Millie hugged her father goodbye before walking through the brick wall that she had been instructed to walk through. Tears filled her eyes as soon as she opened them. She left a lump in her throat. Great, she thought. I hope I'm not homesick the school year...

Millie tried distracting herself by looking around at all of the people.. There were groups of people all over the place, talking, laughing, and just being loud. Millie felt alone. This was a pattern she had noticed since she had started trying to make friends with other witches or wizards. She would walk into a room and see everyone already in their friend groups, and all of a sudden she was feeling lonely. This kind of thing never happened to non-magic users, or muggles, and Millie was almost frustrated at her problem.

Then the train came. Smoke filled the air, and most of the people stopped talking, captivated by the beautiful train. Millie felt a tiny spark of excitement deep in her heart and decided to let it grow into a blazing fire. She grabbed her trunk and ran into the train, poking her head into the first compartment.

"Can I sit here?" she asked with a pleasant smile on her face.

Lily had already waved goodbye to her mother and eight year old sister before she got on the train. The compartments were filling up fast, and she somehow managed to get in an empty one. She got out her phone and held it up high, hoping for some signal or wifi.

Disappointed, she checked around the compartment for a charging point. She sighed. It seemed that the magical world had no need for technology at all.

The train was not moving yet and she got her book out. 'Becoming Fluent in Welsh' she read. Lily had been wanting to become fluent in the language for years now, and was nearly there. Nobody who she knew, other than her father, was fluent. It took him ten years. Lily had a knack for it, and she only started when she was eight.

She had only just got her book out when a girl with wavy brown hair and brown eyes walked in and spoke.

"Can I sit here?" the girl asked with a pleasant smile on her face.
"Of course," Lily replied, "Do you want some sweets?" she asked the girl whilst holding a bag of haribo tangfastics out her bag to her, "I'm Lily Rowenna Cawthi, what's your name?" She was scared. What if this girl doesn't like her?

She sat down and Lily could feel them already becoming friends.

"Of course," the girl had replied, and she had offered Millie some sweets. She was relieved that the girl had replied kindly instead of kicking her out. She had gotten a lot of dirty looks in Diagon Alley for just asking for directions. However, instead of hostility, she was greeted with kindness and warmth.

The girl introduced herself as Lily Rowenna Cawthi just as Millie had taken a seat. She grinned at Lily and gave her an awkward thumbs up. She had been trying to stop doing that, but when it finally seemed like she had broken out of that habit, it came back. At least Lily didn't seem to think it was weird, so Millie figured it was okay. Awkward thumbs up were better than awkward peace signs, anyway.

She set her trunk down next to her seat and sat down. She noticed that Lily was holding a book, and she glanced at the cover. "Becoming Fluent in Welsh," it read. Millie was surprised that someone would be able to concentrate on something as frustrating as learning a language with all of the excitement in the air.

"You're studying Welsh? That's so cool! I had to learn French for school, but I never really practiced out of school."

"Well, I am Welsh." Lily told her, happy that at least someone took an interest in her. She took her yellow headband out her hair and gave her ears a little massage. It hurt her ears a little, but she liked it and tucked it back behind her short chestnut hair.
The girl looked surprised at the fact of where she came from. "Not everybody here's English, you now." They both smiled as the train rattled onward. "My mother's been teaching me for years, but I still need to practice, even though I'm not at home. It takes years. It took her ten. I've only been learning for three now, and I've got a sister back home who started only last month." She sighed. Lily was already homesick, and she was dreading what the year ahead held. Without her family. But with a new unbreakable bond. A friendship. But not a forced friendship with her sister because she had no friends. No. This was a real friendship.

Lily's voice had started off strong, but towards the end, she started to taper off.
"Um," Millie asked. "Are you...okay?"
Lily nodded and smiled (sorry for controlling your character). Millie smiled back, unsure if she was really okay but also aware that she shouldn't pry. Especially if she wanted to be friends with her. No, being nosy wouldn't do.

She popped a Haribo fangtastic into her mouth and pulled out a book from her trunk. "I'm so excited for Care of Magical Creatures!" Millie said. "I read some of this book before arriving, but I couldn't really focus on it."

Millie had been fascinated by the Puffskeins and Pygmy Puffs. She had decided that those two adorable balls of fluff were her favourite animal from the wizarding world. They reminded her of the first and only pet that Millie had ever had, which was a rat. She had named the rat after the sour, red berry known as the cranberry. Cranberry eventually died of natural causes, but Millie, who was attached to her pet, spent months mourning her late hamster. Her parents had decided that she wouldn't be able to cope with the death of another pet, and they were probably right. Besides, with her new life ahead of her, she might not even have time for a pet.

Millie popped a haribo tangfastic into her mouth whilst she pulled out a book from her trunk, and Lily put a few in her mouth too. "I'm so excited for Care of Magical Creatures!" Millie said. "I read some of this book before arriving, but I couldn't really focus on it."
"That's cool," Lily replied. "I'm really excited for Potions, but I just can't seem to get my head around it. I mean, you get these solid ingredients, cut them, put them in a cauldron. How do the ingredients all come together to make a liquid? It just doesn't make sense!" By Millie's face, Lily could tell she hadn't given it much thought, and had maybe come from a non-magical family, like she had. "It's like baking a cake." Lily had started to control herself, she wanted the first person she met to be her friend. "You add the milk, sugar, flour and eggs; you bake it; you get a cake." Lily really wished Millie didn't think she was weird in any way, like most people thought she was. "I've read some of the herbology book, I really love plants. But I had no idea that some of these plants existed. Some sound ridiculous." Lily gets out the book from her trunk. She reads aloud. "Devil's Snare. A plant usually placed as traps. Devil's snare will suffocate anybody who does not know its weakness."

Millie tried to hide the fact that she hadn't really thought about potions. At all. She had almost no knowledge of the craft, and she hadn't had time to look over the textbook. It sounded interesting, and Millie was fascinated by the idea of a potion.

Lily then proceeded to explain that making a potion was like making a cake. Millie had made a cake several times before, so this was a helpful analogy. Millie was usually annoyed by people who showed off their intelligence or kindness like a badge, but Lily seemed to be genuine. It didn't bother Millie, at least.

Lily then pulled out a herbology book and started talking about a plant called Devil's Snare. "That sounds terrifying," Millie said after Lily had finished reading a sentence from the book. "I hope there won't be any Devil's Snare at Hogwarts. Well, it would be cool to see, but not from too close."

"I doubt there will be. I mean, aren't they supposed to teach us things ,noy get us killed?" Lily said after a long thought process. "But it would be cool to actually see something that could kill you!" Lily stopped there, Millie's face of the topic said it all for her. "Charms looks cool as well," she said. "I've always wanted to make plates fly in the cafe back home, so I don't have to carry everything." Millie looked confused. "My family own a cafe on the outskirts of Cardiff, called 'The Welsh Bean'" Soon, Lily started to read a book, whilst trying her phone for wifi or, at least, some signal. Still, there was nothing.

Millie looked up at this, and Lily could instantly tell that she was in the same situation as her. No magical blood at all. So she wasn't the only one."You're muggle-born too?" Lily asked. Millie nodded. "That's cool, what was your reaction when an owl flew in" It had only just occurred to Lily that she might be able to make some actual friends here. It made her happy.

"Yeah!" Millie said excitedly. "I am muggle-born! You are too? I don't have a phone but I brought my iPod!"
"What was your reaction when the owl flew in?" Lily asked. Millie laughed, remembering the first time the Hogwarts letter had come.
"It actually scared my sister the first time she saw it," Millie said thoughtfully. "My parents weren't home when it arrived, so when I told them that it was an owl who dropped the letter, they didn't believe me. My older sister was in the house with me but she was on the phone so she didn't see it."

Millie furrowed her eyebrows, thinking back to the incident. "My parents opened the letter but barely read past the second line. They thought it was a prank and put the letter onto a high shelf so that I wouldn't be able to read it. I never read that letter." Suddenly worried that she had been boring her new friend, she stopped talking. "Um, yeah," she said shyly. "It took five letters for them to finally believe that it wasn't a prank, and even then, they didn't really think that there was anything special about me. I'm surprised that they even let me go to Hogwarts, but they're not bad people, so I don't know why I'm so surprised..."
