Katie chuckled as she saw the boy humble down the hallway. She was a first year as well and she'd been quite the nervous wreck when she first arrived in Hogwarts.
No worries! she replied, with a light laugh, After I was first sorted, I literally spewed food onto a second year in my house while laughing at a joke he made. she added, comfortingly, Thinking back on it, it wasn't that funny, but I was so nervous at the time it hadn't mattered. the second year hasn't liked her since, especially after she'd proceeded to share her views on blood supremacy. Well, not her views. Hee parents views which she'd later learned how messed up they truly were. She definitely regretted possessing hee parents' bigoted ideals on the second year, but she hasn't known any better. What a mess she'd acted like that very first day!!
Anyway, I'm Katie. Kate Palsorette. I'm a first year Slytherin who loves learning and books. Nice to meat you Alby. Katie said, extending a hand. Being cool definitely isn't my game, but I'm glad to meet you. Want to walk with me? she offered with a smile.
Katie could totally relate to Alby. He seemed nice, but nervous and they were both relatively new first years. She wondered what house he was in, but it didn't really matter to her. She may be in Slytherin, but she knew Hufflepuffs who were just as fun to be around as any Slytherin could ever be. She didn't know any Gryffindors our Ravenclaws yet, but she wouldn't mind becoming friends with one of them either. Katie could definitely admire the academic pride and focus of a Ravenclaw and the nerve to speak their mind and do slightly rule-breaking things that Gryffindors commonly possessed. Of course, Katie wished that Gryffindors took a few lessons from Slytherins on how not to get caught so much.

Alby shook her hand gracefully. "Oh yes of course, last names! Turner is mine. Nice to meet you too Kate" he pushes his scruffy hair back behind his ears and gives an odd bow that looks like he's pretending to vomit.
As if completely forgetting about the dropped books he says "Hell yes I'll walk with you.". He taps his feet together like a ballerina out of excitement. Only then does he look down and remind himself of the great mess of paper prevalent beneath his feet. "I have a feeling all of this won't be going anywhere anytime soon, I can probably swing by and clean it up later. It's not anything important" it really wasn't important. At least not in Alby's eyes, in Alby's eyes the only things of importance included a quill, paper and his dear mother's address.

Alby takes her hand abruptly and begins to walk away from the sordid mess that scatters the floor. He turns his head to greet her eyes.
"So? Books? Is there specific literature for wizards or do they read the same sorts of texts normal folk do? I must say I can't really picture a wizard indulging in Sci-Fi".
Alby was still curious about wizarding folk and continues to bombard Katie with questions.
"Are your parents wizards?"
"Are they Muggles?"
Alby's intrusive behaviour was made apparent to him as he spoke.
"Sorry I don't mean to pry. I'm just awfully curious"

Oh it's alright. Katie replied with a light laugh. She meant it. She could assume Alby was a muggle born based on his questions about wizarding culture.
I am unsure of what fiction books wizards might read as I prefer nonfiction books that teach me valuable skills and knowledge, but I've heard that Quidditch magazines are quite popular. I'm not one for Quidditch myself, but it is our only sport if you want to call it that. My parents are both pure-blooded wizards, and of the worst sort possible. I thought muggle borns were ACTUALLY less powerful than pure-blood wizards, until I came top Hogwarts and saw that that wasn't the case at all. Mother and father's bigoted, prejudiced ideas were the only problem there was. Katie continued. She hated the fact that she'd once believed them without question. Utter garbage they believed that's what! She still hasn't told them that she was not in alignment with them anymore, but she'd do that when they were no longer able to tell Katie what to do. Merlin her parents sucked. Were your parents supportive when they found out that you were a wizard? Sorry I'm sorta assuming that your muggle-born, though you asked questions about wizarding culture, so I figure you weren't raised with magic. Besides, I can't help but be curious about muggles after being raised a pure-blood. Is it true that muggle pictures don't move? And is it true that muggles have black mirrors that they keep in their purses all day and look at a random times? What's the purpose of those black mirrors? Can they even see anything in them if they are black? Are muggles still mostly Christian? I heard that their were witch burnings due to some muggle religion called Christianity before the statute of secrecy. It's it true that muggles wear fabric cages around their waist, stomach, and hips to have a thinner frame? Koresets I think they were called? And is it true that muggles went to the moon? I think they were called asstrannots right? she started ask ing rapid fire questions. Their was so much that she'd yet to learn about muggles because her parents had tried to instill a sense of narrow minded pure-bloods values, while blinding her to the rest of the world.

The questions flooded Alby's immature brain. Yet one distinct question caught his attention.
"Black mirrors? What in the world are you? OH! Please tell me you are not referring to mobile phones? You've never seen a mobile phone before? Bloody hell, hold that thought..." he reaches into the pocket of his robe and pulls out a flat black brick-like object. "It's for communication, like calling and messaging. See check this out... oh". He quickly realised that they didn't use electricity here at Hogwarts and over the past couple of nights his phone had completely died.
"Nevermind that!" he tucks the phone back into the pocket of his robe neatly.

"But my god you are curious... Yes our paintings don't move. The fact that they do here makes me feel insane. I must say I am not entirely aware of fashion, I used to look like a bum before coming here so can't really help you with Muggle fashion.".

Alby doesn't wish to talk about his parents. Somewhat of a sore subject. "Are your parents, uh how do I put this, are your parents dangerous? Not trying to be rude or anything but they sound a little bit one sided. I mean don't get me wrong, you full-blood wizards could beat me up any day of the week but they seem a tad violent from your antagonistic description". Alby paused in his tracks as if expecting to be slapped.

My parents, well I, they weren't very supportive of anything different of them. I learned quickly not to ask questions. I'm working on a plan right now to get different guardians. I know a girl who had auror parents in the Irish ministry, so I'm working with her to resolve my err situation. The British ministry is useless because of my parent's money. Let's not think on them though. she replied.
That's so cool though! About muggle culture I mean. I know next to nothing as my parents didn't, like I said, allow me to all questions on what they viewed as "filth". The only filth their was though was their views of course. So the black mirrors are more lime two way mirrors without magic? How does that work? Katie questioned. and I saw a lot of people with their black two way mirrors. Fones did you call them? How did so many people have them? In or world two way mirrors are super expensive and only super rich pure-bloods can afford them. Her parents had shared one between the two of them, but she'd never had a personal one and her parents had never let her use theirs. She'd never asked. Even her parents though, who had plenty of money, had shared a two way mirror because of the price.

"Parents, as much as they may suck and as much as you may want to just escape from their grasp, they're still family. No matter how much you try to get away they will always be in your shadow. I won't tell you to embrace that fact, just acknowledge it. Of course, they're just family by blood. Your real family includes the ones you hold most dear." Alby's eyes grow a tad watery.

"Whew" he sighs "That's enough serious talk from me. If I'm ever able to charge up this damn... what was it you said? Mirror? That's a good way of putting it honestly, it truly is reflective of the person that uses it. But if I ever manage to actually inject some electricity into the thing I'll make sure to give you a tour of it's uses. It can even take photos and videos." Alby's making a pretend frame with his fingers as if he's pretending to be some sort of director. His legs are hunched and he's biting down on his tongue. He's focused on Katie, measuring how best to take a photo of her. "You're quite photogenic actually, I think you'd look great as a photo model."

Photogenetic? Is that where you have the genes to be a good photographer? I know it's genes and not jeans shutter someone corrected Mr, but I'm unsure if this photo gene. Wait! How can you tell? Is it obvious? Is it a bad thing? Does it mean I should be a photographer? Katie asked rapidly. She'd never heard of this photo gene. She knew now what muggles meant when they said genes: that genes controlled hour you looked and your characteristics or something and not jeans that you wear after a new friend had corrected her, but She hadn't known about the photo taking gene. I thought genes only control appearance. Do I have some sort of mutation or illness? Is it a bad thing? Katie was worried and her mind had stayed running through all possible situations and all of them seemed equally frightening.
Alby? she asked, looking up, and more than worried. What could this mean for her? Was being photogenetic a bad thing? Would people not want to be around her if they knew? Was she like a second class citizen? Katie's panic kept increasing the more she thought about all the different possibilities! Whatever was she going to do?

"Woah! Don't get so worked up over it dude. It's a compliment. Photogenic means that you're made for the camera, it means you'd look good in a photo." Alby didn't really like saying a compliment twice. He found it embarrassing to compliment someone in the first place let alone do it twice. "It's not right to condemn someone because of their genetics. History has done that one too many times and it always ends in horror.".

Alby looks Katie in the eyes "Don't even sweat it. There's more than just crummy genetics that make up a person". Alby raises a finger and then points it at himself "You want to see some bad genes? You're looking at them. I may appear stocky but I could probably only run for 5 seconds before I died from over-exhaustion. I am the embodiment of imperfection and goddamn am I proud of it. That's where our quirks hide, in our imperfections. ". Alby attempts to do a small twirl on the spot but fails miserably falling to the ground. He springs back up quickly and opens his loose jaw allowing words to fly "We should go do something fun. All this serious talk is going to be the death of me".

Oh. Katie blushed as she realized that "photogenic" wasn't a bad thing. She really hasn't the first clue about muggles, did she. Ah well. It wasn't like it was her fault. She'd always wanted to learn mouse about them, but alas couldn't do that with parents like hers. Alright. I'm down for something fun too. Serious talk is only good for so long after all. she replied with a light smile. She pondered what the could do together for a moment. Katie didn't like Quidditch, Alby (probably) wouldn't like reading, ah! Katie felt an idea come to get in an instant. Brilliant! Why hasn't she thought of this before? I know just the thing! It's around noon, I'm hungry, the weather is beautiful outside... Katie started, leading Alby on to guess what she could be thinking or planning. We should have a picnic by the Great Lake! I can sneak some food from the Great hall if we get their early,and then we can sneak out to have a picnic while chatting! Katie exclaimed, eyes glistening Do you have any dietary restrictions? Here, tell me on the way to the Great Hall. I think we'll be able to make it before everyone else, to snag some food and exit before everyone else pours in. Katie added. How does that sound? she asked eagerly, with a slight, but barely noticing bounce I her step now.
