Lorelei hefted her book bag onto the dusty table in the empty classroom. She had an open class period, and figured she ought to use the spare time to practice. She pulled each book and notebook out of her bag, setting them on the table in front of her.
"Okay," she muttered to herself, setting up her inkwell and quill, "If I start with charms, I can work my way throgh and finish Potions at Lunch, I should be able to keep up. There's a lot more work here then there was at Coal Hill." She settled down to work, nudging the old door mostly shut.
She flipped open The Standard Book of Spells Grade 1, sending up a small cloud of dust. Coughing, she waited for the air to clear, closing her eyes to keep the grainy dust out. She drew her pale, elder wood wand and flipped through the book, looking for the levitation charm they'd been discussing in class the day before. She began by practicing the wand movement, carefully tracing the path shown in the book. She started whispering the incantation, trying to line up the phrasing with motion. She wasn't actually attempting to cast, just figure out what she needed to do in class later. She continued working, occasionally flipping back and forth between subjects. She finished up an essay on the theory behind the levitation charm, and moved over to History of Magic.

It's Debatable
@Lorelei PreissMiranda had spent the last ten minutes standing by a window, looking through the glass panes out at the rain, as if staring at it hard enough would make it go away. Seriously, she had a free period, and with next to no homework, or at least easy things she could finish with minimal work, she saw no reason to waste a perfectly fine amount of time inside. But apparently mother nature didn't agree with her, because...well, this.
The steady patter began to annoy her substantially enough that Miranda moved away, letting out a great sigh as she headed down the corridor, walking blindly. Certain corridors in Hogwarts were familiar enough to her by then, in her second year, that she didn't have to worry about getting lost as long as she stuck to them. But the moment she stepped off, it was either pay attention or wind up in the dungeons, where it was rumored that hags were lurking. Yeah...no thanks.
She soon came upon an open door that led into an empty classroom. Curious, Miranda peered inside. Apparently the room wasn't so empty after all - she spotted a brown-haired girl reading a book at an otherwise empty table, in an otherwise empty classroom. Huh.
"Ah, hello?" Miranda called, stepping through the threshold tentatively. "I'm Miranda. And I couldn't help but notice the book you were reading...the Warlock Convention of 1289?" She shrugged, a small smile evident on the edges of her mouth. "An interesting topic. You're in your second year, too, then?" She spoke that because she was well aware that the subject was taught to second years in their HoM class.

Lorelei jumped up, dropping her grey quill, startled at the sound of someone entering the classroom. She whirled around to see a blonde girl, who couldn't be more then a year or so older then Lorelei standing in the doorway. The stange girl asked her somethingz nd Lorelei paused.
"Ah, no." she answered after a moment, taking time to register and process the girl's question about her work. "I just...I get distracted easily when it comes to history, and start reading on something I don't actually need to study yet. I was ment to be working on the Gargoyle Strike of 1911, and happened on this chapter while flipping through to find it. I ought to know better than to start reading whatever I end up near, but." she shrugged and shifted in the seat awkwardly, picking her quill back up and playing with it.
"Are you looking for a spot to study?" she asked "I'm not in your way am I?" she continued playing with her pen, then noticed the Ravenclaw crest on the girl's robe. "Oh! You're a Ravenclaw too?" she tapped her quill on the desk she sat at, wondering if she'd seen this girl before, in the common room perhaps.

It's Debatable
@Lorelei PreissMiranda made an alarmed expression at Lorelei's reaction to her approach, but it quickly morphed into an abashed grin.
"But it's hard to resist learning something new," Miranda finished, hoping that was along the lines of what the other girl had meant. She herself had done the same thing many times before - in fact, she was currently occupied in working on third year Defense Against The Dark Arts spells, instead of her second year ones, because she'd mastered them the previous year.
A familiar suspicion hit her, and Miranda glanced at the girl's robes. Sure enough, there was a blue eagle with its wings spread on them. "After all, it's kind of the Ravenclaw calling card. Wit and learning, and all that." She grinned, then shuffled a few steps closer, just to get fully out of the hallway.
Perhaps the girl noticed, because she followed up by asking if she was in Miranda's way. But before she could answer the question, the other Ravenclaw seemed to notice the crest Miranda had sewn onto her chest, and was quick to comment on it.
"Ravenclaw through and through," Miranda replied with a full-out grin. "And no, you're definitely not in my space. There's plenty of room for the both of us...if you're okay with me being here?" She glanced over her shoulder, out into the hallway. "I can go study in the common room if I have to."

Lorelei shook her head. "Nope, you're good. It's a whole classroom, there's plenty of space" She shifted her seat and turned back to her text book, forcing herself to turn past the International Warlock convention and find the Gargoyle Strike of 1911, and began scribbling notes in a dark green ink.
Gargoyles did have a union?
Wildcat strike - strike was not authorized by union
Did not organize strike with wizard run union
Unionized(?) workers went on strike
Strikers nearly won
??? Text seems to be missing something
She kept flipping back and forth, but she couldn't find what brought the downfall of the strikers. She added a few theories
Was there a union? book not clear.
Didn't go through union to organize strike?
Refused terms set by higher ups?
Strikers turned violent?
Then at the bottom
Find more sources
She moved from the overview to causes of the strike, scribbling more notes. After a few moments, she caught herself humming, and identified the tune as Seize The Day from the muggle musical Newsies, which her dad insisted on taking her to see. She blushed, slightly embarrassed that she was on the verge to singing while studying. She looked up to see if Merinda had heard it.
"Sorry," she mumbled.

"Thanks," Miranda replied with a nod of recognition. She then moved off to go sit at a nearby table, pulling a couple books from her overburdened shoulder-bag as she did. One was on the four founders of Hogwarts, while another detailed magical or otherwise strange artifacts from wizarding history. The latter book was marked with a bookmark that made it flip open to a page detailing an elaborate image of a silvery sword with a pommel bearing a large ruby - the sword of Godric Gryffindor, founder of the lion house. The other book remained closed, showing nothing more than a title written in spidery, elegant script and an image of the Hogwarts Crest.
Miranda traced the outline of the sword, then glanced up at the sound of an unfamiliar tune being hummed by her study room partner. "No, it's okay," she replied when the other girl apologized for the disturbance. "Actually...I never learnt your name. I'm Miranda." She smiled as warmly as she could, trying to seem welcoming and kind. The information she was currently studying was mostly extra - the chances of it coming onto a quiz or test were relatively low, so she wasn't too concerned about not learning it. However, perhaps the other girl would like some help with whatever she was studying...

Lorelei smiled, a bit awkwardly.
"I'm Lorelei," she said. "Hey, do you know if the Gargoyles of Windlow Castle had a union? The textbook says that calling it a wildcat strike may be misleading, but doesn't say explain why clearly. A wildcat strike should be clear, either they had a union or not, and if they did, they did or didn't have it's support for the strike. It shouldn't be this difficult, but I can find anything about whether they even had a union." Hopefully the second year would be able to help. Lorelei searched through the chapter on the strike again, wondering if she'd missed something.
"Honestly, it shouldn't be this hard to find. It says they didn't have a representative to speak to the humans, but not whether that was because there was no union or because the union didn't give them support for it. she shook her head sighing. "It's almost as though whoever wrote the textbook or dubbed it a wildcat strike doesn't even know what a wildcat strike is! she ranted, quieter this time. She stared at her dark emerald notes, frustrated. She loved history, but whoever tried to define the strike was obviously not as great a historian as they probably thought.

@Lorelei PreissMiranda listened intently to the girl's - Lorelei's - rant, then cocked her head to the side as she considered it. "I don't think they had a Union. Those are kind of muggle things, or at the very least not used for magical animated statues." She'd done the selfsame essay work in her first year, but it had been one of her first, and the amount of notes had been disastrous and many points had been missing. She didn't remember much of it now.
The Ravenclaw felt sympathetic to Lorelei's plight. She had more than once felt deprived of a crucial detail in her work. The knowledge something wasn't right tended to nag her like an itch she just couldn't quite scratch.
"Besides, there's got to be an answer somewhere. Or you could ask Professor Masoud about that - he's sure to know." Miranda shrugged, letting her pencil drop to the tabletop as she turned her body to fully face Lorelei. "And there's the librarian. Have you met her yet? I haven't." Miranda abruptly cut off, conscious that she'd gotten far off topic.
"Ah...so yeah, I don't there was a Union. After all, doesn't it say that the Wizards didn't notice it was going on at first? Surely the Union, if there had been one, would have made sure they castle residents knew."

Lorelei sighed. 'wizards' she thought
"But that's exactly my point," she said "Did the wizards not notice because there was no union, or because it really was a wildcat strike and the union didn't even know? And if there wasn't one, why are they teaching it as a wildcat strike, it's not. there's no maybe about it." she groaned her frustration again. "Honestly, they've made everything ten times more confusing then it has to be. Yes or no, there's no maybe to any of these questions. I thought wizards had better kept records from this time period then muggles did. I guess not if the first subject in History of Magic isn't even clear enough to know whether or not it was actually a wildcat strike."
Lorelei kinda felt bad that Miranda was being subjected to this rant, but she couldn't stop. The words kept coming like, in the words of muggle movie and broadway musical Mean Girls, word vomit. But seriously, wizards acted like they were all superior to muggles when they couldn't keep simple facts straight. The newsboy strike in new york in 1899, not a wildcat strike. The miner strike from 1984 to 1985 in Britian, while more complicated, was technically a wildcat strike since local councils did not support it and there was no vote about it at the national level. Union or no union. Wildcat strike or not. It isn't that difficult.

@Lorelei PreissMiranda was floundering. It was a rare occasion she didn't know something about the wizarding world. Sure, she was used to be clueless when it came to muggle...but wizards? The Ravenclaw prided herself in her knowledge.
So when Lorelei mentioned something other than strikes, she latched onto it. "Wizards and witches keep very good records," she argued irritably, although her annoyance was more for herself than the other girl. However, maybe Lorelei wouldn't take it the same way. "Better than muggles I'm sure. Up until recently, their sophistication compared to ours was simply primitive. I mean, look at their healing methods! Poison as antibiotics? Really?" She normally tried not to be prejudiced against non-wizarding folk, but it wasn't prejudiced to point out facts, was it?
Her research sat quietly on the table behind her, ignored completely for the moment. More important matters were at hand than researching things for the third time. Talking to others always seemed to be more enlightening than reading dusty old manuals - most of the time, anyways. There were a few exceptions that she knew of, if the person was exceedingly uneducated or the book exceedingly fascinating. But that didn't happen often in her experience.
