Well, at least Caradoc's spell seemed to have done something not overly harmful to the Headmaster, at least. Still, after not getting an answer to his earlier question and now basically getting shushed, Zahid could not help but reflect that if he was still 20 to 30 years younger, this would be the point where he would just settle cross-legged on the floor and pull out the current one of the books he always had in a pocket, to read while he waited.
At 48 the urge was still there but he refrained and merely kept an eye out. Someone had to keep watch, it seemed. Another part of him was also still very much tempted to follow his earlier idea of retreating to call in professionals. But Caradoc had motioned for him to wait, so he would humour his friend – for now. He would give the former healer the benefit of the doubt. After all, he seemed to have known something about what ailed Solomon Lear, so maybe he had a plan? - Then again, Caradoc had been the first to recklessly run in like a headless chicken, so... Maybe that meant that Caradoc had gotten the recklessness out of his system? … No, Zahid was no where near that optimistic to believe that either. Still, he would keep watch until they either had a plan or someone else proved that they needed outside aid by running off half-cocked.

Elena watched as Marcus Iwasaki made to touch the wall in front of their group, hand outstretched... only for it to go through. There was no time to shout a warning, to reacht in any way, to move her wand and pull him in. A screech, inhuman, sound that echoed horribly when it was throwing back by the stone walls, followed. Then their Caretaker was gone.
"Cacat!"* she cursed under her breath, feeling the wolfman snarl against her collarbone. It was pacing now, spurred on by the eagle, ready to taste blood – Alexandru had always been the most hotheaded of the Văduva clan. He'd never hesitated. Elena wished he was here. Her arm throbbed.
The part of Elaine that was ready for war, that wanted to obliterate this enemy once and for all, destroy what was threatening their school, wanted to do as her husband would have and jump in right behind Marcus. Grab the man, pull him back, don't let them be split up any more than they already were – then Nora did that exact thing, cast a Protego, and ran for the invisible wall. And if that wasn't enough, Artemis Vernatis was hot on her heel, obviously with the same thought in mind.
Three were too few. They'd need more people to back them up. For an instant, there was an idea in her mind to let loose her own shadows, to sic her protectors into the unknown after the professors, to give the half-eagle the blood it was craving for... but Elaine knew better. There was no saying if she would be able to control the creatures on her skin once they had left it. That she could order them to leave her skin was more a feeling than certainty anyway, and should she succeed then what? If they were as destructive as her father-in-law had told her once upon a time, the tattoos would be nothing but another enemy waiting to tear the Hogwarts staff apart.
No, more offense would only get more of them hurt.
"We need to cover the nurse," Elena told Aleksander. In her head, he would always remain a bright little boy with no interest in her class, at least when she needed to react on instinct. She moved to stand beside Mr. Dupont, who hadn't moved at all since the phantom had been driven from the corridor by her flames.
The Muggle Studies Professor joined them, which made them a group of four close together. Better odds. She had light as well, light was good.
"Over here," she called out towards the three other Professors in the corridor (Kibitzer, Jemari, Karr) and motioned for them to close ranks. She didn't like them being so far out from the group.
With a move of her wand, Elena sent her Bluebell Flames after Nora and Professor Vernatis, in the vain hope that some more light would even their odds a little. She knew that once she could no longer see the blue fire they would flicker out soon, but this was the best she could do for them.
"Do you have a plan on what to do when we find whatever it is we are finding?" Maya Galim asked.
Elaine's dark eyes turned to the other woman. Then they moved, slowly, back to where she had scared the shade away for now, its voice now coming from their opposite site.
"We kill it."

Marcus' intent behind poking the wall was, of course, to see if it was real. When his wand began to go through the wall, confirming his suspicion, he intended to turn and inform the others. He hesitated, though, when his nose was caught off guard. The man had never smelled something so foul, and the urge to vomit suddenly overwhelmed him. He very well might have - being in such close proximity to it - if he had not been distracted by a hand suddenly grasping his wrist. He had no time at all to say anything before he was suddenly yanked through the wall. Whatever had grabbed him was unnaturally strong to pull him off his feet like that.
Marcus collapsed to the floor on the other side of the wall, now in complete darkness. The light of his colleagues on the other side apparently did not pierce the illusion. His nose felt pained from the putrid smell, but he had to continue to breathe through it. There was no other choice, because- his mouth had disappeared. His free hand instinctively went to his face. His lips were nowhere to be found, and his amber eyes widened in the darkness. Before he could fully process the fact that he no longer had a mouth, he was being dragged through the dark by his ankle. The creature that had pulled him through apparently wasn't done with him, and he hadn't even gotten a good look at it yet. He gripped his wand tighter, knowing he needed light, only to feel his stomach drop at the reminder that he had no mouth. There was no way he could cast without verbal incantations.
Fuck.
As the sounds of skittering creatures overwhelmed him, he knew that he was now victim to the darkness. What felt like blades whizzed by his arms, and as he tried to duck out of the way of some, one pierced his chest. If he could have cried out in pain, he would have, because it hurt. More blades. And then something - a creature of darkness, he imagined - bit his neck. He wanted to snarl and grab whatever it was - squeeze the life out of it - but it merely slipped through his fingers. How was he meant to fight darkness? Marcus was being dragged along the rough earth floor, unable to cast spells because of his lack of a mouth, and unable to see his opponents. Never had he been in as terrible a position as this. He felt a strong urge to fling his useless wand at the creature dragging him - but he clung to it instead, for once acknowledging that he would really need it for the battle to come.
And then there was light. He was being dragged towards light. His amber eyes were finally able to make out the hunchback figure that had been dragging him. He had to assume it was a hag. The smell and its unusual strength was enough to convince Marcus of this - but in the blink of an eye, the creature had disappeared. The injured man was left laying on the cavern floor, alone.
Still adjusting to the lack of a mouth, the man took a deep breath through his nose, wincing at the wound in his chest. It smelled foul in here - but not as bad as if the hag was still nearby, he imagined. A glance around revealed what looked like an underground cavern of glowing fungi. He got to his feet, still adjusting to the wound in his chest. His shirt had ripped and his neck hurt as well, but he was in one piece. He must've dodged a lot of those attacks from the dark, considering he had made it to the other side a lot better off than Browne. He could still walk, for one. And no broken nose. A look at the wound on his chest revealed blood - but even more curious than that was the darkness that seemed to spread from the wound into his skin. That didn't look good. He briefly wondered if the wound on his neck looked the same.
Marcus pressed one of his bandaged hands into his chest as he turned back to the darkness from where he had come.It seemed he could not do anything useful on his own right now - most prominently, he couldn't even fix the problem of not having a mouth considering his lack of nonverbal magic skills. Would they follow him? Well - he had a feeling one of them would, and maybe others might follow her. How was he supposed to warn them? He could not shout.. He just had to trust that when she came, she would have the sense to have the light of her wand to protect her. For now, he had to stay in the light of the fungi around him.
Marcus looked around at the area, deducing that this must be the hags' home. What else could it be? His research indicated that their lairs were often twisted and deformed, and this place? Well - he imagined it didn't look like this when the castle and dungeons were first made. Of course, the one thing that stood out the most was the huge black cauldron nearby. Still holding his chest, he approached it very cautiously, getting close enough to look at what was inside but prioritizing being far enough to not let the fumes or anything affect him.

Others had joined the mix and Kateri let out a breath thankful that they all weren't completely split up. At least the group back where they began could hopefully be enough together should something find its way back to them. What came next had happened so fast Kateri couldn't wrap her head around it until Marcus was gone. Marcus... was..gone? Gone. The woman's mouth opened slightly unable to make a sound. She watched silently as Nora followed suit, only able to put up a hand.
"But-" Was all she could stutter out not wanting Marcus to be left undefended but also not wanting them all to just rush forward again. Artemis followed in Nora's footsteps... quite literally as he gave a warning and passed through the wall. Elaine's voice drew Kateri's eyes away from the wall and towards the others. She gave a nod and moved closer into the group. What exactly were they all in for? Walls sucking people in... Kateri sent out a small prayer to her colleagues beyond the wall hoping they would be alright with just the three. Please...be safe.. She scanned the room, her back to the others in case anything else should lash out. Gritting her teeth she couldn't help but share the lioness' sentiment. Kill it, indeed.

To her ears alone, her footsteps would echo through the long and seemingly never-ending hall, @Maya Galim a would hold the torch a bit further from her face. The fires had been snuffed out by the staircases when the darkness first attacked, but a simple snap of her fingers had lit her torch alight easily. The others had made their way deep into the set of tunnels. So deep, Maya would begin to doubt if she had fallen to the trickery of these beings that roamed the castle. Though the path had led her straight forward and slowly showing her downwards, it would take her a while to catch up. Eventually she would see it. A light flickering, people shouting. Just as she rejoined the group, she would see others run into a wall. Both Nora and Artemis ran after someone. It would take her a few seconds to make a headcount and figure what had just happened and bring her in to witness @Elaine Pendrast's epic one-liner. "We kill it" As soon as the words had left her mouth, silence would fall upon the ice-cold walls. Their breaths would paint smoke across their faces. "Poor Papa... Come to die!" The being's shrill and high-pitched scream would sound from the group's left once more. @Kateri Karr's light would cast just enough light for her to reveal a large and slender figure at the end of the hall. A long and slender arm would point towards them. Towards Kateri, but when the beam came swirling straight for her, she managed to barely slip past it. Unfortunately for her colleague, @Rosalind Kibitzer would be caught by surprise behind her. The spell would hit the floor underneath her and rapidly start to break from under her feet. Whoever was standing next to her, would see her dot of white hair tumble into the darkness below.
After Maya's request and back at the start of the tunnel, @Ivar Eide's eyes would scan the bones and flick towards the darkness ahead. He could just see Galim's cloak disappear in the shadows, though her torchlight would be noticeable for just a bit further. His ears would pick up the clatter of armour up above. The old man was being escorted away by what seemed to be the Herbology professor. Only his Head of House and the older man he would recognise as @Zahid al-Benghazi ibn Masoud would remain upstairs. Ivar would notice the younger of the two men saying something to the other, but could not make out what exactly. All he noticed was a cat staring right down at him behind their back. Two twinkling eyes staying fixated on his figure without a sound escaping its small body. Though he could swear he saw something flicker in its gaze.
Silence would be broken as Doc faced his friend. "Zahid, I need you to come with me and study the runes up ahead." Caradoc drew breath as his eyes lingered on the figures of Solomon and Boniface leaving up the stairs. "We need to document it as fast as we can and then rejoin the rest of the group." He explained carefully. Behind his Head of House's shoulders, the historian would notice the same cat that had fled earlier come back down and take halt behind Caradoc. If he tilted his head, he would notice she had only eyes for the two men down the stairs. How curious. "It's just a bit further down the hall. I'm hoping most of the danger has gone off with the main bulk of our staff." Caradoc continued as he started descending the stone steps again. Only taking halt as he reached Ivar and Gargott's location. Giving them both a nod to see if they were good to go, he'd open his mouth once more. "We stick together and cover each other's backs. Lights up and keep your eyes and ears wide open. We need to get Zahid o-" His eyes wandered around Ivar for a second as he realised his origin and lit his wand as if an idea popped to mind. "Zahid and Ivar perhaps, to check out those runes we saw before. After extracting that information, we make our way to support the others. All clear?" He'd place his hand on a partially complete set of armour leaning against the wall. Looking along the stone tiles, he would see the row of suits seemingly being tossed down here for their last display. "Perhaps we ought to wear these" He joked as a soft smirk grew on his face, only for it to disappear as he noticed the cat staring at the top of the stairs.
Thrusting forward, @Hjørdis Jensen would break through the wall effortlessly. Her shield clashing instantly whilst the darkness would lash out against the silver barrier. Rapid to follow, @Artemis Vernatis's bubble would meet hers and stand beside. Thousands of skittering sounds would be heard as the darkness consumed them until... Bright blue flames came hovering through the wall behind them. The shadows were cast back, almost making the figure of a man stumbling back in fear. It would reveal a smaller tunnel dug into the earth behind the stone leading them downwards with no end in sight. All manners of insects could be seen crawling around through it, this time they did not seem to be made of shadows though.
Yelling not an option and just a bit more down, Marcus would find himself alone. At least to any outsider it would seem so. He, however, could smell her, hear her heavy breath grunting in the back, the Wolfman knew exactly where she was in the cavern. As he slowly approached the boiling cauldron, his eyes would pick up far more things along the way. Bundles upon bundles of clothes would be scattered across the entire cave. Small shoes, socks, shirts and so on all thrown on pile after pile. A large heap seemingly making smaller hills in the sharp stony features of the underground campsite. Roots seemed to be dangling from the earth above him, slowly twitching in the breeze that managed to seep through the multitude of stalagmites and stalactites. As his gaze fell upon the boiling liquid, he could immediately smell it. Flesh, there was flesh in there. And not the kind you would enjoy with an evening meal. The bones still shedding their meaty coats before his eyes, he would suddenly notice it. The absence of branches crackling under wet feet, or small pebbles being ground underneath the weight of a body trying to move silently away from him. He would turn just in time to see her leap from an elevated bundle of rocks coming right at him. Their arms would lock and his back would be pushed against the cauldron. He could feel the heat building up against his back, as well as the hag's face, now clear as day, pushing closer towards his. A wicked thin grin growing from ear to ear, showing only a few remaining pointy teeth. Her skin shifting green to blue somewhere mid-body and her features wrinkled and old. Though her strength would be obvious. With a hellish laugh, the old crone would continue to try and push the muted man into the boiling pot. "Delicious" She'd whisper as saliva dripped off her tongue.

For a moment after Elaine had spoken there was nothing but silence… then the cold really came in, her breath painting white clouds into the suddenly ice cold air. It was always cool in the dungeons, especially in winter, but this was no natural occurrence, no, it was deliberate. A freezing, pitch black underground corridor altered by a being that hated fire and light, warmth and brightness, that had blown out their light at very chance it got, had recoiled from her blue blames and the Lumos charms they’d used.
A voice shrieked from farther down, another inhuman sound. Was the thing angry? Had Elaine’s words taunted it, did it feel challenged, intimidated, to go on the offense like that when before it had tried to lure them in with a faked innocence and sounds made to draw on their emotions?
Something moved in the darkness, and without warning a patch of black shot out from the end of the corridor. Elena could barely follow it with her eyes, relieved when she saw the Astronomy Professor dodge the attack by a hair’s breadth – only for it to hit Rosalind Kibitzer instead, the Divination Professor too far off from their group for any of them to be fast enough to reach her as she literally fell through the floor that crumbled away beneath her feet.
Her head shot back towards the where the dark figure had been hiding from them.
It was taking them out one by one, the strangler, the inattentive ones, the curious ones, those who couldn’t but follow their heart and jump after a friend in need. It would win. Their enemy had the advantage, and they were using it thin out the group of attackers.
There was a spell on her tongue. Fire was what it feared, light and heat, and Elena knew exactly what she needed to do to kill it, what to cast to have the phantom at the end of the corridor devoured until there was nothing left of it anymore – if she’d been alone, maybe she would have cast in a moment of rage, her emotions getting the better of her for only a second, but she wasn’t alone, and that was the whole point.
Alexandru, the silver sword through his chest, the satisfied curl of Valeriu Drăghici’s lips.
What she lacked was control. If things went as she feared, her daughter would be down one mother in less than a month’s time. It would be cruel of her to get herself killed, even more so to take her colleagues down with her in a fit of arrogant pride. Elena was a vain witch, but she knew her failings. One image of Alexandru with a curse on her mind and her control would break like a damn beneath a giant flood wave.
Another way, then.
“Jemari, over here!” she called for the Flying Professor that she could barely see in the flickering shadows.
He needed to move or he’d be another casualty. Like Rosalind. Going after her would mean losing more people. Cut. Elena marked her as lost in her head, same as she pushed the Groundskeeper, Professor Vernatis and Nora from her mind one after another with crystal clear deliberation. Cut. Cut. Cut. Trying to go after them was pointless. It would only split the group further.
You can’t safe them all! Her words thrown at Alexandru’s head, now reflected right back at her.
“Professor Galim, I would need that second torch you carry,” she addressed the Muggle Studies Professor, her dark eyes unreadable in the flickering light, her voice without inflection, her face expressionless. Hand outstretched, she thanked the other witch with a nod when she put the rough wood of her second torch to her skin.
For a moment her eyes met those of Aleksander, such a talented young man, all grown up, another person she was about to let down, that she would watch the darkness take from her if she couldn’t figure out a way to hold him close, to fend off the phantom that was tearing them apart. She nodded at him too, and he nodded back. Such faith.
“We need sharper teeth,” she told the group, her breath creating a foggy mist with every exhale. Another white puff of air, and one more, vanishing almost as fast as they had come. “Cover me for a moment, please. I have an idea.”
She had done this once before, but under the watchful eyes of a master who had guided her through the whole process. Now all Elena had was a torch, a wand and her own mind. Another memory to be pushed away, forgotten by the time she drew her next breath. Cut. White fog in the torchlight.
With every inhale and exhale she pushed another memory back, cleared her mind from the emotions that were holding her back, distracting her, pulling her mind in directions she didn’t want it to go.
What they needed was fire. Light. A warm, gentle, soft flicker of a flame that could withstand any enemy, that was strong enough to defy time itself, to push the shadows apart, to burn the creature that was hunting them in their own home. She knew how it looked, how it moved, how it reflected in the eyes of those who watched it in awet.
One last breath and her consciousness was empty but for one task.
The half-eagle screeched, but it was a scarcely audible, nothing more than the echo of a sound long gone, another memory that she had split herself from.
With the makeshift torch in one hand and her cherry wand in the other, Elaine began to cast a spell.

Perhaps it was just her, but the hallways felt never-ending. It was pure blackness in front of her and catching up to both Elaine Pendrast and Aleksander Ostrowski seemed unlikely. As Maya ventured forward, her footsteps echoing with every step she took, she began to wonder if she was going the right way. What if she was heading towards danger. Staircases moved-- couldn't hallways? Who knew how the Hags played their game.
Luckily, with her handmade torch leading the way, she was able to prevent herself from bumping into the walls. Unfortunately, she was still unable to really see anything in front of her. Her heart beating fast, she finally caught up with Aleksander and Elaine.
Maya took a deep breath and she began to see her breath when exhaling. Was it getting cold? But how? The dungeons were dark, moist and dank. There were no open windows to bring in the cold air. How could it be possible? While visually alert, Maya was stuck in thought. A deep shrill sound to her left had made her mind come back to reality. They definitely were not alone.
Maya noticed Elaine on full alert. She looked around and Maya could guess that she saw something with the way she called for Jemari, the Flying Professor, and asked for Maya's torch. Maya opened her cloak and grabbed the torch that was in her inside pocket. She handed the handmade torch of bones and the hem of her cloak to the Gryffindor Head of House quietly. She did not question the woman's motives. While Maya did not trust other colleagues, she did have a sense of trust for Pendrast.
From the looks of Elaine, she was casting a spell. But it wasn't a simple one at all. It seemed like one that will need a lot of time. Maya, holding her torch tightly with one hand and her wand in a stabbing position in the other, she covered for Elaine. She looked around to see if there was anything moving. For the way Elaine had quickly acted, there had to be something that was close. Maya kept her eyes alert while Elaine began her spell.

Marcus was pulled through the wall, and River panicked. It wasn't the kind of panic that made you do something crazy. It was the kind of panic that made you stop, heart hammering in your chest, unable to do anything at all. And so thats exactly what happened. He did nothing. The professor of flying just hovered there, staring at the spot that Marcus had stood on just moments ago, his brain screaming at his body to move but failing to actually get it to obey. By some miracle, he wasn't devoured by the darkness. By some miracle, he was left unharmed.
Elaine's voice snapped him out of his trance. The woman had called him over, and he would be an idiot not to comply. River pulled back on his broom, turning direction with graceful expertise, and bolted towards the head of Gryffindor. Once the flying professor stopped at her side, he listened to her request and nodded. Then he raised his raised his wand and yelled an incantation out towards the dark as loud as he could: "PROTEGO TOTALUM!" There was really no way for him to know whether the darkness could be stopped by such a spell, but if it could, that was another weapon added into the group's arsenal.

"Maybe, I did something wrong? Did I think of the correct incantation? Was it Verdimillious or was it Verdimollius?" The left index finger started to scratch the bald spot on Gargott's head as the small rotund man was lost in thought. The part-goblin couldn't figure out what had gone wrong or why nothing had been revealed to him.
He had been so sure of himself that something was there. That it had been in his grasp and yet... It had somehow slipped through his fingers. "Caretaker! What do y-" As Gargott turned to face, where only mere moments ago, the Caretaker had stood he was met by only the dark. "Well... Where did that lad run off to?!" The Keeper of Grounds and Keys wondered aloud, but before he could ask any more questions he was joined by three other men. Caradoc Browne a friend from his youth, the Professor of History of Magic, and the Professor of Care of Magical Creatures.
Caradoc hadn't wasted any time and immediately voiced his plan. Gargott was eager to join this group on their mission towards the rune as he was looking for it as well. Sausage fingers made a snapping sound. "Well then lads, let's not waste any more time then hmmm? Caradoc, if you'd be so kind as to show us the way?" Gargott threw Bernice on his right shoulder and was ready to go with them.

Banishment

The familiar skittering sounds filled her with dread and anticipation. The darkness almost took over. A sigh of relief escaped her lips as blue brights burst through the scene. Someone had followed? It took her a moment to register what was happening. Right. She had made it through the wall in one piece it would seem. She did not know exactly how but it worked. Right now, that was enough.
Her eyes looked more blueish than silver as they reflected the light from the bright blue flames. Her sight adjusted to the new light quickly, observing the room. The shadows were getting cast back, almost as though it was the shape of a man. Marcus was not there. He was not in the new room. Damn it. This would not be as quick as she would have liked.
The room only had four beings or creatures. Herself, Artemis, the shadows and all sorts of insects it would seem. No one else had followed. There was around seven, in her mind, with the Runes Group - Cursed Caradoc, Zahid, Dunaid, Galim, Eide, Mad King Solomon and the Professor of Runes. Most of those were not fighters - or were too injured to fight. She was glad Galim was there. The Muggles Studies Professor and her might have had a rocky relationship but Hjørdis acknowledged her experience in the army. It would likely come in well for that group, in particular. That meant those in the dungeon was her Tante, the desperate Nurse, Karr, Ostrowski, Rosa, Jemari... Six. The groups were mostly even. They would be fine.
Marcus was the only one in real trouble still. Alone. They had to get to him. Even if it was just the two of them. Two was not enough, by any means. But... honestly, she would do this alone if no one else had followed - because there was no way she was going to leave her best friend to face the dangers by himself. Having Vernatis next to her made her feel instantly better. Two was definitely better than one.
She did not say anything. Mostly because it was evident that they were in the Hag's Lair now. This was no longer the Dungeons of Hogwarts. Perhaps it had stopped being their dungeons many months ago. Who knew? But the fake walls were very telling. They were being toyed with. The hags knew exactly where they were this whole time, did they not? They had to. It was not like the professors were quiet, by any means and judging by the scenery around her, she had a strong suspicion that they controlled the environment here too. This was their maze.
Her wand gripped around her wand. Her eyes scanned the new room in front of her, quickly trying to come up with a plan. There was a small tunnel not too far away. It was... endless. Right. It could have been fake. But there was little choice than to trust the very dark tunnel. The hordes of insects made her shudder a little. She knew that she was really not going to enjoy what was going to come next. Anyone who knew her knew that she would hate this. But it did not matter. She had to find him. That was all that mattered. If the roles were reversed, this would have been easier. He could have found her by now, couldn't he? Was he okay?
There was little time to think about anything. It had been a few seconds since they burst through the walls - whatever was in there, likely knew they were coming. If it knew when Marcus had touched it, it might know they were here... Plan A - no. She needed three people. Shoot. Plan B - it would work but it was not going to be smart. Foolish, for sure but it would work. Plan C? It... might work? Ah, there was no time.
The bright blue flames would fade soon. She motioned quickly to the flames, as though to indicate that Vernatis should create some more light if he could. Because she had another plan forming. As quickly as she could, she muttered some incantations under her breathe as she attempted to cast the disillusionment charm over them. She had absolutely no idea if it would work. It could have been pointless. The hags might know exactly where each of them was anyway. But... if there was a chance that they could catch his attacker by surprise or throw them off for a second, it was worth it. If it made them harder to see, it was worth it. That was her logic. It was simple but it would do.
With that, she swallowed. There was little time to stay back and honestly, she just wanted to get the hell out of this place as quickly as possible now. She needed a shower. Or five. As quietly as she could, she went to go into the tunnel, unless Vernatis had any major objections with that plan.
