A slight shiver ran down Artemis' spine as the chilling effects of what felt like an egg being cracked over his head ran down his body. He knew then that both he and Hjørdis were disillusioned, but that didn't mean that they were silenced. They still had to rush to the area where Marcus was being held at all the while avoiding the bones, insects, and various other things in that dark tunnel. Just so that the two wouldn't get lost, Artemis grabbed the younger woman's wrist gently, yet firmly, so that they wouldn't be separated by the darkness. Even with that bluebell flame around them, the shadows could possibly come alive and he didn't want the woman next to him to become their next victim.
He knew that he would let go immediately if he were the darkness' next victim. He couldn't afford to let her get hurt if he could help it.
With her warm pulse beating against his fingers, Artemis swiftly and carefully walked down the tunnel. It was a long walk; almost as long as the walk to get to the blasted shimmery wall was in the first hallway. But the longer they walked, the closer they would get to their colleague. And it didn't seem as if they were that far behind him now. A strong, acrid smell would reach Artemis' nose and he would have to restrain himself from coughing the horrible stench out from his mouth. He still couldn't see much in front of him, even with the flame, but he knew something foul had to be up ahead.
And then he heard her...or it. "At least your friends will have a pretty face to stare at as they die by your hands."
It was a horrible sentence to hear and if Artemis were looking at his face in a mirror he was sure that he would see a paleness to his skin as the thought and image of Marcus being dead before them entered his mind. Moving faster to the end of the tunnel, Artemis saw a horrible scene before him and looked up to see Marcus in the air held by vines while that bloody hag was beneath him goading; a boiling pot of putrid something was boiling next to the duo while a pile of clothes...children's clothes from the look of it, were lying prone in a corner nearby.
The old wench would scream something about being "too soon" but whatever it was, Artemis didn't know nor did he care to find out. He just wanted to get the man down and he hoped that what he wanted to cast would work. As his partner sent a "Deprimo" down toward the hag's feet, Artemis raised his own wand and pointed it at the vine roots where the connecting vines holding onto Marcus were attached. "Reducto!" He wasn't going to take a chance that a Diffindo would cut through those vines in one cast. They needed those vines gone, now!"

Her almond-shaped brown eyes were focused in the darkness for whatever was moving about. There was something in the shadows, but Maya was unsure of where. Her job was to protect Elaine as the Gryffindor Head was to conduct a powerful spell of her own. Mind cleared and alert, Maya could not see anyone about anymore. Did the creature leave?
It wasn't until the ground began to shake. At first it was small, but it rapidly increased in strength. Maya looked down to find that the ground where she stood was crumbling. Little by little, the ground began to flake. Maya froze for a split second. But that was all it took. A little too late, as Maya was trying for the edge, the ground was disintegrating below her. She knew that she had just one chance. Maya dropped her torch and with her wand still in her hand, grabbed the wall of the earth. She tried not to look down, but couldn't help but to glance. Her torch was a small dot of light disappearing by the millisecond. How deep was the hole below her?
Maya's heart was beating fast. Her fingers were holding on to dear life. While she had the skill of wandless magic and non-verbal magic, she was unable to keep focus. She now had to rely on her muggle half. Her strength and stamina was all she had for her at the moment. Maya tried to pull herself up, but she was unable to. She needed something to help her and her colleagues were going to be of no help-- most of them were dealing with something of their own.
If she was unable to go up, Maya figured going down slowly would be her best move. Maya moved her head to grab the wand with her teeth. She took a deep breath in to calm her nerves and cast a basic lumos spell for her wand to light up to see what was around her. She began to slowly climb down the wall. She had no idea how long it would take her, but it was better to climb down than to fall.
Action: Cast Lumos to see around her and is slowly climbing down the hole.

Still floating on his moontrimmer, River wasn't in any real danger when the hole grew beneath the group. Instinct got the best of him, however, and instead of trying to save the professor of muggle studies from what was a potentially lethal fall, he just swooped to the side and to solid ground. Not his proudest moment to be sure, but also not his most embarrassing. That honor would have to go to his 5th year at Hogwarts when while playing on the Ravenclaw team he caught the snitch. Triumphant, River had landed, holding the snitch up high for all to see. Unfortunately, it quickly donned on the boy that no one else was cheering. Why? He had forgotten that he was a chaser. Later on, it became apparent that a particularly proud player in his opponent's team had cast the confundus charm on him before the game began. It wasn't his fault then, but the memory still haunted the man.
Character developing tangents aside, there was work to do. River looked down into the gaping wound in the ground to see if anyone needed help. Indeed two people did- though one of them had seemingly decided to climb farther down instead of up. As confusing of action as that was, it definitely made the decision of who to help a lot easier. "Rosalind!" River called out as he flew towards the older woman.

A disappointed smirk grew on Ivars face as he watched the cat dodge his spell. The residue magic hitting the wall and poofing into air instead. The cat certainly seemed more intelligent than your average cat. The Care of Magical Creatures professor was right about to follow the cat when he felt a shift in the environment. He had felt it before, crawling into animal dens, the atmosphere right before something was about to pounce. As Ivar took a step forward, the bones lining the hallways snapped into place, creating the shapes of skeletal arms reaching for him.
Ivar started retreating, walking backwards swiftly as the white bones reached for him. Was this the cats doing? Ivar made a clicking noise with his tongue, they would have to catch that cat later. "You. You don't belong here... Get. OUT!" Ivar turned his head to look at the commotion he was retreating to. Another one! Another damn professor was attacking their companions. Hell! What was this!? Some sort of joke? Just some sycophants that loved betraying their team and so they lured their coworkers down into a dark dungeon just to stab them in the back?
“Helvete(Hell)...” Ivars eyes darted from the group he had been retreating to on one side, and the hands reaching out to him on the other. Darn it, darn it all Ivar thought as he made a run for the group of colleagues. The group seemed rather preoccupied as the HoH was pinning one man up by his throat, and the short one seemed to be stuck in some hole, shouting for ladies. People thought of the most unnecessary things when stressed Ivar thought.
Shortening the last distance between him and his coworkers in strides, Ivar caught up with them. Ivar was tired of all this betrayal, tired of sub par teammates and bumbling heroes that turn around and betray you in the next instance.
Ivar flipped the axe in his hand around so that he could hit with the blunt back of the axehead instead of the blade, lining up for a strike. Ivar was gonna relieve some of his pent up aggression, and knock out the idiot at the same time, one swift bap in the back of the head, hopefully he could knock some sense into the fool. A sinister grin grew on the Norsemans face as he moved the axe in one swift swooping motion. Aiming the blunt side of the axe towards the back of Caradocs head.

"AVADA KEDAVRA!", these would be the very last words Jean-Papi would hear on this earth. The voice of a shrieking old crone with wards covering most of her body. Not the voice of his beloved Claire. He wouldn't be able to cares her face one last time or let his fingers run through her pitch black hair. None of that would be gifted to JP. He wouldn't even die knowing the fate of his children. Maybe in death he would meet them in another world. In an entire other plane perhaps. Either way it would not be today.
A flash of green came towards him in slow motion. The nurse closed his eyes as he kept charging embracing the enivitable with grace and courage. One thought lingering on his mind and on his lips as he whispered: Claire.... As he opened his eyes ready to awaken in another existence he was shocked to find himself in the same place. This time, however, something was different. Claire stood in front of him. She smiled at him. Mon amour.*.
What? How? How can it be that you are..., before JP could finish his sentence a finger was pressed on his lips. Hush now, beloved. We don't have much time. You must live. Your task hasn't finished yet.
What task, Claire? What are you talking about? I'm so tired. I-... I miss you so much. My heart aches to hear your laugh again. One last time. I can't go on without you. Not again.
You can, Jean. You must, if not for yourself do it for me and your children. Now listen to me. Jump and stretch. Remember! J'aime toi!, with that she pressed a kiss on his lips.
Wh-..., and just like that the world started moving again and Claire was gone. The bright, green flash hurled at him with incredible speed and JP missed death by just a hair as he jumped to the side and stretched both arms and his entire upper body to his full extend. As the Frenchman looked at the foul creature in front of him he noticed sheer and utter panic. It was hanging so thick in the air he could almost taste it. A cruel smile played on JP's thin lips.
That's right you monstrosity. Call for help, but let me tell you this. It will for naught. I'm going to enjoy this. I'll make you pay for what you've done! For what you've done to my wife, to my children!
Incarcerous!, JP thought to himself as he pointed the wand at the hag and made the all too familiar wand movements in the hopes of binding her. No matter if the hag would dodge or if the spell didn't work Jean-Papi would resume his charge at her with his bladed umbrella. Ready to rid Hogwarts of this wretched plague.
*Mon amour. = My beloved.

Zahid took a moment to take in the runes he was looking at, before he turned to Caradoc to pass on what information he could gather from them, only to stop and curse silently as he noticed Caradoc's eyes changing colour. He would try to move out of Caradoc's immediate range but he was too slow. Before he could even move a muscle, Caradoc already had him by the throat.
A voice in the back of his mind asked what it was with all the attacking each other and doing the hags' work for them.
For a split moment Zahid contemplated attempting something he had once seen demonstrated at an extra-credit self-defence seminar at the university that he'd chaperoned – using body or muscle tension to stop another from strangling you... but that required training he most certainly did not have so the thought was discarded as quick as it appeared. Similarly, though, there would be little point in struggling physically – he had no illusions when it came to his strength. He was no fighter.
Seeing someone (or something?) approach behind the Head of House, he hoped it was an ally – Eide was still supposed to be here, right? – and instead ignored the physicality of his predicament to concentrate on casting a wandless non-verbal Petrificus Totalus at his friend. He could not speak properly with the hands on his throat, so he did not even try (yet) and in the adrenaline filled moment he had quite forgotten that he was still holding his wand in his hand. At least he was too shocked to panic immediately. Still, the shock in his eyes slowly, unwittingly, turned into a look of betrayal.

Well, he had successfully avoided being pushed into the cauldron, and tripped the hag to the ground. It seemed to be pure luck that he narrowly avoided another spell aimed at his face, and his heart was drumming in his chest as he lunged at the creature. His wand was gripped like a knife in his hand and was very much about to be used to stab the thing.
Before Marcus could take that upper hand, though, he was yanked from behind and into the air. His eyes widened in shock, surprised that he did not know there was another enemy in the room. But a moment later he realized it was roots that had attacked, not something he could have sensed. They had wrapped around his chest and pulled him into the air so quickly. This was an unfortunate development. Hewas now suspended in the air, wand still clutched in hand but useless to a man without a mouth. He had no footing to attack from, and no way to get himself free.
Marcus looked down at the hag as it spoke. Its voice grated on his nerves, and its yellow eyes were awful. He glared as it spoke of him being outmatched. The creature was right, of course, that alone he was outmatched. He had come down here in search of the hags in a group of accomplished witches and wizards. He had not expected to get separated from them so suddenly. His heart was pounding unceremoniously, knowing that if he did not get help soon, there was a very real chance he would die or be boiled alive or something equally as awful. The hag gestured towards the way that they had come from, and said that his friends would arrive soon. Seems like the hag was using him as bait at this point, which only settled him enough to think that help was on the way. He could only hope that enough of them were coming to outmatch the thing.
Only a few moments later, he noticed a shift in its attention. It looked down at its hand and spoke into it, almost like there was a person in her hand. He wished he could get a better vantage point and see what she was holding. He struggled against his restraints as best he could, but the way they were wrapped around his shoulders left him very little room to use his hands.
"It took risk to corner him, I'm sure. But I can feel his tainted blood walking the halls up above. The same blood that is now boiling through your veins! At least your friends will have a pretty face to stare at as they die by your hands."
Marcus did not have time to process the words she was saying and deduce who she was talking about. The moment she began to swirl her hands and cast some sort of spell, he felt like his head was being split in two. Boiled alive. It would have been so easy to just relent to the pain, but- well, he had gone through plenty of physical pain before. Every month for the last two decades. So he instinctively fought against pain of any kind, and doing that now led him to realize it was the hag. It was trying to access something, and he would not let it. If he had a mouth, he would be screaming bloody murder, but he was glad that he did not. He did not want to give the creature any sense of satisfaction. He fought against the intrusion into his mind, feeling sweat bead down his forehead at the effort and not able to think of much from the pain.
"RAAAAH! Too soon! Too damn soon!"
The pain stopped. Marcus' breathing through his nose eased a bit in response, and the sense of relief was overwhelming. He felt a little bit exhausted by the mental battle, but it was done and he needed to think of next steps. The cauldron below had overflowed with steam in response to the hag's anger, and he looked around the rest of the room. Marcus continued to struggle against the vines holding him, knowing that the hag had sensed people coming. He needed to be on the ground by the time they arrived, or they'd be at even more of a disadvantage.

Elena dropped the spell with a violent curse in Romanian just a moment before the earth started to open.
She'd known she would be distracted, had known that she lacked both the experience and the natural talent that one would normally need to conjure Eternal Flames. Even without distractions it was a complicated spell, and there would have always been a chance that she wouldn't be able to call forth the flames... but under the current circumstances trying wasn't good enough. Failure was unacceptable. Still, she had failed.
Her carefully erected calm slipped from her mind in an instant, collapsing into itself like a house of cards under the smallest gust of mind. A spark that didn't catch, a flame that wouldn't come, and suddenly her concentration and detachment was gone again in a fit of frustration laced with rage.
Then, the earth rumbled and before Elena could figure out what was happening, Maya Galim had been swallowed by the hole Rosalind had vanished into earlier, the thing now big enough to split the corridor into three sections.
Her, the Astronomy Professor, the nurse and the hag where on one side, Jemari on his broom on the other and Aleksander stranded on the path that would lead back upstairs. They had been separated from each other effectively, the group split up even more than they already had been. Mr. Dupont was in direct conflict which a hag – or at least what looked like a hag, given that Elena had never heard of a hag able to cast curses as advanced as the Avada Kedavra – shooting spells while Maya's torch had dropped into the newly-created pit, leaving them again defenseless.
Professor Jemari had the presence of mind to make a dash for the Professor of Divination, which left three of them standing around the pitch. With no light to protect them from the darkness.
Again, Elaine was faced with a choice.
“Aleksander,” she yelled over the pit, her voice raised and urgent in a way that was unlike her person. "Help, Jemari! Get them out of that hole and stand clear!" She had known the man since he'd been a student on his first day at Durmstrang. She trusted him.
They'd wasted time. She had wasted time in trying to do the right thing, the logical thing, to rule her rage, to fight it, to think things through because that was who she was. Not a woman to storm into a duel without thought, ruled by her emotions. That had been Alexandru. It had cost him his life.
Her laugh was short and unhinged. The half-eagle screeched in her ears.
We kill it. That had been her words. Time to act on them.
It seemed that her battles robes would come in handy after all, Elaine mused, when ran to meet up with Jean-Papi, eyes on the figure at the end of the corridor. He threw a spell, trying to bind the hag. So innocent despite his rage, his pain.
Elena didn't hesitate. The hag had shrunk back from her Bluebell Flames earlier. She was not out to take prisoners.
"Protego Diabolica," she chanted, brandishing her cherry wand at the hag. An arc of blue fire across the dungeon floor that aimed right at the hag at the far end of the corridor.

--The Lair--
The pair of professors would quickly appear invisible to each other. As they ventured forth to the source of a screaming voice, @Artemis Vernatis would try to locate @Hjørdis Jensen's hand. While it took him a few tries, eventually his fumbling fingers found her arm and were able to lock themselves on her wrist. Hand in hand, the pair would find the end of the tunnel, finally see a green glow flickering against the cavern walls. A fire bursting under a boiling cauldron with viridian liquid. The hag's back facing them as the being addressed @Marcus Iwasaki. The caretaker could clearly be seen hanging from the ceiling. Ever-tightening roots swirling around his chest and arms, his legs dangling in the air as he struggled against them. Nora and Artemis would have to come up with a plan, and they would need to do it fast.
Whether it was Nora's arm being held by Artemis or her foot losing balance as soon as it crunched some mushrooms underneath, her spell would miss. Hitting the ground behind the hag, rather than underneath her. Etta's attention was quickly drawn to the growing hole behind her and her gaze snapped towards the cave's entrance. Blue flames flickered as she noticed another spell flying in her general direction. Marcus managed to free himself from the root's grasp, breaking the summoned rope. As the caretaker landed on the floor, he noticed the root rapidly growing back and coming back after him. Though a spell impacted instantly, leaving the vine to shatter to ashes. Marcus was able to turn his full attention back to the hag, who was quickly catching on to what was happening. They both locked eyes as Etta realised the danger she was in.
Yet her foul grin returned to her face. "I hope you have a good night, darling." Her long and wrinkled hand rose up to the sky as she snapped her fingers. A hard blowing wind rose up within the room. In the blink of an eye all light was snuffed out inside the cavern. The fire underneath the cauldron had gone out and the bluebell flames had simply vanished. Marcus likely knew what would be coming. Not even a second later, the familiar skittering would come. The sound of a thousand, no- a million, tiny wriggling and biting creatures made of pure darkness descended upon the three professors. The entrance of the cavern received the brunt of it. While Nora managed to duck away from the first strike, the next one quickly followed after and slashed her along the shoulder. The next hit would come down hard. As the darkness struck at her, Nora would feel something sharp slice across her face. Kicking her back, she would stumble backwards and finally be gutted as sharp claws pierced through her abdomen. The Charms professor wouldn't fair any better. In a series of attacks, he would feel the shadows almost slicing through him. Left, right, left, right and a final slash met his hand. His body could feel warm blood pouring out of the cuts on his arms and legs.
Marcus would sense the attack coming. Quickly ducking out of the way the caretaker was still a hunter ready for a fight. Two strikes hit him alongside both shoulders before he managed to evade another. A final cut stung towards the back of his right hip. They were going to have to act soon if they wished to escape this predicament. The hag would have been near as well, or likely made her escape by now if there was another way out of this place.
--The Entrance--
It was almost cruel to have the smallest man on the team be stuck in a hole and the edge of the pit so far out of his reach. Luckily the desperation of finding his lost weapon, gave the goblin a plan of escape. Like a rocket, @Gargott Dunaid would shoot out of the hole in the ground and land face-first into the wall. Ouch... that nose would certainly need some fixing after tonight. At the very least he would find that his beloved Bernice would be waiting for him just few feet away from the hole he had just exited. There would have been little time for rest though. @Ivar Eide would pass him by with an axe in hand and purpose in his gaze. The Norseman had just about enough of professors being turned against their own. He would swiftly put an end to this insanity. Whilst Caradoc and @Zahid al-Benghazi ibn Masoud were both struggling against one another. The historian figured he needed to out think his opponent quickly if he preferred to have a stable neck after this event. This display was only proving once again, that neither of them had been born fighters. While the historian shot his friend a look of betrayal, his spell hit him effectively. His little trickery would cost his Head of House dearly. The Head of Hufflepuff would freeze up at the exact moment Ivar would raise the back of his axe and slam Caradoc on the back of his head.
The cursed man would tumble down to the floor and fall flat on his back. His eyes rolled back and his arms still stuck in the same grappling position. He was knocked out of the fight. The skeletons however, were not. Each one of them would bring up their slow moving arms and try to catch any individual they caught their eyes on. One grabbed Zahid by the sleeve and tried to pull him down the hallway but miserably failed to hold on. Another lunged at Ivar's back but jumped straight past him as he cleverly tripped his enemy. A third skeleton had actually not noticed the hole in the floor and simply tumbled in. The last skeleton would try to take an easy shot at the goblin lying on the floor. With another body's bone in hand, the undead rival would slam and kick his opponent with little resistance. An aching back to sleep with later down the evening, luckily the dead weren't showing much promise.
--The Corridors--
@Maya Galim would look down into the pit and quickly come to realise that there was nothing to be found in the dark soil underneath these forgotten corners of the castle. Slowly climbing back up, she would see @Aleksander Ostrowski looking down at her. His hand reached out for her to grab it. Together they would get her out of there. If she only climbed just that... little... bit... further. And there it was. Their hands locked in place, and she found herself reaching the top next to the potions professor. On the other side of the pit, @River Jemari could be seen flying down into the black hole and locating @Rosalind Kibitzer. With their joint effort, they managed to bring her on the back of his broom safely. No one was going to be left alone in a ditch today.
Down the left hall, a fight would ensue. @Jean-Papi Dupont and the hag faced off against each other. Both their spells missing their target as they kept ducking away. Hattie was putting up more of a fight than her appearance would give her. But she was growing scared. And the fear was driving her to madness. "I'LL CUT YOU. I'LL BOIL YOU." She kept screaming, her eyes bulging as her hand slammed forward. Again and again and again, she kept slashing and growling. Where was the help Etta promised her would come? How long was she meant to wait? With each passing second, she was losing the last drops of her courage. The nurse would fall to his knees eventually, the embrace of a lover coming to comfort him in his final moments. His longing was like a lighthouse, waiting for the moon to drift closer. But the dawn was here. As soon as Hattie saw her chance, she would lunge forward. Teeth bare and claws unsheathed, the old crone landed right on top of Jean-Papi. "I'LL SMASH YOU. BREAK YOU." And then a wave of blue and blazing fire would fill the hallway. A sea of flames engulfing them both and blackening the surrounding stones. Shadows were playing tricks in the light. But while Jean would find himself wondering why he remained unharmed, he would see Hattie scream in agony as she was slowly being pulverised. Until finally, all there was left to find, was a pile of ashes.
If the Frenchman were to look behind him, he would find @Elaine Pendrast with a wand aimed at his position. There was darkness in the spell she had cast, as dark as the intent behind it. Though nonetheless to save a life. It seemed there would be at least one hag less residing in the castle after tonight. But the hunt was still on.

Banishment

Hjørdis pulled her wrist out of the other's hand, it was too late. They had been spotted and their attack had missed. It was far too late. The skittering sounds. She recognised it all too well. It happened before she could even think of casting a spell to stop it. Everything happened too quickly. She pulled herself away from Artemis, ducking away from the incoming invasion. But the next caught her shoulder, then again. "Arg-" She managed out as she felt the pain on the left side of her face. Her non-dominant hand clutched her face, hissing silently at the sting of it. It was wet.
Getting knocked backwards, she stumbled trying to regain any sort of composure but another attack hit her. She coughed from the impact of it. Moving to clutch her abdomen, she noticed the same. It was far too dark to see the state of her wounds but she knew what they meant. She knew what was happening. Not that she wanted to think about it but she knew what it was. Damnit. She groaned, clutching her largest wound. She knew this was risky coming in, especially without the group. But Marcus was alive. She had seen him. At the very least, they weren't too late. They just needed to buy more time, outlast the darkness and the lair's attacks, and-
It was not the hag that was coming for her. The hag wa- The hag was not attackin- It dawned on her in an instant.
Could she attack the creature? She had no idea where either of the other two were in the room. They could have been anywhere... It was far too dark to tell. "LUMOS SOLEM!" She cast loudly, trying to break through the dark with a ridiculous amount of sunlight. Gripping her wand, she pointed it directly towards the last location she had seen the hag - or rough direction at least.
She was making it very clear where she was and that she was the source of any light that came out of the wand. She might have still been camouflaged - she had no idea - but the lumos would not be. There was a reason that they had not used lumos before. It gave away their position.
And using it now had another reason. It was very much intentional. She had to stop the lair itself from attacking them. And in the darkness, the lair had full advantage. She needed enough light to stop the darkness from attacking any of them. But more than that, she also wanted to make sure that they could see. The needed eyes on the hag if they were going to end this. And if she had to be bait for that to happen, she was taking it.
"Stop her," She called out towards the other two. Perhaps the creature had attacked Marcus or Artemis but Hjørdis had not heard a single spell or noise from her. The silence was concerning. It was the lair itself that was coming for them, not the hag - why? They needed to get the hag - and they needed to make sure their attacks did not hit each other. For that, they needed light. Well... at least some of them did. Not everyone had an exceptional nose like Marcus.
