Sorting Ceremony 2020-2021

Sadon was at the end of the line of people he looked down at the floor. As everybody walked into the great hall.It seemed like hours to Sadon of just walking before he got to see the great hall. It was only really a minute but to Sadon it was an hour of humiliation about to get worse. When the purple hair boy walked into the great hall he was amazed. But then he just stopped in the great hall entrance and looked to the side.

Sadon fell to the floor in panic. What he saw chilled him to the bone. An old man in armor that seemed to have watched al the students come in. Just watching them and waiting but waiting for what. Sadon looked around the man in armor to see if he had any weapon. It didn't look like it but wheat he saw intrigued him. The man had a hand on the table for what seemed to be support. Sadon slowly got up and looked the man in the eyes.

Sadon shivered in fear and looked at the professor standing next to the man. Sadon walked away as fast as he could before realising that some people just saw that. His face turned red as he looked at the floor and walked. Soon they all came to a halt and the man in armor who was apparently the headmaster made his speech. Then to make Sadon even more freaked out the hat started to SING! Why can't this just end. I just want to get sorted and read a book. I hate how everybody's just watching.

Sadon closed his eyes and clenched his fists. Soon enough the headmaster started calling names and for some reason this trigged a response from Sadon. Without think Sadon sat on the floor and hide his face with his knees. He was nervous and he was scared. And he just didn't like so many people being here. Every-time a name and house was called Sadon flinched. The most people in a room he's been in with has only been four people including himself.

So this was just too much for him. When the headmaster started calling people whose last name started with H Sadon started crying quietly. Nobody could really hear him over all of the noise coming from the tables. Or from the sorting hats shouting. His crying just blended right in. Eventually his name was called and he stood up. As he walked up he rubbed his eyes trying to hide the fact he was crying. He sat down on the stool as the sorting hat was placed on his head.

"You where actually crying because of your lack of social interaction." The sorting hat whispered. Sadon just barley nodded his head. The sorting hat sighed and said something something that Sadon could't make out. Sadon tried his best to pretend like nobody was there. The hat continued to look through Sadon's head in quiet. Sadon closed his eyes tightly as he felt the eyes of everybody on him. They where probrally wondering why the sorting hat was being so quiet.

"My god kid, I can't see why you like the quiet so much. But thats you I guess. You where no fun to sort." The sorting hat sighed again. "RAVENCLAW!" The hat would shout making Sadon jump. Sadon's face went red and he ran over to the Ravenclaw table and put his head on the table. Just wishing for this to end.

He was standing in the middle of the nervous crowd of first years, waiting to be sorted into the houses. The boy next to him was white as a sheet and looked as if he was going to throw up every second now. Phineas eyed him with an air of haughtiness. He was not nervous at all. Or at least, that is what he told himself. Coming from a long line of Slytherins and Ravenclaws, the young Avery heir was pretty confident, that the hat would sort him accordingly.
Soon enough the actual sorting began and after a girl called Aikens left the little stool in the middle of the hall, it was Phineas’ turn. With his head held just a tad too high, he took the few steps between him and the hat and sat down elegantly. As soon as he had sat down on the little stool, the sorting hat covered half his face and Phineas was surrounded by absolute darkness. It was now that he realised how fast his heart was actually beating. However, before he could dwell on that realisation, a voice inside the hat spoke up.

«Well well, look, who it is! An Avery», the deep, raspy voice of the hat said inside or around Phineas’ head. «Intelligent…yes, but not studious enough to be in Ravenclaw», the hat mused. Phineas of course knew the traits of all the houses and he felt slightly relieved when he heard that the hat dismissed Ravenclaw. His mother’s house was far to uptight and concerned with studying for his liking. He wanted to have fun and meet new people and go on adventures! To Phineas, it was obvious that Slytherin was the house that would benefit him the most. His father had told him much about the most prestigious house, so obviously he was going to get sorted into Slytherin, right? It seemed, that the hat had noticed his inner monologue and decided to speak up once more. «Slytherin you say, hm?», the hat grumbled. «What if I told you, that you could do far better in a different house?», it asked and Phineas wasn’t exactly sure how to answer that. «You are ambitious, that’s true», it conceded, «you want to prove yourself and be among the cool kids. You want to excel at the things you like…but, how far would you go to achieve that?» Phineas didn’t know what to say. He had never considered any other house than Ravenclaw or Slytherin, but now the hat was hinting at a different direction entirely.

«You would do great in Gryffindor, boy», the hat whispered, «you could get the recognition you so desire, but not at the cost of justice. And you are just. Maybe you did not act on it yet, but you are», the voice stated. Phineas did not have to voice his thoughts, as the hat felt the shift in his demeanour.
«GRYFFINDOR», it boomed and the table under the red banners erupted into cheers. Then the hat was lifted off Phineas’ head. A tentative smile crept onto his aristocratic features as he made his way over to the Gryffindor table. His housemates were cheering loudly and when he sat down a few of them clapped his back. He smiled politely at them and deep down he realised, that he had found his place. But boy-oh-boy would that be an awkward letter to write home.

Medea was terribly anxious. She couldn’t even remember a time she was more anxious in her whole short life. while this was totally acceptable, she didn’t expect she would be feeling that way. Her first trip on the Hogwarts Express was a dream come true. Entering the platform 9 and ¾ with all her family, looking at that amazing bright red train, getting her truck up and finding a place to sit. It was all as she had dreamed of. Inside, she found a couple of guys from her hometown. They weren’t exactly friends, but they, like her, didn’t really know anyone else, so they collectively decided to stick together for the whole trip.
She had an amazing time and was so excited she squealed in delight as the Trolley Lady arrived in the middle of the trip. She bought a couple of Chocolate Frogs and in one of them, she found a card that she hoped was a sign of good luck: Rowena Ravenclaw.
But now that train trip was over, and she had step foot into the castle. And what an incredible view that was! She sailed with her fellow first years and arrived in the castle. There, they were directed into a hidden room, where they explained how the Sorting Ceremony would take place. And there is where it hit her. That was the moment of truth.
In her 11-years-old brain, that was the most important moment of her life. For years and years, she had heard her family talked about the glory and magnificence of Ravenclaw, the best house of all. Of course, it’s not that the Darkwaters had ever talked ill of the other houses, but it was clear how it was in her mind. And then there was her dad. A Slytherin. Medea knew that because of that, her dad took a while before he was officially excepted as part of the family of his wife. So what if she wasn’t a Ravenclaw, but a Slytherin? Would her family try to reject her as well? Would they stop treating her like family? Would they distance themselves from her?
In her young mind, that was a life and death situation. She wasn’t even aware of how much she was overreacting and was so fixed on that thought that she didn’t even realize that the Sorting Had had already started to call young wizards and witches for their fatidic moment.

“MEDEA DARKWATERS”

As she heard her name, she almost jumped, surprised. Was it really already her turn? Not yet! She wasn’t ready! But she also knew she would have never been ready.
Not really knowing what to expect, she slowly walked towards the stool and sat on it. Carefully, the Hat was placed onto her head, so big that it covered her eyes completely. Inside her mind, she heard a joyful voice.
“Another Darkwaters eh? I had so many of you already… all bright witches and wizards yes, they really made Ravenclaw proud. To there is where I should put you?” the had asked. But before she could even nod, it continued. “Or maybe you are an ambitious Slytherin, just like your father! You do have many of their quality… let me think this through” and then, for what seemed to her as an infinite amount of time, but was really just a couple second, the hat sat silent.

“But of course… you’ll be a wonderful… RAVENCLAW!”

Finally declared the hat, for the benefice of the whole room. The blue and bronze table started to scream and clap, to claim their new member. Medea’s face lighted up with the brightest of smiles. She did it! She was so happy she could cry!

Adam stood outside of the large doors of the Great Hall. He tried to put a smile on his face as he knew this would be the first impression to many students for the first time; Of course he didn't want to make a joke of his last name on the first day which he takes with pride. He took a deep breath and entered.

It was just like his father said in the stories he used to read at the end of his bed. Amazing he though! Him and his peers strutted past all the tables; that is until they stopped in front of the almost ancient hat.

The headmaster rose and all the new witches and wizards gazed at him in awe. Upon a look, he appeared to be a very fascinating man. When he spoke all the conversations came to a sharp stop. Everyone listened to his wisdom and his welcomes to the first years. Adam began to feel a little bit better after the speech but he was still anxious as ever. After a few seconds which felt like years went pass but it was time to see what house him and his schoolmates would be sorted into.

Impatiently, He waited for his name to be called. It seemed like he was jealous of his fellow peers as their names got called and he had to deal with the pain of waiting and being left with his thoughts about which house he was going to get. He felt pressure as he comes from a prestigious family of Slytherins and Ravenclaws so he was hoping he would be in one of those.

Eventually, he heard the words...
"Adam Dionne!"
He went up to the stool and sat down it looked like he was the colour of a marshmallow and aslo felt like he was about to pass out. Luckily, he didn't but he still felt like he would. The only thing on his mind was what house he would get.

The hat was put onto his head and it felt lighter than expected. He began to smile and think about all the new adventures he could get into but he could not think about this for long as the hat started to talk to him.
"Interesting! A Dionne..."
Adam smiled as he liked being apart of a nameable family and it being recognised by other people. He still was nervous as ever.
"Ambitious I see... What a great place for a Slytherin or the craftiness of Ravenclaw that works well. Hmm but I see that you want to explore the outside world...."
Adam crossed his fingers hoping for one the house he expected.
"It seems like the perfect house for you is GRYFFINDOR"
The shock in Adam's face was unstoppable after he heard those words. How did he come from a family where there has never been a Gryffindor and it has ended up like this? He thought to him self maybe he was imaging it? Obviously not from the cheering of the Gryffindor table he knew he wasn't wrong. He heard correct.

He made his way to the table still with a concerned face trying not to show his emotions to his over excited housemates. He reached the table and sat down and he was greeted by a few excited first year faces.

It felt like a long time but the banquet began! Adam reached for the juiciest chicken stick he could find so that he could focus on his food and not his thoughts but if he did think he would have thought "What is this year going to be like....?!"

Arissa Wright was usually a calm person, really, she was. She was prepared for her first day of school,
and went out all her way to read books regarding Hogwarts a week before she came here-that thick book, for someone who was not that fond of history subject, that's a huge effort - she ought to get a prize for that. She might love reading, but she could be quite choosy according to her... interest. Yeah, it was bad enough that she has to ask her house elf to read it for her , as she found herself falling asleep suddenly after reading five chapters - luckily no one was at home at that time.

It’s true what they say. Nothing become real till we experienced it ourselves. Even the books can’t compare to what she sees right now. As they were ushered inside the Great Hall, Arissa found herself narrowing her eyes suspiciously at a figure wearing...armor? He was standing near the door of the Great Hall, welcoming the waves of First Year students. The figure was so eye catching that Arissa was turning her head, her gray eyes blinked rapidly till the students in front of her stopped their steps. Now that they were in front of the hall, facing the Staff's Table, her attention was once again taken by the magnificent view of The Great Hall. She couldn’t help but gasp in amazement. The ceiling-was filled with floating candles and looked just like the beautiful night sky, and it was enough to make her forget the butterflies in her stomach.

Arissa could feel the gaze of other students on them - most likely the senior students were betting who would be sorted to their house, as she could hear words being thrown around here and there. It stopped however when a sudden voice rang out in the hall, and a battered old witch hat were dancing joyously. Arissa did raised her brows on that, but Mother did say that the hat was a little enthusiastic sometimes, even her cheery father agreed with that while laughing. She could hear the professor calling the First Year's name, one by one.

“WRIGHT, ARISSA!”

It’s her name. Though she was a little nervous, Arissa flipped her wavy blonde hair and walked slowly yet confidently to the Sorting Head, her chin tilted high, and sat down while the Professor placed the hat on top of her head.

“Hmm, lets see. Well, little Miss Wright. Your father was quite a troublemaker in his days, and possess Gryffindor qualities, whereas your mother was intelligent, have a little ambition as well, but off to Ravenclaw she goes.” She could feel the hat was digging through her mind, finding, searching for her true self. “ You however, was a little different it seems. Not very brave like your father aren’t you?” The hat snickered. “Intelligent just like your mother, but more…ambitious. Quite a lot of layer there you have. Not even your parents are aware it seems. Hmmm, I see……” Arissa clenched her fist, begging, praying for it to end. As long as mother and father are proud, she’ll be fine with anything, well… probably not Gryffindor, she was far from brave. After what she felt like eternity, the Sorting Hat’s voice rang out in the hall. “SLYTHERIN!”

With a bewildered look on her face, Arissa walked to the Slytherin Table at right side of the hall, where the occupants were cheering, clapping and even whistling. She sighed inwardly. Well, lets just hope that her allowance won’t get deducted. Perhaps she should owl her parents separately, just in case. As she finally sat down, she mumbled. “Please, just not my allowance.”

"Elegant and unruffled, impassioned yet unmoved...That's what I am, and that's what I must be."

Oh, shoot.
It's hard to describe. The feeling of excitement and fear. No, fear mostly, 90% at a minimum. She really shouldn't be feeling this way. She really, really shouldn't. She stood up straighter, and made her expression more faint.
"SLYTHERIN! GRYFFINDOR! HUFFLEPUFF! RAVENCLAW!"
Those words echoed in her head. Slytherin as in Slytherin'? An abbreviation of the verb Slithering? It would make sense. Hufflepuff? Gryffindor? Those she couldn't relate animals or actions to. Ravenclaw? As in a Raven's claw? Okay, that was the second one that made, sense. The rest are probably just gibberish that sounds like a real word, though it isn't.
"Reeser, Lily!"
Oh, the joy.
She stood up straight and walked formally to the hat and sat down on the stool with the ancient piece of cloth on her head. She literally jumped,
"Wow! Lily it is right? You are surely an overthinker! This will be very hard for me! I would put you into--oh, you are a muggle-born aren't you? I won't give spoilers then..."
She sighed and rolled her eyes,
"Ambitious and smart. Oh, an observer too! Accuracy is very good, well fit for Gryffindor. You are also very, very kind. Great for Hufflepuff. Ahhh, no. You will acheive your best in....,"
She waited, impatiently,
"RAVENCLAW!"

Still tired from the trip, most of which Aideen Collingwood had spent asleep, she hid a yawn with a sleeve-covered hand. The hallways reminded her of her own home, and she might get comfortable just strolling down, looking at all the moving art works one day. Just like her father before her. However, right now it was nothing close to comfortable for Aideen. Growing up in a magical house, she wasn’t nearly as surprised by some of the sights, as she noticed from her peers. It was the amount of people, that she had the most problems with. Ending up just staring at her the floor, until the doors to the Great Hall finally opened. Even Aideen had to admit this place was impressive, with the tall ceiling and seemingly endless tables and food. Just so much food. She greeted a tall man in armor as she walked in and nodded politely, before finding a place with the others, switching between looking at everyone’s amazement and the floor.

“Aideen Collingwood!”

Her name was some of the first and she was grateful to be allowed to sit down. The only issue was that the chair was in the front of the room and everyone was looking her way. She decided to pretend they weren’t there and hurried over to the chair. Whatever the hat was mumbling, Aideen was not paying attention. All she could hear was her parents telling her stories about this amazing castle, in the middle of nowhere. It sounded almost like another fairy tale, too good to be true. She had never seen so many magical people in one place before, not even her mother’s annual reunions would get close to this. Her mother was smart and clever, a true Ravenclaw. Although she shared her mother’s passion, her personality was more like her father’s. Calm, quiet, endless patience, Hufflepuff was definitely where she belonged. Her passion for working with animals should only solidify-

“Gryffindor!”

It took a beat before Aideen registered what just happened and she felt her feet move her to the table clad in red and yellow. The clapping and patting from her new house mate felt so distance and she didn’t move, once seated. Her toes and fingers were numb, and she was too nauseous to even think about touching any of the food. She hadn’t finished her first evening at the school yet and her new life in her fantasy castle was already crumbling. The remaining time, she just sat on the bench and thought about what to tell her parents. Obviously, they would be proud of her for just being there and she could just hear her mother go on about how this was probably best for her. That she had to make her time here her own. Create stories that she could one day tell her own children. At this point, all Aideen wanted was to go back home.

He was feeling alone, even when surrounded by so many people.
Blaise walked with the herd of students towards the great hall. A vast, imposing room filled with lit candles floating around, shrouding the space with a warm, comfortable light.
This world was foreign to him.
Although the boy had witnessed magic growing up, it was very subtle, especially compared to what he had already seen on the train, where some of the kids performed cute and colorful magic. The scale of things getting even more grandiose the closer he got to the castle.
Now inside, with numerous other students, he felt very out of place.

The place was beautiful and enchanting. Blaise couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder, despite the disdain he garnered towards magic over the years.
Hogwarts is the opportunity to mend his mistrust in magic.
Being a first-year and not having much prior experience with or knowledge of magic, he knew that here, he was already at a disadvantage. He felt a creeping sense of helplessness climbing up his spine. He knew he had to go forward as hard as possible. To kick and punch and grapple his way up in this magical school, or else his head might not come up on top from even his first day, and this wasn't an option he was willing to consider.

After the last of the students entered the great hall, the doors closed shut with a resonating thud, making several first years jump in their seats.
Blaise looked back at the now-closed entrance, and when he looked back towards what he understood to be the teacher's table, he saw a figure walking towards the front of it. A bearded, scar-ridden man, who looked both wise and experienced beyond his years(although Blaise would not be able to guess his age).
The imposing figure drew out his wand, positioning its tip to his throat, and started to speak, his voice rumbling across the hall by a voice amplifying charm.
After the man, who presented himself to be the headmaster, started to talk about the sorting hat, he was cut by a voice, a voice coming FROM the hat!
Blaise could hear a few students bursting into laughter, while others just stared, enamored and stunned. He was quite shocked, his eyes open wide.

Eventually, the ceremony started, and one by one, students got sorted.
Blaise heard of the Hogwarts houses second-hand, bits and pieces from conversations his sister had with his mother.
He knew that the Linwood family had been sorted into Slytherin by the hat for generations. He didn't know what that meant, but he assumed that's what would happen to him. And just as expected, his sister got sorted almost immediately into Slytherin, giving her brother a quick condescending look as she walked towards the table decorated with her house's colors and emblem. Marina was being greeted cheerfully by several students she had previously met on the Hogwarts Express.
Blaise gave her a disgruntled look.
'That explains the verse about Slytherin. SHE would fit right in.' He thought.

As Blaise waited for his turn to go through the sorting, he thought about the line regarding Slytherin house in the hat's song:
"Those cunning folks use any means.
To achieve their ends."

'That hardly sounds like a good thing.' The boy thought to himself.
He couldn't imagine how his mother would get sorted into a house holding these values.
After what seemed like forever, the headmaster's voice echoed.
"Blaise Mallory!"
He felt his heart skipping a beat and the hairs on his arms standing. Blaise swallowed and stood up stiffly, and then started towards the stool under the headmaster's wise - yet somewhat judging- gaze.

The moment the hat touched Blaise's hair, a hoarse voice rumbled.
"ANOTHER LINWOOD!"

The volume of the voice made Blaise's shoulders stiffen as he abruptly caught his breath.
"It-... It's Mallory."Blaise mumbled.
"Ha!" The hat cackled.
"Oh yes, it's Mallory NOW, but your family goes way back... I remember you lot. All Slytherins, each one of you in every generation."
The hat stalled for a moment.
"But what about young Blaise? What am I going to do with you?"
The tall boy felt very self-aware at that moment.
'Oh, of course, something's wrong with me.' The boy couldn't hold his thoughts.

"You think something is wrong with you?!" The hat proclaimed loudly, and Blaise failed to hide his embarrassment, his eyes dropping to the floor.
"I would no doubt expect to sort you the same way as your sister and all of the other Linwoods before her, but indeed your mind presents a particular dilemma that most of your relatives didn't.
Yes, indeed, there is strong ambition within you, no doubt, and a desire to prove yourself. And yet, I find myself deliberating another option."

Blaise's senses were tingling; he started to anticipate the hat's decision. Although he was scared, a small rush of adrenaline ran through his body.
"A firm preparedness to work hard for your goals, and a curious longing to feel accepted and loved. I think I've made my decision." The hat ruled, and Blaise stopped breathing.
"Hufflepuff!"
Blaise's heart sank to his feet. He felt the old hat's weight lifting away, and yet it was as if a huge boulder just materialized on his shoulders. He couldn't help but take a look at his sister, who seemed vexed by what she had just witnessed.
The young boy gave the headmaster a quick, pleading look before quietly walking to the Hufflepuff table, looking defeated.
Without warning, as if nothing was different or wrong at all, Blaise was greeted by shouts of cheering and encouragement from the Hufflepuff students.
For the first time today, Blaise couldn't help but let a subtle smile form on the side of his mouth.

Leila nervously waited in turn. Oh, if she wasn’t in Ravenclaw, her family would be so angry! They would probably send an owl, a Howler, to her. Oh, the wait! Oh, the nervousness traveling throughout her body! She watched as a brown-haired girl walked up, then waited herself in line. Ravenclaw, please!

Leila clenched her fists and took deep breaths. She would get in Ravenclaw. She would. Of course. She had to. When her name was called, she bit her lip and sat on the stool. She was so worried, she didn’t catch anything the Sorting Hat said- the horror! Then, she heard a loud noise.

RAVENCLAW!!!

She sighed and smiled as the blue-cladded table cheered for her. ‘Well, I do look good in blue and silver,’ she thought excitedly. She wasn’t going to get a Howler after all! Then, she only just realized the beauty of the Great Hall. Candles floated so prettily, and the ceiling! Oh, the ceiling! She loved it so much, already Hogwarts. Who knew she would end up here, of all places?

Leila nearly cried as she walked towards the Ravenclaw table, smiling as her sister patted her on the back. She loved Hogwarts already, it was her home. She patted down her hair, so elated that she missed everyone else’s’ sorting. She smiled, the butterflies in her stomach going away. ‘I love this place.’

{out of roleplay: important note, Leila’s sister (mentioned in her profile) is not a character on Hogwarts.io , i.e she is an NPC or non-playing character.}

Krystal stared in awe around the massive hall. The four tables were lined with plates and silverware, ready for the food. Krystal couldn't wait to start eating, but the Sorting would take a while. There were hundreds of students. She would also be one of the last called.

The playful arguments between her parents started running through her head. Her mother was a Ravenclaw, and her father a Hufflepuff. Krystal herself tended to show traits from both her parents houses, so neither of them knew where she would be placed.

The nervous sensation in her stomach grew as she waited. She was only semi-aware of other students being called up to have the hat placed on their heads. Krystal was more focused on the house she would be placed in. What if it wasn't Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw? What if she was a Slytherin, or a Gryffindor? Would her parents be disappointed?

Krystal had always though that no one could be placed perfectly. No one could exhibit exclusively Ravenclaw traits, or only Gryffindor traits. It was impossible. Everyone was unique, made up of a different combination of all the houses. You just got placed into the one you fit best in. Like everyone, she had traits from all of them.

"White, Krystal!" the Headmaster called.

Krystal walked with shaking legs to the stool. The Sorting Hat was placed on her head. Its voice whispered in her ear.

Interesting... There's bravery and courage. But there is also wisdom and loyalty.

To her surprise, Krystal found the hats voice comforting. Instead of becoming more nervous like she thought she would, she actually calmed down. The hat continued-

Yes, yes, I think you'd be best as a...

GRYFFINDOR!!

And that was it. She walked to the Gryffindor table and sat down, her worries melting away. When it was finally time to eat, Krystal stuffed herself with the delicious food. But all she could really think of for the rest of the night was that one word.

Gryffindor.

You are no more than a speck of dust to the universe.
