Haley watched Alina curiously as she read her letter. She felt an uneasiness and discomfort within herself, but she tried to ignore the feeling. She was glad that she could confide in Alina and was infinitely grateful to have a friend like her at that moment.

"Yes, she really is!" Haley had to smile at the thought of her grandmother. Even though she had only met her when she was 5 years old, they have an incredibly close bond to each other. "I will definitely answer her!" Haley nodded in agreement.

Haley didn't know that Alina's mother was dead and felt her belly contract when she heard this. "Oh, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you also get the information you want." Haley felt bad and stupid. How could she have such an inner conflict when, soberly, it was only half as bad. What must Alina think of her who suffers much worse things and Haley complains that she doesn't know enough about her family - at least her parents are still alive and she didn't have a heavy loss. Lost in thought she shook her head and was angry about her behavior.

"All I have left is the information that I once received after a long time of annoying my mother. My mother was the first to be sorted into another house in Hogwarts - Ravenclaw - and thus broke a family tradition. Later she met up with my father, a Muggle, and from then on their paths separated. Until I was 5 years old".

Haley looked anxiously at Alina, she wasn't sure if she simply couldn't see the forest for the trees, but she just couldn't explain all this.

"Things can get complicated when traditions become expectations in families," she said, still not having the insight that Haley needed right now but again, maybe answers would come in time. "The Rosiers have been at Hogwarts for many generations and always sorted into the Slytherin house. Even my twin sister Bella was in Slytherin before she decided to transfer to Beauxbatons. I thought I had been the first but apparently not. My father said that the sorting hat wanted him in Hufflepuff but he convinced it to turn to Slytherin and he felt out of place his entire time at school."

"His mother never forgave him for being with a squib and she had manipulated my mother in ways we didn't know at the time. I guess that's what happens when two rush into a relationship without truly knowing the other person...you don't know when something is normal or something is wrong."

"But in the end we just have to be true to ourselves. We might have their blood within us but they don't define who we are. My father's a decent man despite it all and I admire him for that..." her voice got a little quieter at the end. She did admire him. She loved him. She also just wished he was around more.

But this wasn't about her. It was about trying to support her friend and she glanced off to the Lake before looking back to the redhead. "Just stay with it. It's okay to not have all the answers right now. I still don't have lots of answers to things I'm looking for...like what makes a magical portrait move and talk and express things? How is that different from another non-moving portrait? And..." she paused to think of some other things on her mind, "and I wonder if the Giant Squid likes the name Herman because that's what I decided to name him, at least."

"Oh wow, I never thought you could influence the sorting that much." Haley was surprised that Alina's father could have such a big influence after all, even though, retrospectively, it was not the right decision. "Oh, I'm sorry. Somehow we all have these family stories and pasts, huh?" She was very surprised how same things happened to others and how the stories were similar in some ways.

"Yes, of course you're right, but I guess I'm just impatient." Haley had to laugh, she really is. Sometimes this quality was a blessing but often it was also a curse. "I guess, in time, we'll all get our answers, maybe not all of them, but many." She smiled at Alina and honestly hoped that one day she would also receive her answers.

"Herman!!" Haley laughed out loud, "I think the name is great!" She looked at the lake and imagined the giant squid swimming in the deep and the other creatures greeting him with "Hi Herman". She shook her head briefly at this absurd performance and had to laugh again. "One day we should ask him!" Was that even possible? She asked herself inwardly and quickly realized how insane this suggestion was and started laughing again.

She didn't even notice it at first, but the conversation with Alina had helped her a lot. And she had finally brought her to some other thoughts. "Thank you for listening and being there for me!" she said to Alina and smiled at her.

Alina laughed along with Haley about the name of the Giant Squid. "I think he'd like it well enough. I mean, I was named Alina and my family calls me Lina. I like it I think we all grow into our names as time goes on somewhat."

"Alina Elayne. I think it flows," she said of her first and middle name together. She then looked over to Haley. "Don't you like your name?"

She wondered how parents came up with the names they did for their children and could only imagine how hard it would be. One of the reasons she had yet to purchase a cat was because she didn't know what she could possibly name him or her. She had her portrait cat, Artemindora and her kittens that included Orion but now she didn't know what she could name a cat that would wander around her dorm and go home with her on holidays.

And she wondered why her parents named her Alina and Bella, Bella. Aside from the fact that when finding out they were having twins with "baby A" and "baby B," why Alina and Bella? Why not Adeline and Bethany? Alana and Beatrice? It could have been any combination of names.

"Oh yes, I do, in fact I love my name, if that doesn't sound too conceited" Haley laughed. She had to remember how often her friends talked about which name they would choose if they could. But Haley never had the wish, she just loved her name and was very grateful to her parents for that. But Haley also thought that every name had a certain speciality and was in some way beautiful in its own way.

"Have you ever wanted to change your name?" Haley asked curiously. So far she never had met someone else who would have answered no to this question. "I think there are an infinite number of beautiful names in this crazy world, but I wouldn't want to change mine."

Haley reached into her bag again during the conversation and took out the box with the cookies, which she now placed openly on the ground and told Alina with a quick glance that she is welcome to help herself. She bit with relish into her cookie and remembered the last Christmas at her grandparents. About the good food, the funny get-together and the presents under the Christmas tree.

"Are you staying at Hogwarts for the vacations or are you going home to your family?" Haley hadn't thought about that yet. Her parents expected her to come home, but Haley knew that if she wanted to stay here, they would allow her to.

"No, I wouldn't change mine. And I like that it's a bit different. Sometimes it's a bit TOO different and people get it wrong, calling me Alaina or Aline, but that's understandable." And it stood out, even more so than her twin's name and she liked that...not that she meant anything bad towards Bella in thinking that though.

"I uh..." she paused for a moment. The holidays were so quickly approaching and she had given going home or staying a whole lot of thought. "I'm not really sure yet. You see...my sister Bella wants to visit to stay at Beauxbatons for the holidays and I'm not sure who will be at home. There's Margie, the cook and James, my father's assistant..." her voice sort of let out towards the end. She knew how pathetic this must sound to her new friend.

A girl should have family at home. Parents, siblings. Not house staff. Now, James and Margie were quite close to Alina and she held them dearly within her so they were in essence family, but not quite the ones that most people had. "And there will be the other staff. But, I'm not sure there will be anyone else. I haven't been in communication with my father since mid August," she paused to look down at the grass and ran her hand along it. "No conversations, no letters, nothing. No one's heard from him. No one's seen him. I don't know if he just took off to do whatever and he's okay or if there's a problem." It affected her thoughts so much lately that it was starting to affect her grades.

Haley had to laugh, "I don't know the problem of people not being able to pronounce my name correctly, but it feels like I know 10 diffrent spellings!" Haley didn't mind this but used to find it unpleasant when she had to point it out to someone. In the meantime she could smile about it.

Haley felt sad and couldn't understand why nobody from Alina's family would be at home or better that Alina didn't know that at all. How could it be that her father did not ask about her? She felt a whiff of anger but it went away quickly, she didn't want to judge anyone without knowing the story and reasons. Haley wasn't sure if she wanted to go home either but she felt that everyone should have the chance to have a nice Christmas with the family.

Haley did not have to think long, "Alina, would you like to spend Christmas with me and my family? Well, I mean, only if you want to." Haley suddenly felt stupid, what was she thinking? Alina would definitely say no, "eh sorry, I don't know, and I know it's not your family but my family always has a lot of room in their hearts for new people." She smiled embarrassed "Well, I can't offer you such a charming house and stuff, but I am sure that I can offer you a nice time!" Haley now had a big smile on her lips.

"But of course it's not a bad thing if you say no!" Haley brought out quickly, she didn't want to persuade or pressure her friend under any circumstances. "I'm very sorry that you haven't heard from your father for so long! Can I help you in any way? Maybe I can find out if someone in my family can find out something or knows him" she looked at the floor, "I don't know, it doesn't sound like a promising idea but I don't know what else to do."

Alina was surprised that Haley offered up her home for the holidays but also not at all. She was one of the true genuine people she had recently met and she was happy that she had. "You know, Hales...I just might take you up on that. Nothing official yet, but as the holidays grow closer I'll let you know." It beat going home to a large empty house.

"And yeah, maybe they can help some way," she shrugged. "I mean, my father has this assistant named James and I swear he usually can figure out ANYTHING." But he apparently hadn't figured out why her father was missing.

A group of annoying first year boys along with a boy in her year that was in her Herbology class began to approach the Great Lake down the path. Alina could hear them already. She rolled her eyes and shook her head. "We should prank them. I don't know how and I don't really have a reason, but it'll be fun to mess with them. Come on!" she whispered, motioning Haley to follow as she hurried down over to the side of the lake's edge where there was some tall grass and the two girls could be hidden and figure out a plan of attack or humiliation.

"I would be very happy, just let me know in time so I can clear this with my parents." Haley smiled at Alina, she was again very happy about this friendship and knew that her parents would not mind. They had the same warmth and openness as Haley and would be incredibly happy to meet friends of Haley.

Haley didn't know what else to say about the topic with Alina's father, she was incredibly sorry, but she was a bit overwhelmed with the situation herself. She looked embarrassed on the floor and then smiled encouragingly at Alina and gently squeezed her shoulder, "We will find something out, I am sure of it!" Without going into it further, both knew that the subject was closed for the time being.

"I like the way you think girl!" Haley laughed, this was just the action which she needed. Without asking why, because she didn't care, she put the cookie box and the rest of her stuff in her bag and followed Alina with quick steps. They knelt next to each other and watched the group of students. "So, are you after someone in particular? Shall we be nice or bad?" Haley pulled the corner of her mouth upwards and put on a playful evil look.

"Or did you come up with a plan?" Haley looked at her expectantly and at the same time kept thinking up ideas. As she continued to brood, she did not take her eyes off her goal. They sat there in the high grass, stalking their prey like two lions. At this thought Haley had to laugh and quickly put her hand on her mouth. She looked kinda scared in the direction of the group but they just continued talking. Lucky again, they did not hear Haley's laughter and she sighed in relief.

"No, I only know the one boy and I haven't spoken to him much," she said of the second year boy that was with the first years. "Maybe we can try to scare them. Have them think something is here out to get them...maybe some evil little imps or the giant squid," she used a very low voice so that her friend could hear her but not their prey.

She had swam in the Great Lake once before and it was cold. SO cold. And now being closer to officially being Winter, it was sure to be even colder but that was a risk she was willing to take. That, and Alina did miss swimming more often while she was there at Hogwarts. Back at her home in Updown Court there were multiple swimming pools - two indoor and two outdoor!

Alina waited though, not putting any particular plan of action into motion until she got her friend's opinion. Maybe she had her own idea or spin on it that she wanted to give input on.

One of the boys picked up a rock and tossed it into the water, attempting to have it skip along the top of the water's surface but failed to make it happen and it just plunked into the water.
