2020, Stage 1 Group F: Ravenclaw vs Slytherin

Interacting with @Ruby Cazares and mentioning @Delilah Stewart in passing
Glaring at Ruby, the duelling captain muttered a Flipendo, betting against fate and his current snot-filled sinuses that he would hit.

However marvelous Dmitri was as a spellcaster, he was not as legendary so as to hit an opponent from his periphery. And so his attempt failed. Not quite as bad as his teammate, mind you, but definitely something he could have avoided if he concentrated on the game instead of lambasting on his partner.

Clenching his teeth, Dmitri attempted to calm himself down by breathing through his otherwise dripping nose. He let the air flow out of his pursed mouth, desperately fighting to find his bearing and composure once more.

"Never mind that, now, Cazares." Shaking his wand arm, the boy faced his lone opponent once more. "We will have ample time to discuss your—our—performances after this game." If the girl thought she could hear a subtle threat somewhere in there, she would most probably be correct.

With a flourish of his wand, Dmitri went into the standard duelling stance.

Mentioning: @Delilah Stewart (briefly)
Her Flipendo hit her opponent this time, although it didn't seem to do much. It was nowhere near as successful as Dmitri's previous spell had been, that was for sure. This time, the Slytherin duelling captain didn't seem to be doing well. While Ruby's spell hit even without paying attention, Dmitri's had missed. Granted, it wasn't a complete failure like hers had been before, but she had hit this time and she would be lying if she said that it didn't bring her satisfaction to succeed when he failed. She tried to fight the smirk that threatened to creep onto her face, subtly biting her lip to avoid it. Her eyes glistened with traces of mirth as the boy broke the eye contact, brushing it off by telling her that it didn't matter for now.

Perhaps there was a threat in the promise of a later discussion, but it did not bother her. Hostility was something she was used to, something she knew how to cope with. It was better, easier than being given a chance at peace and friendship. It was more predictable and she never had to question where she stood when hostility or snide remarks were made. She never had to worry about hurting someone or causing someone she cared about to turn away from her. “Sounds lovely,” she responded idly, a lazy, throwaway comment to address his words. The older boy was intimidating, sure, but she was not going to just give in, and whatever she got herself into now was a problem for her to face in the future, not in the present. With the mask of confidence firmly in place regardless of whatever else she was feeling, she readied herself for her next move.

Delilah decided to make a bold move, which could make both opponents hit if nicely conjured. The wind could throw both Ruby and Dmitri off to proceed with more attacking spell. But the fate wasn't on her side and the spell backfired, sending the jolt at her almost knocking her back. The wind wasn't strong enough, but Ruby's spell was. She sent a great spell Delilah's way, nailing her down by knocking her back unconscious. The duel was won. The Slytherin was victorious.

Oh, right, Slytherin captain you say? Yeah, there was a spell sent Delilah's way, but in the explosion of the backfired spell in a symphony with Ruby's made his spell almost invisible, considering the spell went a different way. But considering the impact, he made throughout the duel, he could afford it.

To Dmitri's frustration, his offensive spell once again lost its mark. It was so close, too, the breeze generated by the Flipendo would have visibly ruffled his opponents hair as it whizzed a few inches past her head.

For everyone watching, it would have been understandable. The boy was suffering from a mild case of Mucus Ad Nauseam, hindering his aiming capabilities and weakening his blows. But for the boy, it was unacceptable.
Though his intimidation tactics were obviously effective against Stewart—as evidenced by her pathetically fumbling her own Wind Jinx—Dmitri still felt... ashamed.

Gritting his teeth even as the referee called it a match, the boy raised his wand to the sky and begrudgingly muttered a Verdimillious, the Viridian Vipers' signature ending spell to signal victory. Whether there be cheers or not, Dmitri would not feel quite as victorious as if he had hit that final attack.

Fat lot of good his reprimanding Ruby did. He, himself, was absolutely no better.

As the green, shining sparks of the charm fell all over the duelling arena, all the people would see was Dmitri's retreating back, not caring whether his teammate and subordinate followed or not.
