The Fall Ball (Masquerade)

A muffled grunt could be heard from a fluffy white pillow. "Gah don't pull so hard, my hair is not that thick!" She moved her head to the side to give the girl standing above her a glare. Annie had been excited to go to the ball but as the time drew nearer she became more hesitant. It had definitely already started and she was going to be late, but not in the fashionable sense. The other girl, Frost had agreed to help her with her hair, thank Helga she was so nice because the brunette had not clue what to do with her hair. She usually just left it down or did a loose braid. This time she wore it like a braided crown-bun sort of thing and it was an up-do something she normally would have stayed away from.
As soon as her hair was done she shoved on her heels, yet another thing she would have rather avoided wearing but they were just too cute and perfect with her short, yet still fairly modest dress. She hobbled around with one shoe on and nearly fell over. Great her clumsiness was already coming into play. At least she wouldn't be stepping on anyone's shoes since she didn't have a date. A pang of sadness washed over her before she shook her head, which was a good test to see if her hair stayed in, which it did thankfully. The girl did a one over in the mirror before hugging Frost and fleeing to the ball. She had decided to go to the masquerade while she believed Frost was going to the costume party. If she got overwhelmed or awkward she would find her way back to her older friend and seek comfort.
Annie's heels clacked down the hallway until she paused at the door. Without overthinking things for once she opened the door and stepped into the beautifully decorated room. Everyone looked elegant and many couples or friends were already dancing, chatting or eating. She did spot a rather familiar badger face, literally. The brunette approached her Head of House and poked him in the back between his shoulder blades, which was almost as far as she could reach. "The only person that I know who would wear a brown suit to a formal dance. Speaking of, how about it Doc? Lazing around doesn't seem very in character of you, lighten up I don't think anything too bad will happen.." The short badger held out her hand, a soft smile on her face. Well, she was going to make the best of her night, date or not and make sure others had fun too.

Seemingly in the blink of an eye, or what certainly felt like that span of time. What had started out as Quinn turned into a small group of mostly people he knew. Really the exception to this rule was a person he never met before but she introduced herself to the young Breana as Jay. Quite bold of her really. First Breana interrupted Quinn's tender moment with his love, and then Jane interrupted the interaction between the three. Quite funny really if one were to think about it in such a manner.
This Jay was dressed in attire that resembled something he vaguely saw once. It started with a Z but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He was sure it would come back to him if he thought on it enough. Anyway whoever they were they looked dapper and had green hair that looked a bit off but also seemed to fit he guessed. He wasn't one to judge to really. Harlin on the other hand...
'Oh is that me queue to critique her outfit. Well obviously I'm loving the vibe she's going for but that green hair? No I think it clashes with the whole aesthetic. Maybe if they focused more on styling their hair to match with the outfit then it would come off much better. But they can look on the brightside. Their fashion sense is leagues above this big dumb giants. I mean who wears a bow tie and suspenders with a t-shirt!?'
'Harlin I feckin swear. So help me I will shove you back down there given the chance if ye don't stop that. And what do you mean my style is horrendous. My style is amazing thank you! I'll have ye know Nico and Santario both love me style!' He verbally huffed and had somewhat strained expression on his face. He had blanked out for a moment while having this intense discussion with Harlin. Outwardly it would look like he just zoned out and intensely stared at the poor Jay. Shaking his head a bit he started to blush rather intensely, moving unconsciously closer to Nico. Where he then placed a very large but gentle hand on her shoulder sticking close. It was clear the two had a close relationship by the manner in which they interacted.
"Oh hey Ro ro! It's been awhile. Ye look so lovely are ye here with anyone?" So much was happening and Quinn did his absolute best to keep up. Taking bows and trying to greet everyone equally. In all honesty it was a fantastic feeling. He wasn't afraid, nervous, or unsure. He was just his usual goofy self!

'Real smooth. I'd be impressed except everything you do ceases to impress me. Love ya Queenie!'
Quinn scoffed quietly frowning before squeezing Nico's shoulder lightly. Just then an unfamiliar looking student with a very familiar voice and raven black hair introduced themselves. "Heh. Ye look as lovely as the full moon in the clear midnight sky on a starry night." Bit of a word fumble but he bowed slightly flashing his usual smirk. Not one to give mixed signals he went even further on the cheesy scale. "Though ah'm sure the one who stole me heart would disagree." Laughing softly, he looked between Sanrio and Nico much more relaxed and confident then he had appeared at any other ball. "Hope ye can forgive me playful words. I realize they may not be appropriate, but its hard not to be honest."
'Look at you Queenie. Trying to be a ladies man. Not that you know what that is but I'm proud of you. Between the Dhampir and the raven haired queen who looks like she'd gut you for the slightest insult. I'm really excited to see who kills you first...you know granted you fuck up. I mean sure I die too but right now I'm having too much fun to care so suck it Paul Bunyan.'
Harlin was not going to ruin this moment for him. As Breana came up to him and was tugging on his clothing, "Ah hold on one moment Bre. Forgive me for this interrup..." He trailed off getting a similar bad feeling to the previous ball. But he didn't see Kyle around, so why were his hairs beginning to stand on their ends. He remembered all too well that last 3 years and refused to make the same mistakes of the past. Harlin and his own safety be damned. Not even a minute later as he turned he heard and saw it. The sound of a chair being planted firmly on the floor. "What was th-" He was intterupted by a very familiar figure, and internally he sighed. Not because he was sad, but because he felt sorry for Erin Ryan.
'Hey look it's the crazy snake! Oooooooh do you think she'll cave in that annoyingly handsome face of yours. Oooooh I should get popcorn for this. Your pain brings me so much joy. And aside from the fact that she's crazier then a k-pop superfan or Mr. Jingles from the asylum I like her. Almost as much as I like Santario.' With another sinister snicker, he seemingly disappeared for the moment.
Quinn didn't have a lot of time to react, but where that should have unnerved him. Instead he felt a strange calmness come over him. He was unsure why but it happened and so instead of trying to dodge. He resolved himself to take the hit staring at Erin the whole time. His emerald-blue eyes growing sharp as he focused his attention on her. This was far different from the previous Quinn's. This one was unnervingly calm and deliberately taking actions. Whether she hit or missed him, he would attempt to grapple her into submission.
Quinn in the process had managed to move slightly away from the group so that if he fell, he wouldn't land on anyone. It was a shame that Rosie had to see this again. There was just a calm look of sadness on his face as all this was happening.

While Thomas pushed down and ignored the nagging question as to why he hadn’t chosen her to be by his side tonight instead of Maria, Santario pushed down the knot in her stomach that she felt when she saw Maria. Even with all of the books she had read describing the feeling, she still didn’t put it together with what it was, and whatever it was had told her that she should hate Maria. But why? That was utterly illogical. Perhaps, he never asked her because Santario wasn’t the type of girl who was formally asked to go to anything… not unless it included her camera. Then again, maybe that was for the best as Santario knew her path in life at this moment reserved her a cell for one in Azkaban. Regardless, it was better that she wasn’t the girl that got asked to these things; the closer she got to people, the more likely she was to betray them in the end if it was her goal vs. them. Not that she knew that for sure, but it was safer knowing that you couldn’t destroy what you didn’t have, and you couldn’t miss it if you didn’t know what it was in the first place.Roleplaying| Santario Martin

Santario smiled as Quinn complimented her and gave a slight nod of her head in response of appreciation. She had hoped for some polite interaction before moving on and possibly finding herself another chair to set herself in for a time while she continued to observe the dance floor, but it wouldn’t take long before those ideas were dashed from her mind. Erin Ryan may no longer have had her infamous indigo hair anymore, but there was no illusion when the beauty made a direct beeline for Quinn with her chair. “Quinn- He, of course, already noticed her as well, so her warning would serve of no help, and it looked like he was just going to stand there and possibly take her hit. Well, Santario wouldn’t, not last October and certainly not this October.
Santario drew her wand and levied it at Erin. “Rictusempra!” She was not quiet about casting the spell at Erin for any professors who might be near enough to the group to see what was happening. She hoped if she hit that, the tickling spell would be enough of a distraction that she couldn’t hit Quinn, and if it wasn’t, perhaps it would be enough to help Quinn restrain her.

The Fall Ball (Masquerade)

Caradoc's gaze trailed after the Head of Slytherin before he took position somewhere at the side of the room. Standing almost opposite to her, he'd reckon together they had a better view on the entire room. Of course, he assumed some trouble were to happen. If he had noticed correctly, he had spotted Erin in the crowd. Knowing Healy was going to be close by, he'd have to keep an eye out on that or else- A tap hit him on the back between his shoulders. Turning around, the Head of Hufflepuff would raise an eyebrow in recognising one of his prefects, @Annie Morgan.
"What's wrong with my suit?" He asked with a surprised look on his face. People had told him he looked quite nice in it. Though admittedly, this was his every day suit. The students were likely too used to him wearing it by now, other than the woollen jumpers he often wore. His eyes fell on her hand she offered. "You're looking to dance with… Me?" His eyes narrowed as he wasn't sure if she was joking. The look he gave her very much asked her if she was sure she wanted to do this. "Very well then, miss Morg- Annie. Let's show these walking planks how it's done."
He'd take her hand and follow her to the dance floor. "Now when you say nothing bad is going to happen..." He spoke in a low voice. "Are you referring to the ball or this dance?" He smirked at the young lady. "Do you want me to lead? Or would you prefer to show this old man how it is done. I seem to have misplaced my cane, you see." He smiled at his own little jab, wondering if Annie was one for inside jokes. In any case, if she was here to catch the attention of any boy or girl, he'd do anything to help her get it. If she was merely hiding, then all she had to do was say the word. Her Head of House was at her service.
If you're reading this... You're awesome.

The Fall Ball (Masquerade)
Verena was anticipating this night for the entire trip. The Fall Ball, a chance for Verena to finally step out of her comfort zone and talk to people. At Beauxbatons, she had a reputation to fulfill, a cool, calm, and collected young lady that was being groomed to inherit the Marigold name and fortune. But tonight, at Hogwarts, a place far away from the Netherlands and her parent's watchful gaze, she could finally step out of her shell.Post Tracker: x x

Of course, the ball wouldn't be complete without accompanying one of her closest friends, Rosa and her date, Florian. The three of them came into the ball with a sense of grace, coming from one of the classier schools of the bunch, but Verena stayed behind the two, distancing herself. It was proper etiquette from where she was from to arrive in groups based on families or couples, which put Florian and Rosa in a different group from Verena. Besides, she didn't want to upstage them.
As they entered, they made their way to a table to relax before dancing. Florian had complimented Rosa's dress, and Verena couldn't help but agree. She always looked great in everything and red was definitely her colour. "Yes, you look great in that Rosa." Verena said, echoing Florian's remark. She had gone for more of a Halloween-esque outfit, the colours consisting of dark purples, blacks, and a hint of green.
Verena had brought her outfit in an entirely different trunk just to keep it pristine. The top was black with dark green ferns shooting out of it, being held together by a satin violet sash, an ornate bejewelled adornment on top of it. The skirt was simple, lavender silk draping down to the floor with black mesh ribbons falling on top of it. And, of course, her mask with different purple and black designs wrapping around it topped with a gilded butterfly.
The mention of her name brought Verena back to reality, where Rosa was asking for a drink. She immediately jumped at the offer to get her one. "I don't think they'll serve that here Rosa, but I'll go grab some for you two if they do. Anything else I can get you?" Verena said, inadvertently sounding like a waitress. This was a school, so they probably didn't serve champagne here, despite it not being a beverage people normally get drunk off of.
So Verena went off to the concessions table, in search of Rosa's favourite drink along with anything else they ask for if they do. Unsurprisingly, they didn't have any champagne, being an alcoholic beverage. As she was looking for the refreshments, she noticed someone stand out to her, a dark figure wearing a mask shaped like a raven skull. He was standing by the entrance and appeared to be observing everyone like a hawk, making the mask a bit more fitting.
She didn't know why, but Verena started walking towards the boy. Perhaps it was because she secretly didn't want to return to the couple empty-handed, perhaps it was because her superego hadn't been explored at all during her childhood, or perhaps it was just plain curiosity. The first thing, and pretty much the only thing, she could notice about the boy, other than his mask, was his eyes. They were cold and blue, looking at passersby with an icy stare.
Verena stopped when she got in talking distance of the boy. "Um hello there?" Verena asked, before realizing this boy probably didn't speak French, not recognizing him from Beauxbatons, "I mean, hello there. I-uh- like your costume." It wasn't really a "costume", but Verena was worried that just saying she liked the mask would imply she didn't like the rest of the outfit. What she was more worried about, though, was if she had just embarrassed herself approaching a boy who didn't want to be approached.

"Oh? I can always leave you if you so wish." She said with a scowl at the sound of his sarcasm. He always had to be in a bad mood, hm? Though what he said confused her, even, as why was she dancing with him in the first place? Didn't she hate him? She supposed she did, though it seemed pointless to bicker here..
Though when was the moment that she would tell him she didn't know how to dance? If Lana was to have one flaw, it would be with moving her feet in steady time. Had she paid attention to her lessons as a child she'd not be put in this position, though alas, here they were. Still, she tried keeping up with her date and as she eyed him suspiciously.
She let out a small sigh, shaking her head at her attempts. "What else would you have wanted to do?" She asked quizzically, trying to take the pressures of tripping over herself off her mind. She could have of course gone off with her friend, though they seemed to be having a good time themselves. Though, now that she was here in the moment, she could seem to understand why she hated him so much upon their first encounter.
"You don't like me very much, do you?" She said with a grin, smiling faintly from behind her mask. His expression was unreadable, making it harder to pick out things to comment on.

He cocked an eyebrow as she spoke, quite frankly wondering who she was to ask. Still, he supposed he had nothing better to do than to interact with her. "I could ask the same about you, though I think I can tell." He replied bluntly, eyes lingering on her for a moment. He's never been good with girls, no. Perhaps being rude wasn't the best way to go about something like this, though here he was.
"I hadn't snagged a date in time, obviously." He added unpleasantly. Though his distasteful visage was once broken at the hearing of a spell, or at least an incantation. His head whipped around, glancing at the sound. How mature.. He shrugged and turned around to his previous acquaintance, only to get distracted by another girl further in the back. Rosa? She was pretty, sure.

Gorgeous post header by Lana MonetWhen Louis first noticed her, he seemed at a loss for words. “Hello, Jacqueline.” he finally managed to say after a brief silence, smiling at her. Jacqueline smiled back, glad she had finally found him. After she jokingly mentioned the decorations, the girl thought she heard him say the word "perfect," but there was too much background noise for her to tell until he confirmed it. “The decorations, I mean. They’re- they're perfect.” It hadn't really seemed like was talking about the decorations, especially since he had been looking straight at her when he'd said it, but Jacqueline nodded anyway, taking note of his flushed cheeks.
"Yes, they are quite amazing, aren't they?" she said, looking around at the walls where most of the decorations had been placed. Her gaze swept over the crowds of people as well, many of whom were dancing. A few students were lingering near the snack table just talking as well. When she turned back to Louis, he took a small step towards her before asking what she would like to do. The girl didn't even have to think about it for too long, she knew exactly what she was going to say. "Would you like to dance?" Jac asked him.
When he agreed, she grinned. Jacqueline had been dancing since she was very little, younger than five, and she was very good at it. Taking his hand and leading him into the middle of the room where most of the other dancers were, she stepped a little closer to the boy so they could dance properly. Jac had seen a few pairs around them who were dancing incorrectly, and she made sure that Louis and her were not going to be one of them.
Closing her eyes for a brief moment, the girl listened to the music for a few beats. The song was slow, a little slower than she usually danced to, but it would do. Opening her eyes once more she looked up at Louis with a content smile on her face as the pair started to dance. It almost felt as if nothing could go wrong right then, and Jacqueline was happy to believe that, even if it was just for a little while. For the mods:

Howard took another sip of his drink before smacking his lips and letting out a sigh of satisfaction. “Think you might be right Fal. Could make a fair bit of coin if I bottled it up. Can see it all now. Howard’s Fiery Pumpkin Smash!” He joked with her as his free hand swiped through the air, mimicking a banner or advertisement. “You just try and keep up with me once I make my fortune.” A smile that matched her own crossed his face as they continued to be silly with each other. It would be an uncommon site for anyone that knew him to see him acting such a way, but it was a side of his personality that he only shared with Falentra.
The pair would eventually ease up on the physical humor as prying eyes potentially came there way and as Howard looked to the dance floor a bit of worry would come to his face. Fortunately for him, when he suggested dancing his date was kind enough to spare him. “Thanks, Fal. I would if ya wanted, but you’re right, wouldn’t wanna look like any of these gits. Ruthless and relentless criticism for all then.” Howard would offer a wink as she nudged against him. As serious as the pair may seem to their peers, it was nice for him to have someone to share his cynical humor with.
Falentra’s eyes would eventually make their way back to the crowd and not long after she would single out a familiar face. “Yeah, I know em’ That’s Thomas Lestrange. Thought you mighta known him, Slytherin Prefect and all, but we go back a ways. Got caught up in all that funny business with me. Know what I mean.” Howard gave her a look that would indicate his ‘not be be spoken of aloud’ dealings with certain dark creatures. “But he’s alright. Not sure if we’re friends or what. Kinda depends on the situation I suppose. Could go either way, I reckon.” Thomas and he did have some unfinished business that could push the relationship either way, but now was not the time to delve too deeply into the subject.
Just as Howard thought of asking Falentra if she’d like an introduction another student suddenly appeared before them. He would have to blink a couple times before he recognized the newcomer as their mutual friend Aurelia. Well, the term friend was a stretch for him as it was another relationship he had been working to repair, but he would greet her as such all the same. “Hey, Aurelia. I like your...” before Howard could offer a compliment it became clear that she was distressed and needed Falentra’s help in an urgent way. He would look to his date and nod in a way that urged her to help her friend. As the two scurried away, Howard would breath a sigh of relief. Girl stuff. Yikes.
As the girls were taking care of whatever it was they needed to be taking care of, he simply leaned back against the wall and continued to enjoy his beverage. It wouldn’t take long for them to return however. “Everything alright?” He asked the them. Aurelia would quickly nod in the affirmative and Howard was fine to leave it at that, but something seemed off as she kept looking over her shoulders. “You sure?” His gaze would follow hers and soon enough he would notice a boy approaching and he look anything but pleased. Aurelia would turn and take a few paces away from Howard and Falentra to greet this mystery man. It was clear that their conversation was heated. “Who the hell is that?” He asked Fal, but before they could even try to figure it out the other boy would look past Aurelia and point directly at Howard. “Looks like they let anyone... or should I say anything here at Hogwarts.” The boy nearly spat as he hurled his insult.
Howard slammed his drink down on the table next to him and quickly closed the gap between himself and the other. “The hell you say to me?!” His voice was raising quickly. To him his comment was surely about his Dhampirism and it was a subject that Howard was very touchy about. This was going to escalate quickly.

Mentioning: @Rafael D'Spacito as Hanzo & @Marion DavenportI snort at Hanzo's claim of my being frightened. "Was not. Startled me, no more." I retort in Russian. Still shaky, but getting better... I hope. "Phantom of the Opera," I respond to Hanzo's observation of my costume.
"And the mask... well, I thought the color scheme fit nicely. Your outfit is... for lack of a better word... on-trend?" I jest lightly.
As he extended a hand to my brother, I leaned forward a bit, lowering our height enough for Piérre, still small compared to our tower, to lean down and take his hand. After the shake, I stand back up again, readjusting Hanzo's weight comfortably again. His animated movement causes me to sway at times, and at the tightening of his arm around my throat, I let out a small, warning choke and then readjust his weight again. "Careful there. Y'don't want your free ride to just pass out on you, hm?" I smile at Piérre. Yes, I'd heard a bit about Gryffindor's losing streak, but I also knew that despite odds, Piérre seemed to have a way to turn misfortune into good luck, no matter the circumstance. And that little comment about my playing on the Durmstrang team... well... "Aw, c'mon now. Piérre's probably a better Keeper than me. I was a human cannonball that game, you remember? This little Demiguise could probably block and score better than I ever could." Even with my claim of sub-par-ness, I feel my face turn red. Certainly, I had shortcomings, some of which were more blatant than others... Leave it to Hanzo to find the good in any person.
"Not importance, I thought it." I murmur to Hanzo with a laugh in fellow Russian. "I impress it quite a bit in Durmstrang..." Indeed, I had made passing remarks, especially when speaking of Yefim's... instantaneous actions, that a person acted like Piérre, something that perhaps confused a few people, but supposed that it was an inside joke. "Never asked, never mentioned." I raise an eyebrow inquisitively.
A young girl, still older than me or my twin, possessing long blonde hair and a resplendent pink and bejeweled outfit drew close and I turn away from Hanzo to focus on this new guest. "Hello." I nudge Piérre. "Friend of yours, Gemello? Well, she looks lovely, so I've got to give you partial credit, hm?" I bite my tongue, smiling at him.
But instead of focusing attention on him, she speaks to me. Asking if I am the Gryffindor Quidditch Player. Her voice is even, if a little loud in an attempt to be heard over the sound of the ball. I don't blame her, the Ballroom is beginning to get a little crowded after all. Hanzo slowly backs off of me, gently hopping to the ground. I give him a side eye, quietly asking why he felt the need to jump down, before smiling quaintly and speaking to the girl. "Ah, I'm afraid not. I used to attend here as a Gryffindor, yes, but I'm actually a Durmstrang attendee." Reaching out, I snag my brother before he has a chance to run off, pulling him in a headlock and mussing his hair.
"If you're looking for the Gryffindor Quidditch All-Star, this is the one. My big twin brother." Try to ignore the fact that I am taller and stronger than him... I thought to myself. "Pleasure to meet you though, madam." I tip my head to her.
Nudging Piérre again, I offer him a lopsided grin and a wink before tapping Hanzo's shoulder. "Leave bird love, yes? Dance?" I offer a hand to him. A part of my warns me to back down... but perhaps it is the atmosphere... perhaps it is just the night. I just want
to have fun with a close friend. I don't want to be paranoid forever.
Should he agree to dance, I would grab his hand and pull him towards the outskirts of the dance floor, near the portraits of dancing couples. Maybe they could help me resolve my two left feet...

He was genuinely intrigued by Hanzo, and above all, he wanted his brother's friends to be his friends too, no matter the long distance relationship. "We did have a rough season... but this year is a new year, and I'm a first-string! This is my first performance! Ta-Da!" With a flourish, Piérre spun in a tight circle, laughing the whole time.
Piérre waited for his jesting to set in, but Romeo seemed to be distracted by something else. "Romeo? Hallo? Something wrong?" At his twin's remark, Piérre quirked a brow. He didn't have a date...? "Huh?"
A girl was coming towards him; a girl with a beautiful pink and black dress that caught every speck of light, and with long golden hair. Blonde, Piérre knew, just because he had grown up with it a bit in Britain ad he was just starting to get used to it. She didn't look like anyone that he had met before. At Romeo's little jeer, Piérre flushed for a second before snorting. "Hey, knock it off! Maybe she's just coming over here to talk to you, ya tree!"
Indeed, she did seem attracted to Romeo first, asking if he was the Gryffindor Quidditch Player. Piérre tipped his head, a touch confused by this predicament. Well... this was kind of awkward. Yea, Romeo had been a Gryffindor, but he had never been part of the Quidditch team... Just as he was about to open his mouth, though, Romeo beat him to it, setting the girl on the right path by... Oh no.
Piérre tried to turn and get away from the inevitable, but his brother was just a hair too quick and far too strong, grabbing the slight boy and catching him in a signature headlock, mussing his hair while he was at it. "ROMEOOOOO!!!" Piérre wailed, trying to break away and secure his broom. After a second, though, Piérre gave up and let Romeo have his way, sighing as the brother introduced the two of them and finally let Piérre go. With a sigh, Piérre listened to Romeo speak Russian to his friend and then back off, leaving the two of them alone.
The air seemed a bit heavier, but despite the discomfort, Piérre managed to smile.
"Hiya! I'm Piérre. Piérre Luigi Marchonné! Nice to meet you!" He nodded, putting his hands behind his back and watching with curiosity as the girl applied something that smelled like roses to her hands and then extended one to him. Without hesitation, Piérre took her hand, firmly but gently, and shook. "Never can be too careful about that darn Flu season, can we, huh?" He jested lightly, indicating the thing that he figured to be a sanitizer of some sort. "That's a really pretty dress, the color suits you!" He complimented her dress, observing the wispy skirt that fell from her hips. "Makes you look like a fairy! You enjoying the dance so far?"Greeting Marion and Shaking her Hand

The Fall Ball (Masquerade)
"Ah- er, sorry Jayden," Thomas offered the girl an apologetic smile, before gesturing vaguely to Elias with a tilt of the head. "They're a little odd, but we can catch up later."
Turning to face Elias, he scrunched up his nose in mild distaste. Thomas always had an adversarial relationship with the other boy, that much was undeniable, but the fact that he arrived at the ball with a date only further soured his mood. Still, he tried his to remain composed, responding in rather clipped fashion to the other boy's taunts. "Nice to meet you, Valerie. Unsurprising to know that you met him under unfortunate circumstances, most people do." Regaining a bit of his composure as he continued on, his nerves seemed to melt away as he insulted Elias. It was a reaction that was so natural, that it almost felt like he was in the Common Room rather than a massive ballroom filled to the brim with people.
"As for Callie, of course, we're not dating. I'd never date a weirdo like her, do you hear her going on and on about fruit? That's weird." It was a surprisingly good-natured jab from the Ravenclaw, lacking the malice that his voice usually held when taunting Elias. Perhaps it was the familiar company that was improving his mood, but Thomas was feeling better now than before. "So, Valerie, I've never seen you around before. You're not in Ravenclaw, are you...?" Though Thomas was fairly anti-social, he tried his best to know the names and faces of most of his housemates. Ever since the incident in the Forbidden Forest the previous year, he realized that being well acquainted with his peers could make the difference between life and death. Or at least, between remaining healthy, or needing a trip to the hospital wing. Briefly, the memory of his leg getting cooked like Thanksgiving dinner flashed in his mind, a thought that was mildly disorienting, and momentarily distracted him as he continued to speak.
After an awkward pause, Thomas perked back up. It was as if he was trying to pretend nothing had just happened at all. "... Oh, Callie, are you ready for the duel in a few days? We're up against two upperclassmen." There was a bit of anxiety clear in his tone, though if it was a result of his previous thoughts, or if he was worried about the dueling tournament, that was unclear.
