Jack's handshake felt kind and his joke playful. "Pleasure to meet you too Jack. Have fun the both of you." It was Remi he'd come to see, and that was who he was waiting for as he ate the chocoball. The elongation of his hair tickled, in the way a headscratcher did, and caused him to wonder if a hair growth potion might cause the same kind of sensation to one's scalp. Regardless, the chocolate was delicious and he was a gorgeous cactus with elegant hair now.

"Smooth move Remi," Sylvain whispered back while admiring his friend's adherence to the plan. Sylvain couldn't help but spare a glance towards Headmaster Lear as he spoke of the prank they were about to pull. He felt considerably safer knowing the expert on hags himself was here at the costume party. Enough so as to put his fears to rest on the matter. Though he suppressed some laughter as Solomon devoured a cauldron cake like nobody was watching. It was a good thing the Headmaster's cocoa cravings were as strong as his own. That they shared a sweet tooth made him smile, and gave him the courage to carry through with his plans.

The pair of them, Remi and Syl, had planned to dump a fall's worth of captured chocolate frogs amidst the ball as a fun and harmless prank while attending the costume party. Fall had been productive and their harvest bountiful, now it was time to reap what they had sown. The reward was sweet chocolatey chaos, and they had thirty chocolate frogs split into two hordes to unleash. Though to unleash both now would be too early. He would wait for his daring friend's signal, following his lead. The one they had discussed earlier while planning. "Hey Remi, what was the signal again?" To say that he was nervous was an understatement, but he was determined to impress his friend.
Action:Unleashing fifteen chocolate frogs into the crowd at Remi's signal.

Niffler was a speedfreak in not only quidditch but life in general: he had a short attention span when it came to anything that did not interest him (which was clearly reflected in his academic record.) Food-related anything usually had the least staying power for him, and yet, Niffler’s chai seemed to be having an effect on him. It was actually… really tasty. Warming. Spicy. And so it was gone in moments. Though the drink seemed to completely lack any tricky properties, Niffler was enchanted anyway and quickly procured another. By the time he returned to Yefim’s side, the other boy had sprouted a new spikey hairstyle. Instantly Niffler’s main hand went out to touch the new ‘do and (with his in-built high awareness stats) noted some kind of interesting thought going passing over Yefim’s face. When it came to quidditch the boys could basically read each other’s minds, but in this case Niffler could only smile confusedly as to what Yefim was thinking just then.

Suddenly Yefim had found a new target, though, and Niffler understood that look perfectly well as the other boy stomped off towards the other side of the room. Suppressing a grin, Niffler knew that this was an opportunity for coordinated teamwork. Yelling loudly at some … knight or… some otherwise eccentric and possibly quixotic old guy in a suit of armor, the diversion was already underway. Niffler meanwhile sauntered lazily to the side, back turned to the snack table until just the right moment while seeming to be absorbed with his second chai.

”No costume… no fun,” said Yefim viciously as his big black boots lunged out to crush one of the nearly completed carved pumpkins. While Yefim was making this scene however, Niffler was using his finely crafted kleptomaniacal powers to line his pockets with 3 chocoballs and a pumpkin pasty intended for Mik’s later enjoyment.

Still, if Valentin Schnell was anything, it was fast. His chai done, Niffler had already disposed of his cup and traversed the room to rejoin Yefim’s side when a splash of pumpkin guts collided with Yefim’s face. Well, now that Hogwarts brat had done it. Didn’t she understand that Halloween was about smashing pumpkins and that real art is ephemeral and made to be broken like the finest sand painting?

Diving quickly to the side, Niffler found himself next to the drink table where he snagged a mug of butterbeer as well as a third chai. With a swift singular chug of the chai Niffler leapt towards the offending Slytherin, Bridget, and tried to douse her with the entire mug of butterbeer. Unable to find a reasonable gloat in English without being able to copy off Yefim, Valentin settled for a smug, “Ha!!”

Alas, Niffler critically failed and so dumped the entire mug of butterbeer on his friend Yefim.
Action: Practically inhaling two more cups of chai, very sneakily pocketing some treats for Mik, and running back to Yefim’s aid to splash a pint of butterbeer at Bridget... but misses and so douses Yefim instead
Mention: @Percival Rainwood (as Mikhael Halldorsen)
Interaction: @Flash Holmwood (as Yefim Rumyantsev), @Bridget Collins
Costume: The Golden Snitch, but with poofy sleeves
Open to interactions. If Niffler takes a liking to you he may try to steal something shiny of yours temporarily; you have been warned.

This was a Hogwarts function. Something was bound to happen, as the bulk of the student body knew well, yet at least the current buds of chaos seemed harmless enough... for the time being. Several persons were laughing hysterically, babbling, growing an obscene amount of hair, or had hair standing entirely on-end. Two persons had their heads turned into pumpkins. This madness was intentional on behalf of the party planners, though whether or not the guests were properly braced was anyone's guess. The host in the falcon mask by the door had hollered something about tricks, was perhaps overheard saying there was a fifty-fifty chance the drinks were contaminated as well. The Durmstrang visitor Valentin Schnell, having downed two chai, was sure to suffer something with those odds. As he marched across the Haunted Manor scene to join his heckling friend, his pale hair would tumble towards his waist with Rapunzelian zeal, sent several feet longer by the Manegro potion. Fortuitously for poor Jo Morgan however, her pumpkin juice seemed safe, as no other unsavory effects overcame her.

Tricky treats aside, there was still ample opportunity for less chaotic indulgence. The gramophone continued crooning Weird Sisters in the background, simmering sweetly under the din of friendly conversations and the occasional pop of a Wizard Cracker. One was opened by the mysteriously-garbed Evelynn Decipio, and into her hand tumbled a Jack-o'-Lantern ring with a jolly smile. Yet not everyone was here for wholesome pumpkin-related peace. Yefim Rumyantsev had smashed Bridget Collins' carving, only to have her retaliate by throwing a wet handful of gourd guts into his face. Racing to his friend's aid, the now gloriously maned Valentin Schnell tried to douse the girl with a pint of butterbeer, only to falter and empty the sticky drink all over Yefim instead. The antics of these boisterous Durmstrang boys had evidently been spotted by the falcon host, who was just starting to weave his way across the room. It was the perfect distraction for other agents of chaos to make their move.

A signal shared between them, Remi Yao and Sylvain Indarys emptied out two sacks, sending thirty chocolate frogs bounding into the event. Was it a true-to-scale reenactment of the Egyptian Plagues? With thirty little chocolates bounding about, perhaps not, but partygoers may incidentally step on the sweets hopping through the low fog, or would find a frog leaping on them in an attempt at finding sanctuary.
-This is a moderated event, please do not roll for yourself!

-Your character can pick up the Chocolate Frogs which Remi and Sylvain set loose :chocogrenouille:

-If your character tries a tricky treat, please note it as an action. I will be rolling to let you know how it effects them next mod post. The same goes for wizard crackers, which give gifts (one time- opening additional crackers will yield only candy).

-Tricky Treats contain small amounts of potion and will last for 3 moderation rounds (except Manegro) unless removed. You can move to the masquerade with these effects if you're into that sort of thing, or feel free to say "Pericles' third-year helper" (NPC) cast Reparifors on them (just tag me).

-The Ballroom Masquerade and the Rehearsal Room Costume Party (you are here) are on the fourth floor of Hogwarts, so going between the two doesn't take much time, but if leaving/arriving mention it as an action.

-The next post will take place on the 28th.

Mikael did not think of himself as obsessive. How could he be obsessive over Yefim if he couldn't find it within himself to care? That had been his main line of thinking when he found out Yefim had gone to the ball with Niffler. Mikael shouldn't care because he never cared. Besides, Yefim deserved a friend who could actually connect to him on an emotional level. Yet...Mikael felt strangely cold as he sat in their empty room. He wanted to say he didn't care for Yefim, but he found himself caring who Yefim was with. It was confusing at best, and he didn't like being confused. Especially when it came to feelings. The boy guessed he just didn't like Niffler and the competition he brought in a way.

It had always been him and Yefim since they first met at Durmstrang. Not Yefim and Niffler. Never Yefim and Niffler. Niffler was just a side friend that Yefim had picked up for the summer. Yefim would kick him to the curb soon he just had to. Anger swirled in his chest as if trying to break free from his ribcage. 'That Quidditch boy has another thing coming if he thinks he can just swoop in and steal his-.' Mikael stopped that train of thought as quickly as it had started. He couldn't afford to make himself angry and upset with his wayward thoughts. The last thing he wanted to do was mope in the room all by himself.

Mikael picked up his bag and pulled out the porcelain mask he had brought with him. It was possible he had brought it in case Yefim asked him to go to the Masquerade Ball with him. Though he purposely ignored how true that statement was. Yefim had chosen Niffler over him, so now that mask had no correlation to Yefim now.

Last he knew, the two had gone to the Costume Party rather than the Ball. The boy wondered how Yefim would react if he confronted him at the party. He wondered how Niffler would react. The other boy was quite subservient. He wondered if the other would run away with his tail tucked between his legs just at the sight of Mikael. That thought was enough to bring a small smirk to his face. The boy had been told his mask was quite scary by a couple of other students. Mikael was sure he could turn his masquerade mask into a scary costume.

The boy stood in front of a mirror as he began to piece together his outfit. He wore the majority of his Masquerade Ball outfit. Mikael had kept the dress shirt, pants, and shoes. Though left out the coat that would match his red striped tie. Instead, the boy grabbed his long plain black robe and put it on. The robe was long enough that it covered the majority of his body when clasped closed. He looked like a black shadow and in a way he liked it.

Mikael grasped the black hood and pulled it over his hair. Refusing to look away from the mirror, the boy grasped the porcelain mask. He brought the object slowly up to his face. Sliding it on with careful precision. The boy was unrecognizable and he was overcome by a thrilling sensation. All things considered, Mikael thought he looked very frightening. He couldn't wait to see all the color drain from Niffler's already pale face.

The boy made his way down to the Rehearsal Room. Arriving at the party rather late, though that didn't bother him at all. Mikael wasn't there to have fun so he ignored the treats that lay there invitingly. He had never been a sweets fan, that title went to Yefim. At that, Mikael remembered who he should be looking for.

Mikael scanned the crowd looking for familiar faces. It wasn't hard to spot the pair, but he was a little surprised at what he saw. For one, Yefim looked a little worse for wear. Spiky hair and covered in some weird orange goop. The boy also looked rather wet as if he had been dunked into the Great Lake. Mikael would almost feel bad for the boy if he hadn't abandoned him for a certain someone. The boy strode over to the pair his dress shoes clicking angrily into the flooring. Mikael stopped in front of the two indecision suddenly overtaking him. Had he truly come to a social event just to spite Niffler and Yefim? Mikael didn't know what to do now that he had put himself out like this. He wasn't used to making stupid rash decisions. Mikael's left fingers drummed into the side of his leg as if he were playing a piano. It was a habit he unconsciously would do from time to time. A habit he could not break. A calling card to those who knew him well.

Norina let out a sigh as she watched the other students leave the common room in their costumes and pretty gowns. Some, she noticed, wasn’t dressed for either event. She had convinced herself that there was no reason to go. She had studying to do and had no desire to attend an event that she was sure she had already been to countless times in the muggle world.

But it’s a Halloween event with magic. She told herself as she flipped the page of the book she was studying. Some time had passed before she looked up at the clock and felt a tug in her chest telling her that she ought to go to the event because she would regret it if she didn’t. Besides, she said to herself, you can always study tomorrow.

Trying to hide her smile, she ran up to her dorm and pulled out the costume she had planned on wearing, just in case she did end up going to the costume party. There was no way she would have the courage to attend the fancier of the two events, she was far too awkward to ever get the courage to wear a mask and dance. The fun events awaiting her at the costume party were much more her style.

She pulled on the undershirt and coat for her pirate costume, put on the eye patch, placed the hat on her head, and completed her costume by sliding the plastic sword (that looked quite real, now that she was looking at it) through the belt of her leather pants. She stood and looked at herself in the mirror. Well, there’s no turning back now. She thought to herself as she forced her feet down the stairs and out the door of the Hufflepuff Common Room.

She made her way to the fourth floor and noticed the number of students that were dressed for the ball but her eyes turned to the door where laughter bellowed into the hallway. The costume party was definitely more fun, and she nodded to the falcon-dressed student as she entered through the doors. She quickly realized that she would have kicked herself if she had not attended the event. It was something she had never seen before! Her eyes immediately went to the table where treats awaited her but were quickly distracted by the laughter and the overgrowing of hair she noticed from the other attendants.

Her eyes were suddenly drawn to another student throwing pumpkin guts at one of the visiting students that she recognized from the quidditch match earlier that year. She couldn’t contain the laugh rising in her chest as she witnessed the gourd guts hit him square in the face.

Suddenly chocolate frogs burst into the room and she swatted away one of the small delicious creatures that were aimed towards her face. There’s never a dull moment at this school. She thought to herself as her hand made contact with a chocolate frog and watched as it soared through the room, headed towards a wall. Looking for who was responsible for this moment of excitement, she noticed the student that had helped in the plot and gave him a small smile.

Norina loved this school, and never wanted to return home. After her parents’ lack of excitement through the letters they exchanged, she wasn’t sure if she was quite ready to return home. She shook her head as she turned her attention to the middle of the room and took note of a sign overhanging a very delicious table of treats.

Oh, right! She remembered how the older students had mentioned to the first years that Hogwarts would sometimes include a special surprise at their events. Norina debated whether she should snag a pumpkin pasty and decided that the grumble in her stomach was a clear signal that she needed an extra snack, even after the events that just unfolded before her. She grabbed some pumpkin pasties and, while it was half hanging out of her mouth, popped open a wizard cracker. She finished the delicious treat and washed it down with a glass of pumpkin juice.

Halloween should be celebrated more often. She left the table and turned her attention towards the other students at the event. She noticed that there was a student unable to contain her laughter and was dressed quite wonderfully. Norina made her way over to the student who seemed more dressed for the masquerade ball than the costume party, “I really love your dress!” Tonight, she was trying to step out of her comfort zone. You need to meet new people and make friends! She thought to herself, swallowing the sudden pang in her stomach over meeting new people. She took another swig of the pumpkin juice in her hand, clearly unfazed by how it could affect her.

Lear was beautiful, like a conditioner commercial. Mayhaps there was a breeze that would allow Lear's luscious new locks to wave seductively in the wind. At least that was the image in the Headmaster's mind as the sudden growth of his heard as well as his thinning mane became apparent and evacuated from the bottom.

Some rude boy would make noise from behind the old, nervous man. He would jump with a startle, loud noises unsettled him. He had picked up a package of wizard crackers but when the youngster's voice interrupted his thoughts which were as simple as 'carbs' he soundlessly fumbled the package and it fell on the floor.

Things had been getting better for the older man. He was sleeping better, just not well. Movement and darkness left him restless and agitated. While the curse had been broken, his paranoia abated to an extent, there was a lingering logical worry. How did they get here? Was it truly over? A great deal of the circumstances that surrounded his disappearance were foggy, the nightmares overrode the truth. He would likely never fully recover his nights, but with time like all things, those memories would fade. The good does with the bad. It is something he had learned a long time ago. His regret and guilt were at one point unbearable, now there were weeks that he forgets entirely. Someday this would be just like his daughter.

But the betrayal was deeper here. It hurt more. With a frown, the headmaster would shake his head. Bad memories... Not again. Not today. Not now. He reached for the floor and picked up the small parcel, the wizard crackers he had dropped. He would tear the package open, like a curious child he would play with the item he had recovered for a moment in his hands. Whatever it was, it brought a smile to his face as silly as that might have been.

Pass it on. That was after all the Hufflepuff way.
Action: Open a package of wizard crackers.

Keeping to herself, Serena drank her masala chai as she looked around. A few more familiar faces started to greet her eyes, causing a smile on her face. She was about to turn off to find someone she knew - mostly just to keep herself from eating the entire table of food that was next to her and she was seriously eyeing up. She heard her name. A rather tall man in armour, with a voice, that she once would recognise within an instant. The former head of Hufflepuff had been her to go for many years. She could not see his face under his helmet but a large smile fell on her own as her eyes lit up.

The now Headmaster and her been through a lot. Well... not really, since most of it was in her own head. He had once saved her life, she looked up to him like he was her grandfather. Though, some time after she had somehow gotten convinced that he was trying to actually hurt them - which in hindsight seems ridiculous now. But at the time, she believed that. Things always seemed to go wrong near him - like the lock in or the train. Then... he was barely around Hogwarts. She could not recall seeing him in ages and they were told of a coven of hags... When she saw him - at the summer camp, if she recalled correctly - he seemed so frail and she honestly had no idea why she ever doubted him. He was just a sweet old man, right?

"Headmaster Lear!" She replied with a grin and a tone of voice that was way too excited. Ahem. Acting a bit more professional and formal, as likely expected of the former position she held in the school, Serena resumed drinking her tea as she watched him take some cake. "The chai is very good, if you wanted something to drink, sir," Serena added after a moment or two, just to make polite conversation.

She had no idea he had been kidnapped, of course, or had any idea of what he had been through. She just could not recall seeing him for a while and now... She was just glad to see him. He looked better than he did months prior if she recalled correctly. "Good to see you again too, Professor-" She would suddenly outburst with before putting down her now empty mug and then moving up to him and in an attempt to throw her small arms around him in an awkward hug, if he did not stop her, "I missed you, old man," The words came out in a whisper before she could stop herself, getting a little carried away in the whole thing.

Ahem. Should she really try and hug him or call him an old man? Probably not. But he was Old Man Solo, or Grandpa Lear... He reminded her of her grandpa but... maybe a whole lot taller.

Have a hopping good time then the voice in @Jake Morris' head simply suggested. Ribbit...Ribbit...

Who else is there? The voice would inquire as casual as a parent might ask a child when asking about their day. Jake had found some people that they knew. George was not one of the people the mask cared a great deal for. The boy was a dangerous, poor influence on Jake, but for whatever reason Jake saw the teen as their friend.

Was there any crayons or glitter here?

Probably not, the mask and the voice were perennially disappointed by their bearers. It was the way of the world. There would be no crayons or glitter. [OC: Can you do me a favor and state the locations IC of places you might have drawn "funny squiggly doodles" to make the voice in your head happy that are outside?] The mask would instead resign itself to listening to the the ambiance of the costume party.

Find a pretty girl, maybe a Princess the voice suggested. A princess and a frog... how fitting. I am sure there is someone here that you like. If no crayons-- He would find a better activity than spending time with floor boy.

Time was running out. At the very least the kid could have one nice evening before everything he knew got destroyed by his own hand. For at least this evening, meat a nice girl. Dance. Perhaps become a young Prince.

Some stories should never be told...

Robert's smile from his earlier pun soon turned into uncontrollable giggling. The young boy was a bit confused at first, after all, as funny as all banana-related puns are, they didn't really solicit side-splitting laughter, especially from the person telling it. The more Robert thought about it, the more the chortling didn't feel natural. It was when he realized that multiple other people in the room had suddenly burst out laughing that he turned around and saw, through the joyful tears in his eyes, the sign above the table pronouncing them "Tricky Treats." Of course, this just made him laugh even harder. Turning back to the little group he was in, he managed to squeeze out a couple words between the giggles. "Sorry... about... the laughing," he gasped out as he bent over, holding up the rest of the chocoball as an attempt at explanation. The pumpkin-spiced latte's response to Robert's costume made the poor boy clutch his sides, almost unable to breathe.

It was at this time that he noticed a new addition to their group, or rather, an old one in his case. At first, he didn't even recognize Callista Lovis from the last time they (literally) ran into each other, partly because the uncontrollable shaking of his body and tears streaming down his face made it hard to see, but also because the current elegance of her outfit sharply contrasted the school robes and scrapes that she'd been wearing last time they'd met. Although, the scrapes had been mostly his fault, Robert realized. With a wave, he greeted the hufflepuff. "Hey... Callista!" He grinned through the giggles. "This is such... a peel-easant... surprise!" Not even an inability to properly breathe was going to keep this banana from banana peppering conversation with as many puns as possible.

The Ravenclaw's ears perked up when he learned he'd stumbled into a conversation on pumpkins and dinosaurs. He didn't know much about the latter, as his knowledge of biology was more centered on the micro than paleo, thanks to his mother. However, he could thank Sarah Toukmond for his extensive knowledge on all possible pumpkin-related foods. In fact, this exact topic had actually come up in his letters with Callista. Unfortunately, Robert's current condition kept him from talking too much other than for what he currently regarded as the most important parts of a conversation; greetings, puns, and goodbyes. At this point, all he could do was hope that the effects of whatever had been in that chocoball would wear off quickly so that he could participate more fully in the conversation. However, his chance to participate in a conversation with one person was quickly passing, as Peri was understandably a bit busy running the event, and was needed somewhere else. "Not... a problem! I understand... if you need... to split," Robert wheezed out, shamelessly steeling Quinn's earlier pun.

Robert's laughter was infectious, and Callista had to crack a smile, even if he was hit with a spell, and was not, in fact, dying of natural laughter. She was greeted by the other girl, Quinn, she said was her name.

"Dinosaurs?" Callista repeated. Before she could continue, she was greeted by the boy in the bird mask. However, he was soon pulled away to take care of other matters. "He said his name was Pericles, right?" He hadn't had time to properly introduce himself, sadly. "He seems nice."

"Long time no see, Robert. At least if you're too busy laughing, you won't be able to assault us with your banana puns," Callista teased. "Speaking of that, I'm pretty sure I saw a third year fix someone else's hex. Would you like me to call them?" she offered.

"What were you saying about dinosaurs again, Quinn?" Callista prompted. She didn't know much about dinosaurs herself, but she tried to keep the conversation going. Quinn was a lucky lad to be able to witness Callista during one of the few times she was truly herself, without her shyness to hold her back. Even though Robert and she hadn't been in touch for a while, Callista still considered him one of her closest friends here.

Callista turned her head, scanning the crowd of people for anyone she knew. To her pleasant surprise, she did, in fact, recognize a few people. Jess Malters, for one, was someone Callista was familiar with. She seemed to be with a couple of other students - the girls looked vaguely familiar, perhaps from the boat ride? She winced at the memory of that particular trip.

Callista turned back to Robert and Quinn, hopefully engaging in a lovely discussion.
