Rebellious Shoelaces
Mid-Afternoon | October 30th
The trophy room wasn't exactly high on the list of rooms Callie frequented. In fact she rarely ever set her foot through the door as she never had much reason to. What good was staring at a bunch of trophies sitting idle where there was work to be done? What use was being reminded of other peoples accomplishments when she still had her own to make? However her recent duelling victory had finally brought her through the door and ignited a growing curiosity in seeing what lurked within the room she often branded as useless.
Callie immediately took in the warmth of the fireplace when she entered the room. She knew better than most about how cold October got, especially in the Scottish Highlands. Add in an old castle to the mix and the combination was more than enough to make her hands chilly. She rubbed her hands together to beat back the chill all whilst pondering why there was a fireplace in a trophy room to begin with. Sure it was a welcome sight but why did a trophy room have such a thing? It struck Callie as odd as in her mind a trophy room was a soulless room where people dwelled on past accolades. She didn't dwell on things for long though as her attention was quickly grasped by the various shiny trophies lining the walls. There was already so many..would her own name ever make it onto the walls? Or was she doomed to exist in nameless ignorance? Callie would've dwelled on the possibility further but a rogue lace brought a swift end to any further moments of contemplation. As she went to move further down the corridor Callie tripped over the rogue lace and ended up on the floor, crushing her glasses in the process. "Not again!" She exclaimed as she picked up the broken spectacles she relied on so heavily. "Stupid shoes, always betraying me. What did I ever do to you, shoe? Other than throw you at Thomas that one time.." She mumbled largely to herself, assuming there was nobody else present in the room.

Theodora didn't often find herself wandering into the Hogwarts trophy room, but with Halloween fast approaching, the first year witch was starting to miss her family more and more. The trophy room was one of the only places that she could feel close to her family, seeing as she wasn't allowed in any of their common rooms. Theodora was the only Slytherin in her immediate family, and it didn't really help with the whole isolated feeling she felt away from them.
In the trophy room, she could see all the pictures from her mothers glory days on the Hufflepuff quiditch team, as well as her brother playing for Gryffindor, and her eldest sisters championship trophy from a dueling tournament in her fourth year. Pictures and names on plaques were all Theodora had to remind her of her family while at Hogwarts, so sometimes she'd make the trip down the corridor to say hello.
Unfortunately for her, today she'd decided to take the trip around the same time as a rather clumsy Ravenclaw girl. Watching her trip over her shoelaces and fall flat on her face was a rather amusing sight, and it took every bit of her willpower not to bust out laughing. That wouldn't be very polite, and surely the girl was already humiliated enough as it was. Letting out a sigh, the first year approached the older student, a hand outstretched. Theodora wasn't exactly a looming figure, so it made sense that the girl may not have seen her at first, but now that she was standing right in front of Callie, she was rather hard to miss. "Are you alright?" The young witch asked, eyebrows furrowed. "Was quite the spill."

Callie wasn't the most perceptive of people so when the unfamilar Slytherin girl suddenly spoke up she found herself taken by surprise. "Ah, hello!" She exclaimed after fumbling around with her wand, which had escaped her grasp in her mild panic. Eventually Callie managed to regain control over her faithful cherry wood companion and she flashed the new arrival a smile. "Completely fine! My shoelaces just seem to betray me a lot, they're traitors the lot of them!" While Callie couldn't fully make out the features of Theodora since her glasses were currently in a mangled heap on the floor she made sure to face the blurry figure looming overhead. Hopefully she didn't look too scary or was actually a flesh eating monster here to dismember her. Let's just say Callie has a bit of an active imagination, especially after hearing all the stories of things going wrong in Hogwarts.
"Weirdly enough, it happens all the time." She explained with a casual shrug all whilst twirling around her wand in her fingers. With a mild hum Callie pointed the tip of her wand to the mangled heap that was her glasses before uttering a phrase she had come far too familar with. "Oculus Reparo." Once the glasses had mended themselves Callie sat them back on their perch atop her face with a content smile. "There we go, I can see you properly now!" Callie laughed and pulled herself up onto her feet after quickly tucking her lace back into her shoe. "Wait a minute, I don't recognise you!" Callie exclaimed after getting a proper look at Theodora's features. "Are you new? Ah, where's my manners? Sorry!" She gave the girl an apologetic grin as she tucked her wand back into her pocket. "I'm Callie, second year Ravenclaw at your service." Callie made sure to give the stranger a mock salute in greeting accompanied by a lopsided grin. "How are you finding the place?"

Callie was, just after the few phrases she'd spoken to Theo, rather obviously one of the more lively people that the young witch had met in her short time at Hogwarts. So much so in fact that her expressive and lively tone took Theo a bit off guard, the first year blinking a few time as she tried to take in the overall existence of the Ravenclaw girl. Despite Theodora's previous idea that Callie must have been humiliated by her fall, the unfamiliar witch seemed to recover in a matter of seconds with a wide smile plastered over her face. Her positive attitude was refreshing... But a bit jarring after dealing with mostly stoic Slytherin's up until this point.
Theo just sort of nodded along as Callie introduced herself in more than enough words, giving the older witch a tight lipped smile once she was sure she'd finished. By the way she spoke, Theo might have assumed this girl was the official Hogwarts welcome wagon. "Theodora Kane- but most just call me Theo." She returned the girls introduction. "First year Slytherin, as you... Probably could have assumed." The witch looked down at herself, clad in her house robes and tie, matched with a pair of long green socks. "I've been finding things well! The castle is so vast, I feel like I'm finding new places every day. Speaking of, what are you doing in the trophy room? Hardly anyone comes here casually." Theodora didn't want to question the girls life choices, but it was a little strange that she was just hanging around. Maybe she liked the gleam of the trophies, or had a similar reason to her own for being there.

Callie didn't at all take in the house symbol embroidered onto the girls robe and yet it didn't come as much of a surprise when Theodora revealled her Slytherin origins. Perhaps she was finally starting to get an eye for this sort of thing or perhaps Theo's demeanor was easy to read. Callie wasn't sure and nor did she care about getting to the truth of the matter. "Pleasure to meet you, Theo!" Callie added a dramatic bow to her greeting but quickly burst into giggles afterward. Clearly Callie wasn't a girl that took life very seriously and held little qualms when it came to making a fool of herself. "Slytherin, huh? Ooh, that's the same house as Valerie! Henry too but I do my best not to think about him, most of the time he makes me want to hit him on the head with a pebble or something." Callie shrugged off her talk of the boy she didn't particularly like rather quickly. Henry Knight wasn't exactly a topic she enjoyed talking about, especially after his antics on the Field Day a while back.
"Ah, I know right it's huge! I tended to get lost in the abandoned toilets in first year. There's a ghost in there you know! Moaning Myrtle! Kind of a mean name if you ask me, but hey! It's not my place to judge I suppose." Callie noted with a bemused smile, idly fidgeting with her hands as she spoke. It wasn't that Callie was nervous about the conversation but instead the simple fact she struggled to stay still most of the time. Fidgeting was just her own way of keeping her hands busy and her mind focused on the task at hand, most of the time anyway. " I did get lost a lot though...I suppose all this magic stuff was just confusing! I mean it's still confusing but I wasn't born into all this junk like some of the others." She added with a mild shrug. "Oh, I hardly ever come here! Where's the fun in a bunch of trophies anyway?" Callie laughed and briefly glanced over to the accolades decorating the walls. "But I got onto the duelling team recently and won my first match, so I suppose I've had this sort of stuff on my mind." Callie continued to fidget whilst she spoke, this time drumming her fingers against the sides of her thighs. "Me and Thomas managed to win against two third years from Gryffindor! Freaky right? I'm still in awe if I'm honest."

The Slytherin's that Callie had mentioned might as well be perfect strangers to Theo who hadn't met them yet, but maybe it meant they were in the year above her. She wasn't acquainted with too many other Slytherin's other than her fellow first years. However, the fact that someone as cheery as Callie wanted to hit this boy Henry in the head was enough to make Theo write a mental note to steer clear.
Theo determined that it was good to just let the Ravenclaw girl ramble for as long as her train of thought lead on, waiting for a few moments pauses before jumping in herself. However, the fact that she'd gotten lost first year herself was reassuring to Theodora who felt like an idiot every time she was a moments late to class because of her feet wandering in the wrong direction.
"I was born into magic, and it's all still rather confusing." Theo affirmed, rocking back on her heels for a moment. Unlike some other students she'd come across, the first year didn't have a preference of blood status, and the fact that Callie appeared to be muggle born went right over her head. At the reference that the Ravenclaw was on her houses dueling team, Theodora's eyes lit up a bit. She was on the same team that her sister was, so many years ago. "You're on Ravenclaw's dueling team?" She tilted her head. "My sister Athena was the best dueler in your house during her time here. She's got her picture in the case and everything. " Theo's lips slowly curled into a smile as she walked back toward the trophy wall, looking toward one of plaques with a smiling Athena Kane on it. There were a few of them, since she won tournaments quite often. "She was professional for a while, but an accident retired her early."

People who were born into magic used to completely freak Callie out but lately such feelings had started to die down. Sure the general feelings of anxiety and somehow not being enough were still there, just significantly quieter. So instead of allowing herself to become caught up in her own head over the information she simply responded with a pleasant smile. "Ah, but you guys got a head start!" Callie pointed out politely, still idly fidgeting with her hands as she spoke. "I only found out I was a witch like a year ago..Nora told me actually! You'll know her actually, she's your head of house. Although I'd reccomend you call her professor..Nora isn't her actual name." Callie let out a bright chuckle before allowing Theodora to continue.
"Yep! Murder of Merlin I think they called it, still a little surprised I got in to be honest. Dealla and Mars are great captains, can't help but think I don't entirely match up. But hey, I gotta be doing something right if I'm winning!" Callie exclaimed with a bright grin, clearly still delighted with her prior victory. Hopefully the next one would result in a similar way, especially since their future opponents were a little more in her weight class. "Your sister was on it too? Neat! Where's her picture? Come on, you gotta show me!" Callie scanned the wall up and down in hunt of the name in question but found herself struggling to pinpoint what she was looking for. "Professional? Neat, I don't know much about all that stuff. Heck, I still don't know all the quidditch teams and Elias talks about them A LOT."

Listening to Callie ramble about her excitements as a dueler made Theo wonder which of her siblings she should follow in terms of extra curricular activites. She could follow Octavian and join Slytherin's quidditch team- something that others had told her the Kane family was very keen on- or she could follow in Athena's and join the dueling team. Of course, there was always taking Venus'- her sister that was the most recent Kane graduate from Hogwarts- path, and do nothing at all other than cause trouble in the form of being caught "fornicating." Theo still wasn't entirely sure what that word meant, but she did know that it made her father very angry.
At the Ravenclaw girls question, Theodora happily obliged and pointed out one of the pictures of her sister in the trophy case. During her teenage years, Athena was rather tall and muscular with long, wavy brown hair. Though it couldn't be seen from the black and white picture, her hair was almost positively dyed with a red undertone at the time. "That's her," Theo pointed out. "Athena Kane! Captain of her team since fourth year. It was a big deal at the time."

"You look a lot like your sister." Callie pointed out with a pleasant smile, inspecting the image for a few moments. Callie was at her core an extremely outgoing girl so to come across someone of as few words as Theodora was a touch odd. Sure she'd come across quiet people before and was friends with a fair few of them but Callie wasn't entirely sure how to react to Theodora pointing out her sister without much elaboration. Sure, it was always nice to hear about the duelling teams of years gone by but Callie didn't know what else to say on the subject. In truth she was still in awe of the fact she was on the team to begin with as deep down Callie was immensely insecure over her spellcasting abilities. Her grades and duelling victory may have said otherwise but to Callie her abilities paled in comparison to those branded as pureblood. Despite everything that she'd went through over the past year Callie still felt like a fish out of water.
After a few moments of silence as Callie quickly thought over everything in her head, she opted to turn back to face Theodora before speaking. "Are you gonna join any of the teams? I know a fair few people do qudditch instead of duelling! My friend Elias made beater this year and like sure I'm happy for him but at the same time..quidditch is confusing! Then again sports never did mix with my brain very well, ESPECIALLY football. What's so entertaining about some guy kicking a football across a field anyway?" Callie rambled in an attempt to move the subject on, fidgeting with her hands whilst she spoke out of habit rather than nervousness.
