Awaking violently with a sputtering cough, Sylvain jolted forward and sat upright in bed so he could clear his airway. In his sleep he'd rolled at least once or twice, so the blanket had become tangled amidst his legs. It seemed that he hadn't been sleeping well since summer break started. Curiously, he'd been having nightmares lately, the ones that returned again and again. The swirling doom of the killing machine that was water, deep and black. Each time it had choked him, and startled him awake. So far, it remained a dream, though why it plagued the poor lad was anyone's guess.
Sloughing the blanket like a cocoon, the eager eagle ambled out of bed and stretched as he groaned. It couldn't have been but five in the morning, but here he was awake and ready to start the day. After pulling on his favorite hoodie Sylvain saw that the humid summer air made face and hair a bit greasy looking. Washing his face and hands in the cold but refreshing water, he collected his satchel and looked himself over in the mirror to make sure he looked like how he was supposed to before leaving the house. Glad for having done so, the boy fixed where the hoodie had become tucked into his jeans. Surreptitiously Sylvain decided to make for the hills before the first light of day shown upon camp.
Still a bit groggy, the boy pulled his hood up and rubbed his eyes with his sleeved hands. Peeking around camp, he saw that only the earliest of risers were up. Some appeared to be packing, others breaking down what was surely the last use of their fire pits. Plenty of others still yet snoozed, dreaming of whatever bliss could carry them away from whatever fantasy outshone that of the already amazing wizarding life. The wee hours of the morning held a certain charm to the witty scholar, who found an astounding lack of words for the whimsical way it oft caught him by surprise.
Making his way up the hill near the center of camp, Sylvain followed the path worn by the heels of boots, flip-flops, sandals and sneakers up to the crest of the vantage point from which he fully intended to receive the sun's blessing. Quietly, the morning birds chirped and tweeted as they flit from branch to branch in search of friendly company to witness the charming glow of dawn. Sylvain himself stood quietly with his hands in his front pockets, and his hoodie zipped up. It would have been exactly the kind of moment @Lizzie Verdine was likely to accidentally bump into him. If that was what fate had in store for them.

For once, Lizzie had actually made an effort to look good. She normally did look good but that was because it was just natural. Except, for the last few days she had really been just having a lazy week and done nothing special to make her self feel good about everything that happened. Lizzie did not want to go home looking like some raccoon that had not groomed themselves for weeks.
It wasn't unusual that Lizzie was up awake early. She was always a very early bird but never really acted on it other than sitting in her bed and staring at a wall for a few hours or maybe getting down a tune that had formed in her head. It wasn't always one that progressed past the basic base line but it was always best to get them down just in case.
Lizzie sighing and looked around her tent quickly. It didn’t look like anyone else was awake and a did not want to disturb them being making a nose of packing up. She did want to be read to just straight up grab her bag and leave but that wouldn't be very nice and could seem quite rude to some of the girls in her tent. So it would just be best to pack up along with them.
Sighing, she dragged herself out of bed and out of the tent. She wasn't especially sure if she was allowed out at that time but other people seemed to be mingling in small groups so what was the harm in having just a small walk? Some rules were meant to be broken anyway.
The sun had barely risen as Lizzie trenched up what seemed to be a mountain but could have just been a small pile of rubble. She did like to over exaggerate things a lot more than they needed to be. Crossing her arms she got to the top of the hill. She planned to circle around and get back to the tent just before her tent mates had woken up.
Just like she did every other time, Lizzie closed her eyes slightly and took another sigh while her steps still continued. It was not a wise idea to do that and Lizzie had learnt her lesson but just had never took it in properly. Maybe it was a Verdine thing where they didn't understand their own mistakes.
As planned, she knocked into someone and opened her eyes. It wasn't a big knock as she had expected. Just a tap at the shoulder. "Oof, sorry." She smiled slightly and then stopped to look at the person, "I really need to try stop closing my eyes while walking." Lizzie took a breath and plopped herself onto the ground and lent on her arms looking out into the distance.

A tap at his shoulder was all he needed to suspect his unexpected guest, but the words of apology that came after could only have been spoken by the stunning charmer herself, Lizzie Verdine. She had a particular knack for stumbling in the dark with her eyes closed. Sylvain had, at more than one point during his first year, earned enough bruises to prove it.
The Forest was a lasting and horrifying experience for him, and the two had suffered through it together. The young mage wondered if the wandless witch remembered their last few moments before falling unconscious. How remarkable she had been when she helped him to free Pericles. Sylvain held onto hope that his actions had helped protect her from more trauma. Sylvain also held onto the hope that his actions had helped protect the others.
Un-offended by the act of blindly bumping into him, as he had grown quite used to Lizzie bulldozing him over, Sylvain merely gave her a relaxed smile in return. Nervously, the sheepish lad turned to greet the surprisingly built-like-a-brick-house rockstar. Seeing her well organized appearance, all he could do was think. Here it was, still early enough in the morning that the sun hadn't succeeded in rising, and Lizzie was already radiant beyond the glow of most people he had met. Let alone held the hand of, he felt intimidated."I really need to try stop closing my eyes while walking."
Before he had a chance to see the sun fully rise, the musical genius managed to strike him off key, causing him to blush. "Hey Lizzie" he said, voice cracking, "uh... nice to see you again." Poorly, Sylvain did his best to hide his surprise, but flustered and sputtering he finally found his nerve and relaxed his stiff-awkward smile. "You certainly could afford to keep your eyes open."
Already experiencing an incredibly tumultuous roil of nightmares Sylvain felt that her presence was a much needed distraction from his own issues. Being the dreamer he was, the wizard loved being distracted and perpetually sought something new to hear and see. Endlessly, he craved new experiences. Admittedly it was better to relax with someone whom you trusted and who already wanted to be with you, but even if they'd only ever managed to bump into each other on accident Sylvain appreciated Lizzie's company the same as anyone else.
"Stay awhile won't you? The sun is about to rise." Lizzie was clearly not seeking to please him in the slightest. Whatever time she had spent fussing over appearances mattered to Sylvain as much as they seemingly did to her. Almost giggling, he watched as she plopped herself onto the muddy wet grass on the ground before he could even finish the invitation to observe the sunrise with him.
Awkwardly unsure of what to do, Sylvain sat beside Lizzie in the grass, electing not to lie down, but instead crossing his legs as he eschewed his slips to put his feet in the grass. The morning dew was cold and wet on his toes, but the feeling of the earth beneath his feet helped ground him, helped to remember that this was all real. The wounds on his feet had been completely healed by magic.
Wriggling forward and leaning his torso down so that his head hovered just a little upwards and to the left of hers, Sylvain sat as close as comfortable for the pair. "Do you usually get up this early or was there something on your mind?" They still had a little while until the sun rose, so he figured a question couldn't hurt, and he certainly wasn't against getting to know the girl who didn't need magic to save her friends.

Lizzie quickly looked up to see a long lasting friend of hers. No other than Sylvain. “Oh, umm.. hi Syl.” She said bringing her hand up to her neck. He actually made her quite nervous and jittery. She had always had that lingering feeling in the back of her mind that she needed to make a good impression on him. Lizzie quickly straightened out her thought process and continued, ”I’m sorry once again. For the forest and everything.” She slightly winced as she mentioned the terrible time that was the pairs first meeting.
It was not one of the best places to meet someone who would probably become a very big part in your life. All the dark and depressing trees did not lighten the mood up at all. Honestly, Lizzie could not remember a lot of the situation even if it was annoying it was probably for the best. They did not need a bad tempered Lizzie Verdine walking around the corridors of Hogwarts that could lash out at any moment. Who knew what kind of injuries she could cause to unsuspecting first years!
“Maybe I don’t want my eyes open. After all, blind people don’t need them so why should I.” She asked putting her hands on her hips, "It can't be one rule for one group of people and a different rule for the next." She laughed and placed her hand on heart quickly to try stop herself from hyperventilating. She was pretty sure Sylvain did not want to watch the girl die from laughter. However, there was no logical reason why she would want to walk around with her eyes closed. If someone asked Lizzie blatantly on why she did it the girl would answer back with a small shrug and carry on with her day like nothing had happened.
Lizzie had not wanted to get the habit of knocking people over. It had happened by accident. Her whole 'good impression' was no longer even existent while the blonde had a 'knock them over on the first meeting' policy. There was no way she going to get anywhere in life with those bad manners.
She had settled into the grass with the intent of just sitting there for a while enjoying the company of the boy next to her. She had no other plans than to pack her bags and leave the summer camp area. It was not a place she wanted to stay anymore considering the events that had happened prior to her hibernation. It would be a nice bit of bonding time for the pair to have after the experiences they had suffered together.
Lizzie soon sighed as the question he had asked her ringer in her ear. Her mood changed quickly from the laughing spunky girl to someone who just remembered all their problems. “I normally wake up early but do not act on it. I... I have had something on my mind for the past few days.” She admitted and looked over to the boy and smiling slightly, “Do you have the early bird instinct in you? Or have you also have something lingering in your subconscious.”

"I don't need you to apologize for the events that took place in the Forbidden Forest," Sylvain said with a warm kindness emanating from his scrawny frame. "and I do not feel as though I could hold it against you anyways." Warily, the wizard's eyes began searching all around them as if he were blindly stumbling around for the right words to say.
Words were hard to come by, especially while he still preferred to find them in books. "What I'm trying to say is that even if I could hold it against you, I don't think I want to." The residual warmth of his heart had stretched itself into the curve of a slight smile. Syl then shifted forward onto his knees so he could better see over the grassy knoll that the pair of early birds were perched upon. Was the sun coming yet? Who cared? Lizzie was more interesting.
As Lizzie's hands left her hips, and sheltered her heart from a cacophony of mad laughter, the resulting muffled giggling that was hiding her hyperventilation would bring the wistful lad some feeling of safety. With that safety, the feeling of security. Sylvain would have loved to watch her die from laughter atop this hill in the dark as the two struggled to find each other.
The warmth of the sun might then greet them as they forgot about the world and all of its problems. After all the pain and suffering they had been through, laughter would have been exactly the medicine the both of them needed. Fortunately Sylvain would have to keep trying to make her smile, there was still time to make the wandless witch and himself just a little bit happier.
"Fair enough, I will agree that you don't need a reason to stumble blindly into the future." A smug grin would accompany his still kind and playful tone. "Though I would like to point out that blind people at least keep their wands in front of them as they do so." He wouldn't press the issue further if she brought it back up. Lizzie was welcome to bump into him whenever she pleased. Syl would never mind. It was then that he thought to get her a lanyard for her wand. Where was that thing slipping off to all the time?
Despite her first impression upon him, Sylvain had never felt the need to demand any sort of apology from Lizzie. Verdine seemed perfectly content being exactly who she was from the moment she met him. For that reason, Sylvain had never been as shy and awkward as he typically was around others. In just the short time they spoke to one another, he already felt as though the witch lived her truth out loud. Bold and experimental were words that came to mind.
These traits were typically displayed in defiance of what others expected from her. If Lizzie was going to continue being so blunt, Sylvain figured she was going to eventually need a friend who kept things from getting too heated. Or at the least, he thought she might like a friend who wouldn't leave her when the world around her was on fire. She deserved as much.
One sigh came from his hill crest companion. It only took the exhausted exhalation of exasperation to indicate to Sylvain that Lizzie's silence marked a significant change in her mood. That sigh made him very anxious. The eerie calm of this turbulent morning had been predicated by the violent maelstrom of his mind at peace. Combined, the two feelings had left him all too ready to escape the issues that lie in the deep trenches of his thoughts.
Those were forgotten memories and feelings now. Feelings that were left to hang and had become dried out as a result. They were nearly unrecognizable at this point. "I tend to wake up pretty early on my own, but..." his voice lingered, worried that telling her about the violent nature of his dreams might bring undue worry upon someone already down on their luck and so troubled as she seemed to be.
Finding resolve in a handful of grass, wrenched from its roots and tossed into the air above them like verdant confetti, Sylvain would attempt to meet Lizzie's gaze for the first time. Maybe it was too dark to see his eyes properly, or perhaps it was just too much for his shy feelings to bear, but opening up was difficult so he would look away if she caught his stare. "But this morning it was just a bad dream that woke me. Nothing for you to worry about." Honesty, being what she had given freely, was what she was going to get from him.
"What sorrow robs you of your sleep? Er, what brings you to wake at such an early hour?" Genuinely curious, he wondered why Lizzie would rather stumble blindly into strangers in the dark than face her issues. Was it loneliness? Was it fear? Maybe it was numbness. Either way, awaiting her response, his gentle and kind smile would not dissipate. He could be patient for now. Syl could listen.

"That's good then!" She sighed. Lizzie did not like when people had something against her. It made her feel all icky and gooey inside. The feeling of guilt did not rest upon the girls shoulders well at all. It actually made it harder for her to walk and harder to smile everyday. No one needed a grumpy and sad Lizzie Verdine walking around the corridors. People would want to avoid her even more than they did already!
Slowly blinking her eyelids, she put on a slight smile and nodded her head. "That is a huge relief. I wouldn't want anyone to hold anything against me ever. That's a horrible thing to think about." She really did not like having a negative effect on others. Lizzie brought a hand up to her forehead and rubbed it around. The morning tiredness was starting to wear off and that stressful headache had started to creep up the side of her temples.
She looked up to the sky and brought up her knees to her chest. "I'll have you know I passed my final exams without a wand." Lizzie smirked and moved her eyes towards the boy next to her, "Maybe I just have some survival instinct." She whispered while lifting her shoulders jokingly and bringing a grin onto her face. "Maybe I didn't get that good of grades but at least it is something."
As the deeper thoughts emerged from darkness, the reality struck Lizzie in the face. She defiantly did not have good grades at all. She really needed to step up her game. If only she actually had some friends that stuck around for a bit that actually encouraged her to study and not loose her wand on a regular occurrence.
"However, I would like to say, it is a good idea to carry a wand around." She let out a small chuckle and shook her head slightly. Lizzie did not like to admit her wrongs that often but she just felt like she could pour out all her secrets out to Syl (not like she had any secrets and way) and he wouldn't even judge her. "I should put a big sign up on the back of my Dorm door saying 'Remember your stick!'"
The mood slowly changed as everything got a bit more quiet. She liked it when they had been smiling and laughing. It was only just a matter of time before the fantasy of a lovely happy world got ripped away from her grasp. Sometimes Lizzie wished that wises were true. Magic was real so why couldn't a genie be real? That was she could make herself feel happy everyday and not have to worry about anything.
Lizzie pursed her lips and rested her kin on her legs, "I hate bad dreams. They make me scared and sad." The girl admitted. She loved to play the tough girl who had everything under control but in reality she was just as weak as the girl who couldn't even sit on a broom. In different ways obviously. "I have them frequently. Normally just a few dark spaces here or there. Sometimes I am alone in a forest. Other times its just so bad I can't even remember it by the time I'm awake." She shuddered quickly.
She did a small double take on looking into Sylvain's eyes. "I.. I don't know really. I have a few issues with friends. Boys.. Mostly a boy." That wasn't even the worst of her problems. "I feel like I push everyone away just as they start getting close to me." She then slid her legs out again and laid back onto the grass. "At the start of First Year, I had a group of friends but now all I have is a stick and some sheets of paper."
Her mouth opened again but nothing came out. She shut it and hummed a bit. Her mother would always sing to her whenever she was sad or felt alone. The song that worked the best was always 'You are my sunshine'. Lizzie brought her hand up to her head again and twisted onto her side.
"Is it me? Am I a bad person?" She asked tearing up slightly before falling back into the wet green grass and continued to hum to herself. It was the only thing keeping her sane.

Listening intently, Sylvain nodded when Lizzie spoke, and grew concerned as she rubbed her temples. He thought he might have some mint in his bag, in case she had a headache, but thought it best to search after she was done speaking. As the charming young Verdine brought her knees up to her chest, Sylvain sat back, resting on the flats of his hands, his elbows locked and supporting his wiry frame. He wondered how she passed her final exams without a wand, but was not surprised in the slightest when she cited survival instinct as the source of her success. Though the confession of bad grades was passed off as not affecting her, Sylvain couldn't help but feel as though perhaps Lizzie wanted to take school more seriously than she claimed.
As Lizzie chuckled, the reason he had begun to like her became more apparent. It wasn't just that she had a hard time admitting when she needed to change her mind, but rather that she was so strong willed her own thoughts changed her mind. That and the fact that she was funny and good looking. The mood changed from willful joking to dreadful hindsight quickly. Sylvain calmly studied Lizzie's body language to pick up if she was telling the truth when she said bad dreams had kept her awake. It wasn't so much so that bad dreams were a stretch of the imagination, but rather that he felt some sense of doubt in the idea that two bad dreams resulted in a moment of connection like this one.
Awkwardly smiling while Lizzie curled onto her side, Sylvain ran his hands through his motley hair. Not knowing quite what to do with himself, he sat back forward in hopes of avoiding the tangling of their limbs to the best of his abilities. Her humming was familiar. "No," he said deliberately as she caught his eyes in the exploding kaleidoscope of the morning sun's arrival, the likes of which turned the sky hundreds of new colors."You are not a bad person." Sylvain understood perfectly the feeling she had. It was the feeling of being loveless. Of being afraid someone might not ever find a way to accept her faults. Sylvain himself had felt this way before so he stayed a little while longer still.
The song she was humming finally struck him, My Only Sunshine. He had some distant memory of the song, as if the fleeting visage of his own mother or at the very least a figure he had come to accept as his real mother, as it was sang it to him. The memory was painful, but still very real and hard to understand. Looking to Lizzie as she lie in the grass, soaking in the morning dew and her own tears, Sylvain felt urge to comfort her but found that his own pained memory kept him from finding the right words. "I think my mom used to sing that to me." Sylvain said, tears in the corners of his eyes betrayed how he felt. He joined in by singing the words mournfully. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...."

Quickly looking up and smiling, Lizzie listened to Sylvain start to sing. "You make me happy when skies are grey." She replied back bobbing her head. He was actually a decent singer which surprised the girl quite a bit. It had never come up in any of the conversations that had had before. "I like your singing." She breathed out a heavy breath and turned towards the sun rise. The song was very fitting for the situation they were both sat in.
"Why did you never mention you sung before?" She inquired while the smile on her face grew wider with each moment. The atmosphere she felt had gone suddenly from tense and solemn to comfortable and beautiful almost in an instant. "Did you want to talk about your bad dream?" Lizzie turned towards the boy sat next to her.
Sighing, Lizzie continued, "I don't want to make everything about me. I want to make sure you are okay as well." The well being of herself and Sylvain where very important. "Being safe inside your head is something we all need to keep up." She nodded her head a bit and closed her eyes. It was very true since all the things that kept happening at Hogwarts. Who knew when some student might accidentally snap and try burn down the castle.

As Lizzie complimented his singing, Sylvain's smile returned. Distracting her from her intrusive thoughts was his mission, and he had succeeded, albeit now he had to answer questions about himself. Admittedly hard for a twelve-year old who barely knew how to acknowledge his own existence at times. Still he would try to be there for her. "You never asked me," he retorted.
As Lizzie's smile grew, so did the lad's desire to see her smile again in the future. "If you want to, and it's not a bother we could talk about my nightmares. Though if I'm being honest, I doubt it'll do much good and make either of us smile." He thought long and hard about what to say, before eventually finding the courage to open up about his late night drowning. The affirmation that she wanted to make sure he was okay too was enough to get him to talk about it.
"I drown a lot," Sylvain said shyly. "Well, in my dreams at least." The lad's face twisted a bit as he tried to remember the details of the dream that continually plagued him. Normally remembering his dreams was difficult. It took writing them down, or recalling them as soon as he awoke, but this dream was etched into his memory. Something his brain would not erase, as it clearly intended to never forget the event.
Nervously swallowing what felt like a lump in his throat, Sylvain spat out the next words. "It starts off with me on a boat, I'm not really sure where I'm going in my dreams, but a storm quickly rolls and and shakes the boat violently." Choking up a bit, Sylvain signals to Lizzie that he'll be just a second as he rummages through his bag for water. Pulling out a small bottle kept for hydration, he takes a sip and continues his violent recall.
"Next thing I know, lightning strikes close to us, and I go sailing off the side of the ship and into the water." Solemn, his features droop as he admits the next part. "I remember crying for my parents, but the sea fills my mouth and lungs before I can even finish the cry for help. Then I wake up." Sylvain shrugged, he had no clue how to interpret the dream. "All I know is that it's just a dream." The smile slowly returned to his face. It felt good to share something that had been bothering him, and he was thankful Lizzie had asked, lest he think he was supposed to keep his nightmares to himself.
"What about you Lizzie? Where'd you learn to sing like that?" Her voice certainly was lovely, but he felt awkward complimenting her given the current conditions. Ah, better to be kind while he had the chance rather than leave her doubting his perspective. "You have a beautiful voice."

"That is correct." She nodded her head slowly. "I would love to hear you sing more often though." A bigger smile crept onto her face as she eyed the sun rise in front of her. There was defiantly a lot about Sylvain she did not know yet and that was a mystery to her.
As the subject turned to his nightmares, Lizzie turned to look at him, "Talking can help sometimes. It just lets it all out." A small silence came between them. It felt quite calm and soothing. There was no rush and there was no need to be anxious about anything. Lizzie left Sylvain to his thoughts and pulled her knees up to her chest as she waited. If it took a long time for him to thing for the right words, she could wait. She was a very patient person.
Sylvain then spoke up. Lizzie listened intently and pulled a small frown when his face twisted. It was obviously something that was either painful for him or uncomfortable. Lizzie did not like to see Sylvain in pain. It was one of the only things she thought that could make her day bad and miserable.
He continued explaining everything while Lizzie nodded her head at all the right parts and maintained her small frown. "Take your time." She whispered out quietly, "You don't need to go into much detail." She added while watching him take a drink from his bag and take a small sip. Sylvain soon spoke again and the story seemed to escalate a lot more than she had hopped
"That sounds awful." She grimaced, "It's just a dream. I'm sure your parents would come rushing for you if they heard your cries. Even if it was just half a cry. It would be a enough to signify their parental instincts." She reassured him quickly and reached out a hand to pat his leg but retracted it before touching him just in case he didn't want to be comforted like that.
His manner changed instantly and they were back onto a previous subject. "My uncle introduced me to singing when I was five. That's also when I earned my love for Rock music of the past." She giggled slightly and the frown turned into a grin once again, "Thank you. I practice a lot."
The sun had risen more than anticipated, Lizzie shot up quickly and looked down to Sylvain, "I need to go. My tent mates will be waking up soon. I don’t want them to be worried about where I am." She waved to him as she ran down the hill hopefully leaving a happier Sylvain Indarys.
Lizzie has left the thread.
