The Headmaster had been easy enough to tip over, only skin and bones, weighed nearly nothing. As the bearded old man fell to the side someone jumped underneath him to catch his fall. Ivar looked upon the hero unamused. "Have you lost it? I-". For the first time this evening Ivar didn’t smile, but a glint of rage came over him instead “HE! He’s the one that's lost it!” Spitting on the floor in front of the two men Ivar walked past them.

Ivar decided to stand with those that still hadn't run after the fool with a death wish. He was done with the headmaster, and that hero of his too, not like the hero seemed too interested in helping when it was Ivar in a bind, but he sure came running when Solomon was about to land on the floor. Oh no, what if his robe got dirty, poor old sickly man.

Quite a few of them had rushed ahead. Ivar clucked his tongue, he had seen a few fools do the same when exploring dragon dens, it never went well with them. He glanced over the ones remaining, ignoring the hero and the fool behind him, so these were the ones with some sort of self preservation? Or was it the cowards? Probably a mix of both.

"EIDE!". One of the ladies not far away from him shouted, rather louder than she would have needed in Ivars opinion. "Would you be able to decipher if these bones are human or creature? And if creature, what species they may be?" Ivar smiled at the professor of mugglestudies, although his smile didn’t reach his eyes anymore. For these people it probably wouldn’t in a while.
Ivar walked up to her and crouched down by the bones Professor Galim had gestured at. Ivar wasn’t a master of autonomy, but he had seen his fair share of bones in beast lairs before. He had needed to deal with quite a few gastly creatures in his past work after all. Ivar lifted up some of the bones as he studied them closer.

While the Kibitzer train was an outdated machine, it could still run when it was set on the correct path. Still, something about that burst of adrenaline and motivation didn't feel right. All of this felt like some impossible deception - a manipulation of the Sight. But if she couldn't trust her own senses, she couldn't trust anyone. Breath hissed through her gritted teeth as she charged forth like a woman possessed, a righteous anger burning in her.

"Wait!" she shouted, voice thundering in the halls along with the heavy slaps of her boots on the stone floor. Stealth was not her strong suit, nor was it her preference. This nurse wouldn't be saving anyone if he was just going to throw himself into danger at the drop of a hat. Perhaps he'd been deceived? She'd heard from Caradoc that their enemies had a way of manipulating your mind. His account of events had never been in doubt, only his intentions.

She shifted her fingers along her wand, narrowing her eyes as she peered into the corridors. They were talking of the nurse's children. Could that be who is missing? "What does your daughter look like?" she asked, her voice suddenly soft and gentle as she whispered to the nurse. Some who had seen her with students would recognize this as a tone she often took when doing her readings - contemplative, calm and considerate. A total departure from her usual self. She was curious if his daughter truly matched the description of the child she saw, but if it did, she'd be keeping this to herself. It was just a way to calm the man down, if just for a minute. "Let the ladies look around and we'll make a decision. You need to make sure you don't make things worse by helping - don't they teach that in nurse school?"

Even with that shift in tone, she couldn't help but let one little insult slip, for her sake.

There was a reason Elena had chosen to wear battle robes for this particular outing, and it hadn't been appearance. No, it was that in this set of finely tailored, form-fitting robes with the shorter sleeves and coat she was actually able to run. And running, as she had predicted, came quite in handy in this scenario. She had to stretch her long legs quite a bit to catch up to the group around the frenzied Mr. Dupont, her fast jog considerably less dignified than her usual movements, especially considering that she had to be careful not to stumble over the odd broken bone on the dungeon floor. Sports had not been part of her daily activities in about two decades, and it showed.

He was yelling for his child, obviously hearing something they didn't, in the grip of an illusion unseen and unheard to the rest of them. Elaine wondered what it was that had happened to his child, or what was happening to it in his mind. There was a father ready to fight the world for his offspring, something she could relate to all too well, even though Gabriela was not her daughter by blood. Would she have reacted the same, if she'd heard her daughter? Would she if she'd be hearing Alexandru scream for her to save him? Elena knew the answer to the second question at least, the memory always present in her mind. What would she do without Occulmency to order her mind, to bring distance between herself and the memories? Too many questions.

It was Aleksander Ostrowski who pulled her from her musing, brought her back to reality when he called for her. They were at a crossroads. How oddly fitting.

"I appreciate your faith in my person, Professor Ostrowski," she replied when he complimented her, her grin still too wide to be entirely natural, thoughts half distracted by her dead husband. What were their odds? "They are good if we stay together, horrible if it manages to pry us apart further. This is our castle, but this shade as made its home here just as much as we have, I fear. Whatever this magic is, it might be more sentient then we have given it credit for so far."

What an intriguing thought indeed: magic that seemed to think by itself, to consider without prompt, to lure them apart, split off the weak ones first, those easily manipulated, with openings in their minds that could be explored. Elena's dark eyes stared at the darkness, fascinated.

She rubbed her left hand over her right forearm where the eagle had clawed at her under the cloth, for a moment forgetting even her silent guardians. Then she moved closer to her former student, wand drawn, instinct telling her to protect what was hers.

"Let's see what this shadow is made of, then." With a whispered incantation she plugged the blue flame from the air with her wand and sent them past Dupont, deeper into the darkness of the left corridor he was standing in front. Nora had covered the right, she saw from a glance, so she'd better keep the Frenchman from being abducted.

Zahid could not help but wonder if anyone had heard his question at all or if they'd been too distracted by everything that was happening. He would not move from this spot – this area of the corridor was safe at least, he'd checked – until they had at least some plan of action. Unless... Maybe he should take a page out of the Ancient Rune's professor's book and turn back – to call for Auror help, maybe?

Most of the others had run ahead already but Zahid certainly would not just follow behind on his own not even to regroup with the ones ahead. Splitting up even further and making their (his) way down did not seem like a good idea to him. At the very least, if they stayed put, they could cover a potential retreat, if necessary.

With all the questions about if or who has lost it, Zahid had to question whether or not Caradoc had to be added to an imaginary may-have-lost-it list as well, given the curse he had just cast at the Headmaster. One could only pray the former Healer knew what he was doing. Though he did not mean to question his friend's actions out loud, a muttered “Are you quite mad?” escaped him still.

Marcus kept up with the school nurse quite easily, ending up at the French man's side when the hall eventually reached an end, splitting into two separate directions. Marcus was still trying to figure out what had possessed the man to bolt in the first place. All he had said was "I need to find them" without really explaining who them was. The caretaker wasn't sure if he was meant to be aware of who this Nicolette and Victor were, but he was a bit agitated by the fact that the man had thrown aside everyone's ideas in favor of running down the hall.

"Who are these people you're looking for?" he asked of the man. He did not understand the French that Dupont had been saying, but "papa" was familiar. "Your children? Do you have kids at this school? Why would they be here?" Marcus was feeling severely out of the loop in what was motivating this man to throw all caution aside and dive into a den of hags with no plan. "We need full disclosure, Nurse Dupont."

"Trust nothing... Even the walls can lie to you..."

The walls? Right. He was reminded of how Nora explained the disappearing act one of the dungeon walls had done. This prompted Marcus to look at the dead end they had come to. Dupont was looking at the left side, and Nora seemed to be looking down the right. But what if...?

Marcus approached the dead end wall they had come to and reached out with his hand, wondering if it might be an illusion as well. Before he touched the wall, though, he thought twice and instead fished out his wand from its forgotten place in his pants pocket, then gestured to the wall. Not casting a spell. Merely poking the wall to see if it was solid or if the wand would go right through. If there was a hidden pathway, their decision would become that much harder. He heard the talk of sticking together, but there was bound to only be one correct path. Maybe it was not the visible one.

Fighting to tangle himself around Lear. Caradoc was having a hard time holding @Solomon Lear down and casting a spell at the same time. Though eventually, through gritted teeth he managed to utter the incantation and have the spell cast its effect on the old man. A sense of disgust and unease would boil inside the Headmaster's body. Something was wriggling its way out. The urge to vomit was getting worse. Until finally Solomon could feel the very real creature crawling out of his throat and mouth and fall onto his lap. A foot long centipede could be found wriggling around, trying to escape into the nearest hole in the wall.

After his successful cast and rolling the Headmaster on his side and off his body, the Head of Hufflepuff would get back on his feet stick out his hand towards @Zahid al-Benghazi ibn Masoud, telling him to wait to interject. Caradoc's guess had been right. He and Lear had been exposed to the same type of curse that had left him far more paranoid his own mind build up to. Seeing friends as foes, thinking they were out to sabotage you or stab you in the back. It was only a shame Kibitzer had not been there to witness the moment and see with her own eyes just how truthful Caradoc had been.

Returning to the matter at hand, Doc would lock eyes with Boniface. "Professor MacTavish." The Head of Hufflepuff began to speak in a soft voice. "If you could please see to it that our Headmaster reaches his quarters safely. I believe the man could use some extra rest." His blue eyes would scan over Solomon, head to toe. The feeling would pass, he knew this. "He'll need a lot of sleep and please, try to get him to eat just a little. He likely won't want to."

Especially @Ivar Eide was right to damn these people. While Caradoc had not been witness to the events that had transpired upstairs earlier, the Norwegian professor did not have to suffer retaliation when he was the one being attacked. The time for amends would be for later as he would see the Hufflepuff tend to the Headmaster with a curse. Stepping down to answer @Maya Galim 's inquiry, he would inspect the bones left on the floor. There was no clear pattern in them and their origins were many. Cats, rats, and... hm, human? It seemed whatever was hiding in these parts managed to snag a few of them.

When @Jean-Papi Dupont's spell would escape the bind of his wand as a faint almost flickering sense would tell him someone was present down the hall he pointed at. There did not seem to be a clear answer. The figure was right there at the end of the hall, why was it so faint? It was barely noticeable if he hadn't been actively paying attention to it. And then it was gone. @Elaine Pendrast's flames had likely scared it away. Afraid of perhaps being revealed. Regardless, it would have been clear to the nurse that that presence was not his child. Same as it would have been clear to @Hjørdis Jensen that something was off about this. They were being toyed with, Elaine figured as well. "Papa?" The child on the right would ask from afar.

Eventually another bulb of light would join their group as @Artemis Vernatis arrived near the intersection. Meeting up with both @Kateri Karr and @Rosalind Kibitzer who had been waiting for others to decide where to go. @River Jemari mounted his broom next to them, ready to either flee or charge straight into danger. It made @Aleksander Ostrowski's question all the more understandable as he posed it to his former tutor. What were their odds?

Looking at the odds, what was the chance of a man charging behind a rampant father seeking to desperately save his children. Then hear the first piece of advice coming from a nearby friend, only to test said advice by reaching out their hand towards the very wall they were made aware of. @Marcus Iwasaki had shown sense in pulling back and arming himself with a wand. But when the wooden stick's tip was about to hit the wet stone surface... it went through. The noses of Marcus and Aleksander would just barely have picked up the unmistakably scent of something vile overloading their olfactory systems. When in an instant, two large hands clasped themselves around the Caretaker's wrist. Their long curled black nails digging into his skin and pulling him into the wall.

Late for but a few seconds, those in front of the wall would be too late to grab or hang on to their Caretaker. They would hear an abominable screech and see the man disappear into the stone wall. A visual very reminiscent of passing through the wall at platform 93/4. There would be no scream from him. Not a word. He'd just be gone...

Some stories should never be told...

Eide seemed to be of some luck. Though the outcome was not what Maya had wanted. It was the usual suspects of a dungeon: rats, cats and the like. There could be some bones that are human, but the question is how old are they? To her, the bones were dry. Did that mean that whatever was down here had been here for much longer than they all thought? To think of who's bones it might be was too much for Maya. She stood up from squatting to the floor and used the wall torches to light hers that was in her hand, held tightly.

She saw some of her colleagues make their way further into the dungeons. She found it best to stick with her group rather than stay back alone. Who knows what could happen if everyone were to keep to themselves. Even so, staying in groups of three was ultimately a lot better than two, considering the odds if they were separated.

Maya made her way down the dungeon and caught up to both @Aleksander Ostrowski and @Elaine Pendrast. She did not know them both well, but she knew Pendrast to be very bright in her decision making which is needed. Maya only new strategies that were found in an army and now, her army knowledge was not best used here. There was no endgame; everything was unknown.

"Let me join you both," she said, adding extra light to the hallway dungeons from Elaine's bluebell flames spell. As she caught up with them, Maya began to feel odd. She guessed that it wasn't because they were in a creepy dungeon finding the unknown but rather it was Ostrowski and his abilities. Maya took a deep breath and walked with the two.

"Do you have a plan on what to do when we find whatever it is we are finding?" she asked, wondering what their thoughts were on the matter. He was a potions professor and she was skilled in defensive arts. Perhaps out of the two, Elaine would have a better idea on how to make sure they were in the lead from the darkness.
ACTION: Catch up with Aleksander Ostrowski and Elaine Pendrast and team up with them in the dark dungeon.

They were being watched. She was growing surer of it every second. At least... something felt very off about the whole thing. These children... were most likely hags in disguise, right? They had to be. Hjørdis did not genuinely believe that Dupont's children were down here - or any children for that matter. She did not know why Dupont's would be here, in particular but it stood to reason that they were not children. The castle had been cleared in June, right? Right? Of course, Erin Ryan's claims were something to consider but this did not feel like that.

Hags... If they had been here for months, what would they do? Settle in, make themselves comfortable, research the area, get a fresh supply of food... The dread at the thought of that quickly filled her. It was not a pleasant thought by any standards. Turning to the group, she went to share her idea. Well... that was the intention.

Everything got put on hold when she witnessed her best friend stabbing the wall with his wand. The walls were not to be trusted! Don't stab them! But she did not get a chance to scold him. Everything happened so quickly that she did absolutely nothing. Did he just- he- Marcus... went through the wall? Dragged? Pulled? Wait... Left, right and- Three. That made... Three.

It was quiet. Suspiciously quiet. She had expected noises of pain as the darkness that likely resided in the fake wall attacked but there was nothing. What the heck was going on? Her heart pounded. For the second time, Hjørdis found herself standing next to a wall pointing her light at it whilst her friend went through it. She already knew how bad this was. She had witnessed this before. But... this time... there was something very different about it.

Her brain went into overload. Plan A? No. It was too quiet. There was something very wrong. This wasn't going to work. Plan B? No no no... it wouldn't work, this wasn't a real wall. It would fail. Plan C? Yes. That's it. It might work but there was no guarantee... ah, there was no time for uncertainty right now, she had to be quick! Plan D? It worked last time. It was the best so far. But this was... No, there was far worse than the dark this time, far more on the line. Plan E? Possibly? It was a risk, it was reckless, it was foolish but it might just work... Ah screw it! There was no time!

Hjørdis stared with widened eyes at the blank space of where her friend had been standing mere moments earlier. The silence was deafening. It was only a moment or two but her brain racked over every possible plan she could think of in such a short amount of time. This was not what she wanted to do. Definitely not.

Twice. TWICE? Gosh, she needed better friends. People who did not enjoy going through walls. But... since she lacked them. May as well join them. It looked like the fastest plan to execute right now was... going through the wall again. Why did she have to be friends with these people?! They were literally making her walk through walls for them!

Gripping her wand, she held her protego at the ready, "Use light," She randomly instructed a moment or two after Marcus disappeared to anyone who was listening. Light, as she had learned, could counter the darkness living in the wall. The last time she walked through the wall, she blasted it with so much light. It was probably the reason she got through without a single scratch. Unfortunately, this time their enemy was a bit greater than the dark. She had to risk the darkness and accept the risk of the devil she knew than the one she did not.

Without waiting for the others, she went to follow Marcus. To wherever he went. Into the wall she would follow, "Protego!" she mumbled out before it was too late. The shield charm and the light had held the darkness at bay before... It would have to do the trick this time. But it was not the darkness that concerned her.

Her actions were reckless and she did not expect anyone else to follow suit. But she knew she had to do this. No matter what the consequences were. Logic and reason went out of the window a while back. If anyone present thought she was being rational before, they probably would not now. But her current future best friend was in there and she'd be damned before she let him face it alone.

There was a biting cold that stilled his hand; that stilled his breath and halted his gaze. His visage a contorted expression of panic and rage, covered in an icy sheen. He was still cognizant, aware of the passage of time. He could still feel. He still strained against the binding cold. He would fall, the descent to the ground was swift, he did not have far to go. Caradoc might have caught the armored man but he would feel uncanny truth. The armor accounted for most of the weight Caradoc would support. Like a rigid board, Solomon could hear Caradoc's muffled voice. It was as if he was underwater. He felt as if he was drowning. It was hard to breathe, the sideways scene nothing but a cloudy haze. Shadows, like the ones in his night terrors - darkness like men that came for him. A silent scream, nothing would come from the frozen form and alien noises, muffled and grating. His urge to run he would submit to, but his body would betray him.

A wave of nausea would hit him. A choking, filling sense as he attempted to gulp in the air. Burning hot and bitter, something writhing would force its way to the back of his throat. He could not wretch in his fixed and frozen state. Rather the Headmaster choked on his own bile and saliva as the dark, glistening form of a centipede was expelled. The physical manifestation of corruption, the trademark of a hag. Indeed, Solomon had been suffering profoundly from more than night terrors and terrible memories that were the product of months of neglect and abuse. Left on his side, a string of saliva would run from his mouth and leave a puddle on the floor next to him.

The sense of nausea, the feeling of dis-ease would not dissipate. In fact they only began to swell, for the Headmaster knew what terrors awaited them in the dark. Not that he could speak, not that he could warn. Rendered mute. His breaths evacuated his body in ragged wheezes. They were facing something that was more dangerous than they had presupposed.

"Sweet Jesus..." Artemis muttered the Muggle saying as he saw Marcus get pulled into the wall he was poking with his wand. He remembered Hjørdis mentioning that the walls were not to be trusted. He didn't know what she meant by that but now, looking at the very same wall that Marcus was just pulled through, he could see and understand why she gave that little advice. The walls truly were alive...though that shouldn't be expected in this castle. Everything moved in this castle and things weren't always as they seemed within Hogwarts. It truly shouldn't have come as a surprise to Artemis that a wall shimmered and pulled a bloody man through the blasted wall!

But it did. At least...it bothered Artemis because that could have been any of them. What was behind that wall anyway? None of them...except Marcus now...knew. But they couldn't leave him, either!

Artemis turned to Hjørdis to ask and find out what the next course of action should be when the damned insane woman lit her wand with a Protego and waltzed right through the wall after the man! What the hell was she thinking?! If anything happened to her, he'd have to deal with Cara and that was one man Artemis didn't want to deal with. If they were kids, sure...Art could probably give the older man a run for his money and best him in a fight or duel. But now? The man was packing muscles and strength Artemis wished he could have. There was no way he wanted anything to do with an angry Caradoc Browne if he found out this woman recklessly went into a wall after some random newbie teacher!

Turning from the nurse and the others, Artemis stared at the wall. "Use light," she had said before darting off into the wall. Is that what they needed to best this damned thing? More light? They figured out that the light bested the dense darkness surrounding them, especially after seeing Cara being pulled into it, but Artemis didn't have a clue if the same applied for the walls. But he had to trust his instincts...and Hjørdis'.

"Damn it, Jensen! Foolish woman...Protego," he grounded out as he also called out the same spell the woman before him said before he moved to walk through the wall. Turning to the others, he said, "Stay together and stay safe. There's strange shit going on down here and we don't know what the hell just snatched up Marcus nor do we know what is supposedly calling the nurse. Keep him grounded and make sure he doesn't do anything stupid." The orders were given just as he pushed his wand in front of him and walked through the wall himself, but he wasn't even sure if anyone would heed him. He wasn't anyone special to this group, but he knew that he was right. It was bad enough that they separated into two teams. Now they'll be split into three. He could only hope that no one followed after them into the wall. He could only hope that the wall didn't seal itself up behind him, either.
