Well, it was clear his usual way of waiting it out until someone would start a conversation he was interested in was not working. Granted, there were lots of chats going around, but most of them concerned things such as dates, and even at a social event such things were less of his concern. The sheer size of the crowd felt a bit suffocating, and it absolutely did not help that barely anyone was familiar with masks ranging from covering their entire face to only the eyes.

The snake decided to approach a pink-haired fellow, one he didn’t recognise at all. Back in muggle school, dying of hair to any unnatural colour was a crime as heinous as burglary, so there was a spark of curiosity as to the choice the boy made. Of course, asking someone why their hair looked as it was wasn’t quite the best conversation starter, but it was as good as it got. Other doubts began to tug at his mind, as there always were

Once the other had finished dancing, a hypnotic sight compared to Leonard’s own abilities (or rather, inabilities) in rhythmic movement, the Slytherin walked over. The only things familiar about the other were the traits exhibiting from eyes the shade of marble, that of lighthearted mischief and endless smiles. Good, he thought. If the dancer was indeed friendly, that meant less of a chance for him to be swept off his feet by way of a painful spell.

So, seems this place is shaping up to be social event of the season, innit?” He said, attempting at banter with a grin, though his was likely a bit more forced. Leonard sat next to him, absentmindedly reaching for a piece of the food from behind. “You’re an amazing dancer, by the way. Your hair looks brilliant, as well. Reminds me of candy floss.

That’s, uh, a compliment, by the way. I like candy floss.

Not the best start, but a start nonetheless.

T'was the night of the Masquerade Ball, and in the glow of firelight, one overzealous lion dreamed of dancing and fright.
Indeed, Marshal possessed a rare ability, which allowed him to enjoy the process of imagining what an event might be like almost as much as attending the activity itself; for in his imagination, there was always an abundance of action, drama, and romance, to the extent that the scenarios in his mind often drew near the point of... well, unrealistic. Sadly, reality seemed content to thwart most of his ideas, that is, until quite recently, when he had received a particular letter by way of owl, and the impossible had suddenly become possible. The more he lived in this magical world, the less farfetched his wildest fantasies appeared, creating more anticipation for each coming day, and a growing belief that something truly spectacular might occur at any given moment.

Despite the superlative nature of his imagination, it had often proven no match for what this new world of his had to offer. For example, he had always pictured ghosts as mysterious, evil and quite possibly nonexistent, and yet one day at this school had revealed the presence of many spectral beings, most of which happened to be rather friendly. What a marvelous spin that information had put on Halloween this year.
This place had a tendency to prove the unthinkable as every day events, which only served to elevate Marshal's imagination to unprecedented levels. And that meant he could have that much more fun.

The first-year had always held a special appreciation for Halloween, as well as the fall season in general. There was simply a unique feeling surrounding this time of year, wrought by change - a gentle decrease in temperature, a shift in the coloration of the world around them. With fall came warm jackets, irresistible fragrances, and the crackling of a fire, accompanied by a sense of peace and safety. With it came gratitude for all you had, and a chance for reflection upon yourself, your goals, and the things that truly mattered. Not to mention the sheer hilarity of scaring the hair off of your friends as the end of October grew near.

The attitude and coloration of the decorations that currently adorned various parts of the castle invoked these familiar sensations, along with a good bit of nostalgia, as he was led to think of his family, the celebrations and fun that they had shared throughout his life.
With the nostalgia came an inevitable bout of homesickness. After all, it was his first Halloween away from his humble home in London. But even still, this was a new adventure, something more exciting than any previous endeavor. Besides, what reason did he have to feel melancholy when there was a beautiful girl awaiting him in the ballroom? He certainly hoped she hadn't come to the conclusion that the whole thing was a terrible mistake.
With that anxious thought drifting through his previously distracted mind, he shook himself from the slight daze, quickening his pace in hopes of catching Melissa before she made any rash decisions.

A few minutes passed before he found himself staring through the ballroom doors, left open to afford unbarred passage to those in attendance. Many people already moved about the large room. Marshal never had been one for stingy punctuality, but this time he had an excuse - specifically an uncooperative bow-tie.
Much estranged to the ways of fine dressing, the Gryffindor had never worn such a thing, nor a vest... nor the fancy dancing shoes his mother had bought for him. She had always wished for him to be a bit more "dressy" than his nature permitted, so he was certain that she had experienced no end of joy upon hearing that he planned to attend a Masquerade ball, the formal dress code of which he had previously been unaware. Evidently, his suspicion was true, as his mother had included a letter within the package containing the costume, demanding that he take a picture of himself and send it to her.

Presently, he straightened the pestiferous bow-tie before striding confidently through the open doorway, casting his eyes about the space in search of his companion. The mask he wore hindered his sight slightly more than he would have liked. Fortunately, it only covered half of his face, permitting one eye to better view his surroundings.

As he scanned the crowd, the blonde-haired lion developed an uncomfortable concern that had failed to cross his mind before. How was he to recognize Melissa if she was wearing a mask? He supposed he would be able to perceive her features well enough to keep track of the girl once he spotted her, but there was one problem. He had not, indeed, spotted her. He had no earthly clue what she might be wearing, nor where she might be hidden among the crowd.

In hindsight, the two of them could have planned this better.

Upon searching, he noticed one boy who, following a squinting examination, looked an awful lot like Leonard wearing a mustache. Immediately, a short burst of laughter escaped his lips, one hand shooting up to cover his mouth. That costume was spectacular, in his overly-amused opinion. The outfit ignited a spark of recognition within him as well. He was sure he recognized who Leo was supposed to be, though he couldn't recall the name. It was a late artist, certainly.
He felt a strong urge to approach the snake, whom he had come to think of as a good friend. He was rather curious how the Slytherin had fared after their recent, dramatically amusing incident. But he forced the urge down. Right now, he needed to find Melissa.

Resuming his survey of the crowd, Marshal saw a flash of red hair. Focusing on its owner, he observed a number of freckles peaking out from behind the girl's mask. The body type and facial features seemed correct, so he hurried in that direction.

"Melissa?" he called as he approached. Growing near, he was able to all but confirm her identity. He also noticed another boy nearby, posed as though he had been speaking to Marshal's date, but thought nothing of it. He couldn't possibly be upset with the Ravenclaw for conversing with another, especially given his late arrival.
"I'm so very sorry," he exclaimed, clasping his hands together in a demonstration of his regret concerning his transgression. "I tried my best to make it on time, but this dratted bow-tie had other plans. In fact, I'm convinced it hates me, but don't worry, the feeling is mutual." He then turned his eyes to the other boy. "And who might I have to thank for keeping you company in my absence?"

As he heard katherines words katherine noticed he was startled by her words and a grin was drawn on his face he suddenly spun katherine but she went with it as she spun she kept locking eyes with him and her dress spun behind her beautifully she came back but softly and gracefully and she placed back her soft arms on his shoulder but instead she came a bit closer than last time due to the spin, as she locked eyes with him she knew that he was deep in his thought she kept focus on the dance since shes good at keeping focus on any dance while doing something else in other words multi tasking. After a while he responded acting like he doesn't know what katherine was talking about and he smiled then he responded and said that he was happy dancing with katherine and asked if she was,Katherine then knew it was game on she wouldn't quit now or never ,it was actually quite funny watching him try to be egotistical but she responded with "of course I am don't I show it", she grinned softly and drew a soft smile on her face and continued locking eyes with him she noticed he had icy eyes which actually was a handsome feature in him but that didn't stop her.

after a minute or two she spoke" well i'm sorry for asking too much questions i'm just getting to know my dance partner although i do have a feeling that ur a perfectionist.", she took a small breath and continued"you love perfecting things your studies everything even when it comes to helping people like now your trying to perfect the dance which even me i'm surprised you can dance this good usually the guy stumbled on my heels", she grinned softly and spoke"You also try to be nice and try to comfort people but deeply you judge them like try to figure them out but no one knows if its genuine I for one would love to witness that but as i said you hide under your charming smile and fool them by your handsome looks mr Alexander ,i'm guessing i don't know the truth but judging from all the rich pure blooded people i've come across because of my family i've seen people like that maybe even worse and evil so don't be as surprised if i got some of it right", she gave a soft smile after a bit she looked down and back up slowly and thought to herself a little teasing wont hurt anyone she said"well it looks like you cant handle a little bit of..", she paused and looked at his lips for a few seconds then looked right in his eyes and said"teasing", she gave off a small smirk and softened her eyes to make them a bit flirty but not noticeable she continued with the dance in waiting for his response but she tried teasing him in way so he doesnt think shes all over him trying to flirt she tried it because she wanted to see his reaction after all a little teasing wont hurt anyone since she was good at doing that.Lets see how long he could last staying civil under her charms she thought to herself, she continued the dance perfectly and gracefully making sure she isnt showing off, she made sure she didn't miss a single step of the dance.

Soon, a boy was walking up to them. Lily felt better about it all now. It was much easier to talk to someone who has the courage to talk to them than the other way around.

When he had joined the little circle-shape they had going on, her spoke. "Quel charma-" Lily had no idea what he was saying. Now she knew how everyone else felt when she spoke Welsh. "What lovely outfits you all have" he said. "My name's André. And you three are?"

Now it was Lily's chance to properly get to know some people, but they all looked older than her. Would they see her as a tidgy first year? "Lily," she said to André, blushing behind her mask. His theme was black as well, he had a similar mask on, a black suit and a flower (Lily thought it was a rose) in the pocket. Lily liked it, and could tell the four of them were getting to know each other quite well. She might even call them friends to some extent. But acquaintances would do for now.

"And this is Scarlett and Lucia, if you don't know them already." There it was again. The face saying 'You weirdo!' But this was good. People at Hogwarts all seemed to be weirdos. And she liked it.

The day had finally come.

October 16th. A charming date. Getting ready in her dorm and rushing up to the ballroom, Lindsey couldn’t help taking a deep breath. It was a ball. A real ball, in Hogwarts. She had missed the Secret Blossom Ball in April, and now, it was the time to pay the things she had missed back.

She still couldn’t get through the excitement of being asked to the ball. Wyatt asked her. That was important…very. She missed his jet black eyes that were so deep. She loved listening him playing the piano quietly, and his dancing must be enjoyable as well. Seriously Lindsey herself was never good at dancing, but at least she could try. Yes, she could do it.

Roaring past the hundreds of corridors, the second year made her way to the ballroom. Speaking of the ball room…a month ago she met the boy she secretly liked here. Time passed quick…

And there she was. Standing in front of the large wooden door of the ball room. It seemed that she was a bit late, for many people were already in the room — dancing or talking. Her heart heated fast. It was the time…

She wasn’t surprised that Wyatt wasn’t here before she had arrived. She needed time actually…to take a deep breath before meeting her boy. Her charming date. She hadn’t found Marshal and Lizzie as well. The two were clearly late too, or maybe Lizzie’s having a hot chocolate drink somewhere and Marshal…he must be with his own date somewhere. Must be, which is…a bit sad.

The girl soon spotted Scarlett and Lucia. The red headed and raven headed were over there, talking with a girl [Lily] and a boy [André] she didn’t know. Better not to disturb and interrupt their conversation…maybe the boy was her one of her friend’s date? She didn’t know.

Cautiously she walked away. Today was definitely not a trouble causing day, so she’d better control herself before throwing her very own self into some impetuous things. Wishing to find someone to talk with, she glanced around. And the girl became very glad when she saw Cassandra.

“Cash!” merrily she jumped towards them, who was there near the food tables. Lemonade. Lindsey’s eyes sparkled. “How do you do?” she asked, grabbing a glass of lemonade. And there was also someone [Mars] she was unacquainted with. “Hello! It’s nice to meet you. Name’s Lindsey.” she grinned, and introduced herself.

All was well. At least it seemed now.

"Oh, Heather? Kara started to answer the girls inquiry "Heather is my friend from Ravenclaw, and like I had mentioned before, she looks quite a bit like you. And about the safety...let's just say, magic has it's ups and downs."

Kara looked at the girl. Why didn't she notice before?!? She was clearly uncomfortable!

Sighing and then turning to the blonde woman with a sympathetic look, and then she started to talk.

"I notice my words have somewhat troubled you, ma'am. I truly meant no harm. I just don't want to be the cause of someone getting hurt for my stupid mistakes again. I was once ignorant of danger, and I do not want others to be like myself of the past. Once again, do not take my words to offence." She pointed to the large scar on the side of her lip.

Kara then took a sip of her drink, and returned her gaze to the woman.

"Due to my past mistakes, I feel as though I am responsible for those around me, so if any trouble comes our way, you can count on me to help you out!"

She had let off some steam with that speech, so she decided to soften the conversation.

"Well never mind that. We should at least have some fun instead of just waiting for something bad to happen. Do you want to dance together? If you don't know how, I can show you. But only if you accept.

Outfit
The skirt to her dress isn't quite as sheer as in the image.
Should anyone take it upon themselves to swipe either pair of the girls shoes, let them feel the combined wrath of Slytherin and Gryffindor.
Sarah felt her cheeks heat up slightly at the compliment. She knew she wasn’t bad when it came to dancing but people didn’t often tell her as much. “Thank you,” She smiled, making mental note to tell Paisley about all the mischief she’d managed to get up too in ‘ballrooms like this’ over the years. She had plenty of stories to tell about that. She realised she was immeasurably thankful for that first day in the library that the girls had first met. Thankful both for the chance encounter, but also thankful of Paisley for not simply walking away when Sarah’s questionable social skills had come into play.

I’m happy you didn’t just walk away when you realised my social skills left something to be desired and that sarcasm is my go to,” She admitted. It was something that had lost her many potential friendships in the past though sarcasm seemed to be her favoured defence when she was in uncharted territory. She was trying her best to stop that being the case. She was pulled from her thoughts at Paisley’s laugh.

She had another story about her family’s house elves, one which involved playing tricks on her father, when she was suddenly twirled. Her eyes widened in amusement as the pair almost fell crashing to the ground - now that would be a story worth telling - but managed to catch themselves last minute. It was clear the Gryffindor wasn’t a seasoned dancer, but Sarah found her enthusiasm more than enough to make up for it. “What are you-“ Sarah cut herself off as she watched Paisley kicking off her shoes, one of them closely missing a boy who was stood leaning against the wall. Sarah hesitated for only one moment, before she also kicked off her heels. She was used to dancing in shoes like those but the prospect of dancing around the ballroom with Paisley barefoot was enough to convince her to rid them. She took slightly more caution not to hit anyone though the boy still seemed confused as to where the shoes had come from. A fit of giggles overtook the Slytherin as she watched his startled expression before being whisked back onto the dance floor.

I think you’re actually a natural,” Sarah admitted as the girls continued to spin around the floor, managing to avoid anymore almost falls. “I’ve always loved dancing barefoot. My mother and I used to dance around in the gardens for hours when I was younger,” She smiled at the memory, almost able to feel the damp grass beneath her toes.

Earl hadn’t noticed the handsome boy up till then, the entirety of his attention focused on the couples on the dance floor. He was starting to get antsy, bouncing his foot up and down, impatient to get back to twirling with beautiful people. Once he’d started moving, it felt unnatural to sit down, foggy memories of dance lessons coming back. Funny, three hours before he’d been convinced the only dances he’d done had been tik tok related.

And yet, just underneath the surface of conscious thought laid bits and pieces he couldn’t quite put together yet. Hands on his shoulders, guiding his movements, bare feet on freshly cut grass, the smell of gas invading his nose. His gray eyes had glazed over as he sank deeper in thought, smile dripping off his face like raindrops down a window. There was…. there was something there. Something he needed to remember. This would be about the right time to tell you, dear reader, what Earl looked like when he wasn’t smiling. His shoulders had curved inward, fingers turning white from being so tightly wrapped around his cup of OJ. Fancy gray suit he was wearing suddenly seemed terribly depressing, matching his pale eyes and porcelain skin, giving him a sickly appearance. The slender limbs and thin fingers, the accentuated cheekbones and too thin frame suddenly stood out against the golden light. He was still beautiful, but it had become apparent there was something…wrong. No other way to describe it really. Behind his smile and heartwarming kindness, something was lurking, whether he realized it or not.

But then a warm, pleasant voice broke him out of the trance he’d been in, and the brilliant smile fluttered back on his face, lighting his eyes and the air around him as he straightened up. “Hi!” he beamed at the newcomer, tucking a strand of pink hair behind a freckled ear. All the sense of wrong vanished all at once, melting like fog in sunlight. “Oh my GOSH you’re right!” Earl exclaimed, getting up and stretching like a cat, a small yawn escaping between his parted lips. “Look at me,” he breathed, “I spend a few minutes twirling and get sleepy. I must be terribly out of shape.”

“You’re an amazing dancer,” the boy said, making Earl blush a light pink, a little giggle leaving him. “Oh gosh thank you. Tik tok taught me well. I’m SO excited for the slow dance!!! Do you think they’re gonna play any muggle music? Gosh I sure hope so, wizarding music is BEAUTIFUL but I honestly don’t know any! Weird for a pureblood, right?” Yeah. The pink fluff talked a mile a minute, so fast it would make some folks wander about a future career in the rapping industry, if his…youtube channel didn’t work out. Shaking away the thoughts like a puppy shaking off water, Earl beamed up at the boy, admiring his clothing and gorgeous looking hair. Speaking of hair… “Oh yas! It’s natural, see?”

Closing one eye in a moment of deep concentration you weren’t going to see very often, streaks of cyan suddenly showed up in his curls. For a moment, his form had fuzzed over, as if he was a particularly glitch videogame character. And then his hair was back to shades of pink and orange, red and gold. Autumn theme all the way! “My dad HATES it,” Earl laughed, taking a sip out of his glass of OJ before swinging his feet over the side of the bench and getting up with a phantom-like grace. Truly, if it weren’t for his hair, the young boy would have looked like a black and white photograph come to life. As he was talking, a pygmy puff had poked its head from his breast pocket. It wasn’t his pet by any means. Due to a…sort of infestation in the hufflepuff dorms, a lot of pygmys had made his clothing their home. It was currently hanging out over there, purple fur staticking in all directions and making it seem like a very cuddly flower.

The Ballroom was already filled with excitement as Felicia made her way to the Autumn Ball. The room had quickly filled with jovial teenagers. The sight of so many people dancing on the ballroom floor was a bit overwhelming. Felicia immediately strutted across the floor to secure some Pumpkin juice from the refreshment tables. Hopefully, occupying herself with some mundane task would make her appear much less anxious than she was. She could hardly believe that she actually made it out to the silly dance. When she first heard about the Ball, she wasn’t impressed. In fact, she was quite annoyed at all of the “Save the Date” cards littering every nook and cranny of the castle. She even wrote home to her Aunty Grace about how annoyed she was about the whole ordeal. Her aunt was sympathetic however a few days ago she sent Felicia a neatly packaged dress and masquerade mask. The tag read “Just in case!” and was signed by Grace with a playful winky face. The young first year had no idea how much her gift would come in handy. She stood by the tables and sipped her drink while daydreaming about all the events that led up to this point.

Initially, Felicia saw the Autumn Ball as frivolous fun that was a needless distraction from her goals of becoming one of the greatest witches of her age. She adamantly declared to herself that she wouldn’t diminish her reputation by attending. However, the hype surrounding the large event was seemingly impossible to ignore. And she absolutely tried her utmost to escape the constant chattering and rumors going around about tonight. For weeks, students from Hogwarts, as well as the other three visiting school, had endless conversations about their plans for tonight. Whether it was talk about ideas for costumes and dresses, elaborate schemes to ask friends to the dance, everything about this event made Felicia deeply uncomfortable.

So, earlier today, she claimed a corner of the Hufflepuff Common Room and laid out all of her class notes and textbooks to review. Though she tried to immerse herself in homework, her eyes kept wandering towards the books on the origins of Balls and Ballroom Dances that she pulled from the library. And she couldn’t help but be enamored by the beautiful gowns and handsome suits her peers wore as they walked by her, en route to the night’s festivities. After a moment of unproductive studying, Felicia finally caved in. She packed up her books and swiftly changed into the dress her Aunt sent earlier in the week.

The dress was one of her favorites. Its material wasn’t glamorous like the glittery sequined gowns some of the other girls modeled, but it was quite comfortable. There wasn’t much time to style her hair, so she opted to just go out in her usual homely curls. To complete her outfit, she slipped on some commentary yellow wedge heels and grabbed her masquerade mask. She wouldn’t be the belle of the ball, but she loved the hodgepodge of floral prints she wore.

By the time she finished recounting her preparation process, she had finished her drink. She scanned the room to find a place to fade into the background. Most people were occupied on the dance floor so, her attention drifted less crowded parts of the room. She noticed a girl standing near the wall. Another loner like herself. Felicia put down her cup and glided across the room towards the girl who appeared to be around the same age.

“Hi there! I’m Felicia!”

She smiled and gave a small, friendly wave. “This may be my first formal dance, but this seems pretty extravagant right?” She lightly chuckled and motioned to a few couples dancing in luxurious clothing.

Well, this was certainly not how Starlee imagined this night starting out. Somehow her and Tina had gotten into a bit of a fight about their outfits. I mean... Starlee had planned to wear something that could fit in at both balls, granted she didn't have a mask, or a date for that matter, but still. There was just no way she could show her face at the costume party after that altercation with Tina. She had tried to do her makeup alone in the Slytherin bathrooms, but alas, she didn't have the knowledge of one with an older sister such as Tina, so it didn't look quite as elegant as she had hoped. Perhaps the eyeliner looked a bit lopsided... but trying to put on makeup while crying was extremely difficult. She hoped her red eyes weren't noticeable either, but there wasn't anything she could do about that. She was determined to have a good time, no matter what happened earlier.

She was also worried she would run into Elizabeth, who was sure to be at the masquerade. This was certainly more her scene than it was Tina's. Well... no matter. She would continue her regular antics of trying to avoid Elizabeth the best she could.

Starlee walked over to the table and proceeded to fill herself a glass of punch. She turned to observe others in the ballroom, trying to see if she knew anyone who wasn't livid at her. She saw the girl who won the potato sack race at the field day, although she didn't feel like the girl liked her much after her attempted attack during the game. However, Starlee couldn't help but notice that she did look stunning in her dress. She continued surveying until she caught a glimpse of Cash's purple hair. She wanted to run over and give the other a hug; Cash had the ability to make any event a fun one. But they looked preoccupied with other people, so Starlee just decided to sit down by herself at one of the tables around the edge of the ballroom with her drink. Well for now she would just enjoy people watching, perhaps once the dancing got going she would just let the music take her away.
