A New Find

Hogwarts, nestled in the Scottish Highlands, was home to lots of wonderful vegetation. For a girl like Alina, who favored both Herbology and Potions, and one day hoped to study to be a healer, it was a wonderful place to explore what nature had to offer.
Her love of the outdoors began at a young age. Her family had a beautiful large elaborate garden back in France where her and her identical twin sister Bella could run through. As she grew older, she learned more about the names of the plants around her and how to correctly identify them.
After moving from France to England, she had a governess that would get the girls outside every day, no matter the weather. There wasn't bad weather, only poor choice in clothing. She got to explore more of nature's greatness, running through meadows, exploring woodlands, climbing trees. She breathed it all in and took whatever the weather provided, whether it was raindrops or sunshine upon her face.
This particular afternoon she was walking around the grounds, her head not up looking for a friend who might be out but rather down at the grass before her. She got to the edge of a small grove of trees where a bit of pink color caught her attention. She knelt down to get a closer look and saw that it was Twinflower. It got its name from the twin like nature of the plant parts: the pink to white bell-like flowers that are born in pairs. Her former governess Juliette used to sometimes playfully refer to her and Bella as her "little twinflowers (petite fleurs jumelles)."
Alina got out her bag, pulled out some of her painting supplies, and made herself comfortable before popping a lemon drop into her mouth and beginning to make a new entry into her bounded watercolor book of vegetation she found at Hogwarts. This was a new find for her.

A New Find
After her clash with the Slytherin girl, Haley wanted to get out of the castle as soon as possible. As she had done before, she saw the sun through the window again and wanted to get out, lay down in the nearest meadow and just take a breath.
Haley had felt close to nature ever since she can remember. She loved to interact with all kinds of plants - magical or not - or just lying in the fresh air on the meadow and breathing in the smells around her.
This...this is all she wanted. With her first step into this castle she knew she was at home. But the beginning was not at all how she imagined it. She hoped to make new friends, but instead, she made her first enemy today.
While she was still angry inside and cursing softly, she suddenly realized that she was now facing closure. She felt the warm sunrays on her skin and she felt better immediately. She took a few deep breaths and closed her eyes.
She immediately felt a little better. Haley strolled across the courtyard and saw a grove of trees, that's where it tooks her. There she wanted to enjoy the peace and quiet.
The closer she came, she realized that a girl was sitting there. She could not see what she was doing, Haley only recognized a blond head from behind.
When Haley stood almost directly behind the girl, she recognized a block in her lap. She recognized directly what she was painting - it was a twin flower - and it looked incredibly beautiful.
Before Haley could think about it, it was already bubbling out of her mouth "Wow, it looks crazy beautiful!"

A New Find

Alina liked to write poetry when the mood struck her, but she never wanted anyone to actually read her words. She had been dabbling in painting since last year, but she didn't want anyone to see what she painted. So when a voice behind her said anything at all, she paused, but then she realized it was a compliment.
She took a moment to look at the work before her and smiled some. Yeah, it wasn't half bad. "Thanks, I'm still learning and practicing," she said and glanced up. "It's a twin flower. They're found all over but they're pretty rare here in the Scottish Highlands," she said and then laughed. "...You probably meant the flower, not the painting. Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself there." She had taken the compliment to be towards her art.
"A lot of people overlook them," she said of the small delicate flower. "But they're pretty and they smell wonderful," she moved aside so the girl could come closer and take in the fragrance of the flower if she wanted.
She didn't recognize the girl, but that was somewhat common around this school. With students sorted into one of four houses it could be difficult making friends who didn't share your table in the Great Hall or the Common Room or classes. Still, that didn't mean it was impossible. She had a couple of friends who were in Slytherin and two of her best friends were in Gryffindor. She smiled kindly to the girl.
"I'm Alina. Alina Rosier."

"Hi Alina, I am Haley. And no, the compliment was not for the flower, well ... I mean both are very beautiful." She smiled at her insecurely.
Haley assumed that Alina moved a little to the side and so she knelt down and took a deep breath from the flower. She already knew the smell and the corners of her mouth curled up into a broad smile.
"I always liked the twin flowers", like so many others Haley thought and had to smile. She continued, "I just think the nature of the plant parts is simply wonderful, as if each one had its perfect counterpart by its side."
But Haley didn't want to bore her new acquaintance with her thoughts, she sat down next to her and was at first unsure if she was even happy about company but since she didn't react, Haley assumed it would be okay.
She wanted to start a conversation with her after this day had not started well. But her head was suddenly empty, what should she talk to her about? And out of her mouth came "What house are you in?" At the same moment Haley was incredibly annoyed about her stupidity.
The yellow color on her robe had already told her, she was in Hufflepuff.

"Hufflepuff. The land of sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows," she joked with a friendly smile. "Actually, I dont have any lollipops but I do have lemon drops and you're welcome to some," she held out her bag.
She placed another one into her mouth. In her world, there was never a wrong time for a lemon drop or lemon anything. She loved the flavor.
"But I guess I shouldn't be placing my house into the stereotype. We badgers are pretty dang awesome as well, if you ask me." She looked to the girl and smiled a little, trying not to fall into a stereotype here herself with her thinking. Her friend Rose Moon, a Gryffindor, had that bright red hair. Lizzie Callaghan had that bright red hair too and was also a Gryffindor, and here this girl Haley, sat next to her with her red hair and Gryffindor robes. There was Alexa Mackenzie and Crystal Jagger, two girls in Hufflepuff with the same hair color, so it wasn't always the way.
"First year? Congratulations on making Gryffindor. I hear it's a good house to be in. One of my best friends is there, and my boyfriend."
Alina got along well with those from all the houses really with one exception - Ravenclaw. She wasn't entirely quite sure why but they just didn't ever seem to mix very well together. Maybe the Ravenclaws thought her stupid or maybe she was jealous at their aptitude for learning.

A New Find

Haley was surprised how friendly Alina was and felt comfortable around her. She accepted her offer, wordlessly took a lemon drop from her outstretched hand and nodded thankfully to her while she listened to her words.
"Oh cool, what are the names of your friends from Gryffindor?" she asked curiously. She could hardly believe that she already knew them, since she could only remember two names from the previous evening, but she was still interested.
"Thanks , I also think Gryffindor is the right house," she now spoke somewhat more quietly and skeptically to herself than to Alina. She looked up and noticed the astonished look. "Well, I am very happy about the decision! Really! Only, everyone I met knew directly which house he wanted to go to. Often it was the same ones where their parents were, but with me it was just different. My mother was in Ravenclaw but I knew very early that I would not see myself there. I can't explain why exactly, but I always had a feeling" she said somewhat shyly. She didn't want to appear strange to her new acquaintance.
She decided to stop talking about her months of indecision and changed the subject.
"Oh, look only over there, an amaranth they are also called foxtail. I love the purple flowers. Most people hardly know them as plants anymore, but rather find them in their food - they are an excellent source of protein."

"Rose Moon, she's one of my best friends. She's a second year like me. My other friend..." she paused because that didn't sound right now that they had a title so she corrected herself, "my boyfriend is Logan Zarcovich, he's a first year." She really didn't mind the age gap because it really wasn't much of one so she didn't hold that as anything to get in the way of things.
"Two really great people. I'm sure you are, too," she smiled. The girl stating how she was glad to be in Gryffindor brought Alina memories of her sorting ceremony. "I was so upset when I was placed in Hufflepuff. I thought once my father found out, he would be irate...disown own me, make me leave school, not allow me to come back - I didn't really know what would happen. So I just didn't tell him. I kinda let him believe I was in Slytherin since that's just what was expected of me and my twin sister Bella. But me and Hufflepuff...we were meant to be," she smiled.
"And my father was okay with it. Apparently he was originally to be sorted into Hufflepuff but the Sorting Hat finally defaulted to Slytherin. He always felt rather out of place."
"Anyways, I'm glad you're not a Ravenclaw. Me and Ravenclaws don't really work together for some reason," and she wasn't quite sure why. Alina was a super nice girl who loved to help people but she just clashed with every Ravenclaw she knew. She either ended up losing her temper over her studies and them not able to help her and threw books at them or apparently disrupted their studying until they physically harmed her - it was a very complicated relationship, this Hufflepuff and those Ravenclaws.

A New Find
"The names don't mean anything to me yet, but sooner or later I'm sure I'll get to know them too,. Thanks, that's very sweet of you." Haley smiled.
Haley was surprised at first but was happy that her new friend - could she already call her a friend? She asked herself briefly but she had a good feeling, she knew they would be good friends someday - that her new friend was talking so openly about her worries at the ceremony. "I am really sorry that you didn't dare to tell your father and were afraid that he might be disappointed. But I'm even more pleased that you were able to clear this up after all! "
Haley knew this fear "When my parents first asked me which house I wanted to come to, I was totally afraid to tell them. I assumed that my mother expected me to come to Ravenclaw too" She remembered that moment well and felt the nervousness in her body as if it had just happened. Before she lost herself in her thoughts, she kept saying "As you already know, I never felt connected with Ravenclaw. I am also very happy to have landed in Gryffindor, but that was not my only wish. I stood between two houses I wanted to go to until the very end. One was, obviously, Gryffindor and the other Slytherin." She was afraid of the reaction she might get to this strange statement, so Haley promptly continued, "I know, a pretty strange combination. No one could understand that I could be attracted to both houses at the same time. But that's the way it was." Haley thought about how incredible wizards and witches came out of both houses and she had to smile, secretly she knew exactly why, but she never met anybody who could really understand that.
Suddenly her encounter with the Slytherin girl came to her mind and anger rose up in her. "But I'm not so sure anymore if Slytherin was really the right thing for me. I had an incredibly stupid encounter with a Slytherin girl today and she was so rude and mean...Are all Slytherins like that?" Haley looked at Alina insecurely and noticed how much she was babbling and hoping she wouldn't hold it against her.

"No, I don't think they're all like that. My twin sister, she decided to go to Beauxbatons now, but she wasn't awful when she was in Slytherin. Granted...I do think it...." she paused to try to find her words, "I do think it changed her, or rather...set us on separate paths."
Alina had thought about this many times and even tried to bring it up to her twin but she never knew how to correctly verbalize it. "I think Bella and I come from a kind of background that can lead us to be very...on our high horse? And Bella took hold of all things Slytherin and thought she was in the best house with the best of everything and just got very selfish and self centered. Then there was me who got in Hufflepuff and I don't know, it helped me become more giving to others?"
I"'m not saying all Slytherins are bad by any means, but I think they can just sort of be swayed in a way that is self serving. Like the world owes them something."
"I mean last year, I had these two Ravenclaw girls hi-" she stopped, not really wanting to reveal that she got beat up by the two upperclassmen, " - I had these two Ravenclaw girls not be so nice to me." Haley seemed like a pretty smart girl and could figure it out without her directly stating it. "I thought I was okay and it was nothing but I've got this blood disorder where a little cut and I just keep bleeding, I don't stop. Well I was working on a group project with a Slytherin and I wanted to get the project done and be a contributing partner. He's the one that insisted I got to the Hospital Wing and saw to it I did. I'd like to think we're friends but I don't think he thinks of me as a friend," she shrugged. "I'd still do what I could to help him if he'd ever need it though. He's my friend even if I'm not his."
"So what do you think of the castle? Need help finding anywhere. I've been told I'm a decent tour guide."

A New Find
Haley remarked to Alina how much she was affected by the fact that she and her twin sister had grown apart. She felt a small pain spreading in her chest. Haley had always been very sensitive and often felt with her fellow men.
It hurt her even more that she had such a terrible experience with the Ravenclaws. She did not say it, but Haley understood directly what had happened. No one has the right to treat others like that, whether they like each other or not. Haley got really angry - why would you want to hurt someone on purpose? She did not understand this behavior. "I wish I could have been there." Haley got scared of herself when she heard the anger in her voice "Don't get me wrong, I'm not for violence or anything like that, but if someone is done wrong, I will defend that person" Haley was very hopeful that Alina didn't get her wrong, but Haley would do anything for her friends, even if it means to mess with two Ravenclaw girls.
"I'm sorry that you and your sister grew apart and she changed because of Slytherin but I like to believe that everything happens for a reason and in the end it often turns out differently than expected. But the more happy I am about the fact that there are good souls in Slytherin. I'm sure the boy sees you as a friend of sorts, at least he must have some kind of sympathy for you, otherwise it wouldn't have been so important to him that you really go to the hospital, would it? Maybe a good friendship will develop out of this," Haley smiled at her.
"Was that an offer? If so, I would love to accept it! I still get lost a lot here at Hogwarts..." She turned around and looked at the incredible castle, she loved it. She loved her new home so much, she could not imagine it better.
