[font=PT Sans]Hanako hasn’t grown up with the best idea of birthdays. His butler refused to reveal his birthday seeing it as irrelevant to his job. His siblings scorned a celebration as they saw it as a year closer to their deaths. His parents had never been present and his birthday was the worst day of the year. The only birthday he had celebrated was his grandmother’s and even that wasn’t any special. Even if it was only a visit and chat over tea, Hanako was confident to say that they were more than content with just each other’s presence. Unfortunately, his presence around her was not the same when it came to others. In addition, he’s a terrible gift-giver, and previously remembering birthdays were a bore to remember.

Last year, anything related to birthdays, he did not participate. It was hard to do so when there were not many that deserved to have him remember them. Alas, time had changed drastically over the year and now he had someone to not despise or push in the great lake. A lad by the name of Percival Rainwood. For weeks, Hanako had been making himself dizzy just thinking about giving him a birthday present in disguise of an extra nap. The plan was to give him a gift without having it traced back to him. But Hanako! Why would you let Percival think you forgot his birthday? Wouldn’t it keep you two closer if you publicly show him your appreciation? Well, that’s because he’s ultimately terrified of the thought of Percival knowing he had gotten a gift from him. Showing himself as a character that actually cared, an old rooted habit he had yet to change. He wasn’t ready to show Percival the things he had gone through for him. The how-to-be-a-decent-person class with Dee, the internal struggles, the change in the way he communicated, the easily fired up jealous tendencies , who would want to suddenly be dumped with all that? At least, to Hanako, it looked frightening.

On the day of Percival’s birthday, he had rushed earlier to breakfast alone and stopped at the owlery. At a certain time in the morning, hundred of owls would swoop down the Great Hall and deliver every parcel, letter, and gifts to the receiver. Deciding to use that precious moment to tie his gift to an owl, he hastily rushed to do so just to run back to the Great Hall before the owls came in. Fortunately for him, he came back just in time. The bad news is that he looked ready to drop dead. Clothes that were neat and tidy in the morning had become lightly drenched in sweat with a loose tie hung around his head carelessly. Hanako was never one with the best stamina nor one that appeared in a less than tidy appearance. ( It’s the perfectionist in him ) He heaved, struggling to catch him breathe as he took slow strides towards the usual table where Percival and him had always sat. Without any word, he carelessly slumped down on the seat next to his possession without a word. With only the glee of completing his task, he buried his head in his folded arms on the table and continued to steady his breathing pattern.

If Percival had asked what happened, or if his friend was alright, he would only be replied with a mutter of words: “ chased..girls.. pretty problems ”. What it meant was up to Percival to decipher.

Hanako didn’t matter much at the moment. What’s important is the owl that’ll be swooping in very soon. A school owl would fly over the two boys and drop a small brown parcel tied neatly with rope. Fully secured from the rope, a small square-shaped letter was trapped between the rope and the parcel. Nothing about the weird package was special, Hanako made sure of that. Once the rope was untied and the letter was opened, a vague piece of hard paper would be seen inside.

And that was all it said. Not a greeting, not a name of a sender. Just a girly handwriting and nothing on the back. If the letter hasn’t spooked him yet, inside the unwrapped parcel would be a little hand-held sized box. Opened, and there would be an odd contraption in the eyes of a wizard who had never grown up in a muggle community. A plain lighter meant to burn just a little spark of fire. Enough to show a face in a room shrouded in darkness. Percival’s reaction to this anonymous gift would only be heard by the Japanese boy, whom’s nervousness was hidden as well as his face was. The thought of him not liking it had worried the boy but that was another good thing about his anonymous gift. If he liked it, he would not respond. If he didn’t like it, he would not respond. Od course, that depends if Percival had decided to disturbed the obviously exhausted boy in the first place.

‘Happy Birthday, Percival Rainwood’, Hana thought inside his head with a smile.

ooc note: Since Percival probably knows Hana's handwriting, the handwriting on the note had extra delicate strokes and lines to appear like effort had been put into the writing. And putting in effort was not something on Hana's dictionary. ; )

Percival walked down to the Great Hall by himself. The boy was clearly in a good mood. His surprise treat had sweetened his mood, where even walking alone did not damper his mood. Hanako, the one he usually would walk down with, had been long gone by the time the boy had gotten around to pulling himself out of bed. Though he didn't hold it against the other, seeing how he had gotten up later than he normally did. It only made sense for Hanako to go on without him.

He had sacrificed walking with someone in order to sleep in. Which in all truth had not been hard to do. Percival could not help but be surprised that Hanako hadn't slept in as well. The other was notoriously known for having trouble waking up in the morning and staying awake for that matter. He wondered what had been so pressing that the other had willingly gotten up by themselves. While it was his birthday, Percival doubted that would be the reason for Hanako's change in his usual patterns. The boy's steps faltered as his mind wandered. 'Could it be a girl?' he thought to himself. Percival stopped in the middle of the empty hall. That particular thought made him feel strangely hollow and he wondered why. He didn't have any reason to feel like this, but his heart ached as he threw aside the weird feelings and continued forward.

The boy walked in the hall making his way over to the Slytherin table with ease. Though confusion would make Percival's face furrow as he looked at the empty bench he and Hanako would sit at. Percival could not help but wonder where the other was. The boy had been so sure that Hanako would still be at breakfast. Though it appeared as if the other must have already left for classes. Percival slid into his usual seat. Despite the fact that his friend was not there, Percival left room for Hanako to sit down if he were to come back. The boy grabbed a biscuit from a basket as soon as he sat down. Eager to sate his hunger before breakfast time was over. Percival would slather the biscuit in jelly and take a bite just as Hanako materialized out of nowhere.

His gaze turned to his left giving the other a quizzical look as he took in the other's less than perfect appearance. Percival would ask the other what was wrong. Though met with the boy's vague answer, Percival's mind incorrectly deciphered it. Was it possible that Hanako had kissed a girl? It could explain when the boy was messier than usual. As well as explain when the other had not appeared to breakfast before now. This thought was only exemplified by the fact he hadn't gotten a good look at the boy's face.

Percival would have no time to question the boy before a small brown package fell before him. The package barely missed his breakfast. Thankfully, landing off to the side. Percival picked up the package unwrapping the rope that tied the package together. The boy curiously would open the letter looking at the very vague message inside. Another anonymous gift. Though this one had to be from someone else entirely. Seeing as the writing was completely different. Percival would open the package looking at the small object within. The boy would roll the lighter in his hand looking at it from all angles. The object looked fairly muggle and he wondered what the use of it was for. Percival would turn towards Hanako holding the lighter out to the other so that he could see. The boy would spend the rest of the lunch finicking with the lighter trying to figure the object out. Percival's eyes would widen with awe when he was able to create a spark. The boy would stare into the flame as he decided that this was the best birthday he's ever had.
