September 25th 2020, sometime in the evening
excuse the cheesy title, as always ;(
Homework, homework, homework. He wasn't going to miss any of it, he had to finish everything. And he had, it was exhausting but he was done, he was only revising what he had learnt now. This year, he was going to save his degrading grades, and maybe even save the house from losing the cup at times. He was going to change everything, he knew that much, but he sort of forgot how much effort it was to be proper with everything, finish your homework as well as study everything and keep revising for the exams. It was far too much and it only took a few days for him to start feeling tired. His clumsiness kept getting worse as his workload increased, dropping things was almost a necessary occurrence whenever he was handling anything, and today was no different as he stared at the books on the floor, his ears still ringing with the noise made from the books dropping that pierced the silence.

He knew the librarian was probably going to run over and scold him for it and he had been here before, for once, he decided he did not wish to "be honest and live up to your mistakes" and simply run. He quickly took all the books and stashed them in his backpack, seeing the librarian out of the corner of his eyes and making a dash for it before he got scolded or got house points taken from him for being a nuisance.

And although he thought everything was fine once he was far enough from the library, panting and leaning on a wall, not altogether used to the physical exercise, he had no idea that he had actually not walked off entirely without a scratch. His diary had slid off under the desk, visible but not enough for Noah to have noticed in his haste.

Unfortunately for Noah, his laziness and attempt at looking "cool" that he had made a year back would bite him back now as the diary didn't actually have his name on it, in fact, it didn't look like a diary at all. It was just a book with a dark brown cover and the first page read;
N. P.
2019,2020
For some reason, a younger Noah thought that was incredibly cool and he never bothered to change it. In fact, he hadn't quite considered the fact that he'd ever lose it, it was really just his fault for thinking it would be a good idea to write in the library instead of writing in the dormitory like usual, but for some reason it felt right to get everything done and just go relax in the dorm and do nothing. Nonetheless, he was... well not really in any trouble but he definitely wasn't in a favourable position.

As Sylvain sat down at the table, he contemplated the anxiety it would have caused him to find that his journal were missing. Two days had passed since he discovered the mysterious notebook, the only indication of its owner's identity were two initials. First he had asked the library and its staff if the tome belonged here. Of course it hadn't, so his next step was canvassing the student body until someone recognized the initials. Unfortunately, the shy lad had little luck in those endeavors. This investigation, or rather returning of property, had taught him several lessons already but he wasn't ready to give up yet. His search coming to yet another dead end, he wistfully stopped to mope about it in the library before attempting another avenue of effort.

His gangly arms resting in a rectangular shape upon the library's oaken table. The contents of this "fort of frustration" included the journal, his unkempt hair and his irritated mutterings. The lad wondered how somebody could go without being seen or heard of within a school so magical it practically oozed interest and was beginning to get suspicious of the notion that nobody knew of or had met a person whose initials were N.P. Though he sat here with evidence in hand, irrefutable proof that whoever's penmanship lie within was created purely for their own interest. Surely if Sylvain found this person and was capable of reuniting them with their lost scribblings they would have some sort of story about how they lost it in a rush, or at the very least be saved from embarrassment. Being an honest lad, he hadn't thought of taking a peak except for in that first moment, dismissing the temptation as the very breach of trust that would undermine his hard work. Perhaps they forgotten it after getting caught up in a conversation, or misplaced it after a long study session. Regardless, the responsibility to return the book to its rightful owner was now his.

A deep sigh slowly exited his forearm enclosure, his frustration clear and palpable as it ate ate his intelligence. A deep breath replaced the sigh, steadying his jangled nerves in a shaky rasp. The past few days of overthinking and obsessing had left him exhausted from his search for answers. Answers that eluded him, as exhausting as they were during the search, made his mind work like magic. Exhausted, frustrated, and head full of magic, Sylvain accepted defeat for the time being. It was okay to let yourself take a break now and again. Sitting back up, Sylvain announced his frustration, head settled on his forearm. "I wish whoever owned this journal would just show up to take it back." He said as he set it to the center of the table.

Noah would very much like to have written down the words, “And after all my effort, I finally managed to find my diary.” in his diary, which he couldn’t for a few reasons, the first and most important one, he hadn’t managed to find his diary. Besides that, he also couldn’t say he had put so much effort into finding it. When he first couldn’t find it, he did panic and then decided to go through his trunk in its entirety, proceeding to lie down in cold sweat when he couldn’t find it.

Of course that wasn’t all he did, he did retrace his steps a bit, going through the places he usually passed by and most importantly inspecting the library but he simply couldn’t find it. How could it have disappeared? The only real thing that made sense was that someone had stolen it but... No one would bother to steal his diary, he knew that much.

But then where could it be? He had used it almost every week, although he did try to use it more often, that’s precisely why he had been keeping it with him, he had to make sure to never do that again, creating logs was useless if he kept losing them like this. Would he just have to buy a new one then? But that book had years worth of memories now, it wasn’t so much as something to write in that he needed back, it wouldn’t be such a big thing if that was the case.

But after his initial search of the few places he frequently visited, he really had no idea where to look and had to give up. He woke up on the second day and kept an eye wherever he went, hoping it would be somewhere. Eventually, he had to give up his search, maybe he should just accept that it’s gone and go back to his normal day to day stuff. Obviously he didn’t want to do that and keep searching for his diary but there really weren’t any options left. Except for asking people but Noah was too dumb to think of that as an option.

He went back to his library, a place he didn't think he'd resort to till he found his diary but that just was how things were unforunately. He made his way to his usual spot where a boy was already seated, well he didn't seem like he was in the mood to talk forunately so he sat down like normal, trying his best to ignore the boy and carrying on with his work, he had a lot now to do because of his search, which wasn't even fruitful...

He shook his heaed, no point in trying to think about it now, it was gone for good, he just had to accept that.

Or maybe things really are easier to find when you don't want to, because it was at that moment that the boy in front of him spoke and it made Noah's eyes go wide, it couldn't be, could it? He looked at the boy and then at the book. Yep, that was most definitely his diary. Why was it with the boy though? He stopped his brain before it could go and form theories on what happened and decided to ask him himself.

"Uh, hey?" He said looking at the boy, he didn't know his name, how was he supposed to call him anyway? "That's my diary, actually..." He said, realising yet again that he should maybe have thought before speaking and didn't know what to say exactly.

Sometimes things happened for no reason at all. At least, this was the conclusion Sylvain came to as his wish came true. Rather than take pride in his efforts, or sit in awe at the magic of wishing, he mostly sat perplexed at how coincidentally things had worked out. Or so he thought.

"It might be," he said with an exasperated gasp, his face stirring with curiosity, eyes rolling with doubt. Slow and methodical, he slid the book over towards Noah, thin fingers guiding the precious and previously lost guide to the inner workings of Noah's mind. Or maybe it was just a book with scribbles in it, Syl had no clue. He had yet to open it, but now that the rightful owner may have appeared, he offered a proposition to the boy. A proposition that would prove his ownership, and although Syl would think himself just as happy to turn the journal over and be done with his search, he wanted to make sure that his due diligence had been paid before the price of his ignorance indebted him. It was what he didn't know that most often got him into the most trouble.

"I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I've spent the past couple days trying to return this to the right person with very little success. If you can tell me whats inside the cover before I open it up then I'll return it to you satisfied, otherwise..." He paused for a moment before remembering introductions were in order. "M'name's Syl by the way. Sylvain Indarys."
He gave the boy a once over. A deadpan face revealed very little, and the air around the boy was one that was hard for Sylvain to describe and feel himself. Sylvain found himself thinking for a moment, that if he hadn't needed to return the journal, he might not have approached this boy. Instead, he might have avoided him altogether.

The forgotten book lay partly between the two, Sylvain guarding it with half-hearted vigilance. Noah could easily swipe it back if he was quick enough, or even snatch it from the scrawny pre-teen's grasp if he wanted to. Sylvain was no athlete or jock, he was a bookworm and a writer. Someone who spent hours reciting formulas until they were memory. Sylvain was unlikely to mind the attempts either way, but still made some show of interest in the contents of the journal, and in returning it to the rightful owner.

As much as Noah would like to tell you that he's not one to trust someone easily, he would have easily given the book if he had been in the boys place. Despite what he thought, he was not at all used to the world or very keen on realising when he might be getting tricked. Which is why the decision made by the boy caught im off guard, he stared at him for a bit, trying to read him, not that he was particularly good at it. He didn't look that strong, he couldn't be too sure but the expression didn't look all that much like he was trying to bully Noah or anything. And it did slowly make sense to him why he was a bit reluctatn to give it away right and he sighed, there wasn't any other way, not like there was anything too important written in there to begin with. And maybe he did hear him say "before opening it", implying he hadn't opened it before.

It was also werid that he decided to introduce himself in the midst of it. For a second he thought the mood was more tense but it made him realise that maybe the guy wasn't playing with him but really just trying to make sure the book didnt' fall into the wrong hands, good on him. "Noah Page, and alright, seems fair enough."

He thought back, interestingly enough he barely ever actually read his diary despite being so adamant on trying to keep up with it, without much success, the diary was years old by now and was just a little less than half filled. Although the age did show on it, it was perhaps the least appealing book he owned, partly due to the age and probably because he mishandled it far too much, well, it was a journal afterall, wasn't it? Where did he even get it? He couldn't quite remember but it was probably with all his other schoolbooks, he did it around that time, didn't he? Oh, wait he was getting carried away... First entry, yeah.

After a few seconds of trying to remember, he looked back at the boy, "Well it's been a long while so I can't remember exactly what it would be but the first page is my first entry, probably written on the second day or something of my first year, two years back, talking about being excited to be here or some nonsense like that probably, don't think you'd find a lot of diaries that have entries from that long ago, pretty sure that should be enough. I'm sure no one else would be trying to get their hands on my diary to begin with." He said calmly, he still had no idea what his actual first entry was, it felt like it would've been memorable to him but it somehow wasn't, all he could remember was that he wanted to use the diary to record his days at Hogwarts so it would only make sense for it to have entries written during his first few days at Hogwarts.

Fairness being what it was, Sylvain was pleased when Noah introduced himself in kind. Sylvain himself journalled just about everything he did. Didn't matter if it was a feeling that bothered him, or a bug he found. Sometimes he even checked his journal just to say "Nothing significant happened today." His journal served two purposes. The first was to remind him exactly where he last left his thoughts. Sometimes the transition from activity to activity came with distractions and obligations, but his journal always kept track of what he wanted from life.

Second, the journal was substantial evidence of his efforts, or rather was becoming substantial evidence of his efforts to excel in potion-making. Since his arrival to Hogwarts, the lad felt as though his journal had gotten as much attention as the rest of the library's worth of books he'd read to date. Not only was it becoming a the tome sum of his knowledge on the stuff, but it was the detailed and intricate notes of someone who was passionate in their craft. To lose such an priceless object of his would have been death and loss of a part of who he was. So naturally he held the same level of respect for the, up until then, stranger's journal in front of him.

Sure enough, Syl opened to the first page, and referenced the date. It wasn't exactly concrete proof that the journal belonged to him, but it was also clear that his name matched the initials engraved on the book, so the journal surely belonged to the boy across who had claimed it by chance. "I was just about to give up on returning this," Sylvain said as he slid the journal across the table to Noah gently continuing his sentence,"I guess I'm pretty lucky you showed up when you did." It wasn't too strange that Noah had come back to the library, and Sylvain figured he'd learned a valuable lesson. You can look under all the rocks you'd like, but you'll always find what you're looking for under the last one. Or so it felt that way, what with the library being the last rock he had to turn over.

"Sorry about all the rigmarole," he said with a gentle smile to compensate for the seriousness in his tone earlier. "I don't know what I'd do if I lost my journal, much less how I'd feel if it ended up in the wrong person's hands. You should be more careful."

Noah let out a sigh of relief, he didn't really feel like doing pointless stuff like answering some silly questions just to get his diary back, he was already exhausted from his past few days of searching for his diary and really needed to get back to work. Of course, he was relieved the diary was back and he wouldn't have to worry about it again. Then again, it wasn't like the diary had anything sensitive in it, it was just random stuff that was pretty embarrassing if someone found out but no one would be able to figure out it's his to begin with, come to think of it how many people even would know his first name at all? Very few, he'd guess.

He nodded at the guy and sat down opposite to him, this was where he was going to sit anyway. He took the diary back and looked at it for a while before putting it aside, what a waste of time the past few days had been, although it had been the same for the boy in front of him, Sylvain, wasn't it? "Well, you have my thanks, don't think I would've found it otherwise."

He started getting some of his books out to study, putting the diary back in safely, he'll have to make sure he doesn't carry it around again, not like he even wrote it in often enough to justify carrying it around. He kept arranging stuff as Syl talked, his ears flinching a bit at the last bit, he wasn't quite a huge fan of people lecturing him around, did they think he didn't have any common sense and intentionally got things wrong?

"Yes, I've obviously figured that out now, thank you. I'll keep it in my dormitory instead of carrying it around, the worst that'll happen is it gets lost in my trunk." He said, trying not to sound bitter for the first bit, the guy did help him after all. He sighed as he finally got things in order, back to studying...

Content with the book's return to its rightful owner, and with Noah's admission to be more careful, Sylvain was satisfied with himself to say the least. Raising from his seat, he would turn to another section of the library where he'd earlier noted a good waste of time to be. Any area where he was free to read in solitude would do just fine, but this one was close enough to Noah that Syl would never leave his field of vision. The lad felt better for having done a good thing, or at least he felt good for doing what he thought was right, and that was more than a good reason to treat himself to something more entertaining than the all too typical studying.

He'd spent enough time studying and this month so far and not enough time enjoying himself. He chose a warm corner, placed his seat carefully so that his back was to the wall, and pulled a book from off the shelves. He chose nothing more than a bit of useless pulp fiction, something less than fulfilling but more than boring, and put his nose to the page. He would keep an eye out for Noah whenever he saw the boy from then on. Not going so far as to stare at him or bother him from his studies, but enough to catch him if he managed to somehow leave his journal behind once more.

Syl was, after all things considered, seriously lacking anything more important to do than try to be useful where he could.
