General Description:
Scotland, and the rest of the UK, is in the middle of its industrial revolution. Trains are now the way of travelling, just like airships, especially zeppelins. The world is facing some big changes, now with the upcoming "machine revolution". Mines are being exhausted to the limit, and being a mineworker is now the most common job.
None of the so called commanders is really thinking about what all these machines and mines do to our nature and the common folks. While the upper classes only care about the money they gain, the lower and middle class are feeling a negative change.
The society is divided in three very clear sections. First we have the commanders, who are the leading group of the country. They make up about 5 percent of the population. They manage the factories, transport and economy. Secondly, there is the middle class, also called the commons. They make up about seventy percent of the whole society. These people are mostly whealty and are not struggling with any kind of money issues. The last 25 percent are the lower class, known (only by the commanders and commons) as the beggars. They have the poorest families and work in the mines as the lowest possible ranks. Some of the family fathers even work full-time in the mines, only coming up on sunday, for church.
Christianity is the main religion in the whole UK now. If you're not going to church, you probably won't be accepted by your community. The commanders also make sure everyone goes to church, to keep the society coherent, and make them surpress themselves.
The thing that makes this world special is the amount of secrets it has. Some elderly talk about some form of magic that is used to make even bigger machines and with more power. This rumour is brushed away as rubbish by the younger generations, but some believe it and search for it. This special force is called Glow and it is said that when it is used the bronze and copper parts of a machine glow cyan. Nobody has ever really seen it but when you ask any higher class commander about it they act as if they don't understand you clear and try to change the subject.
There is a small secrecy, the Glow hunters, who strongly believe in these rumours. They have meetings in the local library, where they can talk without being eavesdropped on. These Glow hunters are very careful to make sure that the government or any other commander doesn't hear them, otherwise they could be convicted for heresy.
House MacPhial:
This detached house, located just outside Glasgow is made out of dark wooden panels, connected with copper and bronze pieces. On top of the house stands a copper statue of an owl, it's weathered and seems like it can fall off any time. The doors are slightly too big for the size of the house, this makes it look a little spooky. A door knocker can be found in the centre of the door, also a bronze owl. When entering the mansion, you will walk into a small lobby with a portal to the main hall. There you will find stairs to the right and to the left and two rooms connected to the main hall, both filled with extraordinary objects.
The house has some hidden spaces, but nobody will find them, unless they know where to find them. Many of the rooms are filled with special machines, equipment and lots of books. Mostly about space and machines. The mansion has a small astronomy tower with a large bronze telescope in it, also packed with lots and lots of books.
When going upstairs via the left staircase, you will find a bedroom on your left hand, this bedroom is warmly lighted with a few lanterns hanging from the ceiling, the floor is littered with papers with complicated maths and other calculations. On the desk you can see a variety of different inks, aswell as some pocket watches surrounded by small sprockets.
The house seems very messy, but when you look closer you can see that all books are sorted by author and after that by date. Most of the chambers do indeed look messy, but there can always be found some kind of structure.
The Library:
Like most other libraries this one is packed with books. Bookshelves reach even untill heights of more then 60 feet. When you enter the library through it's castle-like gate, you will find yourself in a surprisingly open space. In the middle of the library a small glass dome is connected to 3 different towers. The towers are made out of bricks, the last signs that this building was once a factory.
The first of the three towers is made for the non-fiction-info books. This includes all dictionaries, encyclopedias and all other books that contain facts and other information. The second tower contains all fiction and literature books. This is the most visited tower, so it also has a few cozy chairs and a couch for visitors to take a seat and enjoy their books.
The last of the three towers is locked. Nobody really knows what's in there, but rumors only grow that in there are the forbidden books, hidden there by the government, because they are "heretical" or as some call them "too-much-knowledge-to-be-good" books. Nobody has ever seen anyone enter or leave that tower, and the lights are always out. A little sign on the door to this tower says 'No entry. Penalty: Banishment or worse.'
The small glass dome on top is slightly tinted orange, and when standing precisely in the centre underneath it, you can see the top of the second tower. Behind the library there is a small garden with lots of herbs. It is allowed to take a walk through there, but it is forbidden to pick any of the plants there. This garden is the only herb-garden in Glasgow. Many birds have settled here to find the little amount of insects for their baby bird children.
