A Charming Costume
Another late day in mid September and Artemis was already tired of the workload that was piling up. But he knew that piled on homework meant that the students were acutally learning instead of finding themselves into trouble. And this year he hoped that there would be no balls or dances or anything of that nature that would require these students to go around casting fires at flammable objects. The last thing any of the professors needed was to rush into a burning area again to either put out fires and save children, or put out children who favored the color yellow. Really, you would think that the school board would require Hogwarts students to buy flame retardent robes from Madam Malkins instead of the normal ones that they were required to have now. Or just switch out the Hogwarts robe materials altogether and call it a day. Unfortunately, these school board members were just as silly as the parents who insisted on sending their kids back to this school for an education. They don't know what truly goes on behind these walls and to avoid paperwork and the possibility of being sued, the Headmaster doesn't exactly send notes homes to parents when thier children are injured.
Only when they happen to die a most unfortunate death.
Thankfully, there hasn't been a death at Hogwarts since the 90's so they were quite safe in that regard. But that didn't stop these kids from trying! Always fighting at some party or gathering, in house or opposite houses. It didn't matter. These tempermental children always had to raise their wands to attack each other. If Artemis had it his way, student's wands would be confiscated after every class and passed on to the next professor who had to teach them, if and only if the lesson even required a wand to be used in that class. It was tiresome saving these miscreants on a daily basis once school started. He prayed to whoever would listen to him that this year would prove to be different than the last two. He knew that a dance for Halloween or sometime in October was happening soon. A masquerade of sorts. He really hoped that nothing untoward happened at the party.
"I need a vacation," he muttered to himself as he sipped at his tea while grading the next assignment on his desk. And he planned to take one soon; a vacation. He needed some time to himself to decompress what happened over the summer as well as spend some time with his children.
The quiet alarm alerting him that someone was in his classroom broke the man out of his thoughts about vacations and had Artemis sighing. A small knock at his office door had the man heaving a heavier sigh as he waved his hand to unlock the door and allow it to open a little, alerting the person on the other side that he was available. He didn't mind helping his students as most of them had innocenet questions and just wanted his help in one way or another. But then there were others...hopefully whoever walks through his doors isn't the philosophical kind of student who wants to know if there are beings apart from us in the world.

It was only the beginning of the school year but news spread quickly around the school. Another dance was going to happen, this time a Halloween masquerade themed one. It might have already gotten around, but the teachers were going to catch on to it soon and the dance might get ruined and or supervised which nobody wanted. Part of that might be her fault. Was she going to the ball? Yes. Was she going to be responsible there unlike the last ball? Hopefully. A lot of students had been wary since the last dance ended so.. poorly, but Annie managed to avoid most of that disaster. Many of her friends liked going to the dances so she figured she would go as well but be very cautious of any and everything.
The brunette tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her nerves on end as she knocked on the door. She shuffled her feet slightly as the door creaked open a bit and she came face to face with a Professor. Sure she was a Prefect and Professors knew of her but that didn't make her any more nervous when she had to talk to them. Not to mention that this small favor she was asking of him could get her in trouble and ruin the plans of the ball. After clearing her head and attempting to calm her nerves she stepped into the office. Her eyes met the Professors and she took a small breath before speaking. "Professor Vernatis..?" She tested out his name to get his attention before she slowly took her hands from behind her back which held two masks. She searched for his reaction but couldn't read him that well. "Before you say anything, yes I am going to the ball and I will advise anyone against it who hasn't already made up their mind, I don't think it'll be dangerous like last time or at least I'm hoping not.." Annie started going off in a different direction before snapping her attention back to what she originally came to his office for. "Can you help me with an illusion of some sorts? I found two masks, but want to combine them. So the golden flowers and vine design from this mask get taken and put on the deer mask and have a sort of shimmer effect.."
The girl walked over to a desk and set them down, explaining to him what she wanted to do. This skill was out of her league but perhaps he could help her? If not or he refuses to because of potential danger at the ball then this will have been a very awkward encounter. She paled at the thought before patiently waiting for his response or instructions, hoping neither of which were going to be bad.

The child in question was one of Caradoc's prefects. The girl wasn't bad in his class and kept up her grades. But he could see that even with her being a prefect and being one of the older students, she was still determined to follow the crowd and tag along to this party. The Charms professor stared at the girl as she rambled on about how the dance wasn't going to be dangerous this time around and how she would tell others to not join the dance if they weren't already going. He raised an unamused eyebrow as she came off a bit presumptious that he would even say anything to her about going to the dance in the first place. Sure, he could ban her from going and being with her friends, but that wouldn't lead to anything but rebellion and then having to have his words undermined by her Head of House. When the dance was announced, Artemis already had it in his head that he would have to possibly intervene and save some rugrat or a handful of them. There was no doubt about it. It would do better for his sanity if he thought more positive about the dance and had more faith in the children that they would conduct themselves more maturely than they had in the past.
But hope led to mistakes and idiot descisions.
The child's request to put her two masks together wasn't a difficult one, but she was correct that it was a bit out of her league as a third year student. "The effects that you wish to have placed on this mask and the combination of the two masks is quite an interesting concept. I know that you remember the rules of Charms, correct? Honestly, I believe that this particular request is a mixture of Transfiguration as well as Charms. Nevertheless, it is a doable project. Give me a moment to re-think on your visual for the mask."

OOC: I'm actually waiting on your 2 pictures to be blended into 1 and hope that it turns out fine. I asked someone to help me out with the photoshopping. Unless you have a finished product picture yourself where you can show the outcome of the spell work for the mask visual you presented.
Also, I apologize for the short reply.

The Professor had just watched her ramble on and hadn't spoken a word to her as she explained everything. He hadn't said no but the eerie silence was unsettling. She shouldn't have brought up the topic of the dance, it probably made him skeptical of her. Or maybe she was just overreacting and talking in her head like always? In that instance, the silence was broken by Professor Vernatis explaining to her that the idea she had planned would require a bit of Transfiguration as well as Charms to complete. Annie bit her lip and nodded her head slowly. "I- I do remember the concepts of Charms and I'll do whatever it takes, even if it includes a bit of Transfiguration."
Curse her stutter, but what she had stated was true. Even if she wasn't the one making the mask effects per say, she still wanted to help out if possible. Even just watching charms or transfiguration was cool to her. The brunette silently cursed her brain for having a brilliant but difficult idea, much less an idea for a ball that she needed assistance from a Professor to complete it. She rubbed her temples and let out a small sigh while remaining quiet so he could think. Glancing at the masks laid out in front of her, the picture that she saw kept replaying in her head.
The White deer mask as the base, the golden rose and vine pattern from the other white mask copied and transferred onto the deer mask. Not too hard yet, right? Next an illusion of the design shimmering or "dancing" across the mask, much like the pictures moving throughout portraits in the hallways. It was simple in her mind, but putting it together in actual time was a lot harder of a task, but she would preserve and make her imagination come to life, with the Professor's help of course, if he was willing to do so.

Artemis allowed the imagery of how his student wished to have the two masks on his desk combined. It truly was a remarkable concept and he hoped that she had fun dressing up with this funky little deer mask. Perhaps she would be going to the ball as a stag? Quite interesting indeed. Focusing on the smaller mask, Artemis raised his wand and focused on what he had to do. For him, it was quite simple to do, but he still needed to concentrate or risk the masks being a mangled mess of designs. If he did mess up, it would be fixable...maybe. But the Charms professor would rather do everything perfectly in the first try. First, he tapped his wand against the smaller mask and recited an incantation, making the mask glow before repeating the process with the deer mask. The spell would focus the kinetic energy of the two items, keep them together and ensuring that they knew that they were meant for each other. Next came the first charm that would remove and levitate the design of the smaller mask onto the deer one. Slowly, each layer of the sparkly gold moved off of the smaller mask and onto the deer mask. Layer by layer each glittery gold design lifted off of small mask until that mask was as bare as it was when it came out of whatever factory it was made in. The design layered itself beautifully upon the deer mask until the final one was placed on the white surface.
The glow coming off of the two masks slowly dulled until they were back to their original shades. The small mask looked plain, almost as if it belonged to the Phantom of the Opera. Elegant, yet still bland enough to not stand out if one wanted to blend in. It could be a great Halloween gift or mask for someone who wished to stay anonymous without the glam and glitter of the deer mask.
And speaking of that mask. Artemis moved his wand over the second mask and cast another spell, focusing on making the mask shimmer possibly glow a bit in the dark if presented in the right light. Picking up the deer mask, Artemis turned it this way and that to see if his thought process on how the mask should look and work actually worked and when he saw that it did, he turned it to the student before him and moved it gently back and forth before gently placing it on the table to see if the shimmer effects would work on their own and if Annie were content with the mask itself.
"I hope that this is what you wanted, Miss Morgan? Please let me know if there is something else you wish to have done to the mask or something you wish to have changed? The ball itself is only a few days away so we should settle this before the day comes. If there is nothing else, you may leave in your own time."
He hoped that the lass was happy with the mask. He would change anything if needed, but in a sense, even if he didn't agree with the ball or with students even planning one, he did want them to have fun. Living in fear was a droll way of living and the kids needed to be able to laugh while they were in school.
