Her day had been going so well, surprisingly so, likely still on the high from the ball the week prior. The night had been amazing, everything she’d wanted and more. For the first time in a long time, she’d been able to zone out from the world, forget about her father and his lousy opinions, ignore the deep-set loneliness she never allowed herself to dwell upon, and most of all she’d just been able to be herself. She’d spent the night dancing and twirling without a care in the world.

The second she’s seen her father’s large eagle owl this morning, she’d known her happiness would come crashing down. Her appetite had quickly disappeared as she untied the parchment from the owl’s leg. He nipped at her fingers, clearly just as irritated by the whole ordeal as she was, and only left when he’d eaten the leftovers of the pastry on her plate. She watched as the bird flew away, struck by the overwhelming desire to be able to fly herself. To be free.

With narrowed eyes and a stern frown which told anyone who might see her not to engage, she stood up and left the Great Hall. She ignored the curious eyes from some of the other student’s as they watched the green-haired girl storm out of the hall. All they do is stare, she thought bitterly, as she hurried off to her transfiguration class early. She scrunched up the piece of parchment, shoving it into her robe pocket in hopes that not being able to see the offending letter would rid it from her mind. It didn’t.

She managed until lunch before the need to know what her father was complaining about this time got the better of her. She’d practically felt the letter burning against her side as she’d struggled through History of Magic and had well and truly had enough. Instead of making her way back to the Great Hall to eat, she found herself in the girl’s bathrooms - empty, much to her delight.

With more grace than her angered state deserved to possess, she found herself leant against one of the bathroom’s far walls, knees brought up to her chest as she pulled out the screwed up parchment. To her chagrin, it hadn’t spontaneously combusted as she’d hoped it might after being ignored. Instead, the obnoxious cursive of her father’s hand glared up at her.

As she unfolded the piece of parchment, she found her anger begin to falter, making way for the deep-rooted sadness which always came with her father’s words. A final deep breath was all she allowed herself before she read the letter.

Saraphina,
I am most displeased with your blatant disregard for my wishes regarding this past weekend. You were informed numerous times to remain in your common room during the festivities, an instruction you clearly did not follow. Despite my efforts to be fair and just, you appear to take every opportunity to go against my wishes.

Your blatant disregard for your superiors shows a lack in your character, one I believe is only being fed into by your teaching at
that school. No doubt mixing with those mudbloods is doing nothing for the grace and decorum you were raised to possess. Should I hear that you have stepped even one foot out of line again before your return to the manor for the winter holidays, I shall be forced to reconsidered the option of home-schooling. Swallow your pride, child, and learn your place.

Don’t disappoint me again,
Jacob Lightwood.

Before she realised it, Sarah’s cheeks were wet, and her hands were shaking so much she could barely make out her father’s seal. She found her breath catch in her throat, a mix of anger and fear and sadness proving too much as she tried to calm herself down. She wasn’t one to cry, bottling up thoughts to avoid such an overt show of emotion. But now that she’d started, she couldn’t seem to stop - silent sobs wracking her body as heavy tears fell from her cheeks to the piece of parchment in her shaking hands, blurring the words she so hated. Swallow your pride. She wished it was the first time she'd heard those words.

It was always so easy to be angry with her father. The very things he stood for made her see red, but she rarely allowed herself to actually feel the pain his words caused. She'd learnt from a young age how to but on a mask which hid her truth. But the more poison he tried to throw at her, the more the mask slipped, and the harder it became to hide it from the world. She was too tired to bottle it up this time. So, for once, she let herself cry.

Haley was just having lunch in the big hall and laughing loudly with her friends. Today was an amazingly good day, the sun was shining, the classes went well and she had the rest of the afternoon off. Just now two friends told about a funny event when Haley almost spit out her pumpkin juice because she had to laugh so much. She just couldn't stop and soon everyone was laughing because of her laughter and not because of the story.

Time flew by and they went their separate ways again. Before Haley would bring her things into the common room and then think about the rest of the day, she had to go to girls' bathrooms where she was already hurrying in quick steps.

Once there, she thought she was alone, but as she was standing at the sink to wash her hands, she suddenly heard a faint sob and jerked. She hadn't expected that someone else was here. She stopped shortly and was quiet to make sure she wasn't imagining anything, but then she heard a short quietly sob again.

Haley slowly turned around and looked for the unknown person. At first she couldn't see anyone, but then she saw two feet in the back of the bathroom. She slowly walked towards the person and then saw that there was a girl with green hair, her arms wrapped around her knees, sitting on the floor and leaning against the walls. "Wow, does her hair look great," Haley thought at first, but that wasn't important right now.

Haley saw a letter lying on the floor and knew this was the culprit for her situation. The girl hadn't noticed her yet and Haley kept walking towards her and then crouched down next to her and addressed her softly and calmly, "Hey, can I help you with something?" Haley didn't want to ask if she was okay because obviously she wasn't.

The girl looked at her with teary-eyed eyes and Haley smiled heartily at her to show her that she was happy to offer her help.

Startled eyes shot upwards at the sudden words, Sarah not expecting anyone else to be here. She caught sight of a ginger Gryffindor crouching in front of her, expression a mix of pity and something she couldn’t work out.

The second she’d managed to get her heart rate to level, she cursed inwardly. She shouldn’t have let herself be found in this state. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d cried in front of someone and she hated the feeling it caused. She’d perfected her ‘mask’ years ago, having to learn to hide her emotions early in order to make it through living with her father. He was a traditionalist, a blood purist. He hated anyone who wasn’t Pure-Blood and thought himself high above them all. Sarah had learned to hide how upset his bigoted ways made her, usually masking sorrow with anger or sarcasm or wit. She wasn’t used to letting sadness slip past her mask and the fact that this girl, this stranger, was seeing her like this, left a bitter taste in her mouth. She indignantly wiped at her eyes, grew irises no doubt surrounded by an angry red.

“No, you can’t,” She snapped, let her eyebrows draw into a deep scowl as she looked across at the girl. The anger from before had returned. Anger at herself, though she directed it at the Gryffindor in front of her. Sarah was intimidating by nature. Her sharp features and obnoxiously bright hair mixed with her Slytherin tie often left people steering clear. It was something she usually hated - to be judged before she’d even been allowed to open her mouth. Now she found herself wishing for the usual intimidating look which came so naturally. Her scowl deepened.

She caught the girl’s eyes wandering to her disarmed letter and was quick to snatch the parchment back into her hands. It did nothing but remind her of her father’s words. Swallow your pride, child, and learn your place. She hiccuped. The noise was a drastic juxtaposition to the glare still settled on her face - the glare she could feel slipping away. Her anger was misplace, she knew that. This girl hadn’t been the one who’d written yet another dreadful letter. Nor was she the one who’d allowed herself to blubber in the bathroom floor like an idiot. She made a silent vow to herself, both to refrain from having breakdowns in public spaces, and to stop reading the owls she received from her father. His words were poison. And they were quickly poisoning her.

“Sorry. Just because I feel like crap, doesn’t mean I have to make you feel bad too,” She said eventually, pointedly avoiding the girl’s eyes. She was embarrassed that she’d been caught crying and irritated with herself for snapping at someone who’d just been trying to offer help. Pull yourself together, Sarah, she thought desperately, forcing a deep breath. It was far shakier than she’d have liked but it was enough to calm her breathing to some degree. “I don’t suppose you’d believe me if I told you it was just allergies?” She asked, making her face form a grin in an attempt to lighten the tone she’d set. She’d let her mask falter - let it crack - but she’d not let it shatter entirely.

Haley could already tell from the girl's facial expression that she was not pleased that Haley saw her like that. When she noticed the green robe, she prepared herself for the worst and was annoyed for a moment. But she quickly changed her thinking."NOT prejudices" she admonished herself inwardly. But when the girl gave her a nasty look and wasn't very polite, Haley already feared that she should be right again.

Haley still remained in her squat and had decided not to leave. She knew that she probably didn't mean it and Haley just met her in a stupid moment. Just when Haley wanted to say something again, the girl spoke and Haley looked at her in amazement. "Could this be true? Did she really apologize?" Haley asked herself and smiled at her. Her new friend and grandmother were probably right with their words.

Haley had to laugh, "If you prefer, I'll pretend that I believe the allergies story. But you're right, actually I don't." Besides, she pulled a handkerchief out of her bag and held it out to the girl. "If I can do anything for you, let me know." Haley had also sat down in the meantime because the long squatting position hurt her knees a lot.

"Even if it is just to leave you alone" She smiled at her. Haley wanted her to know that she could be honest. She would not have been angry with her in any way, she knew that sometimes it was good to cry in peace, but she also knew that sometimes it was good to talk to someone.

Despite the utter embarrassment which was currently creeping into every inch of her body, Sarah couldn’t help but be impressed by the girl’s words. She liked the playful bite behind them. There were many people in this castle who’d dare not argue with her, be it her name or appearance or house. But the fact that this girl had point blank admitted that she didn’t believe her was refreshing. Even if it was likely in part due to how vulnerable the Slytherin no doubt looked in this moment.

When the girl offered her assistance, Sarah’s initial remark was to deny it - say she was fin, thank her for her concern, and be on her way. But as the girl shifted into a position which suggested she wasn’t going to be going anywhere soon, the green haired girl decided she might as well vent. She’d already been caught red handed - or rather red faced - so why not. Besides, the girl had a kind smile, one which reminded her of her late mother.

“My father, he,” Sarah paused for a moment, unsure exactly what she could offer this stranger without giving too much away. “My father is a prick,” the words left her mouth before she’d really considered them. Though the moment she registered what she’d said, she didn’t take it back. It was true, he was in fact a prick. “He’s bigoted and rude and expects me to be the same way but I don’t want to be. I won’t.” Her voice became shaky and she took a moment to compose herself. “He keeps threatening to take me out of Hogwarts. At first I thought they were empty, but I’m not so sure anymore. Merlin, if he could see me now.” It was true, the worry had started to creep in that if she upset him much more, he might actually follow through with the threats. “I just, I was having a nice day and then his stupid letter ruined it. I guess I’ve been bottling it up for a while.” The words spilled form her mouth like the tears had before. She wasn’t entirely sure why she’d decided to confide in a someone, a stranger no less, but here she was.

“Or, you know, I really am just highly allergic to bathroom floors,” She added at the end. She grinned, her words no longer meant to convince the girl of the ridiculous allergies story, but to lighten the mood. Sarah’s social skills weren’t all they should be. In fact, they were severely lacking for such an extroverted and talkative girl. She’d grown up surrounded by adults whom she’d wanted to irritate though, and it meant she often said the wrong thing when trying to actually be friendly to people her own age. She was working on it though.

“I’m Sarah, by the way,” She said, extending her hand out to the red headed girl before her. “And I promise I’m not usually like, well, this,” She added as an after thought, motioning to her still red face which held the remnants of tear-stains and letting a soft chuckle pass her lips.
Apologies for the delay. Life got in the way.

Haley noticed that the girl preferred to be alone and Haley could understand this, even if she hoped that she accepted her offer. But Haley was already preparing herself to leave her alone. Surprisingly, she had probably changed her mind. Haley looked confused for a millisecond, but quickly smiled encouragingly at the girl. She was very pleased that she could bring herself to talk to Haley, even though they had only known each other for a few minutes.

Haley gave a short laugh as she called her father an asshole. She liked the girl already. She remembered her moment screaming swear out loud in the bathroom not lang ago. She did also assumed she was alone then, but neither was Haley. She turned her attention back to the words that just came out of the mouth across from her.

Haley felt a little sorry for herself, uncomfortable at the thought of how her new acquaintance must be feeling. She herself loved Hogwarts so much, this was her home, she didn't even want to imagine what would happen if her parents took her away from this place. "Family troubles, right? Man, I'm really sorry to hear that!" spoke Haley to the girl in consternation. "Pff, and even if he saw you like that. You know what he would see? A strong girl who doesn't let her father influence her and has her own principles!" Haley tried to encourage the girl, but she also meant exactly what she said. She had a lot of respect for this behavior. She thinks this was incredibly powerful - the negative realization about her own family, her own father, and then also admitting to herself that she doesn't tolerate that.

Haley had to laugh, she liked the girl's humour. "Yeah, I think it's more the allergies too." She smiled and gave her a quick wink as she began to settle into a more comfortable position. "Hi Sarah, nice to meet you, even if the circumstances could be, well, a little nicer." Haley smiled again, because she didn't mean that in any negative way, she just wanted to cheer Sarah up. "I'm Haley." She added, taking Sarah's hand and shaking it. "And if it makes you feel any better, I've had moments like that too. Just the other day I thought I was alone in the Lavatory and I yelled out loud my frustration, with, mh..." she stopped short and suppressed a giggle "some not very nice words." She added quickly.

"Um, so, do you want to talk about it some more? Call your dad some more names? Which is totally fine with me!" Haley had to laugh, "Or would you rather get your mind off it a bit?" Haley was eager to see her reaction, but in no way wanted to badger or annoy her so she hastily added another short sentence. "But the offer still stands, of course - if you'd rather be alone, I respect that too!"

Knowing how some members of the Wizarding World got about blood and family, Sarah was happy that her comment about her father earned her a laugh. It would be just her luck that the one person she’d found and ended up spilling her secrets to was offended by the idea of her insulting her father. It wasn’t unheard of. She’d once spent an entire evening speaking to the son of a dinner guest her father had invited to the manor about how irritating she found the whole affair, only to find out later that the snitch had recalled everything she said to his mother, and subsequently her father. She’d been condemned to her room for two weeks after that.

She couldn’t hold back the warm smile which fell on her lips at the girl’s deduction of her. Strong. It was a word she sometimes associated with herself, more out of self-pity than of any actual merit, but hearing another person suggest she was strong made a proud warmth settle in her stomach. And no, it didn’t matter that this girl didn’t actually know anything about her or her situation; it was enough, and it helped chase away the remnants of her spiralling depressive state which she’d been slowly sinking into. She hastily wiped at her face, trying to rid it of any remaining moisture. She was okay now – she’d had her moment and apparently spilling her guts to a stranger had helped her get over it. “Thank you,” She spoke softly, though the sincerity behind her words was obvious. She meant it. truly meant it.

“I’m Haley," The girl supplied, and Sarah found her thoughts immediately comparing the girl’s fiery hair to the comet she’d been reading about the week prior. Halley’s comet was a spectacle to behold, and she wondered whether the similarities between the girl and the phenomenon were purely in their similar names. The wink she’d just shot her suggested there was perhaps more to her. The potential of this girl – of what she was like or who she liked to surround herself with – flitted around her mind as she took her hand. Sarah’s only smiled more.

“Well, I’ve been known for my rather expansive vocabulary,” Sarah allowed herself a chuckle as she considered how often she’d been scolded for her use of language not deemed appropriate for a young lady of her apparent standing. As though her father could talk. “As much as I’d love to sit here all day and express my frustration of that man, I’m afraid we simply don’t have the time,” This time Sarah was the one to wink, having quickly shaken her head at the girl when he’d offered to leave. The heavy feeling which had second she’d received her note had lifted significantly and she thought it perhaps best not to dwell too much on it. A change of topic would be welcomed.

“Perhaps something a bit lighter?” She suggested, taking a moment to consider what might be said lighter topic, and settling on the basics. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m thinking first year, right?” She asked, taking note of Haley’s slightly shorter stature, but more so basing her assumption on the fact that she’d never seen the girl before. “How are you finding Hogwarts so far? Intense but amazing?”

Haley watched Sarah, and she felt a weight lifted off her chest when she realized that she was starting to feel better. At least that was the impression Haley got. She was glad if she could help her with her words and make her feel at least a little better. Even though they didn't know each other, Haley was happy about this meeting and that she could do something good today by giving Sarah a sympathetic ear and trying to cheer her up a bit.

Haley had to laugh softly at Sarah's remarks, "That's exactly the kind of friends I'm missing." Haley said. Even she didn't always have the vocabulary expected of a young girl and many of her friends were often shocked when they heard Haley swear for the first time. In the meantime, her friends knew this and didn't find it too bad, but it was always a strange situation, especially at the beginning of their friendships, because she had never been considered to be able to be a bit vulgar.

Haley liked Sarah's manner and had to laugh again. "I think that's a good attitude. You definitely have to let out your frustrations sometimes but you should always think more positive thoughts than negative ones." Haley was happy that they were able to change the subject even if she would have talked to Sarah about her father for hours and insult him here and there again, that would have been no problem for her but she liked it that way.

"You got that right indeed," Haley smiled at Sarah and then looked down at her robe. "First year. All still pretty new." Haley shrugged her shoulders. "I love Hogwarts. I could give you endless adjectives to describe this place but I think this one sums it up pretty well - Home." Haley paused for a moment and smiled.
"Hogwarts is my home. All that," She looked around briefly and started laughing, after all they were sitting in the Lavatory right now. She shook her head, "Well, the whole castle, the portraits, ghosts, the things we learn, the people who become friends and just this whole world." Haley stopped and in that moment she realized how idiotic she must sound. That moment suddenly became totally embarrassing for Haley and she shook her head again.

"Sorry, I must sound like a freak. You have to know I didn't know I was a witch from birth and so I didn't find out about the whole thing until a few years later and since my dad is a muggle it wasn't as big an issue in our house as it probably is with other wizard families. I think because of that I just have a greater enthusiasm for it all again." Haley didn't blame her parents at all for her growing up much in the Muggle world, yet she is incredibly happy to be able to live this magical life now.

"How about you? What year are you?"
