walk closer.

"Aw, come on," she said in dejected tones, pouting as she took step by step. Evidently, she was in no hurry. "What's the point of hiding if I know you're there?" Maybe they just didn't want her to get a look at their face? To hear their voice? Raising a brow, she tried to puzzle out why whomever it was seemed to be breathing so hard, but still they wouldn't speak.

Eventually, however, the figure seemed to finally summon the courage to ask who the girl was. Pleased, she smiled sweetly and neatly stuck her wand back into her pocket.

"Eris Livius!" she answered with relish. "I'm looking for hags. And who might you be? Are you looking for them, too?"

Unaware of the full extent of the Slytherin boy's mental or emotional state, she clasped her hands behind her back and leaned forward to try to peer around the wall where she'd seen him roll behind. "Or...are you a hag in disguise?"

At that, her nimble fingers went up to wrap instinctively around her camera, as if itching to take more pictures with the cherished device.

The girl spoke, asking why he hid if she knew he was there. To him, the answer was simple.

He was scared.

When animals are scared, they run, fight, or as a last resort, hide.

It was a simple, primal reaction, born from his instincts which seemed to be taking him over ever so slowly, day by day. The girl scared him, his surroundings scared him, and his mind scared him. He was scared, always scared, that is why he was exhausted.

So yes, he hid, he hid from the strange girl who took photos without permission and felt so fake, fake, fake, fake. She felt fake like how his mother's smile felt fake, like how his smile was always fake, like how the sense of security his family tried to give him felt fake.

She felt fake, she felt like the lies that always slid off his tongue like a second nature, and he hated and feared that fakeness.

Because if you fake something long enough, it becomes a part of you.

His hands twitched erratically until his nails met skin and he began to scratch at his own flesh, trying to get rid of how tight and uncomfortable it always felt on him.

A slight tang of copper filled the air.

He swallowed dryly, moving to a different area of skin, forearms, they ere tougher. His scars had begun to itch with the crawling sensation that glided across his skin from the shadowy tendrils grasping at him.

He spoke to her, why did he speak? Why did he dare let his tongue do as it wished? He ought to bite it off, you know, but he never did, because it would remind him.

Looking for hags she said.

Just like he thought, a student was looking for hags, the hags that made a few select peers of his slowly degrade from their humanity to inhumanity.

Like cats if left without human interaction for too long. They go feral, so do humans.

His tongue itched.

She asked if he was a hag, no, he wasn't, sometimes he thought he was worse, but he probably wasn't.

Though, he couldn't tell sometimes if the Cruel One was a mask or his true character. It made him wonder, did hags experiment too? Maybe in their own, twisted little ways.

Spiders seemed to creep along the back of his neck.

This felt wrong, wrong, wrong.

"M'not." He responded, tongue betraying him yet again. Even his grammar was faltering in the feeling of wrongness. He felt like vomiting. Memories flashed in his mind, making his gut churn as his masks retreated into the depths of his twisted mind.

Maybe he was going feral too. The hags didn't need to help with that, his blighted, distorted soul probably wasn't an appetizing sight.

He moved to another spot, the last one felt warm with red. The slight smell of blood felt like it was choking him.

The skin was peeling away again, showing what lies beneath. He looked blankly at his arm, the gashes leaked shadows, joining the others twisting about his legs.

"Leave me alone." He hissed, feeling irrational defensiveness arise, transforming into unstable aggression. "Go find your hags, actor."

His clawing grew rougher, shredding the rice parchment that covered his deceased body. Anxiety makes you do things like that, causing pain to ground you in reality, or what little of it is left.

The hallways of the dungeons stretched unnaturally in either direction, the walls were alive, closing in on him. He felt like he was suffocating, but he forced himself to breathe.

Bile churned in his throat, his vision blurred slightly with unbidden saltwater.

'Leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave, leave-'

Though the girl's fingers twitched on the camera, the quiet, single syllable of a reply caused her to stop cold. She listened, her smile faultering. Something was wrong; more wrong than she'd originally thought. When he called her an actor, her smile dropped altogether. Her hands fell to her sides and she walked slowly around one of the other pillars. While behind it, her appearance must have changed, because when she walked out the other side, her clothes were the same but her looks were slightly different; a new girl. She stepped slowly and carefully into the open where he could see her in plain sight even if she still couldn't necessarily see him.

"I'm afraid I can't leave you alone," she spoke softly in a new girl's voice, trying to use soothing tones as her voice took on the calming qualities of running water, like a little burbling brook or stream. Bright blue eyes sought him out in the dark. "But neither am I here to hurt you."

Slowly, very slowly, she began to seat herself down on the cold stone floor, crossing her legs in the casual manner of a relaxed child. "Call me Kit. I'm the Hogwarts Castle Caretaker. You know you're not supposed to be out here this late at night, don't you?" Her brows steepled in concern. "Is something the matter? What's wrong?"

She tilted her head, peering into the shadows. "Won't you please come out...?"

Selim was wheezing quietly, lungs unable to keep up with his rapid panic. His body jerked and twitched as if he were trying to remove hands touching him without his permission. He slid slowly to the floor, curling into a defensive ball as he stared at nothing with wide eyes and panting breaths.

Nails dug into flesh, he hated it, he couldn't stop. It was like the fight club, he couldn't stop himself there either, he couldn't stop himself from snuffing out the flame of another.

His mouth clamped shut with a clacking sound, and he swallowed dryly, trying to take deeper breaths.

He could hear the blood rushing in his ears, even as he instinctively jerked away from the sound of footsteps. Eyes darting up from beyond his crossed arms, he saw another girl- no- the same one.

They changed, why did they keep changing. Unpredictable, too unpredictable. Selim hated unknowns.

His scratching paused, shifting to just clenching at his arms, ignoring the added sound of red dripping into water rhythmically from fresh wounds.

She spoke.

He didn't like what she said, but perhaps if his state of mind were different, he would've appreciated the honesty. Honestly was rarer than diamonds these days.

A shuddering breath, this was an adult, in a child's body.

That line of thought made him want to vomit, but he fought against it this time.

His eyes slid shut as he tried to focus on words.

The first question was pointless, the next three he could barely formulate responses to. His mind was a loop of anxiety and paranoia, and the whispers seemed to coil down his spine and squirm through his body like unwanted parasites.

The 'girl' didn't get a response, Selim was too busy panicking over the thought of an adult having found him. He curled tighter, his thin frame folding into itself like a turtle retreating into a shell. He feared adults, they always, always had more secrets than children, they almost always spoke murmured lies to children.

Children were far more predictable than adults. He avoided all but the bare minimum interactions with the faculty for a reason.

The boy shook like a leaf, remaining in the shadows.

At least in the shadows, he knew what demons to expect.

The girl watched the boy slide to the floor, recognizing his trembling body language as he pulled his knees up to his chest while staring absently into space. She saw his tensed muscles, tight jaw, rapidly-breathing chest, and she sighed, trying to think. The glimpse of what she might have thought was blood seemed to cause her brow to furrow slightly, but she refused to panic just yet. The first thing to focus on was to how to calm the boy down. Superficial wounds could be taken care of later.

Eventually, she muttered something to herself. She didn't speak loud enough to make sure the Slytherin boy heard, but she didn't particularly try to quiet her volume enough to keep him from hearing, either.

"He doesn't want to talk to me. You try talking to him."

All of a sudden, the girl's frown was much more prominent; petulent. Her voice instantly went from calm to high with irritation as she quietly snapped back, as if arguing with some invisible person, "What makes you think he'll want to talk to me? Aren't you the caretaker?"

Her gaze was distant like black-haired boy's, appearing to stare at nothing, but eventually she sighed and focused it back on the student before her.

"I'm Tymiko," she said, speaking with the mild annoyance of a child being forced to have a playdate with a stranger simply because they were around the same age. "You can call me 'Ty' for short. Kit would talk to you in his own shape, but since these are the only clothes we have right now, he'd be too big to wear them if he tried to change form. That's why we have to stay like this until we get back to his office."

She seemed to hold no concern or pity for him as she got up off the floor and headed his way with the certain, unguarded steps of a brazen child her age; too sure of herself and perhaps too impatient to be cautious. Once she stood before him, she held out a hand expectantly.

"I know what it's like to not want to sleep for fear of nightmares," she said finally with a slightly softer tone. "But at the very least, come with me. This place is dangerous and if nothing else, you'll be safe in Kit's office until you're ready to go back to your dorm. Don't act dumb just 'cause you're scared."

Her extended hand faltered and she raised a brow. "Or am I going to have to drag you out of here myself?" She assessed his curled-up form which he'd made even smaller. "Maybe even roll you if you stay that way."
