FIN You Fit Me Better Than My Favourite Sweater

The rush of emotions overwhelmed the young girl, and she had no idea how she was supposed to sort them out. She was twelve, for Merlin's sake. How was she supposed to deal with lumps in her throat and having a heart attack every time Reid came near her? She was becoming frustrated quickly, and she was never really good with controlling herself past that point. She could be rash, or sometimes she ended up just spilling everything out. And no matter how much Sabrina hoped for the latter, the world was not working in her favour today.

She turned to look at Reid when he stood up, and was a little more surprised that he proceeded to bound towards her. She had figured by this point he wouldn't want to even try, but he still was, and it was just all too confusing for her. She needed to talk to him, or else they may be irreparable. She did not want that. She didn't!

"I don't know what I did and I-I really don't know if I can fix it now, but I want to try. Back at the lake, I promised that we'd never stop being friends and ..." Sabrina watched as he became more distressed about the issue, and regret settled in her stomach. She should just tell him the truth. "I don't want to lose you as a friend, especially not now. O-or ever ... too. You freakin' pinky promised you jerk.

"I know I did!" Sabrina exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air, as though she were giving up. And in a way, she was, because the world just didn't ever want to work her way in these sorts of situations. She might as well dig herself a grave outside of the ballroom window, and jump out. If she died or not would depend - she wasn't exactly sure what was outside of the ballroom. This was the first time she had been in there. Oh, this has gotten so off track. She held her stare on Reid for one of the longest times that night, and she let out a sigh.

"Just don't hate me, okay? Because I know that this hasn't worked out well before, and I don't want to lose you either," She huffed. Honestly, she hadn't expected her feelings to hit her so hard. Her eyes teared up - what if she loses him? She should doubt he would leave because of it, right? But even though they have been friends for so long, Sabrina couldn't trust it. With the last of her courage, and her pride, she sighed, "I thought about it since we sat in the Small Hall a-and.. I-I think I like you a lot more than a friend should?" She had said it so quickly, she hoped he had caught it, because there was no way she was going to be able to repeat herself again. The embarrassment she was going to inflict on herself had reached its limit tonight.

Even with the time that ticked on, he felt himself get increasingly worried of how she would respond. The stare she held on him was so hard to break from, it was a little frightening to be fair. What was she thinking? Was she happy that he pretty much heckled her? Probably not. But he got it out of here, right? He was anticipating her answer with so much worry, that he was starting to wonder if he really wanted to hear what she said. But there wasn't anything in the world that could make him leave her side, that's not how good friends are supposed to be.

Unless she said she didn't want to be around him anymore, he was going to be around her for as long as he could be. But what she said next left him a little stunned, quite stunned. He opened his mouth, nothing came out but a small noise. Did she mean what he thought she meant? Reid's heart pounded in his ears, he could melt right now if it was possible. No amount of cold would be able to reduce his temperature and it only seemed to get worse from there. "Uh, um. " He pulled on his fingers, trying to not seem so nervous on his part. All the confidence he had when he demanded answers was now diminished to tiny embers.

Did he like her? Yes, he liked her. He liked a good bit, he liked her so much that it was honestly scary to him. Reid liked it when she smiled at him especially and when she laughed at his jokes, even when he knew they weren't even that funny. He figured she could spend time with anyone else but him and yet she chose to be around him more than half the time. If he thought about it more, she made him a little weak sometimes. So did that mean the same to her? Perhaps. Calm down. He needed to calm down, so he took two deep breaths and exhaled. "I like ... uh, a lot." he mumbled under his breath. Did he hear her? He ate his words a bit and had done so on purpose this time.

"I like you and... uh, I like ..." He put his hands on his face and groaned, he wasn't articulate and he felt dumb. He gently patted his rosy cheeks and wearily sighed, he could pass out at any moment. One more time. "I'm stupid Sabby and I like you a lot more than a friend should too." He didn't exactly feel relief saying it, in fact it just made him more tired to actually say it. "I mean - you look nice when you smile. I like your laugh a lot, I guess. No! I do. Just hanging out with you is ... great. I like doing that and -"

His hands tucked into his pockets and he tapped his foot impatiently. What did he just say? What was he going to say? He already forgot what was spoken, like discarded word vomit. "I want to do that more because I like you ... that much? I don't know." A mess, his whole explanation was a mess, what if he said too much? What if he didn't even say enough? Reid broke the gaze and pursed his lips, causing him to glance down towards the floor. That was right, he liked her a lot. It was a scary realization, because now he knew he wouldn't stop thinking about it.

"Trouble usually finds me."

He was hesitating. Did people normally hesitate when their best friend admits her feelings to you? Probably. Honesty she wish she could cut herself out of existence, but unfortunately life was not a piece of paper. She could count the seconds in between what his 'uh', and between what he said next. Except, she didn't quite hear him, which was silly because they were in the middle of an empty room. It could be because the blood rushing through her ears, or the fact she was concentrating on counting so hard that she didn't catch it. She had totally ruined the friendship, hadn't she? She definitely shouldn't have told him.

"I like you and... uh, I like ..."

Sabrina obviously wasn't hearing right. But that was just it - she heard perfectly fine. She parted her lips slightly - should she say something? Before she could, he continued on, "I'm stupid Sabby and I like you a lot more than a friend should too. I mean - you look nice when you smile. I like your laugh a lot, I guess. No! I do. Just hanging out with you is ... great. I like doing that and -" She watched as he cut himself off, and tucked his hands into his pockets. She didn't think she had ever spectated him being so.. nervous before. But why was that what she was thinking about, when he was just basically saying he felt the same way? To say she was kind of awestruck was an understatement. She hadn't ruined their friendship, then?

"I want to do that more because I like you ... that much? I don't know."

It was safe to kill Sabrina now. She could die, and kind of be alright with it, because at least she hadn't ruined their entire friendship like she had anticipated. Any outcome but that was welcome, even if it slightly confused her. "Er, so you don't hate me?" She asked, and mentally facepalmed at the fact that out of everything she could have said, that was what she chose. Well, that was basic Sabrina, after all. She puffed out her cheeks, trying to blink away any tears she had left pooling in her eyes. If some had escaped her control, she wouldn't have noticed. She was far too focused on what Reid was saying.. or trying to say, anyways.

She wasn't sure if she should say more - how was she supposed to respond to him saying that he liked her more than a friend too? She didn't exactly prepare for this, and she was feeling like she was a silly kid who hadn't studied for a test. Even though she didn't study for most tests, she assumed this would be how it felt if someone who usually did study felt when they didn't. "I want to hang out with you more too, I do," She mentioned, taking in a deep breath. She was still a little shaky, but it was more likely to be because she was still cooling off from her previous nerves more than anything at this point. "Uh, I don't know.. what to say.." She trailed off, reaching her hand up to the back of her neck to scratch it.

It was hard not to agree with her, he pretty much said everything he had to say. He didn't know what else to say to her at this point. Reid was thinking in the moment and he certainly didn't take the future into account. He was quiet for a bit, awkward and unsure of what to actually say. It was a fact that he wasn't smooth, probably not sweet, but just a bit of an oddball at the moment. That seemed fine with his friend though, despite him thinking otherwise. Her lack of response though was just met with his terribly timed sense of humor. "After all I said and how I totally spilled my innards for you - that's what you give me, Hurst?" he lightly laughed.

Humor was the best defense that he could offer to her. Reid coughed once, clearing his throat and then stepping over to her. The boy gingerly swung his arm across her shoulder and gently bumped her shoulder with his fist. "How about we figure it out later? You're out of your curfew hours and I'm really, really, not supposed to let you go." he smugly grinned. Yes, this was good. He huffed and glanced over his shoulder to look at the door. "Plus, you kind of yelled really loudly earlier so ... I don't want to get caught with an on the lose criminal." He tilted his head at her, looking quite cheeky with his change of tone.

Of course it was just like Reid Kovacs to crack a joke at such a time. Regardless, she found herself laughing along, shaking her head at him. Then she noticed that she could be shaking her head at the whole situation, as well. As his arm slung over her shoulder - quite awkwardly, may I add, considering she was still a smidge taller than he was - she felt comfortable again. Kind of like normal, like the past fifteen minutes hadn't happened. And honestly, it was preferred that way. Even though they had taken a step forward in their friendship - relationship? - that night, this was about all the drama she could handle. All she could use now was a good night's rest. But knowing her, there was no way that that would be happening.

"Well, I could say a lot more, Kovacs, but I don't want to out-do you." She retorted to the Hufflepuff, a grin finally spreading across her face. After all that stress, it hadn't seemed needed anyways. And that, at least, was a total relief for the girl. She couldn't wait to just retire to her dorm, and she'd probably end up laying in bed, staring at the ceiling even then. Contemplating if this was reality or fiction. If it was truly reality, then Sabrina was surprised that it's going so well.

"How about we figure it out later? You're out of your curfew hours and I'm really, really, not supposed to let you go. Plus, you kind of yelled really loudly earlier so ... I don't want to get caught with an on the lose criminal."

Sabrina rose an eyebrow at him now, pursing her lips together as she crossed her arms over her chest. She narrowed her eyes at him now, but also spared a glance towards the door that lead in to the Ballroom. "Is this your way of trying to get rid of me? If so, lame attempt." She stated, even though she knew that she should probably get going. If anyone were to walk in to the Ballroom to see her with the Head Boy, a detention would only be expected, and there goes her limited amount of leniency. But was it so bad that she didn't exactly.. want to go? She would get detention ten times over for this stupid boy.

Reid was a little envious of Sabrina's height, actually quite envious of the fact that she was at least an inch taller than him. Thus the hug was a little awkward, but thankfully she didn't seem to mind it at all. He slipped his free hand in his pocket, rolling his eyes at her comment towards his totally dubious proposal. "Exactly, you're just so unbearable Hurst. I can't believe you'd be such a troublemaker." he said with fake smugness. His heart began to calm, his face slowly losing its rosy complexion.

The boy huffed as he stuck his hand out towards the door as if he was leading her. With the grin that could probably be good enough to smack, he said, "After you." Reid was fond of the idea of them more than being friends, but it also made him a little scared. What if what he thought was more was just a figment of his imagination? Where did they stand now? Reid didn't know, he certainly wasn't going to find out tonight.

But at the same time, he quite liked it. For someone so young like him, it seemed better to take it slow and go through the motions. He might not be ready for something more, but he wouldn't know until he tried. But the trying could be sooner or it could be later, it just depended on the circumstance. But it seemed fine as long as it was with Sabrina in the end.

The way that Reid was able to relax Sabrina was unique. She went from her heart racing a million beats per minute, to being laughing, and joking around with him again. The ways that he seemed to take effect on her were limitless, and it was a wonder that she is only figuring out why now. She liked her best friend more than she cared to admit, and he liked her too. The thought made her bubble with excitement like a cauldron on the verge of overflowing. But it was late, and such a time for excitement had long passed. Instead, a long, drawn-out yawn came from the red haired girl. She was getting sleepy now that her stresses had been somewhat fixed. Of course.

"Exactly, you're just so unbearable Hurst. I can't believe you'd be such a troublemaker."

"I'm just the worst aren't I?" She continued to play along, grinning childishly at him. She rolled her eyes as he gestured to the door, and was quick to make her way towards the Ballroom door, throwing a, "Yeah, whatever, Kovacs," over her shoulder as she did so. She tugged open the Ballroom door, leaning against it to hold it open for her friend. "You're slow." Was all she could mention, laughing a bit afterwards.

Like a chain effect, her yawn forced a long drawn yawn from the young student. He heavily sighed and rubbed his eye, he still had his rounds to finish and he was hesitant in parting with Sabrina. But the way she was right now indicated that she needed sleep, not anymore chatter. "Yeah, yeah." A scoff came from the boy as he rolled his eyes, realizing he had forgotten his wand on the table. "One second."

He took off towards the table, snatching his wand from the shiny tabletop with swift ease. Before heading back, he did take the time to move the chairs back to their positions and ensure no one would ever knew they were here. Well it was easy to tell, but not as much if he just left it the way they were. He held the wand at his side and strode towards the girl in an exhausted swagger, clearly tired like she was. "Make sure to close it quietly, Hurst." he chuckled, slipping past the girl. If it was slammed, surely it would echo quite loudly.

Things felt a little more natural now, they fell into a rhythm he knew the steps to. It was a dance that he was familiar with and he was most comfortable with. Reid turned around, his wand in hand before he said, "Lumos." No light. A frown sat on his features as he tried once more, gently flicking his wand. "Lumos."

More concentration and stronger pronunciation proved him well as the tip of his want illuminated with a faint glow. His free hand slipped into the pocket of his trouser as he waited for the girl. "Come on, slowpoke." he replied in a quiet voice. A teasing grin could barely be seen against the dim light, her tower awaited.

Watching the boy attempt to cast the spell was slightly amusing, and almost made Sabrina laugh a little bit. Yet, she simply watched him with a silly grin on her face, shaking her head. He was adorable sometimes, this boy, and Sabrina could probably go on and on about it for the remainder of her life. She wouldn't even call that over-exaggerating, and she only ever really had a habit of speaking the truth. That could be a good or bad thing, at this point she wasn't quite sure, but she did hope it didn't get her in trouble one day.

This night would be one that Reid and Sabrina would keep to themselves. It had the potential to cause Reid to lose his Head Boy position, and it could give Sabrina three weeks' worth of detention. She didn't exactly want to spend that listening to Professor Mellowrose's snores, or worrying about Professor Blackburn's tarantula crawling all over her. She wasn't a fan of spiders, and would probably end up causing the Charms professor's spider to bite her. That was something she would rather not endure. She kept that in mind as she eased the door closed behind her.

"Reid, wait up!" She hissed at him, pleased to see that he actually had waited up for her. She approached him, the light illuminating the space between them from his wand. She was bad at staying quiet, and wouldn't be surprised if her shoes with their small heels ended up making a few noises in the dark. She kept an ear open, listening for any sign of professors. Thankfully, there was none. "I'm glad you found me tonight." She stated, biting on her lips. She wanted to stick around to say a proper goodnight, and that she would probably do. She just wasn't the best at showing what she wanted, unfortunately. So she stood there, her hands tucked behind her back as she smiled at the boy in front of her. "I don't think anyone else would have been as nice."

There was a dopey smile on his features, simply nodding to the girl's comments as she tucked her hands behind herself. He wasn't a proper gentleman, but he was never the type to simply leave someone behind or hand them over - chances were chances. There were often times where he didn't know how to respond to people, not just Sabrina, he wasn't the best at expressing himself verbally. Her words were heartfelt in some ways, he could feel that. Yet he was often stuck, feeling as if he either said too much or not enough.

The phrase that actions spoke louder than words were often the only way he could show his appreciation, among other things. "Well, glad I found you Hurst." he replied with a soft exhale. Clearly he was, he just felt weird to admit it. He pursed his lips, brushing his hands together as he took a quick glance around them. A soft 'ahem' came from him, motioning his head towards the direction that would eventually lead them to Gryffindor's commons.

"It's part of my job to walk to you back, you might slip away again and loiter somewhere you shouldn't be at." Reid grinned. This time he didn't wait for her as he made his way towards that direction, he wasn't going to hear her protest if she had any. He wanted to see her through just for tonight at least.
