2020, Stage 1 Group D: Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff

Eyre had never been in an official duel before. Needless to say, he was feeling pretty nervous about it. However, he was determined to make sure that he and his girlfriend would come out on top. As he stepped onto the platform he acknowledged the two Hufflepuffs on the team with a nod; he didn't recognize the dark-haired girl, but he did know Logan from his rather humiliating sunburn incident at summer camp. Just acknowledging that memory was enough to make him turn pink, but he was not about to let it get in the way of a potential win.
Before they began, he turned to Rose and winked at her. "Good luck, darling." He mouthed with a smile before pulling his wand out from his pocket with a daring smirk.

Rose had been excited when she got into the dueling club. She had been excited when the teams were out, and excited when she was paired with Eyre. Her boyfriend. And one of her best friends. She had been excited then, and was still excited now.

The difference? Her anxiety had finally set in. A pit of dread in her stomach, making every muscle buzz with adrenaline. She was fidgeting the entire time before the duel started. She tried her best not to think about it, but she was anxious. What if she messed up in front of all the people that had gathered? What if Eyre got hurt? Again. It seemed like just as he had recovered from one injury, another one was caused, and Rose didn't want him to spend more time in the hospital wing than he already had.

Their names were called. Rose got up on the platform, following Eyre closely. Anyone who looked at her could tell she was a bundle of nerves.

She couldn't do this. Who was she? She would surely embarrass herself on front of the entire school. This would all go down quickly. Rose, the student, the little girl, couldn't do this.

"You, too." she told Eyre. A little boost of confidence.

But what if she was not Rose, the nervous student, about to do her first official duel? What if she was someone else?

She was...

"I am a famous actress," she whispered to herself. The only person that could hear her was Eyre, and if that, only barely.

Of course. This was just another scene in her act. An orchestrated dance that had been practiced millions of times over. The students watching her became her adoring fans. She knew exactly how this scene went. An aura of confidence covered her anxiety, and though the adrenaline and nervousness still remained, she was ready now. Ready to duel.

Action: Getting up on the platform, ready to duel.

Lucia Fox walked towards the duelling club, breathing heavily in and out. Oh, Merlin. No, it had not been a good idea to sign up for Hufflepuff's duelling team - and, even as she had done it, Lucia had never really thought that she might get accepted. It seemed that Briar's prediction on the train on the 1^at September had come true after all.

And Lucia Fox was definitely not nervous as she entered the room where her first ever duel would be held. Nope. Nuh-uh - Lucia would stick it through to the end.
She tried her best to ignore how damp her forehead was becoming.

As she took her place on Hufflepuff's side of the room, Lucia looked over at her duelling partner. She didn't know much about her, except that her name was Logan, she was another second-year Hufflepuff, and she wasn't one of Lucia's friends. Yet.
One of the main reasons that Lucia had signed up was for the hope of being paired with either Alina Rosier or Alexa Mackenzie, but she guessed now that in a three there was always going to be someone left out. And, right now, that someone was her. Yay.
Well, an optimistic part of Lucia thought, Maybe this Logan would become her friend soon enough. She hoped so.

"Hey," the raven-haired girl whispered to her partner, "Good luck. Don't die." The last part was almost a joke, but the next sentence was not. "Or, you know, do something that'll make you end up in the Hospital Wing."
A reason why Lucia almost hadn't signed up for the team, that was - how barbaric the sport was. Who was willing to spend their free time jinxing random people into the Hospital Wing, possibly ending up in there themselves? Lucia, Logan, and the two Gryffindors across from them, apparently.

"Good luck!" she called across to where the boy and girl stood. "I hope you don't loose too bad," Lucia added with a grin.

Round One

Scanning the faces of the four duellists, Mars felt that twist in their gut, nerves already building. They'd only met one of them before—@Eyre Reeves—but from that, they deduced that the Gryffindor girl must be @Rose Moon. Staring a bit longer, they glimpsed Eyre mouthing the word "darling" in Rose's direction. Mars nearly burst out laughing, muffling it with a fake cough. Boyfriend and girlfriend, huh? That would spice things up.

They weren't quite sure which of the Hufflepuffs were which, but from the looks of it, the brunette was @Logan Baird and the raven-haired was @Lucia Fox.

In the time it took them to make these few quick deductions, the game had already started. Spells flew from all four wands, each arcing their path towards a different person. Mars recognized the tell-tale blue of Flipendo from both Rose and Logan; Rose's zipped towards Lucia, nearly grazing her until she jumped out of the way. The Gryffindor didn't have much time to breathe before she too narrowly avoided Logan's spell. Eyre had cast his spell at Logan in turn, perhaps in retaliation for his girlfriend. If it was, he'd have to avenge her another day because Logan sidestepped out of its path.

That left one. Lucia's emerald beam hurtled itself at Eyre, who might have caught it a second too late. Even with his dodge, the spell kissed the tip of his brow and exploded into sparks. Mars blinked the brightness from their eyes, wincing slightly. If it had effected them, they were sure Eyre had gone at least partially blind. That, they were sure, certainly wouldn't help in the round to come.

His arm came up to block his face in a last-minute reflex, but it was too late. Green light scorched his pupils and he let out a yelp, his fingers rubbing at his eyelids. It didn't help much, as when he opened his eyes he had a temporary blindspot that kept him from being able to fully focus on what was in front of him.

"'M fine... I'm fine..." He sputtered out to Rose before slashing his arm through the air again, hoping that his aim wasn't too tragic.

Side-stepping, Logan sighed as a spell zipped passed her from Eyre. She wasn't surprised as she had shot a spell towards Rose in the first place. Sadly her own spell missed the Gryffindor girl, on the other hand Lucia was able to get Eyre with the green-sparks charm. Not getting discouraged, Logan prepared for her next move.

First move, gotta make it count.
Lucia raised her wand and quirked an eyebrow at her partner, but then saw the blue beam of a Knockback Jinx hurtle towards her.
Oh Merlin.
The Hufflepuff stood stock still for a second, eyes fixated on the twisting spell, then seemed to come to her senses and jumped out of the way.
Just in time, thank Merlin.

Out of the two Badgers, Logan cast her spell first, another Knockback Jinx, but the Gryffindor girl - Rose, was it? - managed to get out of the way just in time.
Ugh.
Lucia had never really thought that she'd end up annoyed because someone didn't get hurt, but she guessed that was just what happened in the world of sport. You found yourself on your own side.

The Gryffindor boy - Lucia couldn't remember his name - shot a spell at Logan, who managed to get out of the way as well.

Just Lucia left.

She raised her wand and pointed it at the boy, muttering the Green Sparks Charm in a clear voice.
Lucia would never forget the moment that her spell blasted out of her wand, and streaked towards the boy in a trail of green light. The first time she had ever cast her spell in a duel - emotions were certainly running high for the Hufflepuff.
About halfway, Lucia had resigned herself to the fact that it was going to miss. Ah well. At least none of the Gryffindors had- wait, what?
Lucia's grin could be compared to that of the Cheshire 's as her spell just caught the boy on the eyebrow, exploding in a tiny shower of green sparks.
Yes!

Hufflepuff was going to win this.
They were.
