"Rosie Willew!"

The hardest part was done, which was to get on the Hogwarts Express, Rosie kept checking her hair pins and looking around, she would classify it as estressefull. All cabins were full, either by older students that seemed busy or first-years like her, and the ambience was overall awkward, so not much dialogue was exchanged. Hair pin check count: 13
She loved the clothes, the uniform robe made her feel some sense of duty, actually the whole thing did not felt quite real yet, so she felt as a child borrowing a costume. Breathing in all the new landscapes and details made her grab her journal out to make some notes at some point, but she then reconciled herself to observe others. The pure energy of this new beginning was on itself enough to keep her awake all night today.
She was now smiling at everyone, hoping they were potential, good potential, wondering how her impressions would change as the years passed. Some people she thought she knew from London, others she wondered if they were also Irish and if they would be potential friends because they would share a family postcode? She decided she would be more out-going tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, she needed to know her surroundings better and have things settled properly. She was sure she was not even walking like herself.

Fisrt things first, her house. Her family did not explicitly say anything but they were dropping hints of the Ravenclaw tradition. Sometimes someone in the family would turn out to be a Slytherin or a Hufflepuff, they never had a Gryffindor in the family before, it was a family joke in the Soda Bread business of the Willew's that Gryffindors were simply muscle to loaf around. hahaha i am so sorry.
Hair pin check count: 31
She calculated and the chances of her being a Gryffindor were less than 12,77562% if she could give the hat the right answers, so there was no reason to worry about that. She spent her time at the ceremony watching closely the students called, if the name suited their faces, how they must have been feeling and of course, she tried to guess before the hat which house would each of them fit in, she got 4 right out of 22, because the hat works in mysterious ways, before her name was called.

"Hello Sorting Hat!"
Well...Well...Another Willew...And Marricott? This is interesting...So many questions you seem to have...Yet, you do not ask. Is this patience or fear?
Neither, I bet on compliance. I should wait the appropriate time to-
Oh, so you have spent a lot of time thinking about it. Very into analysis aren't you? The quick responses too, just like your mother.
Rosie smiled at the thought of that, of course her mother was a Ravenclaw and it made that the most inspirational house.
And you hope to convince me I should place you in the same place as your mother, in Ravenclaw.
Me? Well...No, I-
Although, hard-work is not always a trait of Ravenclaw...The House of your aunt Hertia, Hufflepuff, would be nice. But that persistence...your hard-work is ambitious...Ambitious yes. Like your grandmother Ersia, a Slytherin. Great potential there.
Well I guess it would be nice to-
Nonsense! You project too much on history, yet not as a dreamer but as a response to your insecurities.
The past is only useful to learn from! I-
You should use your creativity and wisdom instead, not to hide in the light of the foreseeable but do as your heart wishes and explore the shadows of the unknown. Your thirst is not for tranquility, not for glory or reputation, if you keep trying to fulfill all those wishes they'll cause your ruin. They are not your wishes.
That is...Very accurate...
Your individualism helps your intellect, you want to solve problems, your free-thinking opens your mind to explore, not only the stars but all - and only - what can entice your hard-work...This kind of ambition makes you perfect for.....

While waiting for her name to be called, 𝕬melia notice that most students has a strong opinion of what house they wanted to be in. Some is of because family pressure or prejudice, Amelia don't really understand this because both of her parents always taught her that being in a certain house doesn't make a person good or bad. There Chris sat quietly watching as the ceremony unfolded. His eyes scanned the room and could feel the mixture of nervousness and excitement from the other students. Other first year's were clearly feel the anticipation of finding where the sorting hat would choose to place them. Names began being called and voices talked in hushed anxiousness. One after one, students were called up and the hat would shout it's choice.

For a brief moment, he began to drift in thoughts of which house would become his new home. Any seemed like a good choice for him, but none felt like a true calling. Just as his brain began to side track, his name was called.

"Chris Warren"

Making his way past the other students, his heart began to race. There was no turning back now, so he began to grit his teeth. Taking a seat, he felt the hat be placed on his head and immediately felt a sense of relief.

"Ah, there it is. I can feel that within you for sure."

The voice almost like a thought inside his head felt like it was moving around him. It felt almost as if it was looking for something but didn't quite know where it was put. With a slow breath, he relaxed and let the feeling flow.

"Just the right bit of bravery, and the right spark of that. I know exactly, where you belong."

Then came the booming shout of the hat, having already made it's choice.

Gryffindor!

This was to become his new home away from home. The Gryffindor table was cheering, as he made his way to find his new seat. He smiled at his fellow students and began to exchange pleasantries. This was going to the be year, he found out what kind of lion he was made of.

She felt on edge as she stood in the enchanting Great Hall, she quickly reined in her thoughts and took a breath, just like she always did when she was nervous, and as always it cleared her head. Just then she noticed everyone looking at her. "...Ahem...DragonFlame, Lisa" Oh no, did she miss her name the first time?! "So much for a good impression", she thought gloomily as she walked towards the stage or whatever it was and sat down at the stool and she felt the soft fabric of the Sorting Hat on her head which was strangely comforting, in a way. She wasn't particularly comfortable with a hat snooping around her head, even if it was the Sorting Hat. Her thoughts were interrupted with soft chuckle, "I see you are very feisty", his observation was correct and on point, but not unkind. She relaxed a little bit. The Sorting Hat continued, "Very smart and witty, bold and adventurous spirit, cunning and ambitious, very loyal and hardworking. Hhmmm, you have all the prominent qualities of all the houses. Difficult, very difficult. Trustworthy, but sometimes lies for the other person's benefit." 'STOP EXPOSING ME' , she felt like yelling. "Sassy and quick to stand up for what she thinks is right, values equality and kindness, and above all loyalty, doesn't like change, and at the same time itching for adventure, This is going to be very hard. What should I do?" 'Any house is fine with me but please, for the love of god, stop exposing me', she thought, with an edge of desperation. The hat laughed and said, "I know, HUFFLEPUFF!" She smiled and walked towards the Hufflepuff table.

Beatrix stood near the front of the group of first-years waiting in the Hall, intently listening to the Sorting Hat singing in a deep, gravelly but somehow cheerful voice that seemed to come from a large tear near the brim. A rush of excitement flooded through her, and she unconsciously straightened a little, as the Hat belted out its last verses:

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

Slytherin. Her soon-to-be house. The house that both her parents' families had been in for generations. And, by Salazar, she would be in Slytherin too - it couldn't be any other way. Her mother, equally certain of that fact, had even insisted on adding a green and silver tie and a matching scarf when they had bought Beatrix's school robes, which had earned the pair of them a ridiculous amount of questioning looks from the shopkeeper as first-years didn't normally know their house before coming to Hogwarts.

She sneaked glances at the house tables every now and then while the others were Sorted. The Gryffindor table was the loudest by far - there was a lot of jostling and raucous laughs and shouts, and everyone erupted into cheers when the Sorting Hat announced a new member of their house. Beatrix smirked dismissively. Their behaviour didn't come as a surprise. Gryffindors were bold and brash and had no sense of subtlety, everyone knew that. She was lucky that she wouldn't have much to do with them over the next few years.

"GRIFFITH, BEATRIX!"

She was ready when her name was called. Chin held high and proud, pale cheeks flushed with anticipation, Beatrix strode across the Hall towards the High Table. She gingerly sat down on the stool. It creaked as she sat on it, and was rather uncomfortable, but she wouldn't have to sit on it for long - the decision should be quite obvious.

Although she should have been prepared for it, she jumped as a voice spoke up next to her ear.

"Now, what do we have here? Interesting, very interesting... a Griffith, I see? Yes, I have Sorted many of your ancestors, an old bloodline indeed... all of them in..."

"Slytherin", Beatrix completed the sentence.

"And you are eager to prove yourself worthy of them, aren't you? Ooh yes, there's a strong need to impress, a longing for affirmation... You consider Slytherin the only choice... yet it's somewhat more complicated, I'm afraid."

Beatrix tensed. "What are you talking about? I'm a Slytherin - of course I am, we both know it, just Sort me already-"

The Hat chuckled. "Not engaging the thought at all that you might not be in Slytherin... you're a stubborn one, I see. There's quite the intellect there... but, forgive me, you do lack the open-mindedness of a Ravenclaw..."

She tried hard to keep the panic rising up in her under control, but couldn't help interrupting. "I'm insisting on Slytherin because I am going to be in Slytherin - all my family have been, and I'm ambitious, cunning, whatever you require-"

"Now, that's intriguing...", the Hat continued, as though it hadn't even heard her thoughts. "You try hard to set yourself apart, claiming not to care about others, but there's a lot of loyalty hidden there... once you allow yourself to get close to someone, you'll protect them with your life..."

Beatrix's hands clenched on the edge of the seat. "I'm not a Hufflepuff - absolutely ridiculous-"

"No", the Sorting Hat mused, "with that, you're right for once. You lack the kindness... and you're much too eager to be seen. Most Hufflepuffs don't seek glory, you know. No, your kind of loyalty is a very fierce one... indeed, the more I think about it, the more certain I become that your destiny lies in..."

For a fraction of a second, she saw it coming, and opened her mouth in horror, but it was too late, and the Hat's voice boomed through the Great Hall...
"GRYFFINDOR!"
Beatrix felt faint. Not Gryffindor... anything but Gryffindor. It felt like a nightmare - but as the table in front of her with all the students decked out in red and gold erupted into cheers, it all seemed much too real to be a dream.

"No - there's been a mistake", she croaked, "I need to be re-Sorted or something, I can't be a - a Gryffindor!" But no one seemed to hear her over the cacophony of cheers and roars, and the Sorting Hat was whipped off her head, and she stood up and walked over to the Gryffindor table on legs that felt strangely shaky, as though they were about to collapse.

Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021
The excitement of the day, paired with the journey from London, had greatly tired Juniper, but the ride across the Lake and cool night air had swept away the bleary-eyed grogginess she had stepped out of the train with. By the time the young girl walked into the Great Hall, much of her excitement - and anxiety - had returned. Juniper still couldn't quite comprehend that she was here at Hogwarts, a school she had not heard about until May. In the past few months, her mother had described it to her as best as she could, but due to the fact that Madeline Yu had never been here, the explanations were less than satisfactory. Now she was actually here, and Juniper couldn't stop turning round and round to take it all in, eyes wide and mind a whirlwind of thoughts and questions.

The portraits were moving! And the candles were floating - oh, how did they do that? Everything seemed so grand here. It was as though she had jumped straight into a storybook, and Juniper couldn't help but wonder if this was a dream. It sounded so cliche, but it had all happened so fast, and the events were so strange...

As Headmaster Lear explained the sorting ceremony, Juniper looked around again, this time not at the castle but at her peers. I'll be spending the next seven years with these people, she realised with a jolt. Gosh, that's a long time... I hope they're nice people. She silently prayed that they were nothing like the girls at her old school. Maybe she could make friends with some of them, like she had in Seattle. Her gaze drifted to the staff table, and tried to commit the names and faces to memory, but he was speaking too fast and Juniper gave up. I'm sure that I'll learn them in time. And now the Sorting Hat was... singing?!

A hat is singing to me. A HAT. What the-?

Juniper clapped along with the others when the song was finished, although she looked rather bewildered as she did so. What the hell just happened? Floating candles... moving portraits... singing hats... this was all too strange for her. Excitement faded and Juniper swallowed her anxiety, trying to focus as the girls and boys in front of her slowly moved up to take a seat on the stool. Her mother had warned her that Hogwarts was an odd place, but she hadn't believed that it would be this strange. Really, she hadn't been given much information to go off on at all.

Before she knew it, her name was being called. "Yu, Juniper-!"

She swallowed her nerves and kept her head down as she made her way up, too nervous to look anyone in the eye. Juniper recalled what her mother had said - "if it's too much for you, you can always come home." Perhaps she should. She could have a normal life like her siblings and be a Muggle, lock her wand away and go back to school. It wasn't too late - she hadn't been sorted yet. She could still go home, right? If she asked the Headmaster right now, he'd let her, right?

And then she remembered what that professor had said, that day in May. Something about belonging in the magical world, and making friends that would become family... Juniper shook her head. How could she pass this down? She could never go back to London and live an ordinary life with the knowledge that she wasn't ordinary at all. No. She had to do this. She walked the last few steps to the stool quickly, before she could change her mind, and sat down firmly as she hat was lowered onto her head.

Well, isn't this interesting? a voice spoke in her head.

Juniper nearly jumped out of the chair in shock and reminded herself that all the others had surely experienced the same thing. Geez. I have a hat in my brain. This is supposed to be normal, isn't it? You people have a very strange definition of "normal".

The hat made a noise that sounded somewhat like a laugh. I suppose it may seem that way to you. But I sense pure blood in you. You have many, many family members who have been here - Slytherins and Ravenclaws mostly, if I recall correctly...

You sorted my mother's family members? Juniper had known that her mother's family was magical, but not that they had gone to Hogwarts. Madeline had been reluctant to give her daughter any information on her family. She didn't even know their surname - perhaps it was better this way, like her mother had said, but now Juniper wondered if she would find any of them on trophies or plaques.

It continued on as if it hadn't heard her at all. ...You seem to have inherited some of their traits. Ambition. Wisdom. Wit. Observant, watchful... selfish at times...

I'm not selfish! the first year thought indiginantly. This was absolutely ridiculous. She couldn't believe that she was being judged and possessed by an old hat, of all things. It was supposed to be an inanimate object! Juniper groaned inwardly and hoped that the hat would hurry up so she could get off this stool. It was beginning to get a little uncomfortable.

Selfishness is not necessarily a bad thing. There was a slight pause. Juniper swung her legs on the edge of the stool, waiting for it to start talking again. Of course. Once again, it comes down to Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Let me dig a little deeper... yes. You certainly are your father's daughter.

Brows furrowed in confusion as Juniper processed what the hat had just said. She hurried to correct him. You mean mother. My father is a Muggle.

But the hat was no longer listening to her, already shouting out his decision - "SLYTHERIN!"

Anne still could not quite believe what was happening to her. As she walked in the middle of the Great Hall with her fellow first year students, the butterflies in her stomach fluttered madly. This is it. She was officially in Hogwarts. The moment the Deputy Headmaster explained everything to her that faithful summer, about a hidden magical world that she apparently belonged to, Anne decided to throw herself fully into this whole new life. Her parents were shocked (and frankly, horrified) about the idea of having a witch in the family, but -

The truth has come out now and there is no turning back. Anne must embrace the change and keep moving forward. For her siblings. For herself.

When she got all the reading materials from her Hogwarts reading list, she spared no time in learning everything she could about the wizarding world. Anne had always done well in Muggle school and was confident she could adapt well to her new "environment" but reading so many unfamiliar terms in her books filled her with a mixture of excitement and dread.

The few weeks she had to endure before the start of her term at Hogwarts was the most agonizing waiting period Anne had ever experienced. But when she passed thru the wall (literally!) that took her from the Muggle train station to the Hogwarts Express, she felt at peace with her decision to take her place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

And now here she was, face to face with a hat.

A HAT!

That sang!

Anne read about the Sorting Ceremony in Hogwarts, A History but there was no mention of a singing hat. Indeed, she thought "sorting" would be like the one she had gone through in her old boarding school. They also had houses there but they were put in ones depending on the results of their admissions test. She did not mind wherever she was placed. All the Hogwarts Houses had strong points. Although there was something about Slytherin House...

She had read the newest volume of A History of Magic which discussed a Wizarding War around 20 years ago. The Dark Lord of that time was said to be from Slytherin, as well as a majority of his supporters. Though in recent years, the members of this House improved their reputation as a result of the War. Anne hoped that was the truth.

When the hat (which called itself the Sorting Hat) finished its song, the Deputy Headmaster walked towards it and conjured a list with a flick of his wand. Anne wondered when she might be able to learn that skill.

"Ashmole, Anne Elizabeth!"

Anne was pulled back from her thoughts as her name was called. It really irritated her sometimes to having a name beginning with an A. She was bound to be always called first to everything - even if she was not ready. The Deputy Headmaster motioned for her to come forward and sit down on a stool currently occupied by the singing hat. The wizard took the hat before Anne sat on the stool; he then placed it on her head. The Sorting Hat was now readying itself to make a judgement.

"My, what a brilliant mind you have, dear", the Hat said. "Ravenclaw would do you well, that house favours clever people like you."

"Umm, that's very kind of you to say, sir" Anne answered. She was not prepared to having to talk to a Hat. How do you address one and not offend it? It was a thought she had no idea she would ever entertain.

"A pleasant personality, very nurturing," the Hat continued. "Fitting in with Hufflepuff would pose no problem for you."

Anne felt inwardly happy to be complemented by a Hat. Her fears about the magical world were now slowly fading.

"Good amount of confidence, too, I see. Gryffindor can be a great place for you. However, yes, yes, none of them feels enough...,"

Anne waited with baited breath.

"SLYTHERIN!" announced the Sorting Hat.

Night of the Sorting Ceremony, Great Hall
As Calypso had stepped through the great gates of the finest School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, she had sucked in a short breath of awe. Oh my goodness, she had thought to herself. This is Hogwarts. The Hogwarts. The newest batch of students were welcomed into the school, and were told the details of the Sorting. They now stood in a huddled line, only slightly wet from the trip across the lake, waiting to discover their houses. Calypso looked nervously around, taking note of the floating candles and the high arches of the architecture, and the teachers smiling kindly down from the head table. She wanted to remember everything about this moment. Well, everything but the gnawing ball of anxiety in her gut that was currently eating her insides. Her friends Ashley Coulson a Paisley Brown, and Suzanne Byrd from the train became a Ravenclaw, a Gryffindor and a Gryffindor, respectively. Calypso felt her nerves build. Stop, she told herself. It will be what it will be. The Sorting Hat knows best. No use getting all worked up about it. But as the students one by one joined their new houses, and the line in which she was standing got shorter and shorter, Calypso did get worked up about it. Very much so. Finally, she found herself at the front of the line. A teacher beckoned her forward, and she walked out in front of the room, and came to a seat on the three-legged stool. The ancient hat was placed upon her head, and a familiar mildewy scent like old books greeted her.

"Hmm," She heard a voice in her mind say. And she knew it was the voice of the Sorting Hat. "A Starling. Yes, your lot were always a bit all over the place. Several Hufflepuffs, A few Ravenclaws, Some Gryffindors, a Slytherin here and there, ah? Suddenly, Calypso wasn't quite sure what to do. Thankfully, the Hat seemed to like to speak. She supposed it didn't get much chance to during the rest of the year. "I can see you have plenty of wit. And a good eccentric streak. You could be well-suited to Ravenclaw. But then again, perhaps that would be a bit too obvious, don't you think? I see ambition, and lots of kindness. I sense that you are a hard worker. So perhaps Hufflepuff? Ahh, but here, I sense a sort of quiet bravery. A determination to stand up for others. I see stubbornness, too" The Hat chuckled. "Yes, you are well suited to Gryffindor. Very much indeed. Not in the traditional sense, perhaps, but I see that you will bring something to that house, Calypso Starling, and that in it you will grow in ways you'd have never imagined." And with that, the Hat called out,

"Gryffindor!"

Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021
Ashley was nervous. She wasn't going to say she was fine, because quite frankly, she was in a new country in a new school filled with new people, not to mention her newfound abilities. She had every right to be terrified. She gaped up at the ceiling of the great hall. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. Candled floated, seemingly weightless, in the air towards the high ceiling. The long, wooden benches were filled with children her age and older, all chattering and laughing excitedly. Ashley didn't speak. She was afraid that if she tried, nothing would come out. So instead, she stood with the other first years at the front of the room. Waiting. Finally, the headmaster started calling the first years up to be sorted. Sorted. She could not believe that this was happening. Ashley pushed her glasses up higher on the bridge of her nose. Seeing as her last name started with a C, she knew that her turn would come sooner rather than later. Sure enough, the next name called was Ashley Coulson's. Ashley slowly started to walk up to the worn old hat. Someone set it on her head, and she closed her eyes. Waiting. She could hear the hat whispering, but whether it was to Ashley or to the hat itself she could not tell. It didn't matter, anyway. She was so worked up she didn't hear a word it was saying. You've got this, she thought to herself, wherever you are put, it is where you belong. Suddenly, the hat's mumbling ceased. Then it shouted out a single word; "RAVENCLAW!"
All Ashley could do was smile.

Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021
He was quiet.
Heading into a great big open room full of so may people. Nothing could describe the way he was feeling. Was this...excitement? Nervousness? Or-
"RAVENCLAW"
Now his heart had been racing. Jacob was told of Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs..and his favorite; Slytherin.
His sister always thought of him as a Slytherin. Especially on the way he had acted. He had thought the same.
With all of the chatting going on, it was hard to hear himself think. He never had been anywhere with so many people, food, and so much light. His mind was more focused on the setting of the room that he hardly noticed the old venerable hat call out his name.
" Jacob Malone!"
The old hat had waited for a few moments before getting very vexed.
" I said JACOB MALONE!"
The crowd went silent for a split second and looked about the room. And that had focused his attention on the old hat.
"Did something happen?" He had asked someone behind him. But they must not have heard him due to the crowd roaring back with conversation.
" I will ask one last time...where is Jacob Malone!?!"
The impatient hat had called again. And stumbling to the hat, was Jacob quivering in fear. He had never heard anyone scream like the hat besides his parents.. He tried to act bold but the fear of the hat had taken over.
Jacob had finally gotten over to the hat.
"Well it took you long enough..now sit."
The hat had spoken, worn out from the yelling.
Jacob then sat down, with a professor delicately setting the hat down on his head.
"Hm I see..a family..ooh.. tch tch they fight, yet you still care for them. They yell, yet you still have hope..You seem to be bold. Gryffindor perhaps?

Urg no.. Jacob had thought to himself in hope the hat wouldn't have heard him.
" Oh! And an attitude I see? tch tch.."
The hat chuckled.
Please just get this over already-
" And fights...typical for a boy your age.. but all of this..for your family? All of the fights, insults, attitude.. just for them? And for what? To know it won't help anything, but to know that beneath all of that darkness, is a somewhat frightened boy, whom loves to draw, to smile. But to put it all behind.."

His face had become very solemn. But hearing all of that..knowing that the hat was the only one whom knew the truth..Had gotten him thinking about his family when they were the happier times. It made him feel warm inside.
"And much more goes about you, but knowing who is truly you... shows that you are a.-"

When he heard what the hat had spoken his heart started racing. All the suspens, had finally been no longer there anymore. But finally! Would he get his chance to be a Slytherin? Although none of anything he said was too close to a Slytherin, maybe there was a 50% ? Or-
"HUFFLEPUFF!"

It felt like his heart had sunk through his throat. The feeling of being a Hufflepuff!
No no no no no! They must've mistaken it! I-I- He'd thought panicking to himself. It was hard to breath as he sat up. He then looked out into the big open room seeing no other than the Hufflepuff clapping with joy waving their arms to come over.
Jacob had taken a big gulp and breath and stumbled into the large open table, hoping there was something to do about him being at what he thought was the "wrong" table..

" I don't fight unless I have a good reason to be fighting.."~Jacob Malone
