Passing Notes
Katie noticed a girl that she hasn't noticed in the hallways before, sit next to her just as their defense lesson started. she had rusty red hair and distinct almond shaped eyes. She was actually quite pretty and had a natural sense of grace to her. Katie didn't recognize her immediately, so she probably wasn't a Slytherin, but she'd never chosen her friends based support on their Hogwarts house. That just seemed like an unfair method of discrimination.
The girl seemed kind though, and She wanted to get to know her better, but the lesson was starting and She wouldn't dare talk out of turn while the teacher was talking. She pulled out a scrap piece of parchment and a quill. She quickly wrote a note to her.
She aloud it across the desk. She hoped it didn't seem to abrupt or awkward. She was bad at initiating things and constantly worried that her slight bluntness would our other people off. In reality, Katie just wanted to avoid miscommunications that arose when people were too subtle. Katie may be a Slytherin, but their were plenty of times that required bluntness to effectively communicate. She looked over at the girl, looking to see if she would read her note.

Passing Notes
Lydea was biting the tip of her quill as she took notes, unable even with that to keep her other hand steady. It was in her hair, twisting the strands absentmindedly, and keeping her busy.
She hadn't quite been paying attention to anyone around her when a note slid across the desk and into her view. She looked to her left, eyed the dark haired pretty girl and gave her a smile.
The note she scribbled under Katie's was short and sweet, though she didn't think the girl would mind. While she wasn't afraid to get caught passing notes, she'd rather not be called out on it and lose points for Gryffindor. So instead, she eyed her surroundings keenly and pushed the scrap over the table.Hi! I'm Lydea. It's nice to meet you. Um, how's your day?
"Oh, you dropped that," she whispered, and then picked it up and handed it to Katie. A good way to feign an accident and perhaps keep them both out of trouble--but let it be known that Dea was not afraid of trouble, and if this Katie turned out to be a friend, detention (if they got it) together didn't seem so bad.

Passing Notes
Katie smiled as she read the note. She wasn't able to respond right.then as the teacher just started taking role at that moment though.
Katie quickly wrote out her note and folded it up into a small parchment square. She waited until their professor's back was turned to the board, and subtly slid the note over to Lydea and dipped her quill back into ink. She titled a new, clean piece of parchment. "DADA: Lesson One" and looked up to see what their Professor was saying and what was being written down on the blackboard. Likely, whatever was being written down on the blackboard would be the most important parts of the lecture. She wrote down what looked to be the most important things the professor was saying as her mind drifted.
Katie glanced over at Lydea, but she couldn't tell if she had seen the note and was sitting a response back, or was just taking notes for Defense. It has taken Katie a bit of time to respond, so she wouldn't judge Lydea if it was the latter. She might not have noticed it yet.
