Flash wasn’t known for being great at stepping out of the way of things, but he was at least adept on a broom. He had been allowed to fly them around the estate since he was little, so it was a well-practiced skill. Why he was being targeted by so many people, however, he couldn’t say. By observation alone, it seemed the prefects had grouped together. A good plan, though it also made them a force to take care of. They were already mostly older and more skilled than the rest of them, so as a group they were even more threatening.

There was one flash of light that hit him, spewing forth from Pericles’ wand before it was launched from his hand by one of the girls… It then dawned on Flash where he recognized her, she had attended the AURA meeting only a few days ago, May Moonstar. Though they could hardly call each other friends, maybe not even acquaintances, he was grateful she saw fit to also focus on the prefect threat. Flash waved at her as thanks, though she received a devastating attack only moments later, holding onto her broom still with an iron grip.

At first, Flash thought perhaps Pericles’ spell had been a dud, feeling no pain beyond some tingling, but trying to move showed the actual effect. Terribly, horribly slow. He might as well be limping. Seeing as he was trapped on the broom, he was going to have a very difficult time dodging as well as he had the last round.

Luckily for Flash, his own target had been the victim of her own design. Whether it had anything to do with the casting of his spell (it didn’t), she was blown off her broom in such a way that her grip on her broom failed her. Honestly, Flash felt a bit sorry for her, it was never great having a game end just as it started. Well, perhaps the point of Aurelia mentioning her previous win had been to put the pressure on. Maybe it was the best possible outcome, at least for everyone but her.

Though more imminently, his searching eyes caught something more important than the game. Alan had cast the blindfolding charm on Willow. He must not have known... ever since the fire in the Hufflepuff commons, Willow had been terrified of the dark. She needed someone beside her when she went to bed, panicked at the ball when the lights went out. She was blind, up in the air with no bearings. He needed to be her light, the game could wait.

”Willow I’m right here!” Flash would call out in hopes of calming her down. ”I’m coming over to you!”

Of course, he was very slow. Hopefully he could relieve her of the darkness before it had a chance to cause her too much duress.

Oh no.

May knew this sensation to well. Oh my god. I'm petrified.

The girl stayed steadily on her broom, but then, she saw Ruby Cazares's face. Shit, no!

May knew perfectly well when this girl was going to trouble her, especially when, well...it was a competition. a stupid game May shouldn't be had gotten into in the first place. May barely heard the words Flipendo before she was hit full-on in the stomach, but May applied extra Strenght into her broom, thought she couldn't move because of being petrified, and stayed on her ground (or on her air anyways.).

Grateful, May stayed in the air, unable to move for two full rounds. Hopefully, nobody would decide to shoot her off her own broom when she was unable to move. She didn't know if it was even possible.

May looked at Xailah Alpatrum, the girl that looked like a vampire or a feline, and immediately knew that she had only shooter the spell because it was a small in the air game. But Ruby was the real problem. May would have to be careful around the third year Slytherin, for the girl was full of venomous evil, and was sure to hunt May down till the end. May was glad that she didn't have any backup to help .

But May felt calmer when she saw that Flash Holmwood had waved at her for some reason. She had met him in the AURA meeting, and she had always sensed that he was very calm, to be a Slytherin, a virtue May never actually had. Again, something she was grateful for.

Willow hadn't always been afraid of the dark.

It had been a new, recent, horrifying development in her life. One that she didn't expect to take hold of her here. Her spell failed to go off, maybe for the better as she questioned going after someone that would probably be her ally right off the get go. She only hoped he hadn't seen her attempt to cast. Her eyes just began to look around at the other spells being slung about the pitch when suddenly she couldn't see.

She thought maybe she had blinked too long for some reason, but as she attempted to clear her eyes she realized there was something blocking them. Her heart started to race as she realized what was happening. The last two times she had been submerged into darkness she ended up covered in blood and eventually in the hospital wing at some point of the night. This was supposed to be fun, this was supposed to be a good time. Was this a spell? When were they supposed to learn this? What class? She shook her head to try and get rid of whatever was blocking her vision. Her broom had completely halted in moving.

"No, no, no, no, no. Not again. Not again. Not again." Her voice was frantic and pained. Panic started to bubble and overflow, and her hands came up to claw at her face to try and pull off whatever was on her face. A blindfold? She was scratching her face in the process. Flash's voice rang out through the field saying that he was coming to help her. "Flash, please. It's happening again. I don't want to be hurt. I don't want this. I don't want it." Darkness, damned darkness. Anything could be coming for her, what if this wasn't a spell from one of them? What if it was something else. Darkness always seemed to be the precursor for pain and suffering. She couldn't see so how was she supposed to know if other people were panicking.

Instead she was left to cry, panic, and scramble to see again.

Unsettling Aura Activated
Things happened quickly. There were sparks, the game was on. Incantations were called, spells were flung. A flash... Pain… Then, that feeling like when you’re falling in a dream. Though this wasn't a dream. As if falling in slow motion, River’s mind had the time to manage to get a grip on what had happened.
Ah, well, it was as she’d expected all this time. Her demise would be by the hand of none other than herself. The worst kind of betrayal is the one you turn upon yourself. You can only rely on yourself in the world, and as soon as the trust you have to yourself is gone, what could you possibly have left?
Though, of course this was not a chosen betrayal. No, this was simply a result of her mother's incompetence passed down to her. Or perhaps not. Who would know. Perhaps that was just what she wanted to tell herself to feel like it was not her fault, as she felt the gravity pull her towards the solid ground beneath them. She never truly felt as though all the training and effort she’d put into perfecting her magic had actually become… perfect, yet.
It was only a game, it was not her quick elimination that would bother her. She couldn’t care less whether she won this game or not. The thing that would be the thorn in her side was the way she’d gone down.
She couldn’t help but feel the deep sting of self-disappointment as her mind grasped what had happened and as her hands no longer grasped her broom she closed her eyes and accepted her downfall, preparing for the painful hit of the ground.
What she would not notice as her mind was too preoccupied with plummeting and criticizing her own abilities, was the familiar boy heading straight for her. Leaving his lost wand behind as he dove for her. Perhaps he would be the knight in shining armour this day.
Action: Plummet to the ground.

The talk prior to the game, would certainly give the metamorph a lot to think about. Worry- a very common feeling, would begin to surface. Xailah was very worried about Ruby. She was also worried about giving Pericles a poor answer to his Quidditch dilemma- and his invitation to his errand. She felt utterly useless, for not further addressing either situation. There was no doubt, that the metamorphs pondering would end up distracting her from the game, later on. Perhaps she could revisit the issues after the game, once the prefects gathered to say their goodbyes- assuming they would even do that. Xailah nodded quietly to herself. Yes. That was going to have to do for the time being- because right now, she had a game to win, and allies to look out for.

The spells cast by Xailah, and Ruby, would hit their target. May. The awkward little badger, that had chosen to target their friend. It was a poor decision on Mays part. Both serpent and lioness, were loyal to their bird. Both were determined to hinder the Hufflepuff in some way. While Xailah taunted the child, Ruby aimed to hurt the girl. A satisfied hiss, escaped Xailahs lips; as she watched a white light leave the tip of her chestnut wand. Ruby would almost succeed with her goal of removing May from her broom. But May was lucky. Her strong grip would not allow her to fall. Xailah was shocked to see the girl still on her broom, and surprised by Ruby's ferocity. "Good ssshot, Ruby." The cub shot a devilish smile towards the serpent. A more malicious grin was then extended to May. Finish her. "Would you like to do the honors?" She asked Ruby. Should Ruby decide to try her hand at knocking the girl off her broom a second time, Xailah would seek out a new target.

In her search for a new plaything, Xailah would spy her ally River. She would see a blueish light leave Rivers wand- the wrong end of her wand, and make contact with her torso. "Damn it." Damn it. The prefect group had lost one of their allies. River had fallen- and by her own hand. Her Flipendo, which had been aimed at Flash, backfired. River would tumble from her Cleasnsweep. "We lost River." Xailah murmured, with a slightly solemn tone. It was a shame the girl was to be eliminated so soon. Xailah had been looking forward to teaming with the ginger. As Pericles dove to catch the flightless bird, Xailah would notice that his wand was no longer with him. Ah. Great. "Pericles lost his wand too." She called up to Ruby. Well, this wasn't how she imagined the game playing out, for the prefect group. Xailah was now faced with a couple of choices. She could seek out a player to eliminate, or she could fetch the Ravenclaws aspen wand. She weighed both options, and tried to calculate the outcomes. After a brief internal debate, the metamorph would choose the latter course of action- figuring that the sooner she got the wand to the eaglet, the less likely he would become a target for other players. The small group didn't need to lose another ally.

Pericles looked at her—really looked, holding her gaze pointedly—and it made his next words more impactful. “As long as one of us is here, you needn't ever play on your own.” Eyes widened ever so slightly… in fear. She wasn't sure she could keep this up. The emotional distancing, it was hurting her. While she was still physically with the group, it was clear that something inside her wasn't the way it had been when they met up with her last year. She was far warier, didn't want to be hurt and vulnerable, and she believed that friendship would cause those weaknesses. Yet for a moment she allowed herself to hope. When the Ravenclaw told her she wouldn't be alone, she knew he meant it. He and Xailah always seemed so real to her, they were honest, which felt like it was becoming an increasingly rare trait among her peers.

Or maybe it was just a reflection of herself. Maybe her angry reaction to every new person she met was because she was the dishonest one, she was the cruel one, the one who couldn't even accept things when they were laid out in front of her. She cared about these friends, and that was why she had to do something to end it before they turned on her. Before they hurt her. The boy was gentle as he spoke of the game and invited them to an errand he would be running in a couple of days. “I'd love to come,” she said, and instantly berated herself. No, no, no! What are you doing? Stop it! She did want to go, she wanted to spend all the time she could with the Ravenclaw and the Gryffindor because she liked them, because when she was around them the loneliness was pushed to the side and the anger calmed slightly.

Why, why did they have to have come this far and cross from acquaintances to friends? She was certain that if they found out what she was really like, they would lose interest. Who wanted to be with a person who was angry all the time, who wished to hurt people to distract her from her own pain, whose own parents weren't proud of her? She was a loser and she was mean and she didn't have all the goodness and the traits of an exemplary student that a prefect should possess. Hell, she wasn't good enough even for a regular student. She shouldn't be here. The only way to save her the pain of watching them turn away from her whenever they found out one day was to reject them first, but she found herself unable to stomach that idea. Being unkind to strangers was one thing, but being unkind to friends would be much, much harder.

She couldn't do it. She wanted to lie to herself and say that she didn't care about them, but it was so obviously untrue that even she couldn't deny it. I want to just disappear. They won't like me, she told herself firmly. But no matter how much she tried to prepare herself for rejection, it hadn't come so far. She still continued to cling to the sliver of hope that lived on. Because if they didn't like her, why would they have been the ones to invite her, to smile at her, to form an alliance with her and show that they cared? Ruby aimed to hurt May, which surely seemed apparent. She cast and it hit, but the Hufflepuff managed to stay on her broom somehow. And Xailah was encouraging her, sending her a smile that wasn't kind to the younger girl, offering Ruby the chance to finish her.

“As a matter of fact, I would,” she commented with a nod and a toothy, sinister grin. “Flipendo.” Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't, but she would keep focusing on the girl until she went down. Xailah called to her, saying that River had been knocked off and Peri's wand was gone. “We can still turn this around,” she said firmly in an attempt to motivate her companion. And she believed it. The game was far from over, and as she watched the girl fly off—presumably to help Pericles—she hoped that they could pull it together and maybe even take the victory. If not, it didn't really matter. It was just a game, after all, but it was always nice to win. And there was still the topic she was pushing aside. What of these friendships that only seemed to grow stronger?

Was it possible that the other students could accept her when they found out how spiteful and vindictive she was? Xailah didn't seem taken aback by Ruby's rage towards May, which wasn't entirely what she had expected. At the Blossom Ball, the Gryffindor had been angry and lashed out at Breana, so maybe she could understand part of what Ruby was feeling? It was a possibility. And Pericles? The boy was sweet and gentle, and sometimes Ruby wondered if he even knew how to be mean to someone. Yet perhaps he knew that things weren't always black and white. He had remained friends with Xailah after she had had that outburst—although that could be due in part to the fact that they seemed closer than either of them were to Ruby. At the very least, they seemed to have known each other for a while… When Ruby had got into a duel at the end of last year, Pericles had had her back. But had he known that she was really the instigator? To an onlooker, it may have seemed like two fourth years were just ganging up on her without much of a reason besides being rebellious, but it ran far deeper than that. Brow creased with slight worry, she continued with the game. Focus on what's in front of you now, Ruby.

The person she targeted barely dodged out of the way of her spell. He seemed to be doing really well though. From what she could see, it seemed like he might have been successful in getting someone, though she was not sure who. Was he the one who did the disarming charm on someone or blindfolded Willow or...? She could not tell. Things were happening so quickly everywhere.

Deciding that the fourth years still had a better advantage in this, clearly by their superior arsenal of spells, she continued to attempt to level out the playing field a bit more. It was far nicer to try and attack someone who actually had the chance of defending themselves than a first year that had probably only just had their first lesson on flying. Geesh, were there any first years here right now? This game would be quite the introduction to Hogwarts if there was.

With one hand, she gripped her broom again, trying to keep herself balanced as she flew in for another shot. Raising her wand, she aimed it at the boy that she recognised from her year. He was the one who threw her pizza on the floor, if she recalled correctly, "Mimblewimble!" She called out again, this time hoping to actually hit. Though it did seem like the boy was fast!

He would park himself right in front of Cassandra, right in the spells trajectory. There was a chance the spell might fail, however, Alan was not lucky enough. It was partially Aurelia's fault which led to Cassandra's next choice of spell, Aurelia had skipped the briefing rules perhaps assuming that the members of her club would already be familiar with. Cassandra had definitely never experienced incendio herself nor would she know how devastating and traumatic it was to be on fire. She was lucky not to. Even then, Cassandra should never have used the spell. Cassandra would set her eyes on Eyre who was unfortunate enough, however, the path of her spell would be obstructed by the hero-complex, Alan Vanes. Soon, Alan Vanes would be lit on flames. Ruby would cast a flipendo at May's way yet again. The third year's spell casting was flawless and finding its mark on the girl's back. But the young hufflepuff was like a solid rock, unmoved at all my the spell.
The game was all going fine until the girl heard the incantation of the flame conjuring spell. Aurelia would whip her head around to find the culprit and would find her housemate and a purple-haired girl in what looked like an airborne tackle. For a moment, the unmistakable red would lap at the boy's clothing. It was obvious to who cast the spell. Aurelia would raise her voice, "Purple! Fire? Are you out of your mind? Out of the pitch now!"

Moving at a snail’s pace, Flash could barely cast his one spell before Willow was able to free herself from the blindfold. Still, she was calling to him, so he flew up to her side. Reaching out, he would put his hand on hers and squeeze it tightly, smiling for her newly recovered sight.

”I’ve got you, there’s nothing we can’t handle. Nothing.” Flash gave her words of affirmation meant specifically for her.

Willow was an extremely resilient person, he knew this wasn’t going to break her stride, so it was better to appeal to her confidence. Get her back to where she was enjoying herself, and attacking him. He wasn’t ruthlessly competitive enough to want anyone to get hurt, especially when so little was at stake.

A sentiment apparently not echoed by Cassandra, as they drew attention to themselves when using a dangerous, harmful spell at another student. Flash whipped his head around to see, as did a few others, as it seemed Alan had flown by to tank the hit for someone else. How noble.

It seemed the young snake had little regard for the consequences of their actions, or perhaps they just didn’t know how harmful the fire-making spell could be. Anyone who got a front row seat to the smell of Victor Moore’s burning flesh might have been reflexively cringing as Flash was. Either way, it seemed Aurelia wasn’t about to let the deed go unpunished.

”The older students.” Flash nodded to Willow before flying back off before their closeness made them a target.

Now back up to normal human speed, he needed to make some leeway. There had been no one knocked off their broom the previous round, so there was still a small group of older students to whittle away at. They were stronger, more practiced. As tempting as it would be to try to pick off a weaker contender, it was too much of a threat to leave as it was. Pericles is wandless… no, Xailah would...

Flash’s attention turned to Xailah. He wasn’t exactly on her good list to begin with, she had pretty much called him a stalker to his face. Flash had a... complicated relationship with authority. The prefects had to go.

Calming Presence: An aura of calm. Allies (defined at the START of an instance regardless of later betrayal) gain a 10% chance to auto-hit their chosen target. This does not stack.

The spell hit but didn't succeed in taking out her target. What a pity...

Her head whipped around when she heard the flame making spell. It was one she knew well and had been avoiding of late, in part due to the disaster that was the Blossom Ball. She had cast it a handful of times since then, but each time had made her stomach turn and filled her with panic. Her breathing quickened. A part of her was irritated that the other student had felt they were special enough to bend the rules. Was a dueling club that wasn't even legal until very recently not enough for them?

Scoffing slightly, she checked to make sure that neither Alan nor Eyre was actually seriously injured. Alan's flames lasted a matter of seconds, and she rather wondered why he would have taken that spell for someone that, to her knowledge at least, he hardly knew. It made her stomach turned as she remembered her own treatment of Eyre. She liked to believe that everyone was selfish deep down, but lately, it seemed that everyone was trying to prove her wrong on that count.

She heard Willow's panicking, but by the time she turned her attention that way, Willow seemed to have handled the issue. Flash seemed to also have dealt with the effects of the hex that had hit him, so she was free to turn her attention back to full-on murdering Scarlett.

She hadn't been targeted specifically by anyone, and the people that she considered allies for the purposes of this game seemed to be in decent shape, so she felt no guilt whatsoever for focusing so intently upon the younger girl. "Flipendo!" she said, her tone even and cold. Her eyes were wide and a bit crazed as she resolved not to do anything else until Scarlett was removed from the game.
