Summer sun still high in the sky and steadily beating down upon the dusty lot of the quidditch training pitch, the sound of children zipping around on their brooms practicing the game drew Sylvain to watch them out of curiosity. Sylvain thought that researching his classmates would help him determine what he was lacking when it came to flying. Watching his fellow students so easily accomplish what he'd spent most of last year trying to do with even with an ounce of success, Sylvain sat himself down and did his best to observe the satisfactory examples they made.
Assuming that his lack of knowledge in regards to the consequences of failure played a big component in his fear of flying, Sylvain had set himself to studying trajectory and as a result learned a couple physics formulas to steady his nerves. None of them were actually helpful when it came to magic so far, but they were comforting to know at the least. Intense sunlight replaced his curiosity with a more lame half interest as Sylvain moved further off to the side of the pitch to avoid the dazzling sun. Wishing he'd borrowed Flash's binoculars before coming out to the pitch, Sylvain could barely see the faces of the students riding brooms. Instead of straining to see, Syl was struck with inspiration. Those on the pitch flying were a sort of live critical thinking math problem he could solve for fun.
Digging his wand out from his school robes, Sylvain began drawing parabolic calculations in the dirt. First he determined the velocity of his selected broom rider by assuming a fixed thirty-two and nine tenths kilometers per hour. Taking his best guess at a starting angle, Syl then elected that Thirty-five degrees didn't seem so bad a starting angle for a Heavenly Trajectory. Marking his data down with each thought in the sand using his wand like a stylus, Sylvain then guesstimated the initial height needed to reach the moon. It was meant to be a joke at first, but it slowly sort of evolved into a science experiment as time passed. Diligently, he continued changing the variables of his equation until he was satisfied with his sand-lot-rocket-science. Applying the final touches to his lunar logarithms, equations meant to express how impossible moon flight on a broom was, Sylvain drew a wizard flying over to moon next to the work he'd done, if only to make himself smile.
It was then that he noticed a quidditch player hovering near him, copying down his math on pencil and paper. His uniform Yellow, Sylvain muttered a single word in greeting. "H-hey."

Okay, attempt number four. Why was this so hard? Why did the broom start to protest when he got higher? Was it the angle he had it at? This broom was specifically made to go super high. Did he need better technique? Aaron was seated close to the brush of the broom, with eyes forward and wearing his aerodynamic Quidditch robes (minus the protective gear). He even had a small notebook in his pocket with all his notes on technique. He continued to take notes on when the broom protested too, but it's not like he could make much sense of them or how to improve. He imagined he needed some knowledge of physics if he wanted to make actual progress, but for now he was just stuck with trail and error.
The other concern here being that he was a little worried about the other people that had just entered the training pitch. It was probably a given that he shouldn't be flying as high as he just had been, so now he needed to stick closer to the ground or wait until the others left. With this in mind, he lowered towards the ground again only to find his interest captured by a boy drawing in the dirt.
Aaron hovered closer to the brunet boy, very curious what he might be writing about. What if he had seen the Hufflepuff going too high, and he was taking notes on rulebreakers? Trying to be sneaky, the twelve-year-old descended while the boy had his eyes focused on the dirt and took a peek. Equations? Aaron's eyes widened at the sight. Was that a person.. flying to a circle? Or- the moon! Could it be? Was this guy making notes on flying to the moon? He didn't even have a broom on him!
Aaron whipped out his notebook and pencil from his robes pocket, beginning to copy down exactly what was in the dirt. None of it made sense to him, but he figured he could ask Lydia when he got back to the common room. But then- the boy looked at him!
"Oh, hi!" Aaron said, a chagrined smile appearing on his face. "Sorry, it's just.." Aaron hesitated to reveal his own plans to the boy, but soon came to the conclusion that he'd rather admit the truth than be accused of something nefarious. "Well, I just thought it was really interesting. Are you trying to calculate how to fly to the moon?' He descended the rest of the way to the ground, dismounting with broom in one hand and his notebook in the other. He held out the broom to the boy. "This is a moontrimmer! It was designed to go super high up - maybe even to the moon!"

Sylvain smiled as he realized the hufflepuff was copying down his math, but became increasingly self-aware as the math itself was incomplete and ninety-percent guess work anyways. "Yeah, I suppose it would be possible if you jumped from the astronomy tower but even then...." Sylvain's voice trailed as he motioned to the Western tower. He wasn't serious by a long stretch when he said that someone could do it if they jumped from the tower. In his mind it was a joke, since clearly no wizard could travel to the moon on a broom.
"... You probably don't want to actually fly to the moon. Though I have to admit it'd be impressive if you did." Sylvain looked awhile at moontrimmer, his eyes fixating on the broom itself. Perhaps its qualities would allow a student to reach the moon, but even if it did, would it accomodate for the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere, or provide lunch on those cold weeks in space. Probably not.
"M'name's Sylvain," he said with kick of his leg erasing all of the math he'd performed in the sand of the quidditch pitch. "I'm not sure I caught your name. Lovely broom you've got there though."

The astronomy tower? Aaron's eyes followed the boy's gesture to the tallest tower in Hogwarts, wondering why he had never considered that before. Kicking off from a taller place probably meant you'd end up higher up, right? And that tower was the tallest in this huge castle on a cliff! Surely that would give him - or anyone trying to reach the moon - a huge advantage! That made perfect sense!
"But I mean- isn't it kind of crazy that no wizards or witches have been to space before? How hard is it really if muggles have been multiple times?" Aaron said in response to the other boy's doubt about him wanting to go to space. "Like, if this broom was made to go to space, why hasn't anyone done it yet? Maybe witches and wizards just don't have the same curiosity... but I do!" Aaron found himself getting quite impassioned about this, but he calmed as the boy introduced himself.
"I recognize you from classes.. you're in Ravenclaw, right?" Aaron asked, after it was confirmed that the boy's name was Sylvain. He knew the names and faces of pretty much everyone in their year, having heard all the names multiple times in roll calls and having an incredible memory for faces. It was a talent he did not really recognize, but something that helped with making friends. "I'm Aaron, from Hufflepuff," he introduced in kind, his signature big smile on his face. It faltered when Sylvain kicked his math away, but quickly resolved at the compliment of his broom.
"Thanks! I got it just a couple weeks ago - as a congratulations for our win against Durmstrang," Aaron explained, his voice full of pride. It had been a very rough game for everyone involved, but when Hogwarts came out on top, Aaron had been so proud! "Want a closer look? You can take it for a spin, if you'd like," he invited, once again holding the broom out for the guy to take if he wanted. It didn't cross his mind for a second that it could be crashed - he figured anyone at the Training Pitch would be well-versed in flying.

The offer to ride Aaron's broom was a nice one. There were many reasons Sylvain felt compelled to say yes. That he wanted to go fast was one of them, though that similar urge to go fast made him second-guess himself. "No, it's not safe." He thought of all the ways it could harm him, of ways he would lose control and going at that speed... No, he simply couldn't. "Though it's really kind, I'm inexperienced and I would risk breaking it or worse." He frowned a bit, worried that Aaron might be upset with his caution.
"Though I have no doubt you could be the very wizard who does go to space one day Aaron." With magic and desire, all paths were open to Aaron. Who knew, if he practiced and researched how, Sylvain himself could go probably find a way to get to the moon, right? Of course not. Though as fantastic as that sounded, it didn't accomplish much, so it wasn't intrinsically useful to what Sylvain wanted for himself. His pursuits were much more earthly, though if he decided to put his mind to it maybe the two stood a chance.
"Are you sure there's no wizard who's ever gone to space before?" It'd be far easier to go to space if they had access to someone else's research or notes.

Not safe? Aaron instinctively brought the broom closer to himself when he learned that Sylvain was not experienced in broom riding. It was now that the thought of his Moontrimmer being crashed crossed Aaron's mind, and he frowned slightly. Maybe he should be more careful about who he offered his broom to. Apparently being at the Training Pitch was not enough to indicate experience in riding.
Realizing that he was frowning and clutching his broom much more protectively now, Aaron's eyes widened and he fumbled to apologize. "No, no, it's okay! Thank you for telling me, sorry if that seemed rude just now," he said, feeling a bit sheepish about the way he had just withdrawn his broom. He was just very protective of the expensive piece of equipment. He had only ridden it a couple times now, with it being only a few days into the semester, and he wanted to have it for a long time to come. In fact, he needed to look into getting a broomcare kit.
"It would be pretty cool to go to space," Aaron agreed, smiling again at the mention of him being the one to go to space. "And I'm not entirely sure about if any wizards have been to space. Maybe I'll go to the library to find out, or maybe ask Professor Karr," he said, his thought process being vocalized as it came to him. "But I feel like I heard somewhere that no wizard had flown to space before..." The twelve-year-old just could not recall where he had heard that.
His brown eyes lifted back to Sylvain, and he smiled again. "Wanna help me with my research? You seem like you could calculate trajectory and stuff like that," he said, having no idea what the word trajectory even meant. But he knew it had to do with physics and takeoffs and such. He would learn what it meant so he could theorize better how to reach the moon. Sylvain's drawing of the calculations in the dirt - which Aaron had copied into his notebook - would probably help.

"Better safe than sorry," He said quickly in response, "I don't think it's rude to protect your treasured broom." Mostly because the chances were that he would break it if he rode on it. Not maliciously of course, but out of inexperience and fear of falling. "Though maybe one day when I've got a little more practice you'll let me ride it." He didn't want Aaron to worry, or fear his feelings weren't understood. "It's a really sweet ride after all."
"I agree," Sylvain said while nodding his head slightly. "My family all say that space is the final frontier! We could be explorers!" Sylvain also thought he recalled hearing that no wizard had successfully made it into space before, but it still puzzled him to think that nobody had tried. Ssuccessful or not. How long had there been wizards? Surely someone had to have journaled or chronicled their attempts and logged their failures.
When Aaron asked if Syl wanted to help with his research, all doubt surrounding the subject faded from his mind. He was immediately overwhelmed with his passion for learning. "I'd LOVE to!" he said rising up from the ground excitedly while clutching at his satchel to ensure it was still properly sealed. "When do you want to start? I'm free right now! We could make for the library!?!" His gentle smile mixed with his star struck eyes a sign of his interest.

"Oh, definitely!" Aaron agreed, relieved that Sylvain wasn't upset about his instinctive reaction to protect his broom. "Once you're feeling confident, you can definitely try it out!" Aaron nodded along with his words, wanting the other boy to feel like he really meant them, because he did. It would be exciting to have someone else ride it and really appreciate the broom. He knew his teammates would, but some of them had even better brooms than a Moontrimmer, so they probably wouldn't be all that impressed.
"Really?!" Aaron said incredulously, when Sylvain commented on space. Did wizards really think space was the "final frontier"? Although Aaron didn't know what the expression really meant, he figured from the context clues that it was a good thing - that they were talking about space impressively. Oh- and there was the fact that he didn't know if Sylvain was from a wizard family or a muggle family. He should probably ask that, but that train of thought was immediately intercepted by the idea of asking Sylvain to be his research partner.
The Ravenclaw boy's face seemed to light up when Aaron asked for his help, and it put a huge smile on Aaron's face. He had chosen his partner-in-crime wisely, it seemed! And Sylvain's sudden burst of energy was absolutely infectious. "Yeah, let's go! Do you think they'll let me bring my broom into the library? Are there rules against it?" Aaron asked these questions, and loads more, as they left the training pitch together, their destination of the library set in stone.
