Broken Bones & Friendships
Eris hadn't moved from her chair in the hospital wing for a whole day. The nurses had come to accept her as a part of the hospital wing, as the little-red head hadn't' moved for the whole day, after her conversation with Adam. The nurses looked at her, with displeasure shown on their faces, but said nothing. Or maybe the did say something. Eris wouldn't of noticed. Dinner came and went, as the patients ate, but Eris just sat there. She seemed to be waiting for something, sitting between two boys and their beds. Her leg was shaking, but other than that, she wasn't expressing any emotion.
She alternated between looking at a taller blonde boy with bandages on his head, and a little black-haired boy with blood staining his sheets, every few minutes or so. At first, she had looked angry, than scared, than mad. Now she just looked vacant. She didn't even know why she was sitting there anymore. When Adam had woken up earlier, while Michelle and some other people had crowded around his bed, he had been cold and rude to Eris. And Kaegen hadn't even been awake when he had been taken into the hospital wing by an evil looking house-elf.
One of the reasons the little-red head was just sitting in a chair, next to two sleeping people she used to consider best friends, was because she had nowhere else and nobody else to turn too. Adam was Eris's closest friend in the whole castle, and someone she had spent the holidays with in the lovely wizarding town in Nottingham. And then there was Kaegen. The crazy boy who had thrown an acid salamander at her, than thanked her for being alive by giving her a knife and a frog-monkey named Ikhi. They were Eris's first friends in her young life and after one day, she was going to lose them.
Sighing, Eris glared at an errant nurse who had came to tell her it was time to go away. The Gryffindor prefect knew she already was going to have detention for the rest of the school year after punching Eri, but still she refused to leave Adam and Kaegen. Shaking her head no at the nurse, Eris crossed her arms, and sunk down lower in her seat. "I'm not leaving." She said stubbornly, and the nurse drew back, not wanting to deal with the anger of an emotional unbalanced eleven year old.

Broken Bones & Friendships
Kaegen was trying to get his thoughts in order, it wasn't working. He had been a part of something, if only for a week or so. It had always been him and grandfather. Mother and Father weren't home most of the time, and they didn't go outside with him even when they were. Kaegen had found something to believe in, and had risked his life to stand up for it. What he believed in, was his friends. What had happened? He had gotten hurt, he had decided to go and stop what had hurt him from hurting anyone else. And then whatsisface had attacked him. Thingamajig had talked to him on the train, told Kaegen his name. He had been a part of Kaegen's house.
Kaegen had retaliated, used his slingshot to hit tallkid in the face, but then he got punched. It didn't make much sense. Thingy attacked first, Kaegen retaliated and then Thingy attacked again. The only things that did that were the wildest of beasts. But after Kaegen risked his life, after he went against his very nature to protect these people, after he was attacked by that one kid, he was somehow still in the wrong. He was somehow the cause of this.
He felt a empty hole were his heart should have been. The feeling was horrible, and he didn't like it. He didn't even know why he was feeling this. Why did things happen this way?
Kaegen softly cracked an eyelid. Eris was sitting there, waiting for him to move, waiting until she could see the whites of his eyes before she ripped out his throat and laughed.
If two people he knew did it, she would probably follow.

Adam was caught in a fever dream. He stood at the end of a hallway, a corridor that seemed to stretch on forever yet simultaneously ended in darkness at both ends. Adam felt a cold breeze blowing by him from nowhere, and he wasn't aware of anything else but the silence. It felt almost like he was frozen in time. After a moment of eerie stillness, Adam heard a noise behind him and turned.
Barely twenty feet away stood Eris. At least, she had been Eris. This twisted copy of Adam's friend had pale skin, hollow cheeks, and hair hanging limply down around her head. She looked like she had been through hell and back, and Adam felt the sudden need to reach out to her. He extended his hand, but couldn't move. Dream-Eris held out her hand in return, palm facing Adam. She looked sad, ragged, desperate. Adam was about to call out to her when things took a turn for the worse.
Another shadowy figure appeared suddenly behind Dream-Eris. It was almost like it had always been there, but Adam was certain that it hadn't. He tried to get a closer look at the new figure, and he recoiled in shock when he recognized it; a torn, dark version of Kaegen. Adam blinked twice and watched in horror as Dream-Kaegen plunged a black knife into Dream-Eris's stomach. Adam broke into a cold sweat and tried to scream. He couldn't. A steady voice flowed into the dreamscape above: "I'm not leaving."
Adam woke in a panic, grabbing the sides of the bed and resisting the urge to bolt. It took him a minute to register the other two people still in the dim lights of the hospital wing. Kaegen and Eris, exactly where they had been when he had fallen asleep. He discreetly tried to turn away, hoping that neither would notice that he had returned to the world of the waking. But it was too late.

Adam startled awake, and Kaegen felt fear. Fear of the unknown.
Why had that boy attacked him? No matter how he looked at it, he didn't understand. He had to kill the unknown, run from the unknown, hide from it. But it knew where he was, it could see him. Kaegen's eyes screamed terror, pure, untarnished fear of what the boy did not understand. Kaegen tried to run, but only managed to lurch painfully out of his bed and on to the floor. Staggering to his feet, his eyes widening as he realized just how weak he had become. Just how much blood he lost. His hand fumbled where his shining knife used to be, but found nothing. He reached for where his scarf was, but he felt only a bandage a nurse had put on, his scarf having been placed to the side of his bed. Kaegen fumbled for the only things that understood him, his eyes growing more and more panicked, until he found the straps that once held vortigern's bottle. The belt that held pendragon's box. The bag that held merlin.
They were all gone. All of them.
He didn't know what to do any more. The panic faded from his eyes, and he just sat. His bright, active eyes resigning themselves to blankly staring, tears started to flow, as he sat there on the floor, until his eyes dully, lifelessly chose something to stare at. A single object, that he remembered. It was the handle of a knife he once gave to someone.
Why did he give it to someone?
He decided that he probably didn't care.

Broken Bones & Friendships
Eris recoiled, as she watched Adam wake up. Pure panic flashed in her eyes, as she jumped off her seat. Finally, she regained her posture, and stared at Adam with wide, almost scared eyes. What if he was still mad at her? How bad was their friendship going to be damaged? For a moment, Eris wished she was the one lying in the hospital bed, instead of Adam. It was her fault anyways. She should of been there to defend Kaegen, and get him straight to the hospital wing, before he had gone crazy. Looking at the other bed, to Kaegen, who still seemed asleep, Eris tried to regroup her thoughts. Everything was a blur. Adam. Mad, sad, worried, friendship ruined? Kaegen. Mad, Furious, worried, dangerous, friendship ruined? All her coherent thoughts ended with the same words. Friendship over. This wonderful new thing that gave Eris such joy was going to be gone. Sitting back down on her seat, Eris stared at Adam like a deer caught in headlights.
"Adam?" Eris asked quietly, leg starting to shake even faster than before. The nurse from before was gone, leaving the two children alone. "I, er, brought you a chocolate frog and a card." Maybe he hadn't seen it when she had brought it hours ago. Rubbing at her eyes, Eris sighed.
She looked almost as much of a wreak as she had in the fever dream. Eyes red, and face puffy from crying. She hadn't felt this miserable since she had been kicked out by her mother. Eris had finally found the place she belonged in, and the people she cared about, only to have them ripped away from her by each other. The irony wasn't lost on the young girl that her two best friends were fighting, and that she was going to have to pick a side at some point. In Eris's 11 year old mind, she knew that this was the end of the world. She could either try and fix her friend's relationships, or pick a side.
Either way, things could go terribly wrong. Chancing a glance at Kaegen, Eris saw he was awake. She opened her mouth to say something, but stopped at the look in his eyes. Any semblance of humanity had leaked from the boy's eyes. He looked like a cornered lion. And cornered lions could bite and thrash. Eris's lips started to quiver, as she desperately stared at Kaegen's face, searching for any scrap of emotion that reminded her of her friend. "Keagen..?" She managed to choke out, staring at Kaegen with raw pain on her face. This was more than the eleven year old Eris could take, as she burst into fresh tears, making her already red and puffy face even more red.
She looked away from both boys, and down at her feet and leg, still shaking in the plastic folding chair. How had this happened in the first place? It wasn't fair. Why couldn't life just be fair and good for once, instead of throwing a cosmic curve ball at Eris any time she was happy? Resisting the urge to start screaming, Eris's leg started shaking even faster.

That knife. He had given that person a knife for a reason, hadn't he? Why would be give a knife to whoever that was? There had to be a reason, right? There had to be one.
But try as he might, his brain would not allow him to remember. He could only blankly stare at the handle, and try to recall what had led to him giving the knife to that form that had it. Who was that? He didn't really care, it didn't matter.
Kaegen knew there was a door, he knew he could use the door to escape, but he didn't have the strength. The shape was crying now. Why was it crying? Was it even crying? What if the shape was laughing at him, coming in to kill him. Even possible death didn't make the young boy blink. If he died now, he wouldn't really care. Grandfather would be mad at him, but that was okay, he could deal with Grandfather being mad. Or could he? He was Kaegen Deathmote, he could remember at least that much, and that was enough. He knew what he was here for and he was going to get what he wanted. He was going to get knowledge, spells, skills. He was going to survive. He had been soft before, he would recover from this. He would recover and he would learn.
A emotion decided to creep in to the corners of Kaegen's eyes. He had felt this emotion very, very few times throughout his life. Not when that girl had sliced him, not when his pet burned him. Not even when that one shape attacked him for no reason. But now, now he truly realized how stupid he had been, how pathetic he was.
The rage played at the edges of his dulled vision, danced around like sparks waiting to burst into a mighty fire. But they never ignited. He didn't have the energy for that.
He looked over at the shape, and tried to recall it's name. It had a name, didn't it? It must.
Kaegen's eyes dulled again, blankly staring as he mumbled.
"Hello knife. What are you doing here?"

Broken Bones & Friendships
Adam looked at the two of them in confusion. Hadn't he just seen......and Eris was......what was going on? He vaguely remembered yelling at Eris this afternoon, when everyone else had been around his bed, too. What had he been yelling about? It was.....it was......right. The corridor chase. How could he forget? It was all that everyone he had talked to had wanted to discuss in the last day. It had been the subject of his dreams. Now, just now, he saw how stupid the whole thing had been. It wasn't Eris' fault; none of it was. He lay there and he thought over all of this, seemingly paralyzed, eyes wide open. In fact, Adam found that he was too nervous to do anything until Kaegen quietly got out a short sentence:
"Hello knife. What are you doing here?"
Adam's heart skipped a beat and his breath caught. This was going to go down just like in his dream. He knew it. Kaegen still hadn't calmed down, and now he was going to stab Eris just like he had planned to do to Eri. A small part of Adam yelled at him from inside: No, you idiot, you're both delirious! Go back to sleep! At the moment, however, Adam was too afraid to listen to his logical side, and knew he had to take immediate action.
Twisting around and forcing him into an upright position, Adam cried, "No!" and grabbed Eris' wrist. He pulled her forward, out of the chair and closer to him, but most importantly, further from Kaegen. "He's not safe."
It only took a moment for the dream's effects to lose their hold on Adam. It was ironic, really, that it was this exact instant in time that he came back to his senses. He was sure that he was still concussed; these things didn't go away that quickly, even with wizard medicine. But his mind was just a little clearer now, really clearer, not delusion-clearer. So he dropped Eris' arm, looked away sheepishly, and apologized quietly. "I thought......sorry."
Good lord, what was happening to them?

Broken Bones & Friendships
He remembered a promise, a promise he made to himself, much too long ago. But a promise Kaegen made was a promise Kaegen kept. He had made a sheath for that extra knife himself, he had planned on giving it to the first person he could actually call friend. His mind was not working, he didn't even remember the name of the person who had the knife. But they had it. That was as good as a magical contract to the young boy, who unexpectedly stood up, eyes still blankly staring forward.
The unknown had just grabbed the holder of his knife. Kaegen had some dim understanding that he didn't want to know who was holding the knife, that he could see the person clearly, he just didn't want to. But that had to stop. The embodiment of fear had grabbed the shape holding his knife, and Kaegen was going to do something about it or die trying.
As soon as he took that one step forward, a spark of recognition flashed in front of his eyes. He did know the bearer of knife, who was she?
Kaegen took another step forward, desperation to fulfill a promise driving him forward. If whoever that was was truly a friend to him, he would save her, pull her back from the unknown.
His memory slowly leaked back, Kaegen was feeling weaker with each step, moving slowly towards a goal. If someone bore the knife of Kaegen Deathmote, they would have two hands pulling them out of wherever they came from. Even out of the arms of the unknown itself.
But then he looked closer at her face. A short, redhead girl that looked like she had crossed the fens by herself. And the unknown had just jerked her out of her chair.
Kaegen looked at the unknown, realized just how pathetic it was. Kaegen swayed back and forth, trying to stand up.
He tried to say this, let the unknown what exactly it was, but a bit of bloody drool came out of his mouth instead. Kaegen was relatively fine. He just needed to rebuild his blood supply. He was deathly pale and clammy, looking more like a corpse than the young boy who had stood up for his table only a day ago. Or was it two days
But the words of his younger self kept coming back to him. 'I'll give this knife to the first person I can call friend'
Even if the girl wasn't waiting for him to get better, even if the girl was waiting for that other shape, the unknown, and Kaegen had just happened to be in the same hospital room, it didn't matter.
Someone who he had once called friend, for a reason Kaegen could not remember, was sad and alone, and Kaegen had almost no strength left to do anything. But the human body will do incredible things when forced, superhuman things. Lifting things that in his state he shouldn't be able to easily lift and then walking with them.
Going back a few steps, Kaegen picked up the glass of water his nurses had left out for him, and the smallest blanket he could find. And then came the treck back to that girl he couldn't even remember the name of. Making it reasonably close to her, but not within arms reach, Kaegen did three more things. He put the water and the blanket where she would have to reach to get them, not right next to her, so that she wouldn't get scared. It worked this way with creatures, it probably worked with humans. Kaegen sat down, and leaned as hard as he could against the unknown's bed, which rolled away a bit, enough to put whoever that girl is outside of the unknown's reach. Then Kaegen laid down. His energy expended several times over. He was out of breath and for the first time in years, he was panting.

Broken Bones & Friendships
"Hello knife, what are you doing here?"
Eris stared at Kaegen, hand finding the hilt of the knife he had given her ages before. She held the hilt of the knife, inside her robes, and stared at Kaegen with a confused expression. Surely he remembered her name? She wasn't just a knife to him? At least he was well enough to talk. Eris didn't have the energy to smile at Kaegen, so she simply stared at him.
Eris turned away from Kaegen, visable shock on her face as Adam grabbed her wrist. "He's not safe." Kaegen wasn't safe? He had hurt so many people, but he wouldn't hit Eris, would he? But he had hurt Adam, and she had thought they were friends. When Adam said sorry, and released her arm, Eris stared at him. "It's okay. Uh, thank you for protecting me?" She said, trying to make the words sound less awkward. It was nice that Adam was doing something for her. That he was still trying to protect her. Eris had thought he hated her, so it was an improvement that he was protecting her. Even if she didn't need protecting. Kaegen wasn't going to hurt her, right?
Chancing a look at Kaegen, Eris let out a little gasp to find him not in his bed. Kaegen than handed her a blanket and a water, than pushed Adam's bed away from Eris. Eris's foot stopped shaking, as she stared at her friend in horror. He collapsed to his bed, panting. Horrified, Eris looked at Adam with a face drained of color. Adam didn't want her to go help Kaegen, but she had too. "Nurse!" Eris yelled into the sudden silence.
"Kaegen Deathmote needs your help." She said in a quieter tone, as the angry nurse from before rushed over.
"It's okay. Uh, thank you for protecting me?" Broken Bones & Friendships
The nurse cast some sort of spell, Kaegen wasn't sick, exactly. Just bloodless.
He blinked after the spell was cast, but lay still until the nurse left again. He had come to a realization.
1. He knew that girl. She was eris, and was his friend
2. He knew that boy, he was thinggumy, wait that wasn't right...
He remembered what had happened, and tried to sort out who he was actually mad at. He decided no one, really. The death witch would kill someone, they would see Kaegen had been right, that didn't bother him.
Eris had left him to go bleed out, but he hadn't wanted her to follow. Honestly, she had done what he would have wanted her to.
whatsisface had attacked him, but right now, Kaegen was already over the punch thingamajig had given him, and the boy was in bed sick because Kaegen had given him both a nasty bruise and a concussion.
There was honestly no one to be mad at, and yet he felt somehow betrayed. Everything that had happened was never supposed to happen. The takeaway lesson, was to never let his guard down. Ever. If his guard had been up, he would have been able to dodge that girl's spell and whatsisface's attack.
But that was alright, he would never make that mistake again.
He had paid for it with the loss of all his creatures. Although he did spot his scarf, which was on top of both his knife and his slingshot. So at least he had those. He wasn't sure why that other boy was so upset, come to think of it.
he got a concussion and a bruise, was immediately brought here, and then was taken care of by at least half of the student body. How was it possible for him to be that stupid? Kaegen was going to tell him how lucky he was, but then stopped. He was probably missing something. There must be a reason. He had no Idea what was going on, but was going to find out, one way or another.
Turning to look at eris, Kaegen's pathetic voice carried across the room.
"Are you my friend?"
He would decide what to do after she answered.
