The brightness of Mei's smile reassured Sylvain that his sympathetic actions were working to cheer the weepy eyed witch up. As she hesitantly opened the box, Syl could only watch and suppress his laughter so as not to shame the newest member of the flock. "Oh no," he would interject as the cocoa critter leapt from its box. "It's going to get away!"

A short rasp of air, paired with a look of disoriented confusion, gave Sylvain the feeling that Mei had never seen a chocolate frog before. "Don't stop now," he said as she lunged at it the first time, narrowly missing. Attempting to reassure her, Syl encouraged Mei to keep trying regardless of her inaccurate previous endeavor. "Keep at it, you'll catch it." Before the fleeing frog could aim to land unceremoniously in another student's plate, Mei managed to nab the chocolate escape artist. Sylvain looked Mei over intently. The empathetic wizard was not sure if he should laugh, or if she might be embarrassed, but when Mei began laughing at the situation it would not take very long for Sylvain to join in.

"You are correct!" Syl said after finally managing to gain control over his chuckling. "You should be a little more careful next time, but I wouldn't say you did poorly by any stretch of the imagination." His vigilant stare would pan around them, scanning the other students dining about them. It was clear that Mei and him had caused somewhat of a scene, but harmlessly enough they were among peers at this table. None of the Eagles would be too likely to tease them about it later.

A smile that could move the stars themselves found its way to Sylvain's face, only to be directed at Mei. "What card did you get?" A collector by nature, Sylvain dreamt of obtaining his first rare card, or even just seeing a card he hadn't heard of yet. Maybe Mei would get lucky and pull one, or maybe she would get really unlucky and pull the same exact card as himself. There was only one way to find out.

"Also, are you gonna eat that?" He said, pointing at the chocolate frog, now motionless and inert.

As soon as the chocolate frog leaped from the box Sylvain quickly said ."Oh no," Mei tried to catch it and Sylvain then added "It's going to get away!" Mei continued to try and catch the frog and when she missed the first catch Sylvain encouraged her "Don't stop now," He continued to encourage her with his kind words. He quickly said "Keep at it, you'll catch it." before the frog could jump onto the students plate Mei grabbed the frog. Sylvain looked over at Mei. By this time Mei was already laughing herself and Sylvain joined in with her. After Sylvain stopped laughing he said "You are correct!" "You should be a little more careful next time, but I wouldn't say you did poorly by any stretch of the imagination." Sylvain looked around at the students. Mei also looked around and her face flushed a bright shade of red at all the students looking at them. A smile found its way to Sylvain's face as he looked at Mei. He asked her "What card did you get?" Mei pulled out her card and looked at it. It was her first time so she was excited. "It's b11." She was smiling her cheeks still a bright shade of red from noticing the students. "Also, are you gonna eat that?" Sylvain added pointing to the now motionless frog resting in her hand. "Oh no, I'm not really hungry right now. Would you like it?" Mei made a gesture of handing him the frog.

"Oh, thanks!" Sylvain said as he monched on the chocolate frog. In between chews of milkey chocolate, Sylvain would sputter. "b11, nice, I have that one." After disappearing off to the side for a moment, he would dig through his satchel, producing a motley b11 that was missing one corner.

Seemingly proud of his thrift and scrounging, Sylvain spoke passionately. "I rescued it from the trash. Another student was tossing it out, all over a little ripped corner. I don't understand why really, the image is still perfectly visible." He slapped the rubbish common card onto the table so that Mei could look it over. Sure enough, his was nearly identical. If Mei was observant, it was clearer now that Sylvain collected garbage. If the witch was deductive, she might learn that Syl didn't mind getting a little dirty to save the things he found special.

Savoring the last bite, Sylvain pushed the remainder of the frog over to Mei to show that he was finished with it. "So uh," he paused awkwardly, only just now realizing he hadn't asked much about her yet. "You new to the wizarding world?"

He placed the common card onto the table so that Mei could look at it. Mei placed the card she had gotten right next to his. They were exactly the same, minus the missing corner. With the last bite of the chocolate frog, Sylvain pushed the remainder of the frog over to Mei to show that he was finished with it. "So uh," he paused kind of awkwardly. "You new to the wizarding world?" By this time Mei's cheeks had returned to their normal color. Mei looked up from comparing the cards. "Yeah, I am actually." Mei gave him a shy smile. "I don't really know much about being a witch at all. There's so many new faces. So many different classes. It's a bit overwhelming for me." Mei looked back down at the cards and then pushed Sylvain's card back towards him signaling she was finished looking at it. She then pocketed her own card and looked back up at him.

General The Ravenclaw Table 2020 -2021
Hiero found himself wide eyed and amazed as he made his way over to the Ravenclaw table. Students lined in blue indicated where he was supposed to go. He idly remember his mother always mentioning him to stop and consider the present. She always told him to never let a moment go by unappreciated, no matter how terrible it may feel. Every moment, once it happens, it never happens again. In some ways that's reassuring, in others it's terrifying. Regardless of that fact, Hiero took that particular moment to really let everything around him sink in. Part of him still couldn't believe all of this was real, like he'd wake up from his dream any second now. He had always desperately wanted an escape and here it was, served up to him on a plate of roast chicken, thick gravy, ears of corn...

The restlessness in his bones that came from wondering if this would all end soon was overshadowed by how amazing everything was. He had never seen so much at once. The bright lights, the colors, all of it. Amazed was pretty much the only emotion he could show at that moment. It slowed him down, immeasurably even as he made his way to the table. It was like he had been walking through molasses and forgot hot to walk after each step. You could see his brain working to remind him one foot after the other.

As he took his spot at the Ravenclaw table he eyed the others sitting there. He was always a quiet boy and didn't like to cause a disturbance but he was curious. He wanted to see what everyone was up to. What did the older students do? What were the other new students doing? Some seemed prepared, others seem disappointed, some seemed like this was just another day for them. How odd. Just another day. Would it ever be like that for Hiero? He could not picture it but that's perhaps why his mother always reminded him to enjoy each moment. One day it would be just another day for him and he would forget this moment of wonder. He would only be able to be sorted into Ravenclaw once, he might as well make the best of it.

Now if only he could speak up...

If you want to interact with Sylvain but aren't sure then....

Syl is kind and dependable. If you need his help, you might notice he has a sympathetic face and warm smile.

You can see him sitting at the table, patiently waiting for other students to file in as they get sorted to Ravenclaw.

He might be picking at his nails, or chewing at his sleeves while waiting for food.

With each sorting, regardless of house, Sylvain claps softly and just little bit.

Syl also occasionally pulls sweets from his satchel to share when other students recognize him and think to ask.

Sylvain also seems to be introducing the shyest of the first years to each other.
As Mei pocketed her own card, Sylvain contemplated the meaning behind her admission to being overwhelmed. As often as the boy thought, he'd often thought he had everything figured out until someone pointed out he was wrong. Perhaps this was a similar situation, and Mei needed someone to tell her to keep trying until she got it right. Or maybe she was just too nervous to reach out on her own. Either way, Sylvain wanted to empathize.

"There's nothing wrong with being a bit overwhelmed." He decided to say aloud after much deliberation. "In fact, I was in a place not to dissimilar from yours once." Those feelings were the reason the lad reached out to begin with. Sylvain wanted to bring some measure of stability and familiarity to his new classmate. Mei was someone who had the unfortunate responsibility of contending with the buzzing humdrum of Hogwarts all alone after all. "You shouldn't worry yourself with the burden of tomorrow. Instead you should focus on what is next." Sylvain's smile was small, but reassuring. His lips barely up-turned, his emotions coming out as calm and muted.

Turning to his left, as a boy whose brain surely worked at the speed of marmalade on a cold afternoon sat next to him, Sylvain had an idea. After shifting his attention back to Mei, Sylvain suggested a course of action while pointing to Heironymus Cortland discretely. Surely this one was at a loss for words and needed to make friends just as badly as Mei did. "Perhaps you should start here." He said very plainly so as not to cause confusion.

"Start with the people at this table that interest you, and explore until it gets overwhelming again." A flash of teeth would appear amidst his smirk, knowing all too well how experimenting with friendship had been like. Syl offered one last bit of support should the new student need it. "I'll be right here if you need my help."

Mei looked at him catching a flash of teeth appear amidst his smirk, "I'll be right here if you need my help." Mei's cheeks flushed to a darker shade of pink now noticable and she quickly shook her head. "I d-don't know h-how to start a c-conversation with s-someone." Mei was nervous and was stuttering. Mei looked down trying to hide her face. She felt hot and nervous. It was no doubt that Sylvain had already seen her pink face. She looked back up at him. "I'm really not used to this. I don't know if I can do it." Mei's face was still pink and she looked more nervous then ever. Mei had never really been the type to strike up a conversation with someone. Mei usually waited for someone to talk to her.

Hiero cautiously looked to his left when he caught onto the conversation being had between the other occupants at the table. The girl looked scared and the boy looked like had nothing at all to worry about. Or perhaps that was just Hiero projecting onto them both. He didn't know what to say to either of them, unsure if they were going to be kind to him or not. His past experiences in school had led him to believe that other students could be either or. Mostly they decided to land on not. However if a school could be so full of wonder, maybe the students were just better off as well.

Part of him wanted to reach out and comfort the obviously distressed girl, but he was a quiet one himself. He had no idea if he should actually talk to her or the other boy at all. What if he said something to upset them? It wasn't necessarily that they scared him too much but that he was just unsure of what he was supposed to do, and what was expect of him entirely. He wasn't the type that just... tried until something worked. he liked when something worked the first time he did it. Especially when it came to interacting with others. What if he did something that was weird?

The boy let out a small sigh before smiling softly but not speaking up just yet. Maybe he should just shake it off and introduce himself eventually, that would be best for everyone there. He just wasn't sure. Besides what if this all did turn out to be an elaborate prank? What if he just looked silly? Surely everyone here knew way more about the magical world than him. In his mind it seemed like a good idea to just keep his mouth shut until he learned enough to fit in.

Syl's smile still stoically stretched from cheek to cheek as Mei's face turned a deeper hue of pink. His face contorted for a moment as he imagined himself in her shoes. When he arrived to Hogwarts, raised by muggles, he had been nervous about meeting people as well. Unsure of whether to speak and uncertain of whether or not what they said would matter, Sylvain often hadn't spoken up at all. Honestly, none of those feelings had helped Sylvain up to this point. While he was able to understand the feeling itself the source of that fear was still unknown to him. It could have been fear. That was what it had to be. Fear. Being afraid to tell people who you were was what had created his isolated feelings.

Turning to the boy on his left without a word in response to Mei, Sylvain introduced himself first to set an example. "Hi there, Hieronymus is it?" The slender lad extended a hand to shake. It was easy to guess his name, as he had just been sorted after all. "M'name is Sylvain, but you can call me Syl, seeing as most everyone else does at this point." Whether Hiero took his hand and shook it or not, Sylvain would then politely gesture to Mei. "This is Mei, she's new to Hogwarts as well." A smirk tugged at one corner of his mouth as he smiled at the new Eagles.

"So you two, where are you from? London? Scotland?" Sylvain himself was from Inverie Scotland, a remote village unapproachable by land. Before that, not even his adoptive mothers knew where he had come from, as he simply washed up on the beach one day. If Mei and Hiero wanted to make friends and learn more about others, they were going to have to learn how to ask the questions that mattered to them. Sylvain had enough patience to teach them both how to, as long as they were resilient enough to keep trying.

He unwrapped another chocolate frog as they waited for dinner. Too much more chocolate and he might spoil his appetite.

Sylvain then turned to the boy on his left again without a word in response. He introduced himself first as to set an example for Mei. "Hi there, Hieronymus is it?" Sylvain extended his hand for Hieronymus. "M'name is Sylvain, but you can call me Syl, seeing as most everyone else does at this point." Sylvain then gestured to Mei. Her face had returned to its original color but was now a lighter shade of pink not too noticeable and she looked away. "This is Mei, she's new to Hogwarts as well." His smile then turned to a smirk as he looked at both Mei and Hieronymus. "So you two, where are you from? London? Scotland?" Sylvain asked. Mei looked up forcing herself to give a small smile. "I'm from Stratford, England. It's a p-pleasure to m-meet you." Mei was trying hard not to stutter but had obviously failed. Mei looked up at Hieronymus. Mei was still nervous and instead of saying anything afraid of stuttering again she chewed on her lip and stayed quiet. Mei looked over at Sylvain and saw that he was going to eat another chocolate frog. Mei thought If he continues to eat those he's going to lose his appetite. She shook her head at the thought and turned her attention back to the two boys sitting across from her. Mei looked happy as if she was finally having a good time. Mei was sure that with more time she would have plenty of friends and would fit right in.
