History/Background Story: The Ashmole family is one of the oldest and wealthiest Muggle families in their county but a series of bad business ventures by the late Lord Ashmole, Earl of Corsham, has put a strain in the family coffers. To avoid further financial ruin, the Dowager Countess arranged to have her only son, now the Earl of Corsham, to marry the daughter of a wealthy financier from London.

The first child of this marriage is Anne Elizabeth Ashmole, born on the 24th of January. She was followed by four more siblings - twin girls and two younger boys. On the outside, they look like the perfect English aristocratic family. The Earl and his wife were frequent fixtures on the society pages. The Earl is an avid polo player and his wife is a darling on the society circuit. Their children also delighted everyone they met. People particularly liked the little Lady Anne, whose dark hair and solemn looks is a strong contrast to her family full of blondes and cherubic faces.

However, not everything was as it seemed. Though the dowry and continued financial support of Anne's mother kept the Ashmole estate alive, there is still a long way to go before it becomes a lucrative property. The Earl is frequently on travels to help raise funds and businesses for the land. Her mother on the other hand grew up enjoying the London social life and so was often away from her children as motherhood and the country life did not suit her. Anne's childhood is characterized by a succession of different nannies and the sound of the car carrying her parents away. She was assured by various nannies that her parents did love her and they only do this to keep them living a comfortable life.

When her parents were not away, Anne had a very stiff relationship with them. They never got angry or scolded her, but there was a gap she felt between her parents and herself. In particular, her father would often question what she did and why she did it. There was a sternness to his talks with Anne, always reminding her to do the right thing. Anne took it to heart but often wondered if she had ever done anything wrong to always get that advise from her father. Her mother on the other hand was dismissive of anything she does. "Do whatever you want," was something her mother often said.

Perhaps due to the coldness of her relationship with her parents, Anne simply adored her siblings, and they in turn loved her back. Anne was 4 years old when her twin sisters were born. Anne was at first cautious of having siblings; she felt that she never had enough attention from her parents and having siblings will surely lessen the little attention she gets. But when her twin sisters arrived from the hospital, something in her heart made her change her attitude. They were so cute and tiny and helpless, and the moment a nanny came to take care of them, her mother left the twins and stayed in her room for the whole week. Anne decided then that if her parents were not going to take care of her siblings, she will.

This was also the first time Anne did accidental magic. To make her sisters laugh, she would often use puppets and stuffed animals to tell stories she made up. She would sometimes make these toys tumble and jump by thinking very hard and that delighted the twins. It did not happen often but a few nannies did see the toys move. Some of the more superstitious nannies believed it was due to a ghost living in the Ashmole estate and soon quit thereafter. As two more boys, joined their brood, Anne became a bit more lively thanks to her siblings. They were a source of comfort to each other even if their parents had very little to do with their lives.

However, as the rumours of the Ashmole ghost became widespread and nannies became harder to hire, her parents decided to send Anne and her siblings to boarding school. She loathed the idea as it would take her away from her siblings, but she did not protest as not to upset her family further. She kept to herself mostly at school and counted the days till she can come home to her siblings. She made herself busy with schoolwork and did well on most subjects. She was a bright student though quiet. The few friends she made were those of a similar disposition as her.

Her Hogwarts letter came the summer she was about to confirm a place for a secondary school in London. She was in the fields with her siblings when the Hogwarts owl landed beside her carrying the acceptance letter. It was a miracle her parents were at home that week as they were usually away in the summer. The Deputy Headmistress came two days later to inform her family of her place in Hogwarts. Her siblings were delighted to find out her tricks were actual magic. Her parents were horrified, in particular her mother.

That night, Anne found out the truth. Her real father was not the Earl of Corsham but a man her mother had taken on as a lover. Her mother was not sure who the man was, as it was a short-lived affair. Her mother admitted to not being in love with the Earl of Corsham. When Anne's mother found out about her engagement arranged by her father, she rebelled by taking on a lover from a rather bohemian set in London. It ended quickly as the man had a very odd lifestyle and it was something Anne's mother did not quite understand. When she found she was pregnant, she turned to the Earl of Corsham who begrudgingly agreed to still marry her. And though her other siblings were indeed the Earl's as they did try to patch things up, the marriage was all but in name now. The reason they were always away was that they had separate lives to live, though Anne's mother assured her that there were no other families involved as that was one the "agreements".

Anne decided then and there to accept her place in Hogwarts. Whatever title or life she had as the daughter of an earl was a lie and something she was not entitled to. She had to succeed all on her own and try her best to protect her siblings, as it was obvious her parents were not ready to take on the responsibility. She would use all her magical abilities to create the best life for herself and prove that she was worthy all on her account.
