It was a Saturday, and Norina still felt like she should be studying. She woke up before any of her fellow Hufflepuffs and made her way out of the common room. With her books in hand, she found herself making her way to the grounds rather than the library. The crisp fall air was drawing her towards the grounds of the school and she found herself sitting under a rather large tree that looked different from her world back home.

She nestled herself into the base of the tree and opened her first textbook. She needed to step up her reading in history if she ever hoped to pass the class. Although the class was so far different than anything she had ever known in the muggle world, it was still quite difficult to stay awake long enough to take valuable notes to help her study for exams and homework.

With a sigh, she flipped the page. If she had been asked even a year ago if she ever imagined herself at a wizarding school, she would have laughed in their face. Yet, here she was learning about werewolves and potions that could heal the drinker. Never in a million years did she ever see herself learning about magic and learning about a new aspect of her life.

She could get a job in the wizarding world and never need to work a day on the farm. It would be such a dream to never work in the muggle world, following in her father’s footsteps. With a frustrated sigh, she started the reading for her homework. Glancing out at the incredible view before her, she was so content with her life at her new school, but she was lacking in friendship. Will I ever make friends? She thought to herself as she took note of the incredible tree line. Although she loved her housemates, she was finding it noticeable lonely away from home, and could only hope that she would make some new friend very soon.

Medea woke up strangely early that Saturday. Well, early for her past life at home, but now that she was at Hogwarts, she had so much excitement for every little thing that she would always wake up so electrically charged and ready to go. Even on the weekend. She had spent those almost two months studying like crazy, as she really REALLY wanted to make her family proud. After all those years of stories about how amazing Hogwarts was and what an honour it was to be in Lady Ravenclaw’s house as well, she had so much to prove!
All those thoughts and all that excitement and desire to learn everything she could, explore every corner and make her family proud kept her so busy that now, she realized she had no one to spend the weekend with.
Well, of course, she had chatted now and then with her housemates, studying together, walk to the classes together, eating together… even having some game night in the Common Room together. But friendship was something else entirely. And since she lived such an isolated life before Hogwarts… her relationships were a blank space that she desperately wanted to fill in.

As she had woke up so early, when Medea arrived in the Great Hall for breakfast there were barely anyone’s there, so eating took a very short amount of time. How could she fill up that day? Walking out of the Great Hall, she found herself wandering towards the gate to the park outside. Well, why not? She could very well study outside, she thought. She had brought a couple of books and her notebook with herself, as she knew that she could not waste all the weekend without study. She had a very boring History of Magic essay to write, and she had been postponing that for days. As her mother was a historian, she always made history funny and exciting for her, but now that she was actually studying her, she had realized that not all history is so fun and exciting and was quite struggling at focusing for so long. She definitely preferred the more practical classes. Her attention was just erratic, to say the least.

Outside in the park, Medea could not refrain from smiling. What a wonderful day it was! She knew she had to enjoy every single bit of fun before the winter arrived, as in Scotland autumn is definitely too short. Humming a tune that reminded her of her little sister, she headed straight back to her favourite reading spot, a very nice and big tree that had just the perfect place around its trunk to just sit and relax. But as she was almost there, ready to sit down… she realized that someone else was already sitting on the other side. What should she do? Greeting the stranger? Or pretend to haven’t seen them and just sit there, ignoring them? that didn’t sound very polite and moreover, wasn’t she all busy complaining that she didn’t have any friends just half an hour ago?
Finally, Medea took the courage with her hands and turned to the other side of the tree, where she saw another very young girl, probably her age, studying. She had a familiar face, they probably had shared a room during some classes, but she was positive she had never spoken to her or even said hello. Looking at her for an awkward moment, she saw she was studying History of Magic. Poor girl.
“Ahm hello! I hope I don’t bother you – she started – I love this tree to study to, so is it a problem if I join you? It’s a way too good of a day to stay close inside!” she said with a bright smile, trying to fake some confidence she clearly didn’t own.

She flipped another page of her textbook for her History of Magic homework. While the class was rather boring, she found the reading rather interesting. Her classmates in the muggle world were probably reading about Vikings and the history of the country, she was learning about gargoyles and goblins. Those that grew up in the wizarding world were probably used to the repetitive stories that they had already heard from relatives or parents, but Norina wasn’t sure she would ever get used to learning something new about her new world.

Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a fellow student.

“Ahm hello! I hope I don’t bother you. I love this tree to study to, so is it a problem if I join you? It’s a way too good of a day to stay close inside!”

Norina blinked as she looked up, the student looked close to her age and she seemed familiar to her. They probably had a few classes together, but Norina suddenly felt guilty for not introducing herself sooner. This is why you don’t have friends. She thought to herself. You’re too focused on school and not on friendships.

“Oh! Of course! There is plenty of room for both of us to enjoy the day!” she smiled and moved over to make more room.

She placed a piece of parchment in her book so she wouldn’t lose her place in her reading, “I’m Norina Evans, it’s nice to meet you!” She looked at the fellow first-year, very excited to possibly make a new friend outside of Hufflepuff.

As the unknown girl greeted her with a kind smile, Medea couldn’t avoid smiling back. She was glad the girl was not annoyed by her presence and happy that she even wanted to meet her instead of just keep reading. “She looks like a nice girl” she thought in her mind. “It wouldn’t hurt for you to actually make some effort and try to get to know her” she added, convincing herself to go past her natural social awkwardness.

“So nice to meet you, Norina! You have such a cute name! I am Medea, Medea Darkwaters, first-year Ravenclaw! Oh but I’m sure that you already know… I think we did some classes together right?” she said to the girl, sitting down next to her and taking out some books from her bag.
“You know, ever since I arrived at Hogwarts I always try to spend the most of my time outside, I think this place is amazing to study… unless a chatty girl prevent you to do so” she laughed at herself. “What are you studying? Maybe we can help each other’s out, I wanted to tackle some History of Magic, but every time I try I feel like sleeping” she added with a chuckle.

She really didn’t have people to study with at that point, and her mother always told her that a good study buddy was the key to success at school, because you give them strengths and focus, and they give that back as well. Of course, in her Common room, it was quite easy to form study groups and help each other’s out, but it was a bit different. She still had to form any meaningful connection, but she also wasn’t really putting herself out there. Turns out, when you have that many subjects to follow and great expectations about your grades back home, you really have very little free time.

So sorry for the delay! My work has been quite a mess!
