It was Saturday evening and most of the Gryffindor students were playing in the common room games such as gobstones and wizard chess. Romie grabbed her Cello case and put a blanket over it. She really didn't want anyone to see it. Because of her love for music, she was the butt of many jokes back home. She opened up the door to her room and peeked out. Nobody was in the hallway. She walked down and sneaked out of the common room, through the picture of the fat lady. she made her way upstairs to the rehearsal room and was glad to find it empty. She swiftly propped up her cello and started tuning it. She opened up her bag and pulled out the music for the star of County Down, the song her father said was made for her. She started playing it along with singing it. Her voice was amazing but she never sang in front of other people. She was afraid of what they would think of her.She heard in her head, her instructor saying “ Bend your fingers, use your elbow as a gate.” She was finishing the song with her voice hitting notes perfectly when she heard the door open.

Haley spent her free Sunday outside enjoying the sunshine, but as it began to get colder she headed back to the common room. She went through the big gate into the castle and noticed how quiet it was in the hallways at that time.

She was very absorbed in her thoughts and hardly noticed her surroundings when she suddenly heard a voice. "And she smiled as she passed me by. She looked so neat in her two bare feet
To the sheen of her nut-brown hair"
Haley thought she was imagining it, but she soon realized she wasn't. Her mouth made her smile and she immediately thought of her old home.

But how could that be? Quickly she lifted her head and was back in reality, she looked around and realized that she was standing in front of the rehearsal room. She looked around briefly and realized that she was alone. She hesitated to check the room but could not resist - She had to find out who that was coming from.

She glanced carefully into the room and saw a girl standing there with a big cello. Haley couldn't get out of her amazement. The girl played the cello beautifully and Haley was even more excited about the Irishen song she sang.

The girl didn't notice Haley and she walked a few steps into the room and before she could think about it any further, she joined the girl "From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay. From Galway to Dublin town. No maid I've seen like the fair cailín. That I met in the County Down."

Haley had to smile, but just as the girl looked at her in shock, she realized how rude she was. She quickly looked down at the floor and said "oh, I'm sorry! I really didn't mean to be rude."
Haley was annoyed that she hadn't thought about that the girl probably didn't want to be disturbed, but she couldn't undo what happened.

"From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay. From Galway to Dublin town. No maid I've seen like the fair cailín. That I met in the County Down."
Romah's playing screeched to a halt. Her mouth dropped to a frown as she glared up at the girl. The girl had long red hair, just like her cousin Meave. She set down her cello's bow. She had seen her around the common room but had never actually introduced themselves to each other. Now that she thought of it, she had never even talked to her.
"oh, I'm sorry! I really didn't mean to be rude."
She looked up at the girls face and could see that she was truly sorry. Romah sighed. She thought she had finally found a place with some privacy. Honestly, it's no problem. You can stay here and listen if you want. She set her fingers again and started playing The Wind That Shakes the Barley, another of the songs Miss McBrody insisted she knew if she was going to go to that "chaotic land across the lake". She stopped after the first couple of notes. Do you know this song Hayley? If you do your free to sing along. She started playing and sang the first couple lines.I sat within the valley green
I sat me with my true love.
My sad heart strove the two between
The old love and the new love.

Haley was glad that the girl did not hold it against her. She wondered if they knew each other, but Haley was sure that they had never spoken to each other before. She accepted the girl's offer nodding and smiling and sat down at the side while she continued listening to the music.

Haley was absorbed and flinched briefly when she suggested that Haley could sing along. She always liked to sing, but never did so in front of people more than one verse. But since she also knew this song Haley decided to join in.

The old for her the new
That made me think on Ireland dearly.
While the soft wind blew down the glade
and shook the golden barley.

Haley enjoyed the music and warmed up a bit more with every verse and now she didn't sing as softly as she did in the beginning. At the start she was still hoping that she wouldn't sing crooked or the girl would laugh at her, but the thoughts quickly left her again.

She had to laugh and was happy about this funny situation, how two unknown people met totally by chance and ended up singing together. But it was exactly these unplanned moments that Haley loved so much. Meanwhile Haley had got up unconsciously and turned around her own axis and danced to the irish melodies that filled the room.

Even though she only spent the first 5 years of her life in Ireland, she was still born there and often missed her old home. All the more she enjoyed this little "Ireland moment". She laughed and looked at the girl as she says "You play and sing beautifully!"

You play and sing beautifully!
Really? She had never gotten compliments. Living on a rough and tumble farm,if you wanted something good to happen you had to fight for it and earn it. She remembered a day, about 3 years ago she was playing outside with her uncle Sesha's hippogriff, Dartmane. She would tap her on the snout and then dodge so she didn't brush her with her dark, charcoal wings. Romie saw her father and mother riding up the road in their rusty green truck. She had walked down the path and they got out, holding one of her Nanna's famous cherry cake. Her and her 3 siblings had to race to see who would get the biggest slice of cake. She lost but her older sister shared a bite with her. She shuddered back to reality and put a hand to her stomach. She could almost taste that bite of cake. That one, single, sweet bite of glorious cake. Oh,what she would do to get to go back and win that race and eat her cake. She picked up her cello again. This was a gift from her mother. It had belonged to her great-grandpa. He was a world famous cello player but he disappeared a long time ago. She turned to Haley. What do you want to do now?

"Yes, you do!" Haley said convincingly to the girl when she noticed that she didn't even know her name. "Sorry, what was your name again?" Haley asked her nicely. But anyway, Haley was convinced that she was a great player, she could have listened to her several more songs.

She did not really have an answer to her question. "Mh, I don't know, I had no plans for today. I was actually on my way to the common room". Haley laughed briefly. "But if you want to practice a little bit more, I'd be happy to leave you alone." She still had an uncomfortable feeling that she just walked in here and interrupted her practice. Haley noticed the warmth in her cheeks and was sure she was turning red.

"But if you like, we can meet later in the common room and talk a little bit." Haley offered her quick after her answer and smiled at her. She would like to meet the girl, after all they had at least one thing in common. According to the songs she played, she was probably from Ireland too.

Haley took her mind off for a moment and found herself back in the wonderful nature she missed so much. The breeze that went through her hair and the fresh sea air in her nose. She missed Ireland so much but lucky for her her parents and her often went to visit her father's family there and Haley was able to refresh her memories of this country and see old friends again.

Sorry, what was your name again?
My name is Romah but you can call me Hazel. That's my middle name.
But if you like, we can meet later in the common room and talk a little bit.
A smile tugged a Hazel's mouth. This girl seemed very nice and like someone she could be good friends with. She considered her request to talk to her later that day. She decided to way the pro's and cons. Pros; She would make a new friend, this seemed like someone she would want as a friend, and she was Irish. Hazel chuckled at that last one. Cons: She didn't really know Haley, she is probably from Ireland so she might know some of my families checkered past and making friends was never easy for Hazel. She peeked up at her face and saidPlease don't take any offense but I might need some more time for a decision. If I do say yes I will tell you later before dinner. She put her Cello back in it's case and hid it in the closet where kids put their instruments. She hid it in the back and picked up her sheet music and backpack. She looked at Haley and for a split second a vision of what it would be like if she said yes popped into her brain. I've made my decision. See you later. And she walked out.
