How To Be Proper
Charles complimented her accent and Iris couldn’t help but smile. She didn’t often get to play around with accents. Especially when people complained about them so much. Several times she had been told that her Norwegian accent was harsh and difficult to understand, however it had a cadence that English lacked. Iris had grown up in a large family and her uncles—all four to be exact—spoke a large variety of languages, they would transition in sentences alone from Spanish to English to Norwegian to Russian to Romanian without skipping a beat. Iris could only speak Norwegian and English, but she was getting to be alright following along in a few other languages as well.
Charles corrected her assumption of the last name being ‘Bucket’. She should have known better, but Bucket was more fun to think in her head. He said it was likely to be very posh. How wonderful. Posh was the last thing she needed. It was abrasive and very stuckupish. At least it would give her time to get her accent even better. Thankfully, Charles said there wasn’t likely to be dancing. Iris avoided the bullet for now.
Iris noted that Charles got a bit more professional, the ‘mask’ as he called it, starting to slip on. Iris made no comment, although she was able to guess at his Russian mutterings. He clearly didn’t like Katherine. Another thing that Iris was likely to have to pay attention to.
Charles offered another exchange, “But if I teach you Norwegian, I won’t be able to make fun of you in front of your face,” Iris smiled deceptively as she said this, her tone indicating that she was agreeing to his offer, not mocking him, “In other words, sure,” She winked and turned back to Katherine.
“So, what should I even expect at the party? And what will I have to do besides were a,” Iris caught herself before she could say ‘stuffy dress’. Instead, she used the word that she was pretty sure was ‘awful’, in Russian, or maybe it was French “a Ужасно, dress” They way she said this was almost as if she were saying ‘pretty dress’. Honestly, she didn’t want to offend Katherine, but also, languages are really, really fun.
Iris started taking some mental notes as Katherine talked. Don't talk to boys. Try to impress the adults. And the dancing was a bit more important than Charles had said. However, the 'not talking to boys' was a bit odd since Charles had been so nice to her today. Maybe she could find him and Katherine at the gala and avoid other people altogether.
"Sure, you can teach me to dance. But, I don't know that first thing," Iris trailed off now, giving Katherine a little bit more respect than before. Her appearance honesty was enough to keep her from switching languages again. After all, she was supposed to be learning how to be polite and proper.

Charles lightly rolled his eyes at Katherine's words, sure they were one of the worse posh parties but it wasn't the only one, a bit bored however Charles jumped onto the rock near them and started to balance on one foot. Charles heard the girl speak to him, referring that he hated those types of parties to so he joked " was it that obvious?" Charles laughed a bit but with Katherine's next wording, Charles now jumped in as he spoke " actually you shouldn't approach anyone, just stay to yourself and stay quiet on the side and no one will talk to you. Unless your family introduces you to someone else, in that case just stay quiet and be polite it and it should be over soon."
Charles rolled his eyes at Katherine's story again, really is she trying to say he was like them or that was he was saying was wrong, Charles again chuckled at the mention of dancing before saying " dancing won't be important at the Beckett party but if dancing does come up them," Charles jumped down from the stone and approached Iris before speaking " do you mind? Uh I just hold your waist and you hold my shoulders then we just sway to the music," Charles moved his hands to her waist and swayed his body a but before removing his hands and saying " there I think you got it Iris."
Charles recognized Norwegian and understood it a bit so when she spoke, he laughed a bit " I can still understand Norwegian just not speak it plus if I knew the language then we both could say hidden thoughts about others together, leave then on the edge almost," Charles smiled when she accepted his offer before hearing her next question and Russian as he spoke " you know Russian? I perfer the language to English so maybe I should speak in that instead," switching back to english however " basically just enter in with your family, probably behind them and with a good standing then either stay behind them silently or if your lucky then wander to a corner wall and stay out of the way where no one will approach or speak to you unless your family does in that case then make eye contact with someone you don't mind talking to and they will come over and "save you". They will make up a excuse and bring you away where you talk with them for a few minutes then part ways, simple really."

As katherine said her first sentence she could see charles roll his eyes damn was she that annoying or something,he started to get on katherines nerves ,she felt hated and judged and god she doesn't need to be judged not now or never not after what happened in the ball. After a while she saw charles roll his eyes again and interrupt her then started to control things and then here goes more eye rolling,He might as well continue rolling it till he finds a brain in there.
Katherine questioned herself why does she help people when all she got was this disrespect and they weren't trying to hide it atleast iris was decent but him wasn't even hiding it, she watched as he started to help iris into dancing she started to feel like the poles on the street at night and god everything that blabbered out his mouth was depressing standing behind them you're a human not a bloody slave iris has also asked her what she had to do other than were and awful dress which she said in russian,Katherine new a little russian she knows many languages but she doesn't speak them why does she have to hide her opinions to katherine god it was all frustrating to katherine and katherine was already tired to pull up fights its enough the small scar on her right fist shows right on her knuckles which reminded her of that epic though sad ball that happened.
Finally katherine broke and said" all you have to do other than wear an awful and uncomfortable dress is probably show how soft you are your not too rough in my opinion i'm in the edge were i don't care but expect your parents or whoever your going with to introduce you to other families and all you have to do is be polite and soft and speak when your spoken too other than that your good", she paused with a straight face and said" The ball isn't as hard as you think don't stress it out you'll do just fine you know the traditional dance and you can come to me anytime if you want to ill be available for you,as I said be polite compliment them everyone loves compliments other than that when they don't introduce you, you can go to your friends or up to me and charles I guess",
After a while charles spoke with even more depressing stuff katherine just couldn't hold it in anymore and said"god,The ball is already depressing enough don't depress it even more you stand either in between your parents or behind them which way, you're not a *bloody* slave and when they introduce you, and when you're spoken to you can speak then you can go to your friends unless you do enjoy standing in the corner go ahead I don't mind whatever suits you but honestly that's depressing your not the only pure blooded wizard here by the way,Its not a rule what you just said maybe to you but that's not on iris,you want to know whats not polite is you rolling your eyes everytime I speak if you don't want me here bloody say so", she paused and continued with a straight face and sharpened her icy eyes saying" I tell you what i'm actually going ,you're rude and arrogant and im not up for it i've already had enough on my plate i've tried to be nice and apologise but its your choice", she said with a disappointed but normal tone while looking at him.
Then she looked to iris " Do as you please you have russian prince charming here to help you,I gave you some of my advice but you don't have to listen to me, I'm here for you when you need company in the ball other than that i'm heading out going to people who actually respect me",she looked at charles straight in his eyes while saying her last sentence she turned around and started walking heading to her friend but while she turned away from them and started walking a bit she said in parselmouth since that's the only language none of them knew "god the things I do to try to help people", she continued walking knowing were she was headed.

Iris knew to shut her mouth when Charles and Katherine started going back and forth. She sort of just stood there attempting to not lean to either side. Her list of mental notes was getting increasingly longer and the fact that the two of them were disagreeing on things made it a bit hard to write up the list of things to do and not to do. Although, it was probably a bit beneficial that she was getting two different perspectives on the party stuff.
When Charles used her as a dancing example, Iris did so with uncharacteristic grace for once in her life. It did actually seem quite a bit easier than she had thought. Iris added Katherine's offer for more dancing to the growing list of things. Katherine turned to storm off and Iris bit her tongue. It wasn't really worth stopping her because Iris knew when she, herself, was mad, there was no calming her down.
As Katherine was leaving, she made some comment in a language Iris hadn't even heard before. It was a sound like hissing and garbled speech that was a little bit more than frightening. "What language was that?" Iris whispered when she knew Katherine was out of earshot.
"Oh and I only know very little Russian," Iris added, more as an afterthought that anything. "And, exchange accepted. Norwegian isn't too hard to learn after all,"
"So, is there anything I'm missing? Probably no dancing, but if we do, do that just sort of go with it. If you want to, avoiding conversation is easy. Try to be nice? What about like food and eating and tablemanners?" Iris felt a bit off just letting Katherine leave, but it wasn't like she had been mean per say.

Charles felt like himself and he could tell that Katherine was a nice person but he felt has if she gave off the same vibe as bus family did when it came to pureblood stuff and ball's. They agreed on a few things as Katherine gave her advice but at other times they didn't, Charles felt like they must have grew up in different pureblood families from the sound of it. His was your typical tradition strict pureblood family that he would do anything not to be related to while hers must have been actually like a family or something.
Charles then caught her next piece and Charles really wasn't in the mood for fights, he was actually a pretty chill dude when he didn't wear his mask like right now but Katherine was slowly getting under his skin. Couldn't she see that they had different experiences and grew up differently and went to different parties or balls. Charles then jumped in " clearly we grew up differently and had different families while attending different balls. Since when your a six year old child those things can be depressing and I'm sorry if I roll my eyes once in a while at least I'm not biased against others because of their genders or make assumptions of them."
Charles had a lot on his chest, he could have gone on for hours on his life and family experiences but he didn't as he heard Katherine speak again before he spoke " assumptions again, why don't you try having a open mind for once. But no you stay Katherine, I'll just leave and go back to being ignored by others. My family does it all the time so not a big deal but please stay since your the only one here who knows anything about being proper," a hint of sarcasm in his voice as the end as he turned to Iris and spoke " I'm sorry Iris for the way I acted and situation that went down."
Catching Katherine's last but and Iris's question, Charles wasn't sure as he struggled with thinking he finally spoke " parseltongue maybe? Since it consists of hissing," Charles was ready to bid hid farewell to Iris so she and Katherine can discuss the ball or whatever but Iris seemed to answer his language question allowing Charles to smile before saying " sounds like we have a reason to see each other again now," Charles listened to her next few words before saying himself " I'm sure Katherine will help you and say the opposite of me but if there's dancing then that thing we did will do, then if you approach someone to talk to then chose wisely or approach a friend like Katherine or uh me. If you chose a stranger then don't chose on that looks like someone who brags or anything but yeah bascaily bite your tongue and play nice. Eating and table manners? That's harder to explain but the summary is eat with your mouth close, small bites or don't fill up your cheeks and keep a good posture at the table. Just remember your representing your family so keep your control."
Charles then jumped onto the rock again and took a breath before turning back to Iris and saying " want me to leave so you and Katherine can chat? I can leave if you want?"

As katherine heard his last words families what did he really think hers were a typical family try having dark heritage since the beginning of her blood line and a family who wants to turn her into a dark witch to make them proud and slowly rip every shred of humanity she has, Katherine was fuming really. katherine tried walking a few steps away she couldn't handle it but to speak the truth to him was she afraid of the consequences , but she was angry she needed a break as she spoke those parselmouth words she turned and spoke madly"OK IM DONE ,TRY HAVING A DARK HERITAGE SINCE YOUR BLOODLINE STARTED AND PARENTS AND FAMILY WHO ARE ALSO DARK WITCHES AND WIZARDS TRY TO TURN YOU INTO A DARK WITCH LIKE THEM UNWILLINGLY AND RIP EVERY SHRED OF HUMANITY IN YOU HUH, exactly didn't think so you don't know what i go through so don't make assumptions either i cant rebel like you even though i would love to I have like a Knife on my neck if i move, im good as dead to them i'm going to get blasted of the family tree, so its a million times stricter and harder that your typical strict pureblood family", she paused angrily and took a deep breathe and spoke.
"Try not showing any emotions of sadness or anything to people you cant cry out you cant be happy you just have to look like a inhuman robot whose incredibly powerful and evil in every way try having a family that wizards fear, I can barely have friends since they are scared of my father and his evil brutal ways,And god they're all manipulative vipers that control and manipulate you till you go insane and here comes the purity crap i cant have any muggle born friends ,It breaks my heart don't you think so dont judge me either", she sighed and look to the ground and back at them .
"all i wanted was to help someone not start this crap, that's why charles is the better man better person you don't want to be around me, and i think i told you why have fun together", she looked at them but couldn't help feel sad and broken she never told anyone about her family they'd all be scared and terrified , why would they want to be friends with a upcoming evil dark witch, no one understands the feeling of who or what kath would want to be, she just wants to be normal not afraid of her family and what they would do to her she had warm eyes while looking at them like teary blue eyes she looked at them then back down and turned to finally walk away.Expecting no one to call after her.
She played with her family ring as she walked, Having no clue were she was gonna go.

Watching Katherine walk back to them just to explode and yell about her problems made him feel bad for her but also made his blood boil. He didn't understand where people got their assumptions about him from, just because he tried so hard to rebel or appear arrogant around others didn't mean his homelife was amazing actually it was the opposite and he really didn't feel like talking about it or even thinking for that matter, which was why he stayed as far from that topic as possible but when Katherine just screamed her own problems in his face, he couldn't sit back and do nothing.
Charles waited for her to finished before saying calmly " I'm sorry, I really have Katherine. But here's something you probably never here, I understand. I live with a family involved in the dark arts that done terrible things for years and just because I act freely here doesn't mean I do at my house, if I acted this way at my home then I would be punished extremely. Punishment that I'm sure you never been through, tell me have you found a hobby that you loved and were good at but your family turned it's back on you so you found a tutor in a muggleborn that you saw in the middle of the night because you were too afraid of your family to tell them then when they do find out about him, they snap your broom, punish you, and discard the muggleborn. Your nine years old and blaming yourself for his death,"
Instead of yelling he got emotion as a tear and as he spoke more his original British accent was breaking through the Russian mix, " try having no friends because your family forbids you from leaving the house and the only thing to do is have classes with tutors who jinx you when you fail. Try be told everyday since you could walk that you were a disappointment, a mistake, that your going to be disowned by your own family. Try be manipulated each day with beliefs that you know are wrong and ideals that you don't want but can't say anything against since your afraid for your life. Try be ignored and forgotten by your family, that holidays they lock you up in your room," he felt the hot tears run down his face and his throat tighten as he continue this time in his natural British voice, " have you ever been told after your first year at school that your nothing, that you shouldn't be a part of your family than being ignored and dropped off at a relative's house in france where that relative was a former death eater. Try having no friends at school because their afraid of your older brother who bullies you because your family loves him and praises him no matter what, try being punished for his wrong or speaking up. Try having to flirt with others or insult them just so they could look at you or pay attention to you."
Charles was seriously crying now as he finished " listen I'm sorry about your life, I really am and I hope that it gets better. Because mine won't, if am not obedient or like a slave as you said then I'm punished or worse," He then turned and was about to walk away when be spoke to both of them " I'm sorry about the scene I caused and you two can stay and chit chat while talk behind my back I don't care, I'll just leave now."

Iris had thought that Katherine was storming away and wasn't planning on coming back. Well, she thought wrong. Katherine did come back, and this time with a fury that Iris was too naive to understand. Iris had never dealt with family as strict and cut-throat as Katherine was describing. So, as usual, she shut down, not trying to be empathetic or help ease the tension. It would work itself out, it always did. The yelling brought back memories that Iris didn't care to relive, so she blocked out Katherine's words, blocking the memories out with them.
Then it was Charles' turn to get frustrated. Instead of accusations, there were tears. Iris stood in a level of bewilderment as he started crying, his accent slipping into a more raw one. What in Merlin's name was going on here? Iris inwardly cringed as her inner voice used a British euphemism. But honestly, what was wrong with them?
Was the Pureblood status so completely convoluted that it scarred these kids so young? That even bringing up something like a dinner party brought out tears and screams? There was a part of Iris that was frightened of what it had done to these two. And she had wanted it? She had wanted to be held in high standards? Well, she sure didn't want it anymore.
Of course, the choice was back to Iris, but this time, she wasn't caring, she was honestly a bit annoyed at the two of them making such a huge deal about all of this, "Okay look, I suck and being comforting and knowledgable and I don't have the foggiest clue how to help the two of you. Obviously there is some sort of inherent trauma in both of your lives, but I honestly don't care to play therapist right now. All I wanted was a little help on how to be more refined and I've ended up with a perfectly fine boy--man whatever crying and a rather nice girl screaming and I don't think I did anything wrong. I am not going to choose one of you over the other because I think there is plenty of ways that I could be friends with both of you."
Iris stopped, noticing her accent slipping. She had her own memories and was fighting to keep them out of this. Out of everything.
"Charles, I will certainly take you up on the agreements we made later. Maybe later today or tomorrow or in a few days, I don't care. If you need help, I am hardly the one to give it, because I don't know what it's like and like I said before, I suck at being helpful. I'm sure I will probably seek you out another time to talk about more party things if you are up for it,"
Iris turned to Katherine, taking the moment again to compose herself somewhat, "And you, Katherine, I realize now that I was sort of a jerk to you, but I also don't think that outburst was necessarily validated. Like I said to Charles, I suck at knowing what to say, and I certainly don't know what you've been through. I will also probably come to you for more party help stuff and probably take you up on the dancing guidance soon too,"
"Now, I think it would probably be best if you two either calmed down so we can keep talking or leave. It is up to you, I refuse to choose. If you do leave I will go and find you later so we can talk. Kapeesh?"

After she made sure he finished speaking she spoke right after him while taking a deep breathe"No need to hope at all cause its not getting no where near better and yes half the things you did say I went through favorite hobby being a disgrace yes i've went through most of it and so far i'm trying to hold on to my sanity as strong as possible, but you clearly have given up on trying and i'm so sorry for what i've said and also im so sorry for you as much as we could be similar its still sucks to go threw what you went threw and i sincerely apologise", she looked to the floor and back at him she knew her words were sometimes bullets to people but maybe this has went a tiny bit too far.She played a bit with her cold silver rings then sighed and went to him and stood right in front of him and spoke"i'm willing to start a new beginning if you are ", she let out her hand wanting for a civilised hand shake at least, well she wanted to hug him reassure him he was ok but it wasn't going to be the best choice right now so a hand shake will do.
She also heard Iriss words kath was quite shocked she didn't support him or anything oh well she wasn't gonna judge although katherine didn't say a word to her, she was too busy making sure charles was fine and for charles to say the first words.

Charles was ready to leave, he wasn't their to discuss his life or family. He originally was there to talk with Iris and anyone else who joined them, not to be insulted or anything. Charles composed himself, got a hold of himself as he came to a halt and listened to Iris. A reminder of why he came, the reason so he gave a smile before turning around and laughing " sorry about that but your right Iris, let's forget any of this happened," he smiled a bit as he nodded to her.
Then Katherine seemed moved by the this to and spoke, he bit his lip back as he thought; for a apology your making it sound like your worse again and I really don't feel like bringing up my life again, Charles smiled toward Iris as he spoke " our agreement? Yes I'll still keep it, why wouldn't I," before turning on Katherine and seeing her open hand, naturally he don't do handshakes so he spoke " yeah sure start over," he then pushed her in a playful way on the shoulder as he continued " and I don't do handshakes-" Charles then saw that he spoke in Russian, his preferred language even through he was english as he laughed " sorry about that, I sometimes speak Russian when I don't know it but I said I don't handshakes but yeah sure."
His natural accent was British but he hated the language so he mostly spoke Russian even when he wasn't supposed or when others didn't understand the language, Charles smiled a bit as he spoke again " so how did you guys find out about the Beckett party?" Noticing he was speaking Russian again, Charles laughed a bit before speaking again " sorry again, anyway your both going to Beckett's party? I may see you there if I go home for the holiday, probably will better than staying at the school know for musty odors and sore losers."
