Howard couldn’t help himself but to repeatedly look over his shoulder as the pair spoke softly. The subject matter at hand was not something they should be speaking about in the open and fortunately for them, Opeila would recommend taking the conversation somewhere more private. “Good idea.” Howard agreed. Spotting a nearby door, the Dhampir would peek in through the glass and to his relief the space was empty. “In here, come quick.” He said as he beckoned her with a wave of the hand.

After the young witch entered the empty classroom, Howard would check to make sure the coast was clear before closing the door quietly. The temporarily abandoned space should give them some privacy for a short while. His red eyes would drift back down towards her ankle as he thought over her words. In typical Slytherin form, Opeila was smart enough to deduce that he knew more than he let on and used that to barter for information. At this point there was no point in being secretive or trying to threaten the information out of her. Yes, it would be one more that would know of his involvement, but he needed to move fast and another fight would only draw more attention. Best to play nice this time.

“Yes. Well, at least I think I know what it is.” Howard began as his eyes returned to meet hers. “It was the darkness that gave those marks...or scars?” He asked, unsure of exactly what was going on with her body.

Hesitantly Opeila followed the Hufflepuff. If she didn't learn to hide her feelings behind a straight face the hard way over summer, there would be a whole mixture on her face. Discomfort, tension, confusion, suspicion. Amongst a few more. Fear maybe?
But the opportunity to speak with someone else, who maybe even knew an entirely different aspect of the story that Opeila only had pieces of, was too tempting.
She entered the classroom and put her bag on one of the tables. If they were going to talk for longer, she wouldn't carry that heavy thing on her shoulder the whole time.

Her eyes lit up for a moment when he said that he knew what it was. Did he also know where it came from?
"Let's do this in turns. I answer one of your questions, you one of mine. And then you get to ask another." Opeila was willing to share what she knew and did at this point. But only if Howard did the same.

"There was an attack on house Slytherin last February. Noises in the middle of the night, that only two students could hear, a boy and a girl. Most of us stayed reasonable and tried to convince some crazy people to not open the door, but one went on anyway and opened the door. A minute after, we were attacked by spiders. Not normal spiders, but like... I don't know. They seemed to grow in the dark. Their bites made our skin turn black and it hurt like hell."

She didn't mention the experiments with Selim Mainly because the thread is not done yet and thereby I don't know the results.
"My turn.", she said. Time to be careful. Last time she asked too far, she endet up thrown into the lake by Thomas Lestrange.
"I remember you from the announcement last year. Where they told us we had to go home over summer. I saw you talk to something in your hand when you ran out. Until now I thought it might have been some talisman with sentimental value or something like that, now I am not so sure anymore. When people are involved in this, I learned that... odd behaviour can very well be connected to... yeah this, whatever this is. What was it you spoke to? Or is it a who?", she added. How are you involved?

“Fair enough.” Howard agreed to Opeila’s bargain. It would be an exchange of information, tit for tat as she demanded something in return. It was a situation that he wasn’t really accustomed to, but time was of the essence and if he used his normal tactics he risked leaving with nothing. Often Howard would have resorted to using his intimidating presence or the threat of violence to squeeze out the information that he wanted, but it didn’t work every time. If Opeila stood her ground or fled, he risked not being able to find another that was willing to speak of it and now was not the time for many people to know his intentions. Only time would tell if speaking with her would bring him ruin, but she left him no choice.

Howard listened closely as she described the attack on the Slytherin dorm room. He had heard the whispers and the rumors, but having a first hand account was invaluable and provided him the proof that he needed. The spiders that she spoke of was something he had seen before. That night in the dungeons he had seen them in the twisting, crawling darkness. Among many other things. “They grew in the dark?” He repeated her words, just above a whisper. There was a detail there that Howard wasn’t quite bright enough to pick up on. “What did you all do? To fight them, I mean.” His eyes fell to the markings on her legs as she spoke. He wasn’t an expert in dark arts, but it seemed the injury was cursed. “May I ask, what are they doing to treat that? If I remember correctly, it must have been some time since you received you injuries.”

As Howard’s eyes drifted back to meet with Opeila’s it was clear that it was his turn to speak if he wanted anymore information. She asked about the stone that he used to wear around his neck. It would be obviously absent now if she looked. “It was given to me by the ones that control the darkness. The Hags.” His answer was short, but to the point. If she wanted more, she had to give more first.

It positively surprised the Slytherin that Howard didn't even attempt to protest, not to mention threatened her. Opeila had been very much expecting it.
He simply agreed, just like that. "I- good.", Opeila said and nodded. How was it, that this conversation starting peaceful was a surprising thing for her?

Howard repeated her statement that the spiders grew in the dark, before asking what they did to fight them. "I... I tried to fight off the one that attacked me with Periculum..." Red sparks. Like the ones she had tried to sent to the shadow that stabbed Victor. Opeila would turn a little pale, but catch herself quickly again. "B-But I missed. It was hard to aim with my legs feeling like someone set them on fire. I was too far off to notice what happened after a while. I don't know what it was that made them disappear, but I think it was the light. Professor Jensen walked in when half of the house was already down. They took us to the hospital wing. We have to take some gold potion every week. It seems to be slowing it down at least.", she explained.

Opeila's question, which she had thought would turn the topic around, stayed with darkness. Opeila hated darkness. She hated it so very much. The night gave her panic attack sometimes, often she just layed in her bed awake for hours, trying to shake off the fear that something would move, come for her and stab her. Like Victor. She woke up from dreams where she again held her shaking hands in front of her face, covered in blood this time. "Th- The hags control the darkness?"

Opeila only wispered the question, now the last colour disppeared from her face. Howard would get a glimpse of the trauma that Opeila had been dealing with ever since she saw Victor being killed.
The little girl's hands were now ice cold and trembling. "Th- They killed him then. They did kill him..." But why?
Despite her shaking, despite her face turning pale, the look in her eyes did not quite fit. There was horror, yes, but mostly an almost confused look. As if she had problems to understand what she just said. What it meant that she just said.

"Why are you involved with the hags?", she asked him, her voice now higher than before. She wanted to warn him. She would warn him. Or what did he know?
Was he on their side? Did he know of Victor's fate?
Now the confusion in her eyes would be replaced by blank fear, visible to anyone who cared to look.

Howard listened closely as Opeila told him of the night the Slytherin dorm room was attacked. He would simply nod from time to time, but his expression remained unchanged. Long ago he had lost the shock and terror that came with the subject. The fact that this school that was supposed to be a safe haven for learning and socialization now harbored a growing evil no longer had that effect on him. Howard knew what was to come. War was in their future and he was determined to come out on top and gain a foothold in this world as victor.

Two things stuck out to him as she spoke of the attack. First was the fact that the shadow creatures grew in the darkness and seemingly disappeared when confronted with light. It clicked in his head as he thought upon it. Every time he had seen the Hags and their living darkness it had been in the bowels of the castle where no natural light was present. It seemed that magical light could possibly have the same effect. The second was that when attacked by the darkness it did not equate to instant death and that the curse it left behind could still least be treated. Perhaps Howard stood a chance of survival in what was to come. Or perhaps not...

“Yes, I believe so.” He responded to her question of the Hags controlling the darkness. “It seems that way anyways. I’m not sure if it is their creation, an extent of their magic or if it occurs naturally and just answers their calls, but I know for sure it does their bidding.” That fact was the only reason he still lived. That night in the dungeons it had surrounded him, ready to tear him to pieces, but it was held at bay by the Hag. She had spared him...for a price.

“What!” Opeila’s words would break his stoic expression for just a moment as she spoke of death. “They killed who?..When?...Where?” The questions blurted out of his mouth as his mind began to race. How had he not heard of this? Had they exposed themselves just to snub someone out. It didn’t seem plausible for creatures that lurked in the shadows and worked through subterfuge. Whoever the target was must have been a serious threat to them. He had to know more, but it wasn’t his turn.

“I didn’t have a choice really.” Only a half truth. There was choice in everything but fear and a yearning for power were strong emotions. “I was taken to them by another. The Hags work in barter. You provide them a service and they pay a reward. Refusing them did not seem an option. I’m bound to them until my part it finished.”

Her eyes widened more and more when Howard explained what the shadows were, who controlled them. Why did they kill Victor? Opeila had been sure that the third year had been working for them. Or was Vladimir the one who held the main leashes? Or was he a tool himself and the powerful act nothing more than an act?
"But why would they kill him?", she wispered again.

It seemed that with that question she had caught the Hufflepuff off guard. His cool facade visibly cracked, when he blurted out with questions. "Summer Camp. Slytherin woke up with invitations in their hands, so we all made our way to the Quidditch stadium. They branded us. I had the number 2 on my shoulder. Victor Moore was there and tried to make us fight one another. He told Slytherin... a terrible thing I did, causing a prefect to go off like a maniac and attack me. Anyway, I managed to get out of there and then there was this shadow in the tent outside of the stadium... It missed me and then stabbed Victor. It was like... That knife thing... It came back out on the other side of his body, they stabbed him to death. And then one of the others destroyed it with a Lumos." Before it could kill me too.

Howard explained that he didn't have a choice. Someone else took him there and he couldn't refuse. Many questions popped up in Opeila's head, but she could only get out the ones that were unanswered for so long. "What is it they want, Howard? When will this madness end?"
She couldn't help the helplessness coming through with every word. Who took you there?

Howard started to internally question if this exchange of information was a mistake. Opeila’s eyes would widen as the fear of the topic physically shook her. Would this conversation be the tipping point that sent her to the staff, ready to spill her guts about what she knew and saw? Would his name be dropped if she did? It was risky and for a moment he considered threatening her into keeping her mouth shut, but pushing too hard on someone who was obviously in an unstable state could be disastrous. It would be best to try and calm her down.

“I have no idea why they would kill him.” The statement was still hard to make as it almost seemed unbelievable. People had been hurt, manipulated and forced into violent actions under the influence of the darkness, but to be killed? What on earth did that boy do? Why would they kill one of their own pawns? “I can only guess that he knew too much...or perhaps he was going to betray them. What I do know is that we need to tread lightly and keep quiet until we know more. That should keep us safe.” Howard’s attempt to calm her was weak at best, but it was all he could do for now.

Howard listened closely as it was Opeila’s turn to speak, but as she did it still did not become clear as why this Victor kid was marked for death. As terrible as her story was, a key bit of information would stick out. It was destroyed by Lumos. It seemed so obvious now that light would be the darkness’s weakness. The only time he had ever seen it was at night and in dimly lit places. He was tempted to ask right away, but again it was not his turn.

“There wants and desires...” Howard began to answer her question about what the Hags wanted. “...seem completely chaotic at times. I have no idea what their endgame is. All they seem to care about is spreading their influence.” His explanation would probably seem lacking but it was the only thing he truly knew about them. “I don’t know when this will all end. Not until they are destroyed I suppose.” Howard would end on that note in an attempt to mask his true intentions. The truth was that he was on the fence about the vile creatures. On one hand he was aware their presence was a constant danger, one that very well might threaten his life, but on the other he was still intoxicated by their powers. Every time he thought himself free of their influence they would drag him back in.

“I know this is all terrifying, but we have to be prepared for what is to come. You are sure is was the light from the Lumos that destroyed the darkness? Also, was Victor the only one targeted? Was he acting alone that day at the stadium?” Howard was desperate to find out why Victor had been killed. What mistake had he made that drove the darkness to murder?

Howard didn't know why they killed him. Why did a student have to die, was it all just pointless in the end? Did Victor die for nothing? To give people a sign maybe? Did he die for a reason? They had to give it a reason. Victor couldn't have died for nothing. It was wrong.
It was that thought, that enabled Opeila to gain back a bit of selfcontrol.

Howard guessed that Victor might have betrayed them. Betrayal... Opeila thought back to the day in the bathroom, where they interrogated Victor. Where he told them that Vladimir ratted him out, told the house where he and Marion were hiding. Was it possible that Victor betrayed Vladimir? But then, the fight club came from both of them. They had been working together that day. Or... Had they? "Victor looked strange on the day he died. His eyes were green, I'm sure they were not before. And his skin was weird. His face looked like... like... like there was a mask pulled over his face. Like his skin was a mask."

Howard didn't know what the hags wanted either. Spreading their influence... "Who took you to them?", Opeila asked. Was it Thomas? Or who else was involved?
The fourth year continued to ask about the shadow. "I was targeted too. I'm quite sure it was my own clumsiness that saved me then, that thing attacked me. After Victor died, I tried to cast Periculum at it, but... I guess I was nervous, the spell failed. And then someone casted Lumos and probably dsved my life with that. I can't tell 100%."

Howard shook his head from side to side as Opeila continued to give details about what had happened to poor Victor. It was still so hard to believe that a student had been killed, but there was no reason for her to lie and it certainly wasn’t past the capabilities of the darkness that had taken root at Hogwarts. His eyes would narrow as she spoke of Victor’s skin, especially when she spoke of a mask. “There was another student....I think his name was Ben. It happened a year or two back if I remember correctly. He had attacked some students and claimed that a mask was controlling him. Not like a traditional mask...like it turned invisible or something once placed on his face. I have no idea if that is what happened to Victor, but he could have been acting against his will. Was there anyone else there when this happened. Someone that could have been forcing him or controlling him?” There was no way to tell if the incidents were linked but anything was possible these days. It only highlighted how little they knew about what was going on.

As she asked of who took him to the Hags it would give him pause as he gave her a hard look. The deal had been an exchange of information but he worried about involving Erin in this conversation. She was volatile at the best of times and might see this as some sort of betrayal. In fact, she was so unbalanced he had no idea what she would really do, but whenever she was involved things tended to destabilize quickly. However, as he thought upon it he would come to conclusion that if any of them stood a chance they would have to work together in some way. Even if it was just passing information. “It was Erin Ryan that took me to them, but it was my own desire that made them seek me out. She was merely the guide.”

Howard would simply shake his head in the affirmative as she told him again about her attempt to fight off the darkness. Although she had failed another succeeded in casting Lumos. This was hardly the concrete evidence he was hoping for but it was a push in the right direction. “Makes sense I suppose. Using light to defeat the darkness. The thing I don’t understand is how the darkness was able to spread all the way to the summer camp. I’ve only ever seen it where the Hags reside.” This was something that truly stumped him. The Hags either left Hogwarts or someone else or something else was capable of controlling the darkness.

Opeila's eyes widened when he told her about the other boy, Ben, who claimed that a mask controlled him. "Ben... who? I don't think I know him, I guess he is in your year?" If she could speak to him... If he was willing to talk about any of this... If he was still at Hogwarts, which was quite unlikely, she realized... it would be great.

"Vladimir Athanatos. He's a fourth year Ravenclaw, who I believe to knows a lot more than anyone else. It seems that he was in the background as well, when they made us fight. The team that won would have gotten to fight Vladimir and then ask him a question." Opeila suddenly didn't like the sound of his first name with her voice. They were no friends. Vladimir hurt her friends and he made his friend cause chaos so her house would hurt her. They were not on first name level. To Opeila the ball, where he had been almost charming at first, didn't exist. The bracelet and his letters were locked in a little box and wrapped in clothes on the bottom of her trunk. Vladimir Athanatos meant nothing to her but danger.

"Can you tell me more about that mask? Is there any more info known?", she asked the fourth year. "Like, where does it come from, who controls it and how..."
What happened to Victor? It seemed to become a mystery more and more. Had he been controlled to say the things he said? Had he been unable to defend himself, unable to... fight it? The thought of Victor being a prisoner in his own body, helplessly watching his own death approaching, terrified Opeila. While she did not know the answer to those questions, she would certainly sleep more peacefully if she didn't imagine the worst.

Erin Ryan brought Howard to the hags. Another surprise. "Ryan? Wow, and there I thought she hated Thomas. Or- does she? If they are both involved..." Erin Ryan had been quite low on the list of people Opeila would have expected to need to watch more in the future. The girl always seemed to have a spark of madness that Opeila could not grasp nor understand, so she avoided her alltogether. "She... took you there?" Opeila remembered herself standing in the dungeon, calling out for someone who never answered. "Why?"

Did he have someone he wanted to bring back to life as well? The question was on the tip of her tongue and Opeila had to bite it back almost. Would you take me there?
The hags were certainly not dumb. Opeila was quite aware that she would probably pay for an attempt to play double agent with her life.
And still there was this temptation. Maybe they could get her grandmother back. Her mother.

"I know close to nothing about the darkness.", Opeila told Howard. "It just appeared..."
