Upon leaving her dormitory that afternoon, Alina passed through the Hufflepuff Common Room where a muggleborn first year was experiencing Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans for the very first time. "A risk with every mouthful!" another boy quoted the advertisement for the candy as he handed the boy another one to try. It appeared that his first flavor had been a normal one, or at least one he found tasty, because he took this one with no apprehension and popped it into his mouth. It was only a second later that he began coughing.

She left them to their little experiment and headed down the stairs and to the Library, greeting a few portraits along her way. She was going so she could research something for a History of Magic essay but now her mind was focused on something else. Was Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans truly every flavor? Surely they couldn't be! Did that mean that lint and parchment and seawater was also among the flavors? Now she had new research on her mind.

What she found out was that Bertie Bott had invented them by mistake. His original plan was to make a nice sweet but he ended up creating the flavor of dirty sock instead. Flavor range encompassed every flavor imaginable and there was no way of telling without tasting it. Flavors included almond, apple, belly button lint, blueberry, broccoli, candyfloss, chicken, chilli powder, creampuff, dirt, earthworm, envelope glue, fish, grapefruit, gravy, green apple, ham, horseradish, ketchup, lobster, marshmallow, mint, onion, orange, pear, spaghetti, toffee, troll bogey, vanilla ice cream, and watermelon to just name a very small amount.

She then read on to what flavors had been added in different years and it appeared that yes, whatever you could imagine up, there was a flavor for. Cat hair? Yep. Quill ink? You've got it.

She looked up a few more and sure enough, they were there. It began to make her laugh and she ended up laughing so much when she got to shampoo and blanket fuzz that she just couldn't seem to stop. It wasn't her intention to bother anyone around her. Alina tried to get a sip of water from her water bottle before popping a lemon drop into her mouth to try and quiet herself down.

Elzabeth plucked a few books off of the shelf, some of the titles jumping out at her. She had a potions essay to finish by this evening and the lack of sleep from the night before wasn't doing her any good. Sometimes she wondered if the teachers realized how much homework they gave out, it seemed the load of parchment paper got worse as the years went on.

After the first three books, she figured any more books would be overkill so she made her way over to one of the tables. A girl with her head buried in a book was giggling, drawing everyone's attention nearby. She tried her best to calm down by popping a lemon drop into her mouth but the smile remained.

Elzabeth learned her first year that not all of the students cared much for the no talking rule so there was no point in reprimanding them. She figured the girl wasn't going to be too distracting so she plopped down in the chair across from her.

"I hope you don't mind? I can move." Elzabeth bit her cheek. The girl was wearing Hufflepuff robes, there were few students who wore the badger crest that she didn't like so she assumed this girl would be no exception.

When she saw the girl with the stack of books coming her way, the first thing she did was notice the blue and she sighed some. That was enough to break the laughter. Ravenclaws.

Her experience with Ravenclaws from the previous year were not positive ones. She had many of them snap at her for being too loud in the library. They made her feel absolutely inferior with their knowledge, foolish with her creativity, and awful about her grades.

And then there was the time in the study rooms where she got too loud, talking with a friend. These two upperclassmen Ravenclaw girls found her days later, blaming her for a low score upon their OWLs and the result sent Alina to the hospital wing.

She began gathering up her things even before the girl got all the way to the table and at first thought she heard her say something along the lines of if you don't mind, move but no. Alina paused. That's not what this girl said at all.

The girl had sat down across from her at the table and asked if she minded that she sat there and said that she could move. She was being...nice. Odd for a Ravenclaw, at least to Alina Rosier.

"No, I don't mind at all," she said and glanced around the Library. Any time exams or essays were coming due there was an influx of students within the space. Most of them weren't coming just to research candy makers and their mishaps on various kinds of wizarding candies, but she was a girl who liked to investigate mysteries...even if that was just answering her own questions that popped into her head.

Her eyes skimmed over the spine of the books the girl had with her and concluded that she was there to do some research on Potions. Oh that was always the worst! Potions was fun when you were adding ingredients into a cauldron to brew but not so much with all the content and knowledge behind all the reasons as to why something would resonate the way that it did. "Potions, huh?"

Elzabeth wasn't blind, she could tell this other girl was weary of her even if she wasn't sure why. Instead of questioning it, she gave her a tight-lipped smile at her inquiry and nodded.

"Is it just me or has homework gotten worse this year?" Elzabeth didn't remember having nearly this many things she had to worry about her first year. This time around it seemed she was getting less and less sleep as she struggled to give her assignments her all.

Elzabeth noticed the title of her book, that little place in between her eyebrows crinkling. Beans, she was reading about Jelly Beans? How odd, that was defiantly a subject she would never have found herself questioning on her own.

Elzabeth crossed her legs under the table, her mind wandering away from her potions homework for a moment. What exactly were Jelly beans made of? And how were there so many flavors? Was there something magical about Berty Botts or was it just a crazy wizard with some crazy ideas? Elzabeth figured all of those questions could be answered by the book the Hufflepuff was holding but the last thing Elzabeth wanted to do was be a bother to someone already apprehensive of her.

Instead, Elzabeth settled for another smile as she awaited the girl's response.

Hers wasn't homework though. Rather, it was rather silly thoughts that crossed her mind and she didn't like when she didn't know information so there she was. Often her mind would wander to things like these, trivial things that really didn't matter and it often distracted her from the important things they were to be learning.

"Oh it has!" she agreed though. She had a tough time keeping acceptable grades the year before and this year had been so much more difficult. "I want to remind each and every one of the professors that, hello, we are SECOND years, not freaky FIFTH years. I mean honestly," she shook her head.

"I think I was assigned three essays this week. THREE!" And she still had every bit of every one of them to do and was procrastinating at the highest level. Still, it often worked for her. It seemed lots of times, inspiration for writing hit in the early morning hours after she awoke, before the others, and thats when she would get the majority of her assignments done. Most times it was done outside on the grounds or by the Lake just after sunrise but as it began to get colder outside, she might just have to find another place for that.

"I'm Alina, by the way,"
she realized they had yet to introduce themselves to one another. "Alina Rosier."

Elzabeth smiled at her small rant, relating in many ways. It seemed the older she got the more adults expected from her. It was all very overwhelming at times considering she often didn't even trust herself with the smallest of things.
"I'm Alina, by the way,"
"Oh!" Elzabeth realized she had yet to introduce herself to the Hufflepuff. She wasn't always the best at first impressions, at her other school, no one seemed to like her so Elzabeth got used to being guarded when she was introduced to new people. After coming to Hogwarts though, she quickly learned that there wasn't much difference between her and some of the other students. Everyone at Hogwarts was a little 'weird' in their own ways.

"I'm Elzabeth, it's nice to meet you, Alina. I'm not sure we had any classes last year, I can't say I recognize you." Elzabeth shoved her books aside, her attention turned to Alina. Potions could wait a little longer, if anything it was a blessing she had an excuse to hold it off.

Her year was so large it was hard to know everyone, other than her classes she knew more people in her house than people in her grade. Sometimes it was wild to Elzabeth that she had made friends with older kids, she used to idolize them and now they walked the halls together.

"Yeah, the Hufflepuffs don't really seem to have too many classes with the Ravenclaws. I think they tend to stick us with the Slytherins mostly. Maybe we're the buffer zone," she laughed. The perception that the friendly Hufflepuff demeanor helped soften the more agressive Slytherins seemed a little humorous to her.

She watched toward the other end of the library where one of the girls from that Ravenclaw groupthat often gave her a hard time got up and left the library. Whew. One down. It seemed the more she stopped focusing on them, the less eager they were to keep teasing her. If Elzabeth could put aside her Potions for this conversations, she could put aside her bully group. They sucked anyway.

Alina looked down to the book in front of her about candy. "I'm not really like super interested in Bertie Botts," she laughed again. "I just hate when I have a question. It pops into my head and I can't seem to focus on anything else until I've got an answer. I'm a little easily distracted by that. Oy, It's probably a good thing we probably didn't have any classes together or you'd see me at my worst!" Classes were difficult for her. Alina wasn't stupid, she just lacked discipline at times and that focus issue.

"I completely understand. Sometimes I get these odd questions in my head and the only thing I can do to get them out is to find the answer. For instance, last year I started to wonder where the flavor bubblegum came from. It isn't a food or plant, and it doesn't taste like any of those." Elzabeth started to trail off, her mind going back to the very problem.

"It started to consume me to the point where I oweled my dad asking for him to google it and then get back with me." Elzabeth laughed it off, trying to keep her voice at a respectable volume so the librarian wouldn't have to come to hunt them down.

"What is it with those stereotypes anyway?" Elzabeth muttered, thinking back to Alena's point from before.

"I've met plenty of asshole Hufflepuffs." Her eyes widened when she realized what she had said. "I-I mean, not that you are an asshole! I just meant-" Elzabeth was embarrassed and to[/color]ok a moment to breathe before coming back to the sentence.

"I wasn't trying to attack your house, god knows there's plenty of Ravenclaws that have been rubbish to me too. I even met a Griffindor last year that belittled me for my blood status." Elzabeth shook away the memories. Apparently, the very girl had been pulled from the school not too shortly after, whether by choice or by force.

Something that Elzabeth had said caught Alina's attention because it didn't quite make sense to her. She finished hearing her ask about the stereotypes of houses and she wasn't offended by the asshole Hufflpuff comment and even smiled to show so, but she couldn't shake her curiosity.

"Excuse me, but you said that you would owl your father to ask him to...."
she paused, trying to think of the words that this Ravenclaw girl had said so she could finish the statement, but it wasn't coming. "Ask him to goo-what?" That was it, something like that.

Alina was showing her ignorance here of growing up in a magical household. Earlier that Summer, she had visited a muggleborn friend and learned the 'magic' of water balloon fights, trampolines, dishwashers, and cars, and even a little bit about cellphones at least in the sense of texting and taking photos with it. But she hadn't heard of the internet or google and so she was thoroughly confused by the girls' words.

"See, perhaps some stereotypes are more truth...I really couldn't have made it in Ravenclaw," she laughed. Not just because of her lack of muggle things either, but learning came difficult to Alina. It was more the paying attention thing than anything.

Sometimes it slipped Elzabeths mind that other students here hadn't grown up with some muggle influences. She knew she was fortunate to have seen both sides at a very young age. While her father would tell her stories about the magical criminal he had to try and obtain, her mother was there to introduce her to TV, the internet, and all of the other muggle inventions others might not have known.

"Google, its . . . well. . ." Elzabeth thought for a moment, wondering how the hell she could explain such a thing. Then her eyes fell on the thousands of books that lined the shelves.

"It's like a virtual library, you can look up whatever you need and find it almost instantaneously. I honestly wish we could somehow use it here." Elzabeth gestured around her. "It would make my potions essay so much easier." But alas, technology here just simply didn't function, may it be the magic of Hogwarts itself or some spell the headmaster put on the place. It was incredibly frustrating to know there was an easier way to obtain knowledge yet she was being forced to root through hundreds of old books.

Then Elzabeth thought back to what Alina had said before and shrugged. "I suppose there's some truth to everything, there's no way I would have lasted being around Griffindors twenty-four-seven." Just the thought of having to see some of those people every day made Elzabeth frown. It was better she ended up with the housemates she did, her personality seemed more compatible with theirs.
