Daphne's cheeks were sore from smiling and hot from blushing as she made her way down the Gryffindor table. The welcome she received from her new house far outweighed the worries she carried from London, and she nestled down in a seat near the back of the hall. The sorting of other first years was complete and Daphne suddenly realized she was staring at an extravagant meal, far removed from the microwave dinners and frozen pizzas she was accustomed to at home. Hardly knowing where to begin, Daphne decided to watch the students nearest her to see what they had on their own plates. Following suit, she piled on roast chicken and potatoes, several different types of dinner rolls, and a giant slice of an unidentifiable but delicious looking pie. The hunger of a long day's travel pushed her through nearly two servings before she slowed down and began to examine the other faces that made up her new family. She quickly noticed that her the Gryffindor table was by far the most boisterous in the room. Laughter and excited talk bubbled up from different groups up and down the benches, and echoed into the cavernous ceiling.
"Definitely not a TV screen," Daphne muttered to herself, still trying to figure out exactly how the moon and stars had made their way into the castle. Twisting in her seat, she observed the other three tables. She couldn't quite remember their names, but she could tell they were made up of very different types of people. The yellow table was laughing and talking as well, but in a less uproarious way than the Gryffindors. Further away, the students at the table decked in blue seemed to be talking rapidly to one another, in low, serious voices. They appeared to be bright and engaged, and Daphne knew right away she never had a chance of making it there. At the opposite end of the hall, the green table was populated with a group of people that nearly made Daphne laugh out loud. She had grown used to grown ups putting on airs around other adults, and this appeared to be an entire group of people devoted to that mindset. She thought it immediately silly, and turned around to her table again, smiling to herself. Yes, she definitely belonged here.

Suddenly, Daphne's smile melted as she realized: she wasn't even past the opening ceremonies and she already couldn't remember the names of the other houses. She began to hear the voices of her old classmates at her muggle school again.
"No! Not here, not this time," she vowed in her mind.
She turned timidly to the student sitting to her right, and pulled on their sleeve.
"Excuse me, I'm so sorry but...could you remind me what the names of the other houses are? You see, I don't come from magic," Daphne blushed "so this is all very difficult for me to take in."

Nicholas was quiet as he sat at the table, the applause and pats that had greeted him as he had first joined the other lions had ceased as the other students, both old and new alike, took to watching the rest of the sorting ceremony with a great deal of interest. As for Nicholas, he merely attempted to process what was going to happen during the rest of the school year. It was no secret that he hadn't exactly been expecting to be placed in Gryffindor, although in retrospect it had become pretty clear as to why it had happened. The more he thought over it, the more the reasoning became more and more clear. It was where he belonged, that much seemed certain enough.

The mental anguish and internal debate subsided, the boy finally allowed himself to soak in the festivities. Where had been overcome by nervousness and a general numbness to the reality of the situation earlier, he now found himself truly engrossed in the school's cheery atmosphere. He was truly at Hogwarts, the school his parents had gushed about for all so long. He couldn't help but smirk.

He'd taken to looking over the other students, both at his table and at the other houses, even as the sorting ceremony continued. It appeared that the stories that he'd grown up with were all true enough. He found his eyes settling for the longest at the Hufflepuff table, the badgers after all had been his mother's home for her time at the school. She'd spoken at length about how she'd never felt more at home than when she was in that house, that was of course until she met his father and they'd become inseparable. He'd always chosen to ignore such stories. He knew that some part of her had held out hope that at least one of her children would be a Hufflepuff, but he also knew that she had very little hope that the honour would fall to Nicholas.

Nicholas found his musings broken by the end of the ceremony and his subsequent focus turned to the feast before him. He was starving, it seemed that no matter how much he ate, he always wanted more. Roasted vegetables and lamb filled his plate, and the boy devoured the meal with an unsightly hunger, food shoveled into his mouth with speed and enthusiasm. It had been a long day, and he'd been looking forward to dinner for all too long.

His dinner was halted, however, by a tug on his left sleeve, it seemed that one of the other first year Gryffindors needed assistance. How was it that he so often found himself assisting others, was it because of his height?

She'd asked about the names of the other houses, and instantly he knew that she was muggleborn, a fact that she confirmed within the same sentence. He supposed it made enough sense to be overwhelmed by it all and thus the boy answered with a smile.

"Of course," He answered, making sure to gulp down the sweet potato before he spoke. He all but dropped his cutlery, his manners truly forgotten before he began to gesture, "Green with a snake is Slytherin," he pointed to the house in question, "they're about ambition and pride," his hand turned next to the house under the blue banners, "blue is Ravenclaw, they value intelligence," finally he pointed at the house who he had been pondering not a few minutes earlier, "that's Hufflepuff, hardwork and loyalty." Nicholas paused for a moment before adding, almost as a second though, "Oh and we're Gryffindor, brave and daring."

Rather smug and satisfied with his response, the boy gave the girl a second smile, this one bigger, "The name's Nico by the way, and I suppose, well, welcome to magic."

Daphne followed with her eyes as Nic explained to her the different houses. She attempted to cement the information into her brain while he went through each table.
"S for snake, snakes slither, Slytherin," she muttered hurriedly, before any of what she just learned could slip out of her mind. "Then yellow for dandelions which turn into puffs, Hufflepuff. Aaaaaand blue for brilliant, brilliant people go to Ravenclaw. Got it!" She suddenly exclaimed, and realized with a blush that she had been speaking out loud the whole time.
"Thanks, Nic. I'm Daphne."
The realization that Nic was the very first person her age that she had spoken to since leaving home came to Daphne very suddenly. She suddenly thought of a million questions she had been dying to ask about the wizarding world, which was as foreign to her as if she had just landed on Mars. But one question crowded the others into the corners of her mind. How on earth had she gotten into the house of bravery? To her knowledge, Daphne had never done anything extraordinarily courageous. Well, there was that time she beat Anthony Jones in a tree climbing competition but that was really only because his mum called him home early.
She looked up at Nic, who was much taller than her despite being the same age.
"It's so nice to meet you, and I've got so many questions about all this that my head feels like I'm on a roller coaster...but I have to ask: what if I'm NOT brave? Can the hat have been wrong?"

Nicholas only blinked as the girl spoke rapidly, listing off a trait and some kind of memorisation scheme to associate said trait with the house colour or crest. The ones she had invented for Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw confused him ever-so-slightly, and he found that he'd forgotten them before he even had time to properly think them over. Of course, her description of Slytherin was apt, the name was so on-the-nose it almost felt like parody. Yet, Nicholas supposed, that was just how purebloods operated.

He'd had the benefit of being raised by at least one parent with some experience of the muggle world, and to that end he was more familiar than most with some of the peculiarities that wizards from those more prestigious families indulged themselves in. Of course, his father was entirely oblivious to the customs of his in-laws and made a fool of himself every time he attempted to indulge their muggle antics but at least his children were a bit more in-tune with it all.

So, he wasn't startled by the muggleborn girl's confusion and attempts to make sense of it all. He even chuckled at her blush at the realisation that she had been speaking aloud. That chuckle turned into a grin when the girl introduced herself. Daphne.

The girl, Daphne, went on to explain just how odd the whole experience was, something about a roller coaster? Nicholas wasn't familiar at all with the term but assumed it meant something crazy or wild. But her next question was far from wild, what if the hat was wrong?

Nicholas's face stopped mid smile, his eyes cast to the other tables once more, as he thought it over. He'd thought it after he was sorted, but had tried to get that thought out of his head pretty quickly. He didn't feel brave either, truth be told, maybe the hat could be wrong? But he'd been told the hat was never wrong, it knew the wizard better than themselves after all.

"I, uh," He started to speak, but found he couldn't manifest his thoughts, ""The hat is never wrong... It's magic, after all. Maybe you've got a brave soul? The hat can see souls, I think, read the colour and assign it to the right house." The words were awkward as they came out of his mouth, the boy clearly out of his depth.

The boy's words trailed off slowly as he felt more and more awkward. As if to distract from the fact that he had no clue how to assail the girl's questions about bravery, he put another roasted potato onto his plate.

Wakana was nervous. Very nervous. She saw some other first-grade girls talking happily at the long table and hesitated at the door to go in. She clutched the edge of her shirt tightly and fixed her tie, finally deciding to step in and introduce herself. As a muggle-born that is completely innocent about this magical world, she needed to make a friend in order to survive through her first year in this school.

What if they laughed about me limping? What if they laughed at me for knowing nothing about magic? What if—

Wakana shook her head, took a deep breath, and stepped into the Great Hall, trying to hide her limp to her best ability.
Surprised that she was warmly welcomed at the Gryffindor table, Wakana walked slowly to the group of first-grader girls who sat at end of the table and was chatting about their opinions on different houses.
They all looked pretty and intelligent. Wakana hid her shaking hands to her back and smiled. “Hello! My name is Wakana, Wakana Yokoyama. I am muggle-born so I don’t know a lot about houses and history of this world, but if you guys don’t mind, can I sit here too..?”

Daphne felt nervous for a moment as Nic allowed a slight laugh to escape after her memorization spiel, but that all slipped away when he allowed himself to smile. As awful as she was in school, she had always been good at reading and understanding other people, and she knew Nic's grin was genuine. It was nice to bask in the glow of meeting a new friend, especially after such a long journey. She beamed right back at him for a moment, and felt the blush on her face grow slightly hotter, though she wasn't sure why since she didn't feel embarrassed anymore.

She watched intently as Nic regarded the answer to her question, and saw him briefly slip behind that veil of deep thought. His grin, the one good solid thing Daphne had found to cling to in such an unfamiliar face, vanished. The answer he gave came out in a broken sentence, rather mumbly and quiet, vastly different from the confidence he showed when explaining the houses. Though being much taller than Daphne, she felt as if she watched him shrink as he finished answering and turned back to pick at some potatoes.

Daphne became instantly afraid that she had asked the wrong question.
"I KNEW I should have gone with the one about the ceiling," she scolded herself under her breath. In the quiet moments that followed, Daphne struggled with knowing what to say. Nic had said the hat was never wrong, but her fear of having ruined a chance at friendship was so great that she had never felt less brave in her life. She knew she needed to say something...but what? She chewed the last piece of apple tart from her plate slowly, giving her time to carefully choose her next words. She turned back to Nic, and offered a hopeful smile.

"If you say it's never wrong, I believe you! Maybe I haven't been brave before, but who's to say I won't be later?" she paused for a moment, then reached out to gingerly pat Nic's shoulder. "We'll both be Gryffindors for a whole seven years, and that's a long time. I bet you a hundred quid that we'll have to be brave sooner or later."

OOC: Haha imagine taking over two months to respond to this. Glad that's not me! (Sorry @Evelynn Decipio )
1st of September, 2020

It had been a strange feeling, returning to school. Almost as if his first year had been some kind of bizarre fever dream and now he was to return back to normal muggle living. Yet, back he was, now an older and distinguished Second year, far above those tiny first years and...

Ah who was he kidding? He was just the same as he'd been earlier in the year. Albeit with slightly shorter hair. Some of his classmates had a different air about them however, perhaps their Summers had been much different to his own.

Perhaps this would be the year to reinvent himself a bit. He'd been a bit quiet and reserved in his first year. Adapting to the Wizarding world was not an easy task for someone whom not long prior had never even heard of it, now he was a bit more used to things, more comfortable, he could focus on perhaps being the cool guy.

Suddenly the hair's on the back of his neck stood up, like some kind of fear response, or perhaps a reaction to a chilling cold. "Weird...ut's no' evun tha' col' un her-..."

A familiar voice calling him by name suddenly answered that mystery. The words themselves were friendly enough, but there was a rather unnerving coldness to them, that made even the Scotsman shiver slightly. He turned to look at the familiar face of one Evelynn Decipio.

"Hullo Uvullun." He replied with a friendly smile, presuming he had just perhaps misread the tone of her greeting. "Meh Summer was gud, ullthoo Summer us a but uf a strung word fer ut en Thurso. Ut's meer leek luss wundy Wuntur." He remarked jokingly, although her expression didn't budge an inch. "Ehm, hoo wus yours?" His question would remain unanswered though as she launched into her main inquiry, placing the book down on the table next to him.

He read what she was pointing to, his lips mouthing the words of the question. He vaguely remembered his answer, he'd of course been joking around when he gave it because he didn't have a proper one, though it was evident the Co-Captain didn't quite share in that humour.

"Ehm, wull...I-I didnae mean teh hurt yeh feeluns. Ah dunnae actualleh thenk yeer tha' scary. Meybe untumideetun, bu' no' un a bad wee."

He chuckled a little bit as he offered for her to sit down. "Ah rully thenk yeer fierce an' eager as buggery. Mebbe a luttle untunse somteems, buh that's no' alwees a bad theng." He explained.

"I wus onlee jokung. Thee wouldnae lut meh cheenge meh unswer afterwards. Ah prummise am no' sceered af yeh." He told her sincerely, with a hand over his heart.

Kora walked over to the Gryffindor Table in silence. She was perplexed. Why in the world would the sorting hat place her in Gryffindor when she so obviously belonged in Ravenclaw? She had thought that the sorting hat never made mistakes, so how could this be? Kora shook it off, the professors would discover their mistake soon enough and place her in Ravenclaw. Kora was absolutely sure of it. For now she would just have to cope with the psychotic Gryffindors.

As the night of the sorting ceremony wore on, Kora grew impatient. All the children at her table were practically yelling all of their words out at once. Kora groaned, how she could possibly be placed with this group was a mystery to her. Maybe, just maybe, she'd find at least one sensible person throughout all this insanity. But no, that couldn't be. Kora sighed heavily as she gazed at the people surrounding her. It would be pleasant, to go outside and breathe in the fresh night air. Suddenly the temptation grew, to just go outside, away from all this confusion and madness. Kora stood up, preparing to give in to the temptation and leave the great hall. But then she shook her head. What a foolish idea. There was no way she could do that, not with all the teachers and students around. She sat back down, frowning deeply. This night would be chaos.

General The Gryffindor Table 2020-2021
@Kora Sato Lilvi walked over to her she looked at her face. Lilvi knew emotions at the back of her head, she knew she needed to make friends so why not be friends with her! "Hello! I'm Lilvi! I can't believe I was sorted into Gryffindor, I may be rebellious but brave, as if. I thought I would be a Ravenclaw! Or Slytherin even?! Anyways, that chocolate pudding looks good, so I'm having some, what about you?" Lilvi knew she wasn't the truest Gryffindor ever, she was anxious and indecisive. She always imagined she would never remake any friends, not one, she couldn't even make a friend at a muggle carnival. Not one, never, ever, ever, had she been good at making friends. Lilvi remembered when she was just 6, so many people were mean to her, just for crying when she couldn't make any friends, at 6 YEARS OLD. Her mother was outraged, she made sure that Lilvi was always going to stick up for herself, and be strong, stronger than anyone who tried to cross her. So Lilvi lived by this, and never was hurt again. Until she was hurt when her sister chose her job over her.

Kora turned around to glare at Lilvi. "You seem like a Hufflepuff to me." She held in her groan. Not another bothersome Gryffindor. Kora then held up a small bowl of chocolate pudding so Lilvi could see it. Then she continued to sip her sparkling apple cider in silence. All these Gryffindors seemed like a bunch of rambunctious Hufflepuffs. Kora curled her lip in disgust. It was the worst possible combination of personalities. Kora then remembered what her parents had always told her about politeness. She sighed and looked back at Lilvi, "I'm Kora Sato. A pleasure to meet you. I'm not a Gryffindor though, so don't expect to see me at the common room after today." Kora then turned back to her apple cider and her chocolate pudding. Lilvi seemed like such a nuisance, she did not want to get friendly with her. Lilvi seemed like the kind of person to follow someone who showed her kindness around. Kora definitely didn't want that. After today, Kora wouldn't have to see Lilvi ever again, once the professors realized their grave mistake, putting Kora in Gryffindor of all houses. Kora smiled slightly and nodded. Yeah, that's all it was - a mistake.
